I have a theory that treatment always does "something " because we are social creatures. The act of caring whether it is administered by one self or another person sets off hormones that say you are part of a group and are loved. It is why placebos work for some, why acupressure works for some, why chiropracty works for some. We need care, preferably by someone else, but we can care for ourselves too.

    • @tylerphuoc2653

I am using only the neck pillow one, not the back one. I am prone to get tension in the neck while working at my desk or sometimes doing other things. When the tension gets to uncomfortable and maybe even is giving me a headache I use the pillow for about 30 minutes - and the tension and tension headache is completely gone. It is so relaxing that most of the time I even nod of to sleep.
The first 2-3 minutes it’s uncomfortably pokey and I try to move it in a position where the poking is spread out evenly. After about 5 minutes the poking feeling is gone and replaced by a warm feeling.
I use it maybe once a week and am aware that it only treats symptoms and not the cause of the tension. Nevertheless it’s like a magic weapon.
I wouldn’t know why one would use it everyday. 💁

It's great for increasing endorphins and increasing blood flow just one of the reasons you become relaxed and a bit tired. And as far as pain, it tricks the brain into saying hey there's a fire over here let's check it out and it forgets about the other places that cause consistent pain. For those with lower back pain using the pillow is a must in tricking the brain and causing a physical change in neurological pathways.

Hey, saw your video, I have had one of these since September last year as I have issues with back pain. This thing worked wonders on my back at the beginning and let me move around almost normally again. I lie on it for 30 minutes usually and within 5 minutes I fall asleep but I always feel better after I use it. My doctor told me that after using it for a couple of months you should give it a break for a month but Ive been doing two weeks on and 1 week off (unless my back is bad and then I just use it as needed) and it helps me.
One of the things the doc also recommended to me was keeping my feet flat on the floor and knees bent as more of your back is in contact with the mat.
Anyways, it was interesting to see someone else's experience and take. Good luck with it for the future if you decide to stick with it.

As someone else pointed out. This is for chronic pain.
It’s creating a new source of pain, which overrides your actual pain.
Your nervous system can only handle so much.
Honestly, I always just thought I was crazy doing similar things for years.
Such as burning, walking for extended periods of time to make my legs hurt more than my compression fractures and what not.
Though I think most people don’t understand. It’s not to fix pain, it’s only to give yourself a break.
Holder, for how chronic pain works ~ where your brain essentially gets imprinted with “This spot hurts.” Always on. Even if that area heals.
Using these might actually improve your dopamine receptors.
Though I have no idea - I’m basically talking out of my ass. Though I am an experienced ass.
    ( not gay)

I have chronic pain, the cause is unknown right now but it is suspected it may be due to Ehlers Danlos syndrome. I just decided to order one of these mats as I know for a fact they work! A thing I often do during fall and winter is heat up my cherry pit pillow to where it burns my skin slightly, and then lay on it until it cools down to a point where it stops stinging. It's very relieving because it does very much put my focus on the stinging instead of the pain I feel everywhere else on my body. Best part about it is that the slight burn would keep stinging for a good 30 minutes after I got off the pillow, further extending the effect. This mat is a safer and less hot alternative though!

Assuming the "benefit" you get isn't just from laying down for 10 minutes every day, it could also be you body releasing endorphins to try to mask the pain. If you have back pain, that may make you feel it a bit less, but the mat isn't actually fixing anything, just masking pain temporarily.

I have one and it has been glorious for alleviating my back pain. My understanding is that it stimulates blood-flow through the nerve clusters, so that your brain can communicate more effectively with your muscles, allowing it to alleviate the pain. But seriously, five minutes on one of those and my back pain was gone. I mean, it came back, but it really can offer immediate relief. Now, when I'm in a lot of pain, I will lay on it for like 45 minutes. Sometimes for a whole hour.
But, yeah... sitting up afterwards is definitely the worst part.

Late to the party but this is very similar to those cervical traction pillows you can buy. I had very bad forward head tilt and little range of motion in my neck and shoulders. Lying for 10/15 minutes on that helped to (seemingly) align me better. One negative I've found is the neck muscles might relax too much that they don't handle your bad posture as well, making headaches worse. But I dropped from daily headaches to a couple per week, and much more mobility shoulders up

I hate that you are using your beautiful new shirt (we all know it's new! we all know Chyna helped you pick it out! I hate (hate is too strong, I wish you wouldn't) listen to a podcast while trying the spikes. The point of the spikes is embracing the pain and sitting with it. Distracting yourself from the spikes makes it pointless IMHO.

This is what my dad called "the principle of pain transference." "Headache? Beat your knee with a hammer. No more headache!"
Theres a strangely large amount of scientific evidence for this. We actually have a lot of control when it comes to shuffling around our pain perception. Actually, I think this is part of why exercise helps, too. (Aside from the other obvious benefits). We give ourselves a chance to suffer for a few minutes and then when we arent suffering, its suddenly like "wow! I feel good now that I am not suffering!"
So I dont think its bs. I think there's a lot of reasons why stuff like this actually works and we keep coming up with new ways to enact this concept and its mind trickery for sure, but not necessarily the placebo effect. Just another way to use our brains weird leaps in logic as tools instead of hurdles or burdens

Meaning, I think I'm relaxed.. then i'll catch my neck releasing and my head sinking back further, realizing i was holding onto extra tension. the big hack here is to ensure than you lay on it in a way that your skin isn't pulling or stretching when in the final position. it helps me sleep better. it's a good before-bed sleep hack. it eventually feels as though i'm on a warm water bed. very pleasant to me
