I had the pleasure of training with one of the otsukas when he came to my karate school a few years ago i don't remember if this is the same but i remember it being a interesting and very informational class

I remember my Sensei saying after each move or combination to take a 3 second pause. And I remember he told me at the begging to go slowly up with my hands and go slowly down and he told me to not go slowly on the Makeris and to go fast.

As someone who has practiced Shotokan for over 50 years, I found this information extremely interesting & informative. This because of the demonstrations as well as the very good English explanations. Actually this follows on quite nicely from the video with Naka Sensei visiting this same dojo. Wado has so many wonderful ideas & principles. I hope that maybe one day, when I visit Tokyo, I will be able to practice at the Wado dojo. That would be great!

I am guessing by the blinky bill reference you are also australian, I live in perth and have looked up wado ryu places and there seems to be a number in WA, I suggest you look it up, you may have places you can go to in your state.

Great explanations of Kushanku bunkai. I am surprised that Sensei Otsuka speaks that well in English. I know that he speaks French, but did not know that he spoke English. KUDOS!!

I understand. But the statement is a bit strange. It's the third generation of the Otsuka family to assume the position of soke.

Have someone grab you by the collar of your Gi. Relax and flow into the first sequence. It’s actually a trap and lock. While your opponent is locked in the first sequence, proceed with the second sequence….it’s actually a redirect and throw. Have someone grab you as hard as they can, relax and do it.

Not my place to give Sensei Otshuka advice but since Wado Ryu is mainly Jujitsu, I think he may introduce some practical grappling moves such as judo throws, some submissions ect as into Wado Ryu system. I read somewhere that Sensei has a judo background. Actually there is a video of him teaching some ground grappling and things he showed there are very solid according to my BJJ practitioner friend. That would even give Wado Ryu yet another characteristic IMO

I agree empathicly with some aggressive kung fu integrated. Basic training is a lifetime but movement meets function.

The beginning sequence is a grapple and throw. People practice this form as strikes and blocks, but once you emerge yourself in it….a world of grapple will open up
