I hear this. I am trying to lose weight but refuse to weigh myself because the numbers psych me out. I’m just going off of how my clothes fit, how I look in the mirror and how I feel. I’m focusing on getting STRONGER and not thinner. Somehow that mind shift helps keep me from spiraling.
It’s NOT working for me. I weighed myself at the beginning of a new workout routine. And, I noticed some of my bottoms weren’t fitting anymore. For 1 months, I had been religiously doing 2 separate routines. 1 in morning that worked butt/hips/thighs. Another at night b4 bed to work the abs. Was doing 2/3 sets of each(followed to a T). Stopped eating after 7 pm. Cut out the sweets, too. Again, did this for 1 month. Well, after that month, decided to weigh myself. I gained 2 lbs and tried to put on a pair of pants that fit 1 month b4. They DO NOT fit anymore. So, another pair of pants gone. I’ve only got 3 pairs of denim pants. The other 2 are draw string(they fit better). Now, I’m doing a new exercise routine. I’m only on day 3
@@Camille-wk9zs What is your goal? Around what age are you? Are you working out every morning and every night? What is your goal? Do you know how many calories you're consuming every day? Do you know what your BMR is?
Years ago, at a sleepover, four of us girls pulled out the measuring tape and the scale. I was at my peak fitness, sub 20% fat, having just done a professional photoshoot. The other girls were between 105-115. I was 131. Gaining muscle mass might be the key to your finally looking like you lost that stubborn five pounds
I don’t get what you’re saying? We’re you the “leanest looking” girl at the sleepover if so I get what you mean. I look lean and get told all time I’m so small but I’m heaviest I’ve been in long time with great muscle gains😊
I just found this video ...as I was searching for strength workouts to gain muscle for women over 40. Can't describe how relieved I feel to hear such things. Have u any videos with such workouts?
@@redefiningstrengthOC Your comment just made me feel so good because I also lost only about 2 kilograms within month and I thought I’m doing bad 😭 Even though I’m just trying to make this part of my routine and not just to get quick results, it’s still hard because deeply you want to lose it all quickly haha I really need to take a break from wages, thanks for the video!
I watched the video it says sign up below but there is no link . What would take place once I sign up ? I am very interested but also realistically would need to know the cost of the program moving forward .
Stubborn areas looking worse before they look better is sooo true and thanks for pointing this out! I know the "woosh effect" is controversial and hasn't been scientifically proven but I've noticed that my waist, thighs and back of arms will look bigger and puffy for a while, sometimes up to two weeks then over a day or two will suddenly deflate and look leaner and tight and my clothes will fit looser. Those plateaus can be disheartening if you don't know what's going on but as long as you make sure you're sticking to a reasonable calorie deficit and maintaining your workouts, eventually you can see the plateaus as a sign of incoming results. Paying attention to your electrolyte balance and any nutrient deficiencies helps as well.
YESSS! The whoosh effect is super interesting and I've implemented the higher carb after lower carb strategically with clients to amazing ends! And so often when we think results aren't building they are! It takes time for everything to "catch up" at times and our body to embrace the changes over fighting them!
When I got back into weights and weightlifting after a knee and back injury, I did a lot of stability and free weight stuff that often worked core muscles. A few months in, I felt better in my core, but I noticed my entire midsection was puffier and BIGGER. I poked myself all over and realized I still had a lot of fat, but I had a great mass of muscle that was never there before. It didn't mean what I was doing wasn't "working", it meant that I was that combo of fitter and fat at the ame time. Told myself not to panic, and sure enough a couple months later, I had more shape, my core was even harder, and there was less squish to poke to get it. I think with me specifically, I put on muscle super easily, and my medications and diet had also changed around the same time. So I was gastro issues and bloating were also adding to the changes, and that varies from week to week. Something that helped me years ago is even if I had the goal "fat to lean", there's a whole lot of in between in there for a long period of time. First step is always fat and stronger, or fat and fitter. Which is your first goal. Honestly to improve health, it should be anyone's goal. "Me, but a bit better at something this week than I was last week." That's success for any one at any size, age, or people with restrictions.
@@uniquegeek2708 yesss, I’m so glad you said this! I used to be so confused by my stomach looking bigger when I could feel the abs underneath but I realized that when my stomach was just fat, it was able to sink inwards giving a flatter look but with a layer of muscle underneath, there’s nowhere for the top layer of fat to go but out lol. As I lean out you begin to see not just the flat undefined look from before, but more of that textured, “contracted” core which is nice to see but takes some getting used to! Still a ways to go but staying consistent and enjoying the process and congrats on your progress as well!
@@uniquegeek2708I’ve “poked myself all over” too. I still can’t feel any type of muscle definition under this layer of “fat”. It’s ALL squishy and seems to be better “fatter” and bigger every week. When I look in the mirror, there’s no “definition” anywhere. Used to have the perfect hourglass figure. Not anymore. I’ve become an apple now. With the mirror, all I see when I look at myself is boobs, butt and gut…☹️😩
No one else (that I’ve heard) is saying/telling me what you are saying - and what you’re explaining is exactly what I need to understand. Thank you so much for sharing your expert knowledge and making it so clear for me. 🤗
It definitely makes all the sense in the world, but the weight on the scale has been beaten in us our whole life, so I suspect it's going to take a minute to retrain my mind. ❤❤❤ Thanks for all you do to help .
It definitely takes time to retrain ourselves and shift our focus. But I think the more knowledge we gain and awareness even of our own patterns and thoughts, the more we an shift them to work for us instead of against us :-) But always a process!
I started working out 19 months ago l was a very heavy drinker and ate whatever l could. Since giving up drinking altogether and eating healthier and working out which by the way has saved my life, I've never felt so alive! I did workout earlier that scales are not my friend and at 57 you can start at any age and when your children tell you, you look great skin, hair and body you know it's working and dropping a few sizes in clothing helps too.
So true that the scale doesn’t show everything. I thought I wasn’t making progress because the scale was staying the same, but then I realized my clothes were fitting different and later people asked if I was losing weight.
My clothes still are NOT fitting different. I’ve added weights AND resistance to routine. Added in more protein. I’m 50 and I feel and look 6 months pregnant(and, NO, I’m NOT pregnant)…
“OVERDRAMATIZATION”😂 Bikini Competitor here. Just hit the big 4-8 during this current prep and decided to be kinder to the ol’ gal, as I kicked it off. No cardio just step counting, gram per pound of body weight in protein, low glycemic carbs with the exception of first morning meal and post-workout, prioritizing sleep, and GIRL, the recomp is legit! Kind of a mind F when the scale has been just sitting at a stand still but not when I look in the mirror. Leaning out while I keep getting stronger and I am so happy to not be killing myself with tons of HIIT cardio. Love this video-and looks like we are matchy matchy with our whoops and watches (:
I've been doing hiit cardio because I have extra fat around my midsection and chest. I feel like I'm thinner and lost a lot of my bulk, but I wasn't happy with the fatty spots.
How do you hit your step count without doing cardio? Just wondering. I only work 3x a week and then I'm home during the other days. I work out 5x a week but if I don't do walks or treadmill I won't get my steps in.
Yes!! It is so important to know what a person is losing. I’m a Weight Watchers member and that’s never talked about in this light. I may have to enlighten people but I hate to burst their bubbles! I do wish everyone knew this though! Thank you for all you do. Good stuff!👍🏻💪🏻
YES! So key we realize the difference between losing fat and just losing weight! But it is definitely a challenging thing at times to recognize as we have gotten very tied up often in a number on the scale.
Your comment has highlighted a really important point - Weight Watchers' business model relies on you getting extreme results from unsustainable practices, falling off the wagon and starting over again. Slow and steady really does win the race with body comp - the results are so worth it though. Keep going, you should be proud!
My mom went on WW about 5-6 years ago and dropped from a size 8-10 to a size 0-2. She cut out most food, almost all fat, and relies on "fat free" foods full of garbage. She now has full blown osteoporosis, her hair is thinning, and she can't lift more than 15 pounds for more than a minute. She's withered away to nothing and it's PAINFUL to watch. I'm almost 40 and intent on continuing CrossFit until my 90s, Lord willing. I'd rather be a few pounds overweight and strong than a size 0 and slowly disappearing.
I am so happy to see you say this! I'm a WW member too and back when I was able to go to workshops, I would try to say these things and the older women would get upset with me. Now, I use WW as more of a guide, rather than the Bible to healthy eating... only because I know that being mindful and tracking food is what keeps me from falling back into old habits.
I'm in my 70s and doing intermittent fasting and am focusing on my healthy choices and not the scales. Sometimes I go for weeks without weighing myself. I'm averaging about a pound a week and feel really good. My clothes are looser and I've had to readjust my car seat twice! I do gentle exercises and stretching and usually only eat for a few hours in the middle of the day. I am comfortable with this process and don't feel deprived.
I’ve always thought that I will have my perfect body when I hit 135 lbs at 5’8, I just need to “tone up” a little. I’ve fluctuated between 118 and 165, never achieving the look I wanted. Now that I have a better relationship with food, lift 4x per week and see some visible muscle definition, I’m realizing that my desired aesthetic is probably closer to 150-155 lbs at my height.
The scale can be a great tool to help us maintain I've found. Because when we've achieved an aesthetic or feel we like, we can then weigh and see what number we're at. Then that can be used to help us maintain our results as a guide. But the number comes second to tell us what our weight is when we look and feel the way we want. Love that you're evolving what fits what you want!
I’m 5’0 and 156. I look at myself and think “I’m a fat cow”. Can’t fit into 95% of my clothes, either. I’ve gained 12 lbs in 7 months. In the last month, I’ve cut down extensively on late night snacking. I’ve increased my exercise routine. Never had 1 before. I’m still not seeing any change in anything. The only change I’ve noticed: increased weight and clothes still not fitting.
@@Camille-wk9zskeep at it! I'm on a weight loss journey as well and the first month I lost 0 pounds. This month I lost 7! Consistency is key. It's a lifestyle change.
@Camille-wk9zs your body will also naturally gravitate toward what it "wants" to be. A year and a half ago, I was 135 lbs. A pregnancy, higher protein diet, and weight lifting has elevated me to 180. It was super rough at first to gain so much weight, but I'm also the healthiest I've been. I have gone up in size, but it's from things like chest and back growth, not fat growth. You might just not be seeing the muscle growth if you still have some fat. I've even noticed that my stomach (still a bit saggy/fat) seems larger, but it's because the muscle growth underneath is pushing the fat out, if that makes sense. All that to say, don't despair because you may be growing in a good way, but unable to really see the changes because we are our own worst critics
@@ashlietilley7732 for me, all I see after 7 weeks now is MORE fat. There’s absolutely NO definition in my legs/thighs/stomach. I’ve gained another 3-4 lbs. if you could see a photo of myself that I took Dec 7, 2023 and today, there has been NO change. That’s 3 months worth of doing exercises at least 5 days a week, morning AND evening
I have followed your advice, and it’s working! I am losing inches and my muscles are getting defined. I went from a size 12, to a size 8! My tops are medium, but they’re feeling loose! And, yes, I am slowly losing weight! Thank you!!
Yes as a trainer I always said, a pound of muscle takes up less space, but a pound of fat takes too much space. It helps women who worry about becoming bulky or looking manly. How hard you look is determined by how much fat you keep. You can be fit and soft looking if you want that.
Omg this is what i need. I start weightlifting for 2 months and gained 1kg. I feel better but my weight increase. I feel really down everytime i check on my weight. Thank you
I love this explanation, healthy weight gain is hard but a good thing. I love the focus on measurements vs scale weight. I am 5’6” and 180, according to BMI I am overweight. I have always been athletic and performed way over people my age. Great job on explaining weight vs healthy weight and not focusing on the scale
Saving this to revisit many times! Thank you for sharing so much encouraging, no-bs wisdom. Currently in a cut and started getting attached to the scale, and this gave me new perspective.
I needed to hear this!!!! I keep losing inches and my weight has stayed the samish for 2 months!!! I can fit cloths I couldn't before!!! I also keep getting stronger!! I'm sooo thankful for this reassuring video!🙏🏽 🎉🎉
I became too sedentary because of a sprained ankle and a torn knee, which then cause weight gain. I started Macros with a focus on Protein and working out, being careful of my injuries. I lost almost 4.5 pounds in a week, gained a bit, came down a bit, but when I measured my waist after 3 weeks it was down one inch and a quarter, and my clothes are fitting better. Cori, you are right, the scale is one thing, but the measurements are another, and I find the process very encouraging. And btw, I am not meal deprived, and sometimes I'm like, "I have to eat again?...uh...ok..." Love your channel Cori!
I love that you're controlling what you can control and focusing on that nutrition! It will speed your recovery and help you even see better results as you rebuild from those injuries! Wishing you a speedy recovery and thank you so much!
This confirms that I’m definitely on track 🙌🏻 I definitely don’t watch the scale & I can absolutely see definition on my body especially legs abs, and shoulders.
This is THE best explanation ever. I have lost 100 pounds and I’m currently working on muscle building and I’m feeling stronger I stopped looking at the scale. This solidified my practice and made me feel less “crazy”. Thank you !
Thank so much ❤ I wish this video was around when I was 19 years old back in the early 2000s when I first started getting into fitness and weight loss, I lost a lot of weight at that time (doing everything the wrong Way),, But I also lost muscle and bone and eventually my period ,, I wish so badly that this message was around back then but there wasn't RUclips at the time either, I wish I never found that stupid book at my library that told me to eat 500 calories a day , I wish I never read those stupid fitness magazines that told me to kill myself with cardio , they never said anything about how important protein is!! All they said was don't eat fat!! I'm still trying to heal my body from years of damage from that stupid horrible fitness information I feel like I'm not the only one , I love this message so much more and the awesome thing is we can build muscle and still have a healthy menstrual cycle, as long as we're eating enough protein and calories of course Something that stupid book and magazines never said
I feel like many of us have fallen into patterns we wish we hadn't based on the information we had available to us, or pushed on us, at the time. But I love that you're seeking to learn and move forward and heal your body to move and feel your best now. Keep it up!! And glad the video helped!
@@redefiningstrengthOC thank you 🙏🏻 I appreciate your awesome information 💕 even though I've been into health and fitness for over 20 years I feel like I'm learning for the first time while I'm erasing all the old unhealthy fitness messages of the past 💪🏻
Fixing perspective of fat versus muscle has helped me today!! I knew this but definitely needed to be reminded and hear it!! I f’n HATE what the scale does so my mindset!! Throwing it into the back of the closet until I feel the best in my body. Then I’ll see what my best healthy weight with muscle is. F the # on that thing
Love that way of using the scale. Finding what you feel most fabulous at then just using that number to help you stay there but not letting a number dictate the progress toward your goal!
Love this. No diet advice as far as foods go, just a simple, easy to understand language that says, "lose weight gradually while at the same time building muscle, and you will get to where you want to be.". Don't eliminate anything from your diet. Track calories so you're in a slight caloric deficit. Eat healthy most of the time while eating crap only in situations where you need a break. Weight train, even if it's hardly anything. Once you get into shape, then you can fine tune to become leaner if you want. Or you can go deep and start to build a body that is your best body. Doing it this way you change your relationship with food and you'll be better off in the long run. You are who I should have been listening to this whole time.
Well yeah that is a simple concept but also the same reason overweight people never lose the weight they want. It takes too long and they go back to their old habits.
Love this. I've been tracking weight on scale and getting tired of it - ready to throw the scale out the window and focus on what is more important. For me, I have health issues and struggle to exercise. I certainly want fat loss and muscle maintenance or gain. I am shifting my focus to how I feel (manage/reduce symptoms), what I am able to do (increased strength/better functionality) and how my clothes fit.
Thank you for that video! Checking those signs really boosts motivation. I started to experience that exact process on myself and while scales are frustrating me, it feels amazing. When I was 19, I bought a T-shirt that I really liked and started to use it to keep track of how fast and thick my hair grew (trust me, for a person who suffered from alopecia that was causing me too much distress not to track it). And at the same time, unintentionally, I tracked my body shape as well. Through the years my weight fluctuated, though I always was overweight. For my teen years, I usually was about 82-85 kg (180-187 lbs) with 170 cm (5.6") but later due to some health issues I gained weight and became 103 kg (227 lbs). I managed to lose my weight to 82 kg again and it has been stuck for some months now. A few months ago I started training and while I weigh the same as when I was 23, that exact T-shirt does not stretch on me like the skin on a drum, while I'm turning 32 next month. I'm literally looking and feeling better than when I was ten years younger! And now, instead of before, I'm stronger and for the first time in my life can do push-ups (wasn't able my whole life).
I recently had a friend tell me she was doing a 500 calorie/day diet right after she complained of not going to the bathroom in a week and feeling cramps all over her body. I usually don’t comment on crazy shit people tell me they’re doing, but I couldn’t help myself. She said she was eating 500 calories but the “other 700” were being provided by her body 😵. I was speechless.
As much as we hear calorie deficit for weight loss, going too low can hold us back for sure. Always hard though when we see all these fad diets promoting overnight results! We all get tempted!
I am working out 5 days a week since two months and I only lost 1 kilo on the scale. I see this as a huge win since I am sure I am building a lot of muscles on the way.
Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video! You just saved me from a seven day water fast. I’ve been working with a trainer and doing everything right for the past three weeks, but the scale hasn’t budged. I am, however, seeing definition in my arms and stomach, and my clothes are looser. I was about to embark on a seven day water fast today, so that I could get rid of six stinking pounds. I’ll just continue to do what I’ve been doing. Thank you again.
Honestly the faster we lose on the scale, while it can be satisfying, the less it is really fat being lost. Water weight. Glycogen depletion, yes...but then the second you eat or drink, those stores fill!
I saw this video before, but the eyes are useless when the mind is blind. My scale didn’t budge for months, incredibly frustrating, and my clothes fit better, I looked better, but it wasn’t enough for me and ended up sabotaging my diet & exercise. Not this time, I would be happy to see the changes and the scale being the same, I was truly recomping, which can’t last forever, eventually the scale will go down. I’m 5’2” female, 165 lbs… I don’t plan on being 165 of pure muscle :) thanks for this video, again 😂
Just did this recently got on and then off the wagon because the scale showed no weight loss. I should know better but will try again, thanks for the explanation Cori. The ending was perfect 🐕😍
Kiwi and Sushi are the stars! And I think we all need this reminder at times because we all want progress faster! When we're putting in the effort you want to see the outcome you want!
I've weighed the same (with in 5 pounds) for 14 months. But I've been super focused on lifting heavy 5 days a week using progressive overload. And I walk 5 hours a week. Eat at about maintenance calories, now I'm slowly increasing into a lean bulk range. But I've gone from a loose medium shirt and size 6 jeans to an extra small t-shirt and loose size 2 jeans. Lifting and protein with eating adequate calories is so key.
YES! We can see the scale not change and that body recomp happening! Great job! Not to mention...."maintaining" doesn't mean standing still. Often results are still building!
The algorithm is 8 months late, but this is what I needed today. After 18 months of no exercise and excessive eating, I joined a functional fitness gym 2 months ago to try and get in shape while shedding fat. Every day I tell myself it's a marathon, not a sprint, but it's easy to get down when the kilo's aren't dropping. Thank you for reassurance, and for all the additional info I wasn't aware of! I'm going to save this to watch every time I need a reminder that the scale isn't the judge and jury of my progress 😊
You always drop amazing info here, but am I crazy or did your editing or production value just jump up a lot? Slick. Love the info and the delivery. Great video.
I won’t go into detail but I started my “wellness” journey 5 yrs ago. It will be 5 yrs on 29 March. The day I medically released from the military. I started at 253 lbs w/RA, PTSD, menopausal, left a toxic relationship. Today I’m around 140lbs. My journey was for my mental health. I had to learn a new way of getting back into shape and maintaining. With spinning, strength training, and just being out for a walk I got here. I truly missed most of my transformation because it wasn’t about weight loss although I knew it would be a sideshow. I didn’t change my diet. I drank way too much. The only time I got on the scale was when I would wake up and feel lighter or my clothes were fitting differently if at all. I actually reached my “goal weight” December 2022. I felt good physically and but I knew I couldn’t stop. My mental health was better but I still had a ways to go. End June 2023 I reached my current goal….I was so surprised….I was 52 and a lot of my friends who were always in shape were now coming to me asking how I got rid of my belly….I didn’t know!!! That’s when I started paying attention and taking more pics…..today I am maintaining that body weight….easily. My transition was so natural. My diet is really good now and I’m still seeing really nice gains and acceptable loses. I keep my scale more to make sure I’m not losing anymore body weight but losing body fat and growing muscle. It’s still crazy to me how I can have a harder time putting on my leggings….I realized it’s because my body is “hard”….thats a gain for me! Good luck to all….it truly has been a “healing” journey for me….✌🏽❤️🇨🇦
You hit the nail on the head, I am so obsessed with the scale. I did lose a couple of pounds but my doctor did tell me I don’t eat enough protein smh . Listen to you I have a clearer understanding thanks.
a few years ago this video would make me angry and frustrated because i was starving myself and binging over and over again, now i understand this and im glad i’ve finally reached this level of understanding at 20 years old, it would have saved my teenage years but late is better than never, thank you.
Thank you! Going into my second week wondering when the stubborn area will loose inches. My scale shows fat loss % It’s going down due to 1st week water loss but stubborn areas measuring the same. Some reason I don’t want photos, I have enough of what I don’t want to see. I’m watching my arms and legs… When my head is bigger than my body and my arms look like yours then I will be at my goal. I do want to be at 25% body fat at maintenance. Now I’m 42% fat
Taking those measurements is key and being patient past the point we want to quit. Although I would really recommend taking progress pictures as they do show recomp. Keep up your consistency!
So rather than losing weight, I want to take up less space haha. Honestly the scale thing is so true especially in the beginning for me, so I strive to have less jiggle when I walk and clothes fitting better. The scale is a liar
I started IF last Monday and I've been eating from 12-8... BUT, this time I decided to eat at a reasonable deficit (1500-1700 calories) and I've committed to 20-30 minutes of cardio per day... Today I did 30 mins on my stepper and 15 minutes on my bike because I was watching a movie... Funny thing is I know I've stayed on track but got frustrated this week becauase I weighed more than last Friday... I was excited because I saw four pounds drop last week. Today I'm up one pound BUT I told myself to keep going because I can tell my face is slimmer and I know I've done nothing wrong. So, thank you for this video because I needed the reassurance today ❤
You have to remember progress isn't linear and you still have lost 3 lbs. We will see fluctuations based on soreness, sleep changes and even slight changes in how you broke up your meals (like if the last meal was bigger than usual). But you're on the right track!
@@redefiningstrengthOC Thank you so much! I'm definitely going to remember that... I was on a journey before and never weighed myself... I just walked around and hiked at Stone Mountain park... Ate well and walked the stairs at work on my breaks... Never worried about the weight and next thing, I was super fit! These are pandemic pounds I've been lazy about, but they will be gone in 6 months, I'm on a mission! Love your channel!
True. During all Christmas and New year's time(and even still) my weight was holding around 150 pounds. First I was glad as hell, but then understood that I was just losing my muscle mass for two months, which was replaced by good old fat...
Always ebbs and flows with times of year but knowing our balance and even that body recomp doesn't mean changes on the scale can help us stay overall consistent!
This video makes sooo much sense. I have been feeling like I am not making any progress because the scale is not budging but my old jeans have started to fit a lot better and I can see my arms getting leaner and see some hard muscle too there. I am also getting more hungry because of all the strength training. I have stopped dieting and I eat more now because if I don’t I don’t think I will be able to continue the strength training. It all Makes so much sense now. No more weight scale. Thanks a lot for this video.
YES! You're seeing that recomp and the more you build muscle, the more calories you need to maintain that muscle! Keep focusing on those other changes!
Thank you! You helped me!!! I was so frustrated with looking at the scale and couldn’t understand why I only drop 2 or 3 pounds when I’ve been weight lifting daily and eating more healthy meals. However, my clothes have been fitting me much better. I took some photos recently at an event and was like wow! I could see my muscle tone looked much tighter. So the answer is that muscle takes up less space even though it may weigh more than fat.
This is so true. I went down 3 sizes and remained the same exact weight. And it was obvious from looking at me I was much smaller and in much better shape. Great video!❤
I'm gonna listen to this everyday to assure myself that everything is gonna be alright. I've only been strength training consistently 5x a week for almost 4 months now. I thought my weight will go down, instead it went up but other than that, I feel stronger than the first time I started. I am even lifting heavier weights now.
Looking at using these measurements and pictures as well as watching your progression in your workouts is a great way to help you stay on track. And making sure your fueling is truly in line with your goals and training is key!
I really appreciate this video. I've been a in strict diet since July 2023, its now 8 months later and while the scale hasn't move much (about 8kg) my clothes are fitting better and I've move 3 notches smaller on my belt. I always stressed about the scale, like I check every morning but I'll focus on diet and what im doing now. Its true, people tell that I've lost a lot of weight but i feel i have not lost much.
I learned this from Covert Bailey back in the 1990s (he was talking about this since the 1980s), and it was revolutionary. The TRUE measure of fitness is body fat percentage and NOT weight. You can have a “normal” BMI and be “skinny fat”, and you can have an “overweight” BMI and be “lean and defined”. You can be losing inches but not lose weight because you’re gaining muscle and losing fat. Your tip on using clothing fit to judge progress is great.
YES! This is something we've been aware of for awhile but I think often gets lost because the scale is such an easy mainstream metric! And glad it helped!
Great video! I have been wondering all of this in my fitness journey and you have answered these lingering questions. I have a Withings scale and it says I'm staying at the same percentage of fat but my clothes and visible muscle gains tell a different story. I'm no longer going to use my scale as the arbiter of my attitude towards my goals and progress. PS I love the production of this video - easy to follow and you seem so relaxed and natural. Keep em coming!
I just found your channel. New sub. I want to thank you for this. I thought I was plateaued in the 240s because my weight stopped going down. I was putting on my belt today, and realized I was two notches smaller. I've been doing a bunch of weights so gaining weight makes sense. Anyway I felt discouraged, and now I'm excited. So, thank you.
Good to know I’m doing it right. The scale still says I’m heavy but my clothes are just a bit looser. Even still, the exercise and healthier eating habits make me feel so much better so it’s worth it for that alone.
I had a Nurse Practitioner argue with me when I pointed out that Muscle does not weigh more than fat, even when I used props to show her that muscle just takes up less space. LOL 1lb of bricks is the same as 1lb of feathers. LOL
Colloquially, I think it's actually not wrong to say "muscles weighs more than fat." What they pretty much mean is "muscle is denser than fat." When things are the same size, the weight is indeed higher if it's muscle vs. if it's fat.
I am fifty and never get on the scale. I lift very heavy, eat really well (clean whole food,) take quality supplements, get good sleep, avoid alcohol and refined sugar and processed, conventional foods. I can’t wait to shred down this spring to see how much muscle definition I actually have. Right now I’m ‘bulking’ and I absolutely love it. I’m trim, you can se some abs sometimes, and I’m super curvy in all the right places, and strong. No one believes how old I am. Shoot, I may even compete..
I think you might have finally gotten through to me about the scale... I know I shouldn't judge my progress by the scale, and yet I continue to do so! I can feel and see I'm getting a bit leaner, but the scale doesn’t show weight loss. I might be finally ready to ditch the scale and measure progress in other ways.
Old habits and patterns are definitely hard to change. But when we want a new and better results, we have to find ways to shift what we've always done! :-)
Letting go of a goal number on the scale is very challenging. I’m working out harder and trying to eat more protein and am gaining weight. It’s mentally challenging 😥
It is. But that's why showing ourselves all the ways it is paying off and celebrating even the habit consistency is key! Having a clothing item to use as reference can be a great way to FEEL the positivity of the changes :-)
Thank you! I lost 10 pounds SUPER quick when I made significant changes to my diet (started counting macros) and haven't lost any weight since and it's been six months. Although I looked leaner after that, now I just look like I'm maintaining in my waist area (which honestly is all I care about). BUT my muscles are actually getting more defined so I think I'm doing good with it. I'm not giving up now 💪
Thank you for your advice.. I was 112 before having two kids then 144 then 138 and stayed there forever then got a calorie counting app got to 130 and I felt like starving my self bc it won’t loose from there yet my body is looking tighter and slimmer but it bounces from 130 129 131. But it makes sence bc I’m gaining muscle too so ty so much for the way you explained it . I don’t have to starve myself I can still eat clean and healthy but I’m probably gaining muscle … You have a good heart to take your time and talk to ppl
I stumbled upon your video at the perfect time. I've been feeling discouraged lately. Even though I AM noticing a difference in the way I look and feel in my clothes, I thought it was all in my head since the scale isn't moving. I have a Withings scale like someone else mentioned here, and I've been letting it take all the protagonism in my fitness journey. I've been weightlifting consistently for four months, doing all the major compound lifts, steadily increasing weight, feeling more confident with my movements, etc. yet it's so easy to lose track of the small everyday wins when we're using the wrong metric to measure our success. This video is gold. Thank you!
It truly is so easy to lose sight of the small daily wins. They will snowball. But so often we end up giving up before they have a chance to because we are so focused only on one measure of success. Keep up those amazing habits!
My body did not start truly changing for the better until I stopped weighing myself on the scale. I allowed the scale sabotage my progress until one day I said, “I’m done. I’m just going by how my clothes fit.” It works for me 😊
I stopped doing cardio. Changed everything. I eat extremely healthy, walk and do lots of heavy lifting in my daily life. Im much slimmer now and toned. Compared to when i was depleting myself with exercise.
I just found your channel and I'm so happy I did. I'm currently fighting a battle in my head with the scale. I lost quite a few pounds when I had Invisalign (which did improve some of my eating habits too!) and I know some of that was muscle, but darn it, I loved how I looked and needing to buy smaller clothes. I knew some would come back but I'm still struggling with the scale number as I feel like a total failure. I also started working out more regularly a few months ago. I found a class I love, and look forward to. I've definitely gotten stronger too. Yet here I am today, scale up a few pounds (weight, water, bloat, I don't know) and my mind is alternating between "You're too fat, cut more calories, don't eat" and "Forget it, it's not worth it, eat everything". So hard, when I "know" what's going on. The scale is comfort, good or bad. Man, I have a lot of work to do. Thank you for your clear explanations. I'm off to watch more of your videos (and maybe take a few measurements and photos along the way too).
I think recognizing the impact different tools have on us and TRACKING those other habits to keep us from sabotaging ourselves is key. I find I let "outcome" goals impact me less when I'm tracking the daily habit changes more. I see what I may be deviating on and also what I have dialed in and it helps me know I'm doing the things necessary to move forward even if the lag measure isn't yet there! KEEP IT UP! You've got this!
I month of eating clean, non processed foods, prioritising protein, walking and exercising and slight drop in scales but body image visibly better. I needed to hear this. But I still need to see the weight move 😅
So true, without fuel (food) less weight, but also less muscles. It is an art to find out how much to eat, to lose fat and don't lose muscles. I hate my scale.
Thank you for this. I got really sick and lost 20 lbs in 2022, mostly muscle from not being able to eat for 2 months without it coming back up. As a former athlete, it was difficult to see how much that harmed my body. When I first gained weight back, it was mostly fat and I had a super high body fat percentage for my weight. After seeing this, I said enough is enough and started tweaking my macros to fit a progressive overload training program. Fourteen months later, I've gained 20 lbs and lost 8% body fat. It has been a LOT of consistent work and discipline, but the results have been so worth it. I'm not stopping now! 😅
That was the most concerning thing I saw on the Stanford twin study, how those 2 women lost so much muscle mass! Eye opening! Your explanation makes sense and takes some of the fear away. Thanks!
Years ago i hit a weight loss stall and i finally upped my calories and bam i started dropping fat weight again. My healthy caloric intake has been as high as 3500 calories and weight stayed the same.Very active and with a lot of energy
Been really consistent with macros, calorie deficit, and resistance training for 6 months. I started out by being able to lift 30lbs and now I can lift 165 (3 reps of 8)!
Today I had a mental breakdown because I've been training (very hard and in a calorie deficit) for a month and I've gained 1kg. I'm obese, 99kg, so I was hoping to lose at least 3kg. I'm still very sad, but this video came at the right time to help me deal with it. Thank you.
Glad it helps. It can be frustrating when we are working hard and not feeling our hard work pay off. Make sure to focus on even one small change for next week to keep implementing those healthy habits!
Thank you for sharing this !! You so spot on which is why I gave up the scale. I recently didn’t see the scale change much but noticed I felt lighter and my bra and pants fit a bit looser. 💯💪🏽
One of the best things I ever did for myself is eat more and stop looking at the scale. My weight hasn't changed at all but I'm a whole dress size down 4 months into recomp. My relationship with food is good, I can eat things that I like to eat in moderation, I don't feel like I'm on a diet. And as a person who formerly hated exercise... the gym is now my temple 😅
Omg I needed this I've always been a big person and I'm trying to use that to my advantage and gain more muscle and lose fat thanks for the reassurance 💗
Thank u so much. Ive been working hard on eating better and put in 1 hr of workout daily for the past 2 months but only lost 15 pounds and these past 2 weeks my scale has been stuck in the sam number. But my clothes are fitting better and even loose now.
Glad I saw this video. I currently do IF and trying to eat less carbs/sugar. I also stopped snacking. I lost almost 3 kilos in 15 days, just water weight I guess. I am on my 5th week now and the total weight loss is barely 4 kilos. But I already lost 7cm around my waist, and my bras fit better because I lost fat on my upper back. I will continue what I'm doing and won't feel bad just because the scale is not showing the numbers I'm hoplng to see. Thanks for this video.😊❤
Heck yes! That helps you focus on the healthy habits you know you need!
Great job! Mind shifts like this are what changed everything for me! In fact, consider giving your scale away!
I am doing the same. Thought I would be the only one....😊
Let's keep it up!🎉
It’s NOT working for me.
What do you recommend 😢
That low body fat and low muscle mass aesthetic to weigh as little as possible used to be it back then 😆
@@auricia201 It's not odd that females would want to do that
I don’t get what you’re saying? We’re you the “leanest looking” girl at the sleepover if so I get what you mean.
I look lean and get told all time I’m so small but I’m heaviest I’ve been in long time with great muscle gains😊
"Skinny fat" is definitely a thing. 45 years ago, my then 17-year old best friend was 5'8", 125 lbs, and had a HUGE flabby stomach.
I think you might have saved me from ruining weeks of progress... I needed to hear this!
So glad it helped!
Same. I was about to cut calories because my lower tummy is still hanging on :/
Me too. I was about to to walk away😂😂😂😂
I just found this video ...as I was searching for strength workouts to gain muscle for women over 40. Can't describe how relieved I feel to hear such things. Have u any videos with such workouts?
This video makes me feel so much better. I only lost 4 pounds in a month but lost a couple inches in some trouble areas. I gotta keep pushing it
That is AMAZING and REAL results not just water weight being lost! KEEP IT UP!
Congrats on your achievement. Slow and steady wins the race AND keeps loose skin at bay. 💪🎉
@@redefiningstrengthOC Your comment just made me feel so good because I also lost only about 2 kilograms within month and I thought I’m doing bad 😭 Even though I’m just trying to make this part of my routine and not just to get quick results, it’s still hard because deeply you want to lose it all quickly haha
I really need to take a break from wages, thanks for the video!
I have a hard time getting definition in my arms 😒
No one else (that I’ve heard) is saying/telling me what you are saying - and what you’re explaining is exactly what I need to understand. Thank you so much for sharing your expert knowledge and making it so clear for me. 🤗
So glad the video helped :-)
Thank you. I had lost my way. I got fixated on the scales. Not my fitness and protein levels.

It definitely makes all the sense in the world, but the weight on the scale has been beaten in us our whole life, so I suspect it's going to take a minute to retrain my mind. ❤❤❤
Thanks for all you do to help .
It definitely takes time to retrain ourselves and shift our focus. But I think the more knowledge we gain and awareness even of our own patterns and thoughts, the more we an shift them to work for us instead of against us :-) But always a process!
And it is what your doctor will look at and berate you over.
Congrats on all those lifestyle changes! And love that you're seeing that body recomp and focusing on those other forms of measurement!
So true that the scale doesn’t show everything. I thought I wasn’t making progress because the scale was staying the same, but then I realized my clothes were fitting different and later people asked if I was losing weight.
YESSS! That true body recomp happening!
My clothes still are NOT fitting different. I’ve added weights AND resistance to routine. Added in more protein. I’m 50 and I feel and look 6 months pregnant(and, NO, I’m NOT pregnant)…
Trueee same here..clothes fitting differently now weight still the same ang friends noticed it
So glad I seen this although I know this I needed to hear it … because the scale has stayed the same for a week or so…
Cardio
Love the dramatic music to further emphasise the key points you are making-thanks for another terrific offering Cori
hehe thank you! All Ryan's doing!
3:35 it starts.
@sunnygirlrn Would you mind giving an example of what you eat in a day?
Girl, I could listen to you ALL DAY!! thank you!!!
hehe thanks Lisa!
Love it! Sounds like you are focusing on the right things and meeting yourself where you are at to make lasting habit shifts!
The reason my scale isn’t shifting much- but I’m looking so much more fit! Thanks for this!! 💪🏽💪🏽
YES! That body recomp happening!
Thank you!!
WOO HOOO! Great job beastette! KEEP GOING with those healthy habit changes!
Yes as a trainer I always said, a pound of muscle takes up less space, but a pound of fat takes too much space. It helps women who worry about becoming bulky or looking manly. How hard you look is determined by how much fat you keep. You can be fit and soft looking if you want that.
Muscle is greatly important for longevity and youthfulness and quality of senior life.
Yes! Muscle is key! And you can achieve so many aesthetics while having muscle on to feel strong and fabulous!
Omg this is what i need. I start weightlifting for 2 months and gained 1kg. I feel better but my weight increase. I feel really down everytime i check on my weight. Thank you
Definitely focusing on those other forms of measurements to help you track progress!
Thanks!
Saving this to revisit many times! Thank you for sharing so much encouraging, no-bs wisdom. Currently in a cut and started getting attached to the scale, and this gave me new perspective.

I'm still trying to heal my body from years of damage from that stupid horrible fitness information I feel like I'm not the only one , I love this message so much more and the awesome thing is we can build muscle and still have a healthy menstrual cycle, as long as we're eating enough protein and calories of course
Something that stupid book and magazines never said
I feel like many of us have fallen into patterns we wish we hadn't based on the information we had available to us, or pushed on us, at the time. But I love that you're seeking to learn and move forward and heal your body to move and feel your best now. Keep it up!! And glad the video helped!

All about making small changes based on where we are currently. No one size fits all and there are lots of ways to strike our lifestyel balance!
Love this focus on those wins in other ways! It helps us keep progressing in the habits we need to see results snowball!
Love that you've found these other methods of tracking progress! So key!
She was probably also doing HCG shots... that's what they tell you that the shot frees up calories that your bodies consume so you don't feel hungry.
Very well explained! I used to hear this already, but nobody explained it better than you did. Thank you so much for this information!
I am working out 5 days a week since two months and I only lost 1 kilo on the scale. I see this as a huge win since I am sure I am building a lot of muscles on the way.
Love you're focusing on that body recomp!
Inspiration ! Your before and after pictures are truly amazing! You look like a totally different person😮😊
Thanks! Granted I did actually BRUSH my hair in the second one 😂
So glad the video helps! Love your focus on recomp! You've got this!
Love that you're getting back into a groove and focusing on those habits! You've got this! And so glad the video helped!
You always drop amazing info here, but am I crazy or did your editing or production value just jump up a lot? Slick. Love the info and the delivery. Great video.
Aw shucks thanks! Hopefully more at this standard coming! :-)
Good luck to all….it truly has been a “healing” journey for me….✌🏽❤️🇨🇦
So glad you've found what works for you and ways to use the tools and data to help!
Thank you 🙏🏻 for your service. Glad to know you’re doing much better now. ❤
You hit the nail on the head, I am so obsessed with the scale. I did lose a couple of pounds but my doctor did tell me I don’t eat enough protein smh . Listen to you I have a clearer understanding thanks.
So glad the video helped!
a few years ago this video would make me angry and frustrated because i was starving myself and binging over and over again, now i understand this and im glad i’ve finally reached this level of understanding at 20 years old, it would have saved my teenage years but late is better than never, thank you.
We're always learning and growing!
Thank you! Going into my second week wondering when the stubborn area will loose inches. My scale shows fat loss %
It’s going down due to 1st week water loss but stubborn areas measuring the same.
Some reason I don’t want photos, I have enough of what I don’t want to see.
I’m watching my arms and legs…
When my head is bigger than my body and my arms look like yours then I will be at my goal.
I do want to be at 25% body fat at maintenance.
Now I’m 42% fat
Taking those measurements is key and being patient past the point we want to quit. Although I would really recommend taking progress pictures as they do show recomp. Keep up your consistency!
I SEE RESULTS IN MUSCLE GROWTH AND FIBERS ARE SHOWING. AND OF COURSE THE CLOTHES ARE SHRINKING IN SIZES!
Loved this video. It really helped to put everything into perspective.
So glad it helped!
It all
Makes so much sense now.
WOO HOO! Love that you're seeing that body recomp! Keep it up!!
This is so true. I went down 3 sizes and remained the same exact weight. And it was obvious from looking at me I was much smaller and in much better shape. Great video!❤
YES! That body recomp happening!
The footage, angles and editing are so good! I love watching the videos as much as listening to the info!
Thank you!
HECK YES! Those are amazing results and body recomp happening! KEEP IT UP!
Absolutely love your facial expressions! Thanks for keeping it real! ❤💪🏼🔥
hehe thanks! Having some fun :-)
The Storm; perfect choice of opening music!!!! I refuse to step on my scale, but use my belt and mirror to judge me!
Great idea with the belt as a form of measurement!
@@redefiningstrengthOC I have dropped from about 42 inches to about 33 over 3 years.
Thank you! So glad the video helped! Love that you're focusing on how your clothes fit as that truly is the best indicator of body recomp!
Welcome to RS! Great job rocking that body recomp!!
Listen to the lady, she is absolutely rigth. We need more channels talking about the importance of tracking your body fat % instead of the weight
Good to know I’m doing it right. The scale still says I’m heavy but my clothes are just a bit looser. Even still, the exercise and healthier eating habits make me feel so much better so it’s worth it for that alone.
YAASSS! Love that you're recognizing all the ways that the healthy habits are paying off!
Thank u for this video I feel alot better about my weight journey after having two babies within two yrs and I’m in my 40s!
So glad it helps!
I had a Nurse Practitioner argue with me when I pointed out that Muscle does not weigh more than fat, even when I used props to show her that muscle just takes up less space. LOL
1lb of bricks is the same as 1lb of feathers.
Love it! Fabulous Gwen! Keep up your hard work and consistency! Best of luck to you if you compete!
So glad the video helped! It is a hard mindset to shift especially when it is a tool we've used for so long! But tracking in these other ways is key!
Old habits die hard as I’ve gotten on the scale first am every day for years. I needed this simple straight forward exploration. Thank you!
I'm not giving up now 💪
YAAASS! Keeping at those healthy habits we started is key. So often we give up on things when it doesn't feel like results are building but they are!
I don’t have to starve myself I can still eat clean and healthy but I’m probably gaining muscle …
You have a good heart to take your time and talk to ppl
@@redefiningstrengthOC Thank you!💪🫶🤩
My body did not start truly changing for the better until I stopped weighing myself on the scale. I allowed the scale sabotage my progress until one day I said, “I’m done. I’m just going by how my clothes fit.” It works for me 😊
LOVE that you found the form of tracking progress that helps you feel your most fabulous!
Measuring tape, and the balance together is the key. Getting smaller with the tape and gaining, keeping or losing weight is just not as important!
I stopped doing cardio. Changed everything. I eat extremely healthy, walk and do lots of heavy lifting in my daily life. Im much slimmer now and toned. Compared to when i was depleting myself with exercise.
Glad you found your balance and you're making sure to truly fuel your activity!
@@redefiningstrengthOC Great advice - thanks again!
I month of eating clean, non processed foods, prioritising protein, walking and exercising and slight drop in scales but body image visibly better. I needed to hear this. But I still need to see the weight move 😅
Keep at those healthy habits and find things you can consistently do! Those daily changes add up. It just takes often longer than we'd like!
So true, without fuel (food) less weight, but also less muscles.
It is an art to find out how much to eat, to lose fat and don't lose muscles.
I hate my scale.
It truly is. And I think at times we will need to adjust as our body, needs and goals evolve.
HECK YES! Making those changes, meeting yourself where you are at and rocking those results! Great job!
Thank you so so much! You have no idea how much this helped. I was starting to give up but I resonated with the points that you made
I'm so glad it helped! Keep it up!
Q
That was the most concerning thing I saw on the Stanford twin study, how those 2 women lost so much muscle mass! Eye opening! Your explanation makes sense and takes some of the fear away. Thanks!
Muscle truly is metabolic magic and key to functionally staying fit till our final day on this planet. We want to do everything we can to maintain it!
Thank you! I so needed all of these reminders today!
You answer a question I’ve been asking forever . Losing size and not losing a lot of weight is losing fat and that’s ok 👍🏻
YAASS! Inches being lost shows fabulous recomp!
Years ago i hit a weight loss stall and i finally upped my calories and bam i started dropping fat weight again. My healthy caloric intake has been as high as 3500 calories and weight stayed the same.Very active and with a lot of energy
Making sure to fuel our activity level and training is key to helping us see that body recomp! Love that you've embraced that process.
That’s an amazing learning experience! Nicely put! 👏
Been really consistent with macros, calorie deficit, and resistance training for 6 months. I started out by being able to lift 30lbs and now I can lift 165 (3 reps of 8)!
Great job!
Thank you for making this video. Very informative!
Been watching you for years. Always delivering good fitness content.
Thank you!
Thank you for sharing this !! You so spot on which is why I gave up the scale. I recently didn’t see the scale change much but noticed I felt lighter and my bra and pants fit a bit looser. 💯💪🏽
YES! Seeing that body recomp happening with how your clothing is fitting! Love it! Congrats on those results building!
Love it! Making those sustainable changes and fueling your body to see that recomp happening!
I love this! As a cheer coach I’m always looking for different ways/ideas to help the girls get more flexible!
I'm glad it helped but have to admit I'm slightly confused...This video is about the scale and body recomp measurements?
Omg I needed this I've always been a big person and I'm trying to use that to my advantage and gain more muscle and lose fat thanks for the reassurance 💗
So glad it helps!
One pound of muscle is the same weight as one pound of fat? I was blown away at that statement!
So glad the explanation helped!
Great video!! Answered all my concerns since I started Calisthenics at 48. Thank you!!
So glad it helps!
Thank u so much. Ive been working hard on eating better and put in 1 hr of workout daily for the past 2 months but only lost 15 pounds and these past 2 weeks my scale has been stuck in the sam number. But my clothes are fitting better and even loose now.
Sounds like you're seeing that recomp! Keep it up!
Scale is a useful tool to help you see the progress, but a mirror is even more useful.
Knowing the upsides and downsides to the way we track progress is key to help us make changes and keep moving forward!
Sounds like you're losing inches, seeing body recomp and making changes that will help those results snowball! Great job!
