    Mario Bros. Wide Body is my favorite arcade cab. I love the art, I love the texture of the CP and Bezel, I love the controls, I love the wideness, I love the overall presentation. It is like a deluxe Nintendo cab. It is special and if I ever see one for sale around here in my tiny town I will probably try to get it.

    Great info. I just purchased my first arcade game, an original Double Dragon 1987 with a 621 conversion. The main reason I was able to buy was my wife said as long as it has Mario and Super Mario and Tetris on it. Thank goodness the Elf 621 did😄👍🏼. In my 40s and I'm loving playing the games I grew up with and showing my 2 boys under 10 the 8-bit awesomeness 👍🏼 Thank you for teaching and keeping this part of our childhood alive. Coin Up !!!!

    You mentioned the 100 volt plug. Standard electrical outlets in Japan only run on 100 volts AC. So rather than redesign the components for US voltage when selling the cabinets to the American market, they added a step-down transformer that converts the 120 volts to 100 volts. Cabinets sold to the UK and Europe would have a 240/100 step-down transformer.

    Very cool cabinet John. I got a widebody Mario Bros on eBay a few years ago and painted it. Had a new cap kit installed before I bought it. She looks a little rough still, but plays great. I've gotten out of the arcade gaming hobby since then, but it's still a fun machine. I need to finish restoring it but that will have to wait, I have a tractor that I am rebuilding now. Two completely different hobbies, eh?

    I have a Mario Bros. cabinet but I custom ordered a control panel plate where the Mario side is red instead of blue. I never figured out how to set it to Free Play so I just use the classic quarter on a fishing line trick.

    I couldn't help but mention in Japan there's a quite obscure version of Super Mario Bros. known as Super Mario Bros. Special, and it has five enemies from both Donkey Kong and Mario Bros., a nice shoutout to Mario's earlier titles.

    Okay Hear Me Out Mario Bros Game & Watch Was Released On March 14, 1983
    Mario Bros Arcade Was Released On July 14 1983 This Means Luigi's First Appearance Was The Game & Watch Port One Month Before The Arcade's Release So Technically Luigi's Second Appearance Is Basically Mario Bros For The Arcade

    The coin counter is suppose to work with the coin switch. Free play or not, the switch triggures the counter. Its lower than it should be because how long it hasnt worked is unknown.

    Wonderful review my friend! This has always been one of my favorite classic arcade games (always wanted to get the dedicated one to go with my pins). When I was a kid, this was the ONLY game I could compete on at Putt Putt Golf 'n Games. I won the game-of-the week once with the highest score. Large pizza and 30 tokens, bazing! Lol. Thanks for the vids.

  • @alby13

    funny you mention firsts, this game introduces the POW block which was a huge deal in Super Mario Bros. 2 on the NES in the US. works the same way, flipping enemies over.

  • @whompmaster
    @whompmaster 10 лет назад +3

    Wonderful video John! Very good point about this being the very first game to introduce Luigi, the green pipes and the turtles. It's a very important part of Mario's history and where it started. I guess they decided not to use the Crabs or Fly's very much after this game or did they?
    Your difficulty is set to EASY instead of the standard MEDIUM but for a game this hard I can certainly understand why. The differences are when the green fireballs start and later when the red fireballs start.
    With some good practice you can certainly beat the top score of 300K on your first man.

    • @Johnsarcade
      @Johnsarcade  10 лет назад +1

      Wait a second... are you sure?? I should have my game set to the standard TG settings! You think it's set easy!?!

    • @whompmaster
      @whompmaster 10 лет назад

      John's Arcade Game Reviews & Tech Yep, I'm sure. You even mention it on phase 7 ("I'm surprised I haven't had a fireball come out to get me.") at exactly the same time I look at it to see which difficulty the game is set at. Check your dips to see what they are set for. MEDIUM should be all dips off and the last one on. However, I have seen broken dips giving out the wrong difficulty just recently. For example, EASY really being HARD and vice versa. In that case you will have to test them all to figure out what's what.

      Whomp it’s interesting to note that crabs (and hammers from Donkey Kong) were featured in Hudson Soft’s “Super Mario Bros. Special”, released in 1986 for various Japanese PC’s. Hudson has earlier done ports and special versions of Nintendo games for Japanese PC’s, including Mario Bros. Special and Punch Ball Mario Bros.

    It should be known that the melody that sounds like Petula Clark's "Downtown" was only used for the console ports of this game, not the arcade version seen here.

Things are moving at there fastest then. FUN game, I agree even more FUN with 2 people!!!! THX for review!!! As always Long Live Arcades!!!

    I noticed there's a difference in monitor angles for the Mario Bros vs Donkey Kong cabs. Is this true for narrow body as well as wide body versions? Working on a Mario Bros narrow body restore myself.

    • @Johnsarcade

      Yeah, the DK style cabinets have the monitor at a greater angle away from your. The wide body has the monitor more at 90 degrees

    In this age of downloadables at a budget, I think Nintendo should come back and made a very updated version to this fantastic classic. Plenty of new enemies. Stage bosses. New board designs. But, keep the two player VS idea and non-moving screen in tact. I know they once did it for the Virtual Boy. But, they need to try again for the WiiU...or at least the 3DS with wireless connectivity.

    Not that i'd ever do this but, what keeps someone from taking the book "project arcade" and the design in it modifying it for the dimensions and making a dedicated arcade cabinet from that? The speaker grill in the middle wouldn't be exactly the worlds best give away at that point. I'm assuming you'd want some kind of secondary method, other key signs to look for to help be sure it is. I mean if your really THAT specific just curious

    I still think if you and your friend made some videos playing doubles on MB's that people would love to see it. You don't have to go for the WR or anything. Just put a score on the scoreboard. You can submit a double score with POW and another score for NO POW doubles. For NO POW doubles you are just trying to beat 118K to be in 5th place. It's a doable goal.

    My DKJ marquee light fixture was missing so I purchased a new 16" flouresent light fixture from the home depot, cut off the plug and connected it to the existing wires hanging behind the marquee. It works fine now but is a 120 volt fixture running off a 100 volts. Can this damage the original transformer or power supply? You've got me worried now. I hate when one of my games marquees aren't lit.
