Brandeis did a nice production of this in, oh what was it, 2007? Not as polished of course but fun to watch. I think it was an older stage adaptation.

Farkin hell. Does everything need to be made into a musical? The high pitched female lead’s voice has pierced my poor eardrums. The addition of Meow Meow as narrator seems superfluous and I’m certain the audience would have a better time watching Meow Meow in a one-woman concert, than watching this very small-scale, amateur looking production. The film is brilliant because it is not ‘self knowing’. It’s not trying to be kitsch or camp. This production is trying to be everything, touching but ironic, sincere but subversive. Three great athletic male dancers makes the main cast look like very uncharismatic, plain vanilla boring English performers who lack the spirit needed for this very French story. The background singer whos voice is better than the main cast isn’t allowed to be cast as the lead, because she’s of a different race - that makes me laugh, as the main leads voice pales in comparison. The whole thing looks very anaemic. I’d rather support fringe productions who have something new to say.
