Not the best but not a bad job for my knowledge at the time... A new (far better) video of a vintage road bike to fixie, with custom paint job, will be out soon!
Jeez ppl leave the man alone..he built a bike from scratch for cheap that he enjoys riding, that's what the video is about. It's not a tutorial, it's not an invitation for criticism, just him sharing content haha
Anyone who builds a bike themselves deserves credit. I built a single speed myself with a much bigger budget and i love that bike more than my geared bikes. Keep building and when you got some serious capital you can make some seriously sick builds.
when you wrap your bars, start with enough tape hanging over the end that you can tuck it in the bar, that will make the bar end cap fit tight. sweet build
Hey Luke, cool video! Here are a few tips that have helped me out with similar projects, if you're interested: - Soak rusty parts in Evapo-Rust, then polish them; saves a lot of elbow grease! - Grease the steerer tube before inserting the quill stem. This will prevent the wedge nut from seizing - I recommend buying a tin of park tool polylube 1000. - Buy some brake cables and housing to have lying around - its cheap and can make an old brake feel good as new. Cheers, Robert
Great video and you have a brilliant bike workshop. The bar end caps are loose because when you wrap the bar tape you need to go one full turn past the end of your handlebar, then tuck this overlap into the hole at the end of the bar, then the end cap will be a nice tight fit.
I did this rat-rod style from a bike that was run over by a truck. The only thing I bought was new bearings, but I had an old 29inch mtn bike tire with disc brake mount. And I bolted a cog right to the hub on that. Your legs get strong fast, I couldn't lock up my tire on the fixie until I had been riding for a couple months.
YES Building a bike on your own with used parts can be so much fun Checking on new parts on ebay has become part of my daily routine I'm building my bikes with a bit more budget than you do though 800€ per bike (and if spend less on one the saved money goes on top for the next)
Looks great however might wanna check out RJ the bike guys video. Align the bottom of the brake lever with the bottom of the bar flats. Always wrap bartape from the bottom up wrapping outwards folding Bartape inside the handlebars to start off for a neat finish. I
though the original rims looked great, and they will be much lighter/less sluggish than the new ones too, could have saved a lot by installing a single speed conversion kit on the old rear wheel rather than buying new ones. can also recommend rubber track grips rather than short tape, they are really quick to take off as opposed to bar tape and they last much longer than tape. happy riding
Good, job mate, really nice. The reason your bar ends don't fit because you wrapped the bars wrong, put like 1/4 of the tape over the bar end when you start the wrap and then push the tape into the end with the bar end
the barends don't fit because you are wrapping your tape wrong you dingus. At the beginning (ends) of the bars, leave half a width of tape over the end. Then tuck into the tube, and stick the barend in that
Bogdan Ionescu is right - wrapping the bar tape (and it should be bar tape, not the stuff he uses) in the right way is crucial. By the way: Having only one brake he should have used the other brake lever which is fastened on the top tube of the handle bar. And mount it before wrapping the tape. By the way #2: The chain is too long, he should shorten it - as he has these long dropouts even a chain that is "too short" would do. Summary: He should not work on bikes, even more pose with his abilitity to do so in the web!
Bogdan Ionescu I wouldn't say the grip tape is put on wrong, I could've left a bit for the bar ends but it makes wrapping Awkward. Inner tube works great, I think it's a better solution. In there tighter
Sorry to say, but it is put on wrong. You should leave a bit hanging off the bar ends and proceed to wrap the rest of the bar as you normally would, so it shouldn't make it any more awkward than the way you've done it. You then tuck and plug it to give it a nice tight fit that really doesn't need to be any more tighter as it's not a piece that typically falls out. Hasn't for me, anyway. Anyway, cool vid and goodluck. Don't pay too much mind to the harsh criticism. I think there is a way to get a message across without being a dickhead. I think people will respect you more if you admit your faults instead of pretending you intentionally did things the wrong way because it was "my way". Just say thanks for the advice and move on.
Really nice frame and awesome that you got it and the wheelset so cheap. Try lining the bottom of the brake lever up with the bottom of the bars for a slightly more natural position. Like that you removed the extension brake levers too
It may have cost you 60pounds to buy the parts needed but what about the workshop? :D All in all I must say a very good video and nice conversion! But why did you paint the wheels? They fit perfectly imo
Preabo - I work at a company called Sealey that sell tools and I get mad discount! I've got a video of me turning my shed in to a workshop if you want to check it out. They did go, but I felt like there was too much white. It didn't look mean enough, too washed out. Thanks for the feedback
Good video, i suggest you have a back brake too as your back wheel is on a free wheel side of the hub. you can also change it to the other side of the hub and it becomes a fixed gear :)
the bar tape is supposed to be wrapped starting at the bar end and over hanging by half the tape's width then the bar end can press the over hang into the tubing
You make the chain the right length so you can 'tension' it with the horizontal dropouts in the frame. Track bikes are another type of frame with these horizontal dropouts, just a little different from road bike frames in that the wheel doesn't go back, but goes in from the back.
i have similliar frame but cant find a wheelset with 125-130mm. You got some really awesome wheels, where did you get them? Did you buy hubs fitting frame or did you cold set it?
For a safe and proper fixed gear setup you should have a solid axle in the rear hub and pedals with foot retention. Perhaps a simple tutorial on how to wrap bars would have solved your end plug problem ;) Also that's not how you route a brake cable and the halflink is pretty pointless if you were to leave the rear wheel slammed back all the way back with the chain still loose :D Cool frame though. edit: Oh and you probably should've left on the inner chainring instead of the outer one. Now your gear looks like pain and I bet the chainline is way off too.
Eino Vuorinen nah. I love this bike and I wouldn't change anything. I don't want it to be the same as all the rest. And I think big sprockets are cool and half link chains are cool. Thanks for the interest tho
"half link chains are cool" "wouldn't say the grip tape is wrong" please take some fucking constructive criticism, a half link chain is almost pointless if you leave it as loose as you did, and you wrapped the bar tape wrong, hence you had to shove some bullshit up your handlebars.
how did you manage to use the quick release on the rear wheel? i am doing basically the same cheap build and the quick release cant close hard enough, i end up with the wheel moving after a couple o minutes of pedaling
You realize that you spray painted brake track on your wheels, It wouldn´t be a problem if the bike was brakeless, but.... also watch tutorial on how to start wrap a bartape end plug will fit if you do it right, ride safe
Little question, does the black paint on the wheels disappear with the time when you use your brakes or is it strong enough to stay black like in your video? Because I wanna paint my wheels in black and I'm a bit afraid about that. (Sorry for my bad English)
No it has come off! I expected it to tho. I think you can get special brake pads that domt remove paint, well arent meant to. But otherwise, overtime its inevitable
Really nice build 👍🏼 I highly recommend straps/cages or clipless pedals to ride it.. a front brake (which doesn’t look that smooth on just one side) will kill you in a panic situation... good luck with your bike ! :)
yard sale cycles I don't actually know, I'll see what it's like when I come to it. They could be a bit stiff but I'm not bothered about scratching paint
@@rudolfszvaigznite9583 2 can of layer spray paint wont stop your paint from chipping if you using rim brake my dude. the paint on brake line will chip sooner or later, its inevitable. been there done that. except you professionally coating it with finisher

Grease the quill on the bar stem next time and it wont rust in there. Great vid.

good job. fun looking ride from vintage bike.
Thought you were going to change it to a belt for some reason. nice video
I wouldn t touch that bike at first place the only thing i could have changed ,the wheels and clean it a bit
Very interesting brake, never seen it been done that way before

you should have the front end of the bike, pointing down, when in the bike workstand. that reduces the tendency for the front wheel to flop about.

nice bike but one dropbarbrake is just not done? buy some smallerbrakes or put straps on your pedals
I live in the uk ,is it ok to not have a back brake??

Love the build but also I would have kept the white rims.

How much is 60 pounds in USD??
Also, how much is 15 quid in USA money? Thanks ahead of time for the help.
Why to make a bicycle to single speed? What about uphills and max speed at single speed?is that not a disadvantage?
You're right, definitely a disadvantage with the hills! In this case, it was a lot cheaper to make it single speed and they're just good fun to ride.
