Holy cow. Not only does this address casting problems, but it ties together all of the fundamentals of a sound golf swing. Well done, Steve. This is one of your better videos.
This is fantastic! I have worked so hard on not casting by manipulating the wrists and delaying all to minimal but occasional success. This video changes everything. Thank you Steve.

This video is incredible. I have a golf net and an R10 at home. Video analysis told me that I'm casting the club so naturally I tried to fix it directly with hands and wrist positions. I started almost wearing out my hozel from the shanks. This video opened my eyes in what leading with the body actually feels like and deals with the actual cause of why your mind feels it needs to cast the club to make any contact. If I even just slowly rehearse what you were explaining the hands immediately drop down the body by just trying to maintain the "7". Thank you so much for this
The best drill I’ve see on you tube, and I’m a you tube junkie when it comes to golf videos.I was hitting behind the ball and thinning my shots, thanks keep them coming.
Thanks Steve. This helps with early extension also. Love watching old footage of Mike hitting driver. His hips are so open at impact. Well done, superb video👏👏👏👏👌🏌️♂️🏌️♂️🏌️♂️ hitting balls with the left without using the right arm to pin the left arm then hitting balls with the left using the right to maintain the number 7 was a lightbulb moment for me.😄😄

This provided The “aha moment” I needed, I finally felt what tension free arms feels like. I can’t wait to play using this video on rotation and tension free arms.
Best video on youtube explaining lag or lack there of. Not only does it create power but helps the club face square naturally. Baffles me that other instructors don't address hip rotation when speaking on these issues.
Thank you Steve. I had a stroke back in March. I couldn’t even hit a ball. I tried all sorts of different swings natural golf, stake and tilt. My driving distance was 160 - 170 yards. So when I saw your RUclips posts I’ve started hitting my 210-230 yards. My irons are straighter and more distance. I got my first set of clubs at the age of 12 55 years ago. Had a decent game. I thought I ‘twas going to quit until I found you. I can personally recommend your instructions to anyone that wants great distance and consistent golf swing.
Fantastic video. I have been trying to figure out how to stop casting. Watched many videos and tried many different approaches. Some helped me a little. However , this video laid it out for me. Did the frills with right and left arms. My golf hits were solid and consistent. Watching the video on the driving range really helped. Thanks again.
Love it, good way to show the casting not moving threw to finish, wonderful video! It helped me when I practice getting into the finish position (posing) without a club, to train myself not to stall out at the bottom of the swing, many repetitions of that. the thought of hitting the ball makes you stall rather than like you say moving to the finish! Steve stay safe, with all going on in today’s world! be safe and well! And Yes we’ll keep watching!
This is genius! This creates the sling shot approach with the swing. It makes all of the sense in the world and I must give this a try. It also takes the using of the arms out of the swing. I filmed myself and can see that I stop my lower body which causes the early release at the ball and why I don't take a divot. Do you have or can you make a video on this posting, pivoting and turning portion of your swing? What I am seeing is by moving the lower body and the chest around you are maintaining the centrifugal force on the club to strike the ball. Correct?
This is a great video. It has helped me immensely to correct my ball flight and compression. It does seem that I have lost a little distance hitting this way, but maybe it will come back or significantly increase after working on it for several months.
Fantastic video. Took this concept to the course yesterday and shot my lowest round of the year. Should we use the same concept with the driver where we are trying to hit up on the ball rather than down on the ball as we do with the irons? Is the answer just a matter of ball position? Clearing this up will really help. Thanks so much for all the great videos!
I’m going to work hard on this, I think it’s the answer to my stopping my rotation and flipping the ball left Thanks for all your videos, great explanation of how it’s supposed to be done ✅
This is your best video ever. It reminds me of throwing a baseball from the outfield to home plate. You have to pivot to your left side and u load your right elbow and wrists.
When I have people do this in person, total illumination often happens if I have them execute a submarine throw to the plate. First they miss way right before they realize they weren't turning enough to get the arm on line.
Steve, I never understood Mike’s “7” until this video. I went to the range today. I was finally hearing the “click” of good contact with the ball. I didn’t learn the 7 from other Mike Austin instructors. Once again I am excited about the game of golf. P S on 6/8/‘20 I turn 79. .
Happy Birthday Timothy! It can be tough for a 79 year old to keep the figure 7 intact as it involves a complete one foot balance and enough flexibility to turn through freely. Thanks for watching!
I try to push my left hip pocket around behind me as the “7” moves from facing the resting golf ball to facing the flying golf ball approach the target. It puts the left leg into action as a major force in the rotational action. Instead of it being a stopping place for the upper torso rotation.
Thank U a million times for this exellent video. I love the casting metod, but now I realy understand I have to turn through more to avoid duffing and topping
This is a great lesson on the value of hip turn, weight transfer, rotation, etc and how you can get your hands (and handle) in front of the ball even if you cast. The problem for me though is that you are not actually casting in your demonstrations. In your slo-mo swing at around 7:30 in, you have a tremendous amount of lag at last parallel and show no sign whatsoever of dumping the club prior to that. I would like to see all the things you are advocating demonstrated by someone who is also throwing the club (and angles) away right at the start of the downswing. I can do the things you are talking about, but I still throw the club away early and lose speed and have flippy contact. It is like you saying that if you do the things you talk about, that you can't or wont cast anymore. Not sure that is true. If a person is prone to dumping the club at the beginning of the downswing it could be very hard to get out of that just by doing other things correctly.
I’ve been taking lessons for years and cannot stop casting and flipping. I’ve lowered my hndcp to single digits but this one position is keeping me from getting better. I hit balls 3-4 times a week practicing on my simulator. I’ll give this a shot tomorrow and see what changes I can make
Hi steve, I have a question....it’s not related to this video per say but I didn’t wanna search through my history to find the right video..... When you’re flexible enough (as I am very flexible) to activate that shoulder blade bend at the top of the swing....is it ok to be slightly across the line due to that? Thanks
Nice one - thanks Steve, great video. Do you have any advice for keeping the club face square at impact, I've felt myself pushing some shots right with the above swing thoughts. But cleaner hits for sure!
So, we are really hitting off the right hip but the pivot, turn, and tilt has transported the club far enough left that the wrap around the pole with the 7 intact provides the proper release and good impact conditions.
Thank you once again. I finally understand why I always casting shoulder , flip hands , and early extend. Not too difficult to comprehend now and do the right method.
Thank you for this video Steve, makes sense. Question on what muscles are you using to unwind the torso at speed? I remember in an Austin video that he said that he did not use his shoulders to power the golf swing.
Awesome new tip and can't wait to use this concept. Just think of the number 7 throughout. My question is then is it okay to have your shoulders lined up left of the target line at impact? Many instructors emphasize shoulders lined up near the target line at impact. I believe it's more powerful if already opened at impact.
Hey Steve I love your video’s, great teacher you are bud..I started following you last year and my game improved So much and I’m hitting the ball very well and finally center face..lol..playing about 10 hdcp and trying to get into single digits. Quick question? I use the 123 drill right handed, but having a little issue with the full swing timing..do I post up first then start the release From there or start both at the same time? Cheers and Thank you, Chris
As someone who habitually gets under the plane and stuck this seems like it would lead to open faces and visits to the right OB marker. But I figured out that the answer wasn’t less body rotation, but more of it. If the clubhead path is roughly circular then I need to aim that circular path with the bent spoke (lead arm) that it travels on so that when I cease leading it and transfer all the energy down to the clubhead that the path and head spit out towards my target. This can only be done by more turn and not less. How to get there? I was just lifting my trail heel off the ground and releasing from the top by spinning my Palm about the trail forearm. Not enough. I had to start releasing the trail heel so that it pivoted toward the target line. Voila. Release as hard as you want with a square face. Austin demonstrated that a lot in his skeleton suit with the club looking like it was impossibly far behind. Granted, that wasn’t at speed, but the intent showed in his slow body work. He knew what he was doing.
I find when I rotate my upper torso early like this to get lag through impact, I end up getting my arms to far out thus getting a big out to in swing path. What should I drill to stop this? Cheers from Australia.
Great , as always, question Steve: If I think figure 7 with the driver, what position do I take the end of the club to, given that ball position is way in front with the big stick?
Steve, how far back from your left heel is the ball positioned? Also, during the rotation forward, is your head still throughout the entire rotation? How to ensure that while practicing this drill we don't inadvertently swing outside-in? It would be very helpful if you could wear a GoPro on your hat so that we could see what this looks like from your POV.
This maybe your best video yet. Your explanation of getting the left arm in front of the ball was an eye opener. Is it in front for the driver as well? And the pivot itself, I'm finding it has to be done fairly quickly, correct? You alluded to something like this in either a video or newsletter that the pivot must happen fast because in Austin swing there's no time to waste.
Good question, how far would the butt of the club move on the driver downswing pivot/torso turn before the hands begin the flapping move? At the ball, or how many inches before the ball?
@@luisjuarez1200 The same move on a driver would not get the handle out in front because of the massively forward ball position! But Kevin, the pivot has to have some speed to get gravity to affect the arms and pull on them...like spinning around with your arms at your sides.
Steve, is it ok to generate the turn using the right side rather than left side? Reason I ask is I have an old injury and find it hard to continue the turn through impact with my left hip, but if the right knee/hip take charge, it’s easier to let the left clear without exerting too much pressure on it?
Steve, Quick Question. I really like the feeling of the throw release, and I’m seeing results on the range. However, when I take it to the course, everything is pulling left. Is that just needing more turn? Also, I would like to see a future video talking about the most common mistakes your students do when trying to learn his technique. Just a thought!
Good idea Jay...I will add that to the queue. Pulling left could be a number of things. Is it curving to the left as well? Are you heeling it left? Are your divots behind or ahead?
It’s a straight pull left. No divot. I’m sure I’m not turning through sufficiently. I find that when I think about hand action or arms, that thought takes priority over rotation.
@@jayschwarz4365 Not Steve, obviously, but check where you're throwing the club because you could be getting steep. If 9 o'clock is away from the target and 12 o'clock is directly behind you, the clubhead should (in isolation) move toward 1030/1100
Steve is there a problem with the torso out running the arms resulting in weak shots going to the right? (Rt.handed golfers). If so how, How would you correct?
I promise you the 14 people that thumbs down this video blocks their shot to the right or flips and push hooks the ball. You can't cast if you turn, you can not cast faster then you can turn. Remember as long as you turn and use your forearms correct you can't release the club early enough. Once you stop fighting this you will play the best golf and hit it longer easier than you ever had. Stop listening to t.v. announcers and pay attention to people who know what they are talking about. This is a great way to hit the golf ball, it isn't the only way to hit the golf ball but it is a very efficient way to hit the golf ball.
I tried this today and got much more distance but had trouble keeping my head behind the ball. That led to topping the ball. I’m not sure how my first move from the top should be initiated by, push off back foot or a lean toward the target.
@@Inmotion70 I tried this today and it worked. Even the sound on the ball strike got better. Began with my left foot back until I fet the shift onto my front foot then got in a normal stance. Pivot is in front of the ball now. You didn’t even see my swing and helped me. Club doesn’t pass my hands at impact either. Thank you. I’m a fan forever.
Can you turn too much? I have been told to start the downswing by dropping my arms before turning. To be fair I think I hit the ball better by doing this. I am a little confused because my swing path can be anything from 4 - 12 deg right ( I am right handed) and tend to push draw (or hook) the ball and often hit it fat. Perversely, when I try and turn earlier, my strike tends to worsen.
Hi John. While 4 degrees is manageable out to 300 yards or so, 12 is a total disaster for anyone who drives more than 180. Fat shots often start at 8 degrees right, and no divots start at 6 imo. Your drop move before turning will keep you on a plateau forever though. To fix this you would use the 'lift the chair' drill and the shaft/headcover next to your left elbow at address to swing low left. This will straighten out your path nearly immediately. However, changing the face/path ratio will take longer. You would have to flap the hands through while keeping the face skywards longer.
Im a7 handicap but was told i cast. I have great shots and hit it further than most however my consistency is not what it should be. Im all arms in my swing. Going to try this hopefully help lower my scores with some practice. Do you do evaluations via email with videos etc?
That isn’t actually what Jack said. It’s one of the most misrepresented quotes in golf instruction. His release has nothing to do with involving the wrists early. It was about redirecting the momentum in the clubhead.
And yet it's exactly what he did. Because you could never catch the clubhead up unless you start from the top. This is proven now over and over...no more debate.
Steve, can this be a different way of explaining how you are wrapping the swing around the pole or is this a different concept/way to swing the club all together from the Austin approach? ruclips.net/video/fniAGqLKbr0/видео.html
This is the crux of the Austin teaching. This is his story about the mud bank, and burying the club in it without muddying the sleeve. The body is simply positioned to support this action.
Did you measure the effect? There is no effect as the swing works like a trebuchet. You can not increase the club. Anyhow for me it does not work. Of course you must release and not hold.
The swing working like a trebuchet is as silly as saying the clubhead moves in a circle. Or drawing a stick figure and saying it's the Mona Lisa. Extremely crude representation.
Holy cow. Not only does this address casting problems, but it ties together all of the fundamentals of a sound golf swing. Well done, Steve. This is one of your better videos.

James Briggs Golf This really doesn’t make sense, are you sure you can read the time?
Steve is there a problem with the torso out running the arms resulting in weak shots going to the right? (Rt.handed golfers). If so how, How would you correct?
Hmmm...shots going weak right can be caused by many things. I would need more information.
Cheers Mitch!
I tried this today and got much more distance but had trouble keeping my head behind the ball. That led to topping the ball. I’m not sure how my first move from the top should be initiated by, push off back foot or a lean toward the target.
Step down on the front foot and rotate.
Sorry I meant divot.
so is it a drive to "the post" then a turning of the hips??
They occur simultaneously.
@@Inmotion70 Will check out the drills. Appreciate the reply.
Im a7 handicap but was told i cast. I have great shots and hit it further than most however my consistency is not what it should be. Im all arms in my swing. Going to try this hopefully help lower my scores with some practice. Do you do evaluations via email with videos etc?
Absolutely. Go to www.hititlonger.com and click on the 'swing analysis' tab.
Where is that range?
I like this channel!
I’ve tried to order a training aid on your site to no avail.
Which one? What happens?
Awesome ,,,ty
Cheers Kevin!
Fantastico !...
You can definitely cast if your torso and lower body get too far out in front too fast.
Steve, don’t you have to worry about getting the shoulders too open and coming over the top?
No because my right shoulder is under.
How many degrees open is your body at impact?
Should be very close to 45 degrees.
I watch these vids, he says doesn’t matter when cast.. hold my beer
Steve Pratt Golf here is another concept that I thought felt like your wrap around the pole drill.
Steve Pratt Golf ruclips.net/video/sbGeG2_eA-k/видео.html
Mainly feels like wrap around the pole because when you push the club head away outward force feels sort of the same.
Steve Pratt Golf the torso turn drill helped out a lot today along with sending out the outward force.
My back then faces the outfield fence or the camera behind me. Now I can really throw that baseball or golf ball around my left lag post.
Just like you were skipping a rock.
