My word - your 59 GMC plays sweet music! Pure music to the ears! Beautiful looking truck, as well. Great driver who knows how to shift and clutch. Thank you for sharing your pride and joy.
This driver is great!!I I've been there done that in a 1972 International 238 DD 13sp for 10 years, beautiful sound!! Thanks. I started driving in 1978 and still driving.
I would absolutely love to see cold starts of the trucks you feature - especially this one - with this view. It would be amazing to watch the drivers start up their rigs bone cold with this view so we could see what they do to get them started on cold days
I left DD Redford plant in 1988 and this engine brings back so many memories. A trip to engine test with so many screaming engines on their breakin run was the only thing better than this video!
2nd job was a 67' short nose GMC conv. with a 5 speed / with a hi-lo button. I love most of these new guys only know a 10 speed & not even by their real name a road ranger.
Does this 6-71 have a 2 valve or 4 valve head on it? When did Detroit introduce the 4-valve head(s) in the in-line and v-engines? Sounds great and thanks for posting. Wish you showed the exterior of the truck though.
I cut my teeth on a 1967 "Commer" (later Dodge) Delivery Van here in the UK at the age of 18 (1973). Had to learn Double De-Clutching, very noisy, smelly and slow!!. The oldest vehicle i have driven is an 1936 British "Guy" Bus. Great Videos, Love american Trucks and suprising how modern Trucking was in the mid 1950s in the USA compared to the UK.
I got me one a them 6/71's in a 1960 GMC 860. Single axle tractor, 5&2. Truck looks like a mix btwn. early fifties C ball and a late fifties pick up. Crazy combo. Gonna stretch her and go 18' flatbed. I am farmer and I will do it, yesser! Thank you.
+rileydog362 Will do Tom. Will send pics sometime. Thanks for writing. In the meantime if you find my page on facebook, you will see my yellow colored 860. Search me at Joe Daly, Michigan, or Martin Daly, Michigan. I forget which. I like my old truck. Very loud. Very smokey. Very oily. It is sooo cool. See ya bud. J.
+kblackav8or If I had the time but I will try when I change the rear suspension to air ride , kinda beats you up now but the air ride seats have helped. When you putting your KW up on here ?
+rileydog362 I did kind of a lame one last year. I need to get it cleaned up. With house for sale, truck in storage not nearby, not very easy at the moment. I did get some great jake echo on video over the weekend going through the tunnels in Seattle. I think I may have frightened some folks ;)
Trust me if you run on dirt roads as in the oilfield and your head is that close to the top of the cab when you hit a rough spot the button on the top of your ball cap is going to hurt Been there done that
Great fun to watch and reminisce, but no one would want to return to the technology of that time to drive for 9,10 or 11 hours per day. They had no A/C,weak heaters if any at all,no air ride suspension,no air ride seat. These vehicles would wear their drivers out pretty quickly. They are a lot of fun to see in operation, however, just to see what driving them was like back then. Those old engines have a great exhaust sound, though!
That is one sound I DO NOT miss! It's one of the main reasons I now wear hearing aids. lol Cut my teeth on a screaming 671 'Jimmy' with a pair of mixing sticks. Hauling 90,000 lbs gross Winter weights. Took you 10 miles to get her up to 55 MPH only to have some dumb farmer pull out in front of you. No, don't miss it.
Heh, heh, thanks for that, I'm sorry, but I just couldn't pass up the opportunity for a good old fashioned "ragging"! And the old farm house I live in has oak frame & rafters, so I know how durable...and hard to drill!...good seasoned oak is...!
Sure is. I tried to find a way to send you a message but could not find a link. If you see me driving around or see me at a truck show come and let me know .
God those Detroit's were noisy, many a deaf Detroit driver I should imagine, and why put the range change lever so far down the stick, nice truck though
Pete Sadler look at his hand position most of the time. seems it’s set to just hit his pinkie when it’s in high range. personal preference and comfort is guess
Hey Rain Coast don"t be calling us dumb farmers with your mouth full were you thing your food comes from ? Most farmers can drive a truck far better than the average person.

Thank you for watching !
no need for a radio with a symphony like that
Drove an 8v71 in a fire truck, was taught to float the gears. I only clutched on start and stop. Great memories in the rig !
Love the ride
Thanks for taking me along
She sounds beautiful
Nice music to my ears
Nice shifting too !!
Nothing sounds better than an old Detroit diesel! Great video!
Detroit diesels have their own unique sound and I love it!
This driver is great!!I I've been there done that in a 1972 International 238 DD 13sp for 10 years, beautiful sound!! Thanks. I started driving in 1978 and still driving.
Love the telltale burps in the throttle when the bumps send ur ass off the seat!
Sweet old rig sir. 👍🏼

Awesome video; remains me of my father's truck back in the day. Thank you sharing this.
Cowboy caddiliac. Sweet ride bud love it would love it to pull horses around. Thanks for sharing I like old trucks
In Australia, we had many of these, great experience!!!!
Chulada de máquina ese rugir y el freno de motor es oro molido no hay nada más perron que conducir un camión
That's what you call a real truck sweet sweet
Love that sound of the old Detroit. Sadly there aren't any GMC Cannonball trucks in the St. Louis area or in the state of Missouri.
music to my ears
My dad drove a 59 GMC conv. for Mobilgas aka SOCONY-VACUMM /Mobil back in the day same cab motor, just a snub nose what they called them back then.
YES! Cab looks great too!
Very nice truck sir...Gotta love those 2 cycles love the sound...
Yes i did my first driving job i had a 1960 model.5 speed overdrive and a 2 speed rear end.
2nd job was a 67' short nose GMC conv. with a 5 speed / with a hi-lo button. I love most of these new guys only know a 10 speed & not even by their real name a road ranger.
my god! That engine sounds amazing!

such a shame that not many people can drive like this anymore. love the truck
Beautiful truck. Looks like San Luis Obispo County in Ca.

+joe daly Thanks for looking and send a pic of your truck if you can. Take care, Tom

Damn that thing is bouncy.
All i can say is nice, nice, nice!!!!
She's sounding good Tom. Sure hope to see it at Salem in May 2016

+kblackav8or I hope to see it soon ! Tom
Could you imagine driving one of these back in the day before air ride seats? 😳
And no power steering , air conditioning and a rough spring suspension . Truckers of old had a hard job and did it with dignity.
rileydog362 makes me feel like a bitch. Hell, I'm certain I am.
Air ride???? Bostrom ratchet seats.. lucky if you had that!!
Armstrong steering & 2/60 a/c
Like to hear it pulling 15-20 tons.
Sounds like the old cattle haulers I used to hear in the 60's..
Holy fuck it must take a long time to learn that shit.
Tis one sharp rig! 😎 American pride made that ride! 🇺🇸Cabovers rule! 🥰
👍
Awesome truck
You had to keep them wound up to get anywhere!!!!
Great vid! Can you do one driving in your socks please?
Trust me if you run on dirt roads as in the oilfield and your head is that close to the top of the cab when you hit a rough spot the button on the top of your ball cap is going to hurt Been there done that
Exelente que makina

I don't blame you. It is fun to play with but not make a living with . Thanks for sharing your story.
Best sound ever.. Detroits by far the best sounding truck out there.
Donald Bartram yes.. but nice having volume and a pause button. I did watch the whole video though 👍🏻
Rain Coast
Appreciate your honesty
And your trucking contribution you made
What boots are those?
I love noise pollution at the highest decibel from the old 238 DD! Thanks!!
Great job shifting and matching revs. Not his first rodeo.
Do you have any photos of what it looked like before you began restoring it?
nothing like a screamin demon detroit
The Micky Duck
Tom------Is that a cable shifted R-96 transmission /
+Daniel Renovetz Yes , cable pull to the tranmission and has an air cylinder assist with a spring return on the case.
If it don't bang, rattle, throw you around, and make your kidneys beg for mercy? Then you ain't drivin' it right.....!☺
Oh, BTW: Love that custom mounted seat. Are they oak, hickory, or knotty pine?☺
Oak .
Heh, heh, thanks for that, I'm sorry, but I just couldn't pass up the opportunity for a good old fashioned "ragging"!

Looks like Bear Valley...
Sure is. I tried to find a way to send you a message but could not find a link. If you see me driving around or see me at a truck show come and let me know .
I herd you the other day...can`t mistake that screaming Detroit.

I love your truck, the best, of the best, but your seat would kill me.
is it 5 speed?
VladGoro25 🇺🇸I believe it is a 10 speed or even a 9 speed.
