    I was born in 1962. I have been wearing hearing aids since I was 2 years old. My hearing is at a 92% loss. I am now 59 years old. Back in 1964, hearing aids then were the "body harness" hearing aid that looked like a transistor radio with 2 cords running to my ears.
    I had always dealt with Beltone through the years. Beltone had always asked me what improvements could be made, even though I was just a kid. Somebody was listening to my suggestions all those years.
    In 1970 Beltone had the very first prototype behind the ear hearing aid, I was their "experimental model" to try these out. ( I even came out on a cover of a book by Beltone for this. I wish I knew what my mom did with that book) I thought the behind the ears were great.... no more cords to mess with from the harness aid.
    As technology improved Beltone had always asked what improvements could still be done. I told them I love to listen to music and said," If only the hearing aids could be my own personal radio as well"
    I just got these new Oticon hearing aids from Beltone 31 March 2021 and I am hearing things I have never knew existed..... after all these years. These hearing aids are unbelieveable especially for my 92% hearing loss.
    I love the bluetooth technology. A friend called me up the same day I got the hearing aids and I asked him if he was driving in the rain with windsheild wipers on..... Yes, I could hear that!
    Also, I love the fact that I can play my favorite iTune playlist through the hearing aids without disturbing anybody. Also, now my wife is impressed because now instead of the television blaring at volume50-60 I now have it at 19 and now my wife can not hear the television. To me, this is great. I just can not get over how great it is to hear things I never knew exsisted!
    People may think the price is high but I say it is worth every penny

      More and more people have hearing loss and the percentages growing the world today is too much noisy (cars, concerts, AirPods 24/7, Corona virus LOL etc) I think we will see the first cure in 7-10 years, the cure for tinnitus we take decades in my opinion

    I just wish hearing aid companies would give you a trade in value for your previous aids, they could refurbished them and resell them and give new buyers more of a chance to keep upgrading without continuing to break the bank!

    • @DrCliffAuD
      @DrCliffAuD  3 года назад +2

      We kind of have a few problems with this. First, is demand. There is simply not a very robust demand for used hearing aids. Until there is significant market demand for used devices, the trade in value will not be very high. There is a demand for receiving a high trade in value, but unless those devices can be sold at a profit, the economics will not work. Looking at resale values on Ebay, the demand for used hearing aids just isn't there. Second, the vast majority of the value in a hearing aid is the professional care. Even if you were able to buy a used hearing aid, you would likely have to spend a significant amount of money to get the devices fit and re-programmed.

    • @ChangesOneTim
      @ChangesOneTim 2 года назад +1

      @@DrCliffAuD
      Fair points, Doc, but I wonder if it's simply not in the industry's interests to generate demand by increasing awareness! As you say all today's devices leave the factory as 'blank canvases', so it's dead easy to wipe all old programs and reuse afresh.
      The USA model is different I know, but perhaps over on my side of the Atlantic private dispensers and the National Health Service can make the 'economics' work on both sides through collaboration? To thousands of NHS patients, far better to be treated soon with used 3yo but good quality systems, than stay many months (sometimes a scandalous 18 months) on the waiting list for rationed new systems that won't necessarily be any better for them. Option 3 of course is get tired of waiting and go without.
      Or how about the private sector collaborating with charity and/or government health organisations to make repurposing for this world's poorest nations a routine thing?
      All of these ideas are 'safe' for clients in that fitting and aftercare stays with professionals rather than risking the horrors of personal purchase online. Plus all of them bring net-zero-carbon benefits as with any repurposing of electronic devices. Just needs enough people with influence and seedcorn dollars to look beyond existing balance sheets and private/ public ideology then make it happen.😁

    FYI you can provide your own cell phone type battery pack and plug it into the charger to charge the hearing aids, it doesn't have to be plugged into a wall. I have tested and confirmed this. It may be able to charge by plugging it into a computer USB port as well, although i haven't tested this. I like how the cable has a USB on the end of it and the adapter to plug into the wall can be added or removed.

    • @RBEmerson
      @RBEmerson 3 года назад

      In general, USB charging is very source agnostic, "wall wart", computer, battery pack... Its data connections where the USB cable matters (some cables are USB power only) but AFAIK that doesn't apply here. The only question is how many amps are needed by the charger. There two ratings for chargers, 2.4 amps, and 1.8 or 1.5 amps. If you plug a low current demand into a 2.4A socket, no problem - the device draws what it needs and no more. Plug a 2.n+ device into a 1.8A, No fuses pop, but the device may or may not behave correctly - "your mileage may vary". I have no idea what the Oticon chargers need - maybe that's buried somewhere in the specs. Or email Oticon customer support. Hope this helps.

      Here is a good thing with newer hearing aids - you can get used Oticon Opn 1 for a fraction of the More price, get them adjusted and be pretty much ok. I am not a native English speaker living in New Zealand and at times struggling with a local accent feel pretty confident after a year of wearing Opn1 (not S). And I did not have to break a bank for that. So, used ones also a good option. And modern marketing lets this option to be even more affordable as new models emerge.

    I’m a month in with my Oticon More 2’s and love them. The clarity of the sound is great,especially in noisy environments. When in a crowded, noisy environment the background noise drops and the person you’re talking to is so crisp and clear. Don’t understand how the technology does that, but it works! My only complaint is that streaming music or calls to the aids really eats up the battery charge. If I stream while I’m taking a morning walk, by afternoon they need recharging. So I mostly use EarPods when streaming to save recharging the aids. If you have an Apple iPhone, I believe you must have IOS 13 or above to use the Oticon On app, but Apples built in program under Settings, General, Accessibility, Hearing aids works fine for me to act as a remote. 3 taps to the Home button brings the hearing aid settings to the desktop making it easy to make adjustments.

I hear birds and clicks and bells that I didn’t hear before which is wonderful but I don’t hear voices as well as I thought I would which was obviously a disappointment. Someone else here on this thread said hearing aids are getting to be like iPhones. Something a little newer a little better always coming around the corner. I’d like to try these new ones but with no trade-in or not sure what to do with the old ones seems like a waste unless there is some crazy significant difference. Thanks Dr. Cliff. I got the latest OPN’s in September. They replaced an earlier version of the OPN from three years prior (insurance covers every 36 months. My hearing loss is unusual in that my left ear has a 40db hearing loss with about 85% on the word recognition score, but a 90 db loss and a whopping 12% word recognition score on the right ear. I was struggling with the old OPNs, mainly because my right ear had sudden hearing loss about five months after I got the new set (which replaced a Widex for my left ear only). The new OPNs helped quite a bit. I’m guessing as a result of my word recognition score that something like the More wouldn’t be that much of an improvement over the OPNs. At any rate, in another three years, I’m sure the technology will be far ahead of anything we have now.

    I was fitted with Oticon More miniRITE 1 and was really excited. But there was an insurmountable problem: on every program there was an audible hiss. The General program was the worst with an aggressive white-noise. The least objectionable program was the Oticon Music setting, with a subdued brown-noise, used for streaming; it was the only one that didn’t make me irritable in daily use. My audiologist tried to adjust the hiss out but wasn’t able to do so. She also remarked that several of her other patients had this hiss problem.

I am new to HAs and just had my first evaluation and this particular doctor recommended the Oticon More 2 (as that is what my insurance will partially remit for). Accordingly, she told me the Oticon More 1 would be full out of pocket and more than I'm willing to pay at this time. I have moderate hearing lost in one ear and slightly worse in the other. Anyway, my question is about the More 2 as opposed to the More 1. Generally, what I understand is the More 1 is fully automatic and the More 2 step down in features requires a manual adjustment if entering into a different sound environment. Is this the case? Also, I am considering buying only one for my worse ear now and then purchasing the second one maybe in a year should the technology advance even more. Your thoughts on that? Do these Oticon offer firmware upgrades to existing models to keep up with technological improvements? Thanks for any info you are willing to share.

While she has an active lifestyle for 91 it is what I would call a quiet one. For her, would there be a real difference in her hearing experience between the different levels.? Or best to save some money and just buy the basic level? Thanks!

I tried a pair of the Oticon More hearing aids for a week. I really enjoyed the hearing aids except for one thing. There was slight delay in the sound reaching my ear. It made the sound of music on legato tones warble. Being a professional musician makes this issue unacceptable in a hearing aid. It addressed the high frequency hearing loss just fine accept for the warble. She was not able to address the warbling issue with the Oticon hearing aid. Any suggestions? I have a tough time justifying a $6000 investment with a warble in my ear...

    Dr. Cliff, thank you for these videos. I've been using the More1 for about 3 weeks now. I'm very happy with the fit and performance except I find the higher frequencies to be over amplified and very annoying...what we used to call 'extremely bright' when describing audio speakers. I understand some of this is due to my loss of upper frequencies for so many years but it still is very annoying to me. My next appointment with the audiologist will include RET and I'm hoping my concern can be addressed. Are these units capable of attenuating volume at higher frequencies.

    I am about to purchase me first hearing aids and am favoring the Oticon devices. I have tried the previous level 3 Oticon device and the new Oticon More level1 device. I know that you provided the metrics for the individual More device levels but what difference would I notice between a Level 1 More devices and a level 2 or 3 More device (assuming the audiologist has adjusted them correctly) There is a large different prices in the Oticon More Model levels but as the level 2 & 3 devices are not available yet I am wondering whether I should wait for them to be available so that I could test them.

      2) Speech Clarity: Depends on situation. I have people that insist on whispering to me regardless of how many times I tell them I can’t understand those soft sounds.
      Amplification: with the app, that is great because I can easily adjust that as needed
      For me, the devices give sound a lot of depth to sound and make sounds richer. Not sure about noise cancellation, 7 or 8 on clarity and 9 on amplification.

      On paper, MORE should have superior audio performance. There is a multitude of research material from the past six years confirming the benefits that "Deep Neural Network" sound suppression can have on audibility. The technology has been there, but the hearing aid hardware was not powerful enough to run it.
      In 2020 a similar technology has been implemented by companies such as Microsoft (Teams), Discord and Nvidia, to replace conventional noise reduction algorithms.

First question is, given he mostly deals with home and doctor offices and multiple speakers, who gives the richest most natural sound--Oticon More or Resound Omnia? Second, audiologist said Oticon More 2 and Resound Omnia 7 are fine, we don't need the higher technology. I can't help but feel that though the top technologies help with concerts and such and dad won't be going to concerts, that there would be in less complex situations some enhanced sound quality with the top technology hearing aids, i.e. Oticon More 1 and the Resound Omnia 9. I need some definiitive direction: Oticon More 1, Oticon More 2, Resound Omnia 9 or 7? Please help. I get it's half of one and two of the other, I just need direction towards the best hearing experience for dad, that is natural, full and is no question the best at picking up speech of all ranges. Which one is it of the four?

    Nice overview, but LOTS of company-speak. Are you able to point to any *independent* data on how well this approach delivers improved speech understanding in *real world* signal-to-noise ratios? I haven’t found any. Of particular interest is how this approach works for people with poor inner hair cell integrity as measured by recorded, full-length mono-syllable word recognition testing. Thanks in advance for any insights you may have or know of.

    • @DrCliffAuD
      @DrCliffAuD  3 года назад

      At the time of any hearing aid release there is no independent data yet. No hearing aid will improve poor inner hair cell function, only outer hair cell function. This is why when IHCs become too damaged that Cochlear Implants are needed.

    • @bradingrao8496
      @bradingrao8496 3 года назад +1

      Agreed, which is why it troubles me to hear these being touted for losses up to severe where we know there has be at least some IHC degradation. I’m not saying it’s a bad hearing aid, just that I don’t see any evidence that it may be “better” than previous techs for those with more than the mild (OHC-only” loss. Focusing on this plumb market isn’t a bad thing, but I feel the industry’s and those representing it, even tacitly, have a greater responsibility to be transparent in the fact that the “new” stuff wasn’t built for folks with moderate or worse hearing loss.
