In this video we are going to install and review the Donkey Kong Remix Arcade mod by John Kowalski. Donkey Kong Remix was originally developed for the Tandy Color Computer 3 (CoCo 3) and was eventually ported to the arcade after encouragement by the donkeykongforum... community.
In this video we will show how to remove the Z80 CPU and install the Donkey Kong Remix Daughter Board. How to add the D2K (Donkey Kong 2) daughter board to the DK remix PCB. Gameplay review of DK Remix and Donkey Kong Deranged. How to cycle through menus and games with D2K and Donkey Kong Remixed. I'll also show a little bit of D2K gameplay.
This board also adds high score save, freeplay with attract, and many new game modes! SUPER COOL!

A boring Friday night in Australia.
I needed this video.
Perfect timing.
Thanks John.
Thanks for the review, and the shout-out to Donkey Kong Forum! Remix was a long time coming, and we all really appreciate John's work, and especially that he incorporated so many of our suggestions and tweaks when we were play-testing it on the forum. Anybody who wants to breathe new life into their DK cab should strongly consider getting a hold of this game! It's well worth the money, and it won't be in MAME for the foreseeable future.
+DonkeyBlog Yeah, it's sweet for sure! Thanks!
P.S. - Robbie Lakeman was at the show and it looks like he got over 200k on the Re-mix machine. My high score only lasted for 1 day at Zapcon. Not too shabby though.
Johns Arcade does it again..............Great Video!!...........Quote of the video "Thats a long ass Ladder."
Thanks, Keep em Coming.
+cas bomme It was indeed a long ass ladder.
That barrel at 23:07 So official!..It's really awesome and amazing seeing new life restored to what seemed like was becoming a dying interest just a few years ago. Btw Thanks for adding us in your Circle a while back John, it really means a lot considering you're like a legend to us when it comes to arcade. Also if you get a chance to check out our show starting at Episode 5 we have a fun project that is also kind of restoring new life to old video games and the arcade interest. If you find the time, we'd really appreciate knowing what you thought about it. Peace man, also as usual great video =)
+Nardz Thanks, bro! I'll check it out!
Between fixing the audio and installing the mods, I think the inside of your Donkey Kong is the cabinet I've become most intimate with that wasn't part of a restore project. I love these vids showing all the neat hardware mods and homebrew versions. I especially love all those who put in the time to make freeplay mods with attract modes. I also love every time I see that long flat-head transparent yellow screwdriver as that is EXACTLY the screwdriver I used to remove ICs during my youth tinkering in electronics and always though I was the only one who ever did it that way.
that's funny. that screwdriver just works. my Dad gave me that when he was clearing out his junk. something about it makes it perfect for this task.
+John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech Mine came from ironically enough as a prize from a showbiz pizza after one good birthday of skiiball. Came as a set of four in a blue vinyl bag with a clear front. I really short flat head with a thick handle, and average sized phillips, a really small and skinny phillips, and that long flat head. It didn't take me long to find out the long flat head really did work great for getting under and popping out ICs and CPUs from sockets without bending the legs to scratching the board beneath. It still amazes me the first video I saw where you brought it out to pop the ICs from the red tent and I was like OMG, he does it the way I used to and with the same exact screw driver. That's when I knew this was a channel like no other.
Mihoshi Productions Lol! Amazing. Such a great screwdriver. I LOSE MY MIND when I can't find it too. I cherish it. :)
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech
LOL, I've no doubts there as often as you have to pop PROMs and CPUs I could just imagine you turning the basement and garage upside down trying to find it as I haven't found another screwdriver or even rom puller yet that does as good of a job.
Hey John. Highscoresaves.com is our partner in the US. :) We would really get in touch with John Kowalski to talk about putting his versions on our kit, too.
Stefan Kimmlingen You can contact John Kowalski at donkeykongremix@gmail.com
No prob.
Oh wow I seriously seriously would like to play these mods of donkey Kong so cool and looks like so so much fun
Damm this has to be the coolest version of DK yet!!!
Adam should combine all those boards into one board!
These versions are crazy cool & look hard!!!
you should hold a weekend tournament at that arcade raise funds to fix that game . take Adam and that other smart dude . fix that game live over the weekend . just an idea.
Beautiful this kit, DK is immortal!!!
Serenity Now John, Serenity Now! 37:53
I think you would have had that Remix Rivet Level 75m on the next run. You were close to unlocking the 'pattern'.
dude, you got me wanting a DK, and I have always kinda sucked at that game.
That Donkey Kong remix looks ace. I`ve just down loaded a game boy emulator for my smart phone and Donkey Kong world Rom the first 4 levels are the same as the original game.
Including the Galaxian 3 at Fun World, i'm aware of 5 in the world. Bruno on DLF owns one. Friend in UK has i think all parts but not assembled and i've seen one in Australia at least. The other i just saw on Google from about a year ago.
Remix looks fun. Can't wait to see more videos of it
Deranged never stops increasing in difficulty whereas the original stops increasing on either L06 or L04 (but don't quote me on the exact level)
Great episode John! I am thinking I need to try this upgrade for my DK!!
If they could get this board to stack and work with the Network save board, it would be like some Donkey Kong version of Voltron (or Devastator if you're a Transformers fan).
Someone should make a board that allows you to plug in multiple score save units. It's not that complicated it's just a riser board with extra slots and some sort of on/off functionality that allows (via dip switch) to select one of the units you want to use.
Heck, someone really experienced could make one that worked via chip and it would add the choice functionality to the game itself like an extra setting perhaps???
I know it's possible, i have a riser board on one of my old IBMs it allows me to have two graphics cards on the same plug so i don't have to remove it, merely switch in between. The thing is very simple, just traces and switches.
Damn that's cool man, always nice to see a new version of a classic.
Great video! I enjoy Donkey Kong. Remix looks like a lot of fun! Thanks, John.
Dk rule John keep making dope videos happy belated 420 LOL
+da Joker Thanks, bro!
With this arcade update now you can do the real donkeykong.
I'm curious as to if you could run the deranged/remixed/d2k board setup, along with an arcade switcher and second dk junior board... cramming all these games into one cab? I currently have a dk junior cab running a jr board, and am wondering which way to go with future boards.Love the channel, thanks for all you do for the hobby!
I have that same Pac-Man ghost light at 5:24 John!
JOHN'S THE MAN!
At pinball pa they have a dedicated cab for this
what a way to start my friday with another great video!!! Donkey kong is great!!! thanks john for the video. Any road trips on the horizon for you?
JJ, I got Jochen's upload kit for my Moon Cresta. There was a Rom issue due to my board being different to his. He sent me a revised file which I reprogramed the eeprom with. I reckon he could send you the file easy for Junior.
yeah, I should ask so I can still use it.
Great vid John
Can you still control the barrels on Dk remix ? & that monitor shroud is that original I thought they were made from card ?
Awesome Video. I definitely want to try these versions of Donkey Kong. lol 5 dislike some people have no lives.
Do they have any plans on adding these to the arcade SD? Was planning a build around one, as until now that seemed to be the only way to get all the previous versions including Pauline edition easily in one cab. Thanks love the videos as always.
Hey john did you know that there is Halloween and christmis edition (version) of donkey kong remix ?
Woah this dudes had way too much caffeine :-)) Great video though
Have you found a way to add the Pauline edition to this amazing collection? Thank you for your videos!!
if you jump on the spring mario actually jumps up to the 5th girder but dies instantly
really enjoy your vids john, excellent watch!
MOAR !!!
DK rocks
Oh neat. My capcom machine has that same shape. ^_^ Mine is blue though.
you have a c0mputer space arcade game?
+dusty pedrosi yes. :)
+dusty pedrosi he caresses all it beautiful carves every night before bed :)
+dusty pedrosi It's very "dusty" too :)
So we can install the brasington d2k board onto the remix board?
john, do i recall you had a new id plate made up on one of your nintendo machines? my donkey kong, which is actually a space firebird factory conversion, is missing the back door and hence the id/serial number plate. i do have the number however, on a sticker by the monitor. My cabinet is a japanese one. Anyway, did you have one made or was i dreaming?
+Joe Bristow no. I don't think so. I have original plates. Not sure if anyone makes repros.
So much win!
Is that DK side art from Mike's Arcade?
+Chuck12 - I don't recall but I think so.
John is that a original DK
yes
can i join the video game outsiders podcast next Tuesday, because i had a chat problem the other day.
btw sorry about the last podcast you guys did last Tuesday. tell Matt i said hi.
Cool stuff!
what ever happened to that galaxian 3?
Can you get this on retroPi?
no. right now it only works on original hardware.
I want to know how I can buy something like that
is this available for MAME
+Rich Dziuba no. And not anytime soon.
can they be put on a nes cartige
hey are you going to do a follow up on your pole potion 2 and keep up the dirty lol
+mrouse79565 Yeah, for sure! I am gonna bulletproof that thing! :D
And put pole 2 by pole 1
mrouse79565 I'm struggling with that! #NOROOM
I noticed you mentioned that the barrels on the original Donkey Kong disappear below you if you are on the higher levels. I was wondering if I was going insane because I have been playing it on my MAME cabinet and I kept noticing that. I want to practice up for when I get my dedicated Donkey Kong going which needs a monitor right now. I bought it from a friend at a really cheap price who didn't want to restore it and it has an original Donkey Kong board in it with the high score save kit like you have. I have yet to see it on a display yet, but it plays blind just fine. Unfortunately someone hacked up the original harness and have made it compatible with JAMMA. That is cool because I can put some other boards in there if I want to, but I really wish they would have left the original wiring intact. At least the cabinet is basically all original.
yea i could not help noticing that you have SFA2? what gives john you've been holding out on us lol..
+junbug doe Ha! I did a video of it ever. :)
Hi gamers
is that a street fighterA2
+dusty pedrosi YES.
Why is every retro arcade person named John?
Hold the phone... You have Street Fighter A2?
+Bob Marley yes. :)
John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech Wow, awesome man! That game came out when I was 15. Right at the very end of the arcade era. Its great to see a 90's game in there : ) : ) : )
sorry, john. doesnt count as a tech video without soldering. #boardsonboardsonboards
Hey John are you on Playstation Network? (PS3 or PS4 ,Whats your username?) Thanks!
+Tymoda TV yes. But I don't use it anymore. Blkdog7 PC and Xbox one mostly
