Probably one of my favorite golf lessons I've seen. I watch it over and over and keep coming back to it whenever I feel my swing getting chunky. Matt, I love your passion, I love your enthusiasm, and I love the way you simplify things, more about what to feel instead of getting over analytical with swing thoughts. Thank you and keep helping people enjoy this game
Around 9:00 you mentioned to release past the ball. As I meditate on my swing I realized that if my right elbow comes against my right side ,to the side of my right hip, then I am forced to release early. In a more recent video with over 90,000 views in one day , you discussed the proper grip with the right hand. Placing the right elbow in front of the right hip. Then gripping the club.
Best game changing instruction available in the internet. Believe me, I've seen hundreds of videos and instructors. High, pure energy, very sound, simple practical no BS golf tips and technique. You make me smile every time and you've helped my game tremendously. Thanks from Paris, France.
MrShortGame, Im following your tutorials and had very big impact on my game. I'm playing golf for about 10 and never had a teacher... only you. My game was around 100-105 or more. Last year late fall I beat the 90. 2019 the goal is to reach 85 or better and Im working on regardless of the cold and snow we have here in Ontario, Canada. You very funny and easy to understand what you preach. Good job and thank you for your free training videos.
Only been playing a few years but already spent a lot on lessons, buckets at the range, and watched literally hundreds of hours of videos on RUclips. Hands-down this video has helped me the most of any other thing that I’ve seen so far. I cannot thank you enough for this content. I know you made this a while ago but it’s still helping people. Very much appreciated!
Matt, my husband and I started watching you around 3 months ago. We love you. You have helped us to improve our golf swing and short game tremendously. You give crystal clear instruction and make us laugh at the same time. This particular video is pure gold. You eliminated both of our sway on the back swing with Step 1. I started using Step 2 hands first to bring the club back. I used to lift the club head with my arm muscles to bring it back. Now it is effortless. Step 3 I'm practicing the plant/turn and my hands are starting to get ahead of the club. Yay. Please keep giving us these videos. You are a warm, wonderful, funny person and we love you.
The only thing better than listening to the advice you gave in this video is listening to the sound that your club makes when it strikes the ball. Awesome!!
I’ve watched so many RUclips videos. I do have to say you’re the most entertaining and easy to understand your step-by-step teaching. I’ve taken a lot of your information from your videos and brought it to my game and what an improvement. I’ve been playing for about 15 years and I did not know that you had to keep the club head feeling it’s closed through the entire swing. I have always open the club face in the backswing which makes the timing have to be perfect. Thanks for all the tips and your videos I definitely will keep on watching. And I also do agree you should’ve been in that tournament that they left you out on.👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
no one ever told me to drive the right heel down it forces the hips to rotate.. This is amazing. It almost naturally pulls me to the inside. when watching my swing back in slow mo my early release is almost goner. Great stuff,
Extrodinary how you have freshly analysed the game and shown us how to “feel” what we’re supposed to be doing. I’m new to your site but already reaping the benefits. Thanks a lot.
Excellent, this is probably the best tutorial out there, not just for release but for general swing mechanics. I'd watched so many videos and had the hips and timing worked out pretty good and was striking the ball pretty well I think but always struggled with chunking shots. Nowhere had I ever seen mentioned about moving the hands first before the club head. Maybe that's assumed but I was always moving the club first. Just went to the range to use this method, I immediately could tell I was compressing the ball better and was achieving probably 10-15m more distance on the mid irons and was actually getting good performance from my 4 iron. The sound of the ball striking the face was noticeably different from before too.
Matt, i have watched and saved many of your videos, BUT this one is ME!! As i look outside with the snow falling, inside my garage you can hear the club releasing at the garage door!! I better call Overhead Door Company. Thanks
I've watched the likes of Mark Crossfield since he started. I have to admit though that RUclips has got a bit stale. I am English and just love your approach to this. Only someone from the states could make tips this entertaining and easy to follow. I love your enthusiasm and you are now my favourite GolfTuber.
Hi Matt, I have berm watching so many golf pro in utube but no one realy help to improve my golf skill until I watching you months ago.. you realy help my golf skill and I like your funny words and expression. Thanks.
Matt, love the way you go about explaining everything you do . The energy you bring with few words and a lot of action it fields like you are right there in my face trying to get it through my head . Thank you so much for your great work .
Wow !!! you pick the words right out of my mouth. I've never taken any golf lesson in my whole 40+ years of playing the sport but this one is really scratching my back. You just put all those most effective movement so easy to understand and I'm eager to reshape my golf swing like I'm a beginner haha thank you and best wishes to you.
@mrshortgamegolf I’m late to the party on this one ... fantastic job and thank you for your creativity and high level of sincerity in explaining ... we appreciate you!
Yes, Yes it's working for me. The most inspiring thing you've said is no we can't drive as long as the pros but our short game can be as good if we work at it. 78 year old Scottish golfer.
You enthusiasm is contagious! Love your video and I especially appreciate your thorough articulation and demonstration of the early release. I've been told that is an issue for me, and I was having a hard time understanding what an early release was and how to go about fixing it. Your video is a definite take away for me to now start myself on the road to fixing my early release. Thanks again, Mr. Short Game.
Step 2 (move hands back) provided an epiphany. Though the move does look weird and I was skeptical, I tried it and it immediately helped correct my swing plane and greatly improved ball contact.
Watched this in bed last night and started thinking, wtf this guys crazy.. glad I persevered! Love the energy and most importantly its shown me the feeling of actually releasing the golf club! Works nicely in the garden, hopefully can translate to the range this week! Looking forward to going through the other videos for more great tips!
What great tips. I have always struggled with gripping the club to tight and releasing to early in my swing. I have watched this video numerous times and applied it at the range...the results were amazing! I hit about 200 balls today and every ball was pure and further than I had ever hit before, I had to stop after the blisters came, but did not want to. Amazing videos! Thank you.
Just started today. Wow this is amazing. You are able to break it down in to a nice easy understandable method. I instantly started hitting 20% longer. Just amazing. I am still working on the final release feeling. Just the hips, hands alone was a huge improvement.
Thank you so much for the video and your teaching style. A few minutes into the video and the process, I'm asking "Why, Why, Why?" But by minute ten, you perfectly answer the question! This is very effective teaching.
man you're a natural motivator and a great teacher !! i will watch that video every day untill i correct my release that make me send the ball up in the clouds since the last 10 years ahaha
Great video. I was having trouble with releasing early which caused a lot of fat shots and was killing my left wrist. This drill helped so much even after only 20 or 30 range balls
I have always " casted " or " flipped " my irons without knowing it was incorrect in the downswing, as I've always tried to pick the ball cleanly......this results in very inconsistent iron shots and frustration during my rounds.. ......this video explains how to impact the golf ball correctly .....thank you for posting
Great video! I’ve been struggeling with this part of my swing and this is so helpfull!! Going to spend a couple of hours on the range with this today. Thank you!
Always thought that the sequence was, hands, arms, shoulders, hips, downswing; reverse=hips, shoulders, arms, hands, ala Hogan teaching. Can't wait to try your method at the range. That swing you're using reminds me of Paul Stankowski👍
Really good video!! Its so easy to default to the ball. #5 is the key. I started focusing on releasing to the target, and all of sudden I could get to a deep finish position. I didnt really change anything else in my swing except my focus was to release to the target and not the ball. Of course if you have some issues with your swing, just releasing to target is not going to work. So you still need your fundamentals and good plane.
MSG, Just got back from the simulator and can't believe the results in the first hour of practice. The best previous results with my 56 wedge was around 65-75. My average with 7 iron was around 135-145 and surprisingly today after practicing your lesson the average of 10 shots was 150-155. I got 179 and right after 181. Usually I try to memorize the good shots, but I was so exited that I forgot what and how that happened. Wow, thanks to you :) With the driver I got same results as previous, but look forward to beat my 210-220 average in 10 shots. Thank you again!
This lesson worked great. I have always had the early release problem. My stop action selfies were hard to watch. I practiced the tips into my net and with wiffle balls across the yard. Then I played a 9hole par3 with the best results ever 2 bogies, 6 pars and a 150 yard birdie. I can't wait for my game tomorrow. Thanks my friend.
I’ll be honest. I started watching this and thought who is this crazy. As I started watching I read some comments and thought they were crazy. I went to the range today, used the 1-5 drills and thought OMG I am going crazy...it was an unbelievable change! My ball flight was lower, distance longer, club face square and released the club as promised well after impact. Thank you. 👍
Matt thank you for this lesson , step by step ... sequencing and getting each part of the swing in position inorder for me to strike the golf ball. Appreciate that last part in your video of hitting the ball out there ... NOT at the ball. I tend to get out of sequence mentally hitting the ball at the ball. Im excited to practice this this season...i ll let you know my progress. Thanks again appreciate you lessons , love your chanel keep it coming . Ivan
Matt, your video came back on my feed and reminded me of the sequence but frustrating part ...was i forgot the part of staying “ loose, Noodle like , fluent with the hands resulting in early release
I tried it today at the range. Very uncomfortable at first but soon I got used to it. After about 50 balls, I hit my best 5 iron .... Thank you. I will continue to work on it.
Awesome tips Mr. SG...your chipping tips were spot on and this time, release towards the target makes perfectly good sense. Now, let's fix the slice/fade. (mine.)
Probably one of my favorite golf lessons I've seen. I watch it over and over and keep coming back to it whenever I feel my swing getting chunky.

Thanks for breaking it all down so crisply. I've watched countless videos and this is one of the best.
I have started golf after 20 years of not playing. Surfed a LOT of video on golf and yours are far and away the best. Really appreciate your content.

Love your work. Great tip to move hips. You speak our language and I like the way you chat with enthusiasm
To the point too , some guys take all day about it

Light bulb moment for me for sure. Been watching lots of videos from golf instructors in youtube but this is by far the best.
Ive watched a lot of videos today on fixing the early release and this is the best one yet, to the range!!!

Your the man! Appreciate all you do for us golfers, taking your time to teach us is awesome
Your segment on release makes 100% sense. Thanks brother.

Everything else working, "Release at the target" is the key. The icing on the cake, if I may.
Excellent advice. Can't wait to go to the driving range tomorrow and test it out. Thank you.

Love your videos! Great energy and the way you break things down. Keep up the good work!
Good one..... Logical explanation behind each step of ur drill.... I'll try
Love your all videos MSG and this is one of your best.

I think you just explained swing to my 6 year old daughter I've been trying for months ,🇦🇺we love your Chanel
Epic learning from this old man. Thank you sir from Indonesia
Brilliant school of thought!
Currently, I am working with late release, cant wait to try these tips...yes, at my backyard.
Matt - your explanations make it very easy to understand, I can’t wait to practice this concept - does it work with the driver too. Thanks, Steve
Good question
This video, and step 2 specifically, has absolutely saved my swing
I'm curious. Do you do the "hands move first" thing on the course for your regular swing? Or just on the range? Thanks!
Excellent explanation!
your videos are incredibly helpful- THANK YOU! I want to play a round of golf with you !

Question? Should i practice with that rope drill that you did ? Appreciate your help.
I have used Azinger’s coach, John Redmond as my methodology for a long time. I think your principles are in the same vein. Really like your stuff
I tried it today at the range. Very uncomfortable at first but soon I got used to it. After about 50 balls, I hit my best 5 iron ....
Thank you. I will continue to work on it.
Swing the clubhead method in action there, great drill. Thank you👍🏻
Thank you sir
excellent drills my friend, love your passion for the game
Boomba!! Great stuff as always!!
