    John, I was born in '67 and spent many a Friday and Saturday night in arcades. However, before I was old enough to drive, Donkey Kong came out when I was around 13-14 years old. That summer, I spent many hours at a waterpark where they had Donkey Kong in their snack bar. Like you, that was the one game that captured me and I consider to be my favorite to this day. I didn't think owning a Donkey Kong arcade cabinet was really even feasibly possible until viewing your channel. I can't afford over $2K for a pristine cabinet, but I think you have given me the confidence to shoot for a dead game and try to restore it. I just need help in how to locate one... I live in South Louisiana and there doesn't seem to be anywhere to look around here. Hurricane Katrina flooded out a lot of establishments in the area. I remember passing an AMA distributors after the hurricane and they had every one of their games out on the curb waiting to be hauled-off to the dump because they were all water-logged and a complete loss. They also had security guards there to prevent people from salvaging parts. Could you possibly point me in the right direction as to where to look other than Craigslist, which has been a dead end in my vicinity?

    I can't believe this video is ten years old now! I remember seeing this video about a year later in spring of 2013. I was 11 years old and oddly starring to get appealed to these retro games. And because of this video, I was able to understand the game of donkey kong and the insides just enough so then 6 years later in 2019, when I was 17, after working a part time job in high school, I was able to find a Donkey Kong for a pretty good price and was able to do some adjustments to it thanks to this video and Thanks to you John!

    Thank you sooo much for the help with the first Level 3. Avoiding the first hammer helps so much with the pattern. Also the jump on the third portion of the Level 3 from the elevator to avoid the second fire is a chef's kiss. For context I just needed 30,000 points for an achievement in the Donkey Kong 64 version of this classic.

    We used a technique called "penny flicking" to get free games back in the early 80's. One of probably THOUSANDS of methods kids used to use to get free plays back then. Thanks for the review and especially for saving and restoring so many classic arcade cabinets.

    Another little tip. Forget your bonus on the barrel stages. Stay at the top and jump as the 100 points you get for each barrel will score you higher than the time bonus. :)

    EPIC classic arcade game and it's WICKED hard too. No doubt, gaming was at it's best during the arcade era. The fun factor was off the scale with so many classic games and Donkey Kong was one of the best for sure. Thanks for another great review and gameplay video, good stuff!

    Great video John.
    I'd love an original DK but I live in New Zealand and they are very hard to find. In your opinion, is the DK version on the 60 in 1 jamma boards close to the original game? Also, have you ever head of a game called "Karate Chop". A guy nearby is selling a cabinet with that name on the marque (apparently the game was working until the monitor broke recently).

    To be fair Radarscope didn't 'suck' it just blended in with all the Space Invaders clones in the US. In Japan, Radarscope was the most popular game behind Space Invaders. Donkey Kong was created specifically to appeal to US audiences

    Something to remember when you're doing the math on how much money a game made the operator: if this unit was on a location not owned by the operator, the operator paid the location owner a percentage of the take - most of my locations were 50%...

    Also, Mario was named after Mario Segale who was Nintendo of America's landlord back in '81. The story goes that the boys from the Land of the Rising Sun were behind on their rent and so had to negotiate with Mario to let them stay and make their fortune (with DK). Mario was understanding of their ambition and so they immortalised his name in the character known so well today.

    I never knew you had to push to the right to jump DK's foot, that explains why I could never get that to work. I still suck at this game though and only have gotten to level 4 a couple of times, while usually dying on the second springboard level.

    I guess it will always remain a tiny mystery, if this outhouse arcade's owner had to pay the taxes for any phantom coins in that DK machine or not, since the counter is what they are suppose to list on tax forms.
    I have never known pretty much all of these scoring tricks or ways of manipulating the barrels. Now, I am so tempted to go down to this local pizza place and give it a try on their multi-cade.

    i thought the story was that b/c they didn't have a lot of memory to create a detailed character, they made a charcter with a hat and mustache so that most of his head was covered, and then gave him overalls, which also made his body less detailed. anyway, when they were done creating this character, he had the appearance of an italian guy, so i thought the name "mario" had something to do with that. i wonder how "pauline" became "princess peach."

  • @MagikGimp
    @MagikGimp 12 лет назад

    Great run and loved the childhood story that helped you get there!
    I'm always amazed by how empty cabs are. All made of wood and air, they look so slap-dash but then I guess most electronics were like that back in the day. They are deceiving in that they were built to last, as proved by your basement; I expect a lot of modern electronics won't have such a long life-span.

    I know its an old vid but someone may answer. Was it different in the UK I remember in the 80's, me and a mate battling for the highest score. The UK I remember the ones we played in our town, 1st level had no ape at the top. just the barrels appearing. There were 4 levels and if you got through that it started again. at 1st level. I was the 1st in our local to find out after 12 rotations x 4, the game switched off and went to the score page to put your score in. Which BTW, I had an high score of over 400,000. My mate was the next to complete 12 rotations score over 400,000. we became that good we used complete the 12 rotations every time so, to get even higher scores, besides usual scoring we had to pick up every hammer. and smash everything insight, My record highest score was 465000. Are memories
