- Welcome to my channel. I'm Roaming Ree.
I'm back in the UK for the summer. I thought I'd visit some of my old stomping grounds.
Next stop the London Borough of Newham. In particular Manor Park or Manor Pakistan as I fondly called it.
As a Londoner can't believe how much the area has changed and sadly not for the better.
Hit the 'LIKE' button and leave a 'COMMENT'. Don't forget to 'SUBSCRIBE' to my channel, ROAMING REE. As always, all comments, good, bad or ugly are very much appreciated.

Thanks for the upload, i too grew up in Manor Park, and was there from 1966 to 1996. All my family were from the area so i know it well. The Army & Navy had stores on both corners at one time, surplus/clothing on the Stratford side, and camping equipment on the Ilford side. The mosque at the top of Kensington Ave was a bombed out cinema and it stood like that until the early 1990s. When i was a kid, some shops along by Byron Avenue were old school greengrocers, a small Co-Op, a Trustee Savings Bank, a chippy and Chans chinese take-away. Further down past the Ruskin Arms, was a little sub post office and Hayters ironmongers store, so full it was stacked to the ceilings, he had tall ladders to pick things out that you wanted to buy..... As you say, they are building like crazy to put the non stop imports of economic migrants into homes but without any extra infrastructure to deal with the influx.... The supermarkets say they sell enough food for population of around 80 million..... i'm sure their numbers are correct unlike our corrupt politicians!.... I hope you do some more from Newham, perhaps Upton Park, or around the old West Ham bus garage (i used to work there in the 1980s) in Greengate Street. Even Upton Park garage has closed and is now flats!
@SoiBuakhaoRoutemasterbus many thanks for the comment, wow 1966. I remember most of the places u stated. Even with the issues it was a safer place back then. I remember playing out in the streets and coming home late. We knew alot of ppl coz they settled in the area. Homes is the way forward not flats, I believe. But times change. I gonna go to ilford next ,then Boleyn and Green St.
@@Roamingree I will watch with interest, thanks!
Thanks for video, I lived in 1st avenue Manor Park and went to school there, then escaped. Manor Park was a fantastic place for growing up and enjoying the social life of teenage years....
@simplespanish2031 my pleasure my friend. Ur spot on it was a great place. Glad u escaped to fresh pastures 😂.
Just found your channel. Love it. Moved over to Chadwell Heath 7 years back. Now living in Harild Hill. Im a West London man myself so find your videos really interesting and informative about the areas around my home. God bless mate
@chuckyarla6642 Thanks for the comment bro. Small world, I grew up in East London but moved out. My kids live in Harold Hill 😂. Nice and open location with deers. Who would've thought that
@@Roamingree Deers!! Don't talk about the deers. Never seen so many. One was eating my left out rubbish 2 weeks back. Tried to shoo it but it just looked at me to say "make me move"😁. Obviously I walked away . God bless mate
@chuckyarla6642 Ahahahaha I never thought I'd see deers in London but it was a real wow moment for the kids.
I lived in Manor Park for the first 16 years of my life and it's great to see that High Street North is catering for the local population. It is a shame that the advent of online shopping is changing the way we shop. At one time the shops at the East Ham had burned out upper floors from the war. Probably a bit before your time. in the early 60's. There wasn't so much poverty, Manor Park was quite well off. The building and gated area opposite The Ruskin is a cemetery. The Ruskin used to have a boxing club upstairs. The church at the bottom of Strone Road was a Methodist church and there was a Vauxhall dealership next door. The Christian centre used to be a Catholic church. Is the pub on Romford Road the Lord Raglan? Think you missed the best bits of Manor Park. The Army and Navy store was on both corners and they did camping stuff as well as work clothes, even bought my first sheepskin from them in '71. Strange listening and watching about somewhere I lived over 50 years ago, I will have to have a wander around before I die.
@ohyeah2816 Thanks for a great comment sir. I remember the High St North in it's pomp, Co-op department store, Shopping Hall, BHS, Woolworths, just to name afew. Yes online has alot to answer for. But they were simpler times 🥲. I completely forgot about the car dealership but Army & Navy had 3 sites once, on the corner of Monega Rd and 2 on the j/w Romford Rd. You should visit but unlike me try to see the future rather than the past, difficult I know as I loved my childhood there.
That's a Jewish Cemtery
different world now could be a different planet
@mabbrey definitely feels like a different planet mate. I swear Aliens live amongst us 🤣
The large now closed Pub on the corner of High Street North and Romford Road was the Earl of Essex a real landmark pub
@davidvoisey4531 you're right mate. Proppa landmark. I read the local residents lost a court ruling and it's going to be turned into flats.
Hi Roaming Ree, you need to help me out here. I grew up not far from there. (Barkingside) I used to go to West Ham and get my hair cut at Carlo's in Green Street. Brought my Northerner 10 hole Dr Martins at the Army and Navy. When I was at school everyone mixed with each other. Black, Irish, Asian , Jewish and English we were all Cockney's. ( 70's/80's) But now the Area has been nothing more than "ethnically cleansed" with people wholly indifferent to being in the UK. This is so different to my Asian school friends and associates. That said most of the young people would be the children of my Asian friends. Where did this indifference come from as I am sure it was not the parents being of our generation?
@FHIPrincePeter Hello brother, you’re spot on. Growing up most of us just got along. Colour wasn't a major issue, there was always racial issues but mates always stuck together. Unlike now where it's all about colour and ethnicity. When I try to explain this I get called a racist, coconut and Reform supporter. Like u I'm puzzled as how simple ppl have become. Tolerance is a thing of the past.
@@Roamingree Yes it's a concern. The younger generation seems more detached from Britain than their parents. Your are right we seem to be more segregated now than back in the day.
All English live in Essex which is more English and everything there and cleaner area .
@@FHIPrincePeterRacism is growing and segregation is all over the UK people are not integrated anymore .
@FHIPrincePeter We use to go out, meet ppl and learnt to integrate but social media has alot to answer too. There will be many more loners soon.
Gosh, I lived there about 30 years ago. I went to the Uni down there.
@GlobetrotterGary What uni did u go mate ?
@Roamingree East London University.
@GlobetrotterGary my older brother went there but at the Barking site on Longbridge Road, UEL.
@@Roamingree yes, I also went there. I lived in Manor Park, 1992. Hasn't changed much, maybe a few more shops.
@GlobetrotterGary yes alot more shops. Specially surprised with the amount of vegetarian restaurants. Thanks for the comment
5:50 Ruskin Arms, historical venue where Iron Maiden began their long and successful career in 1980. Probably not just Maiden, I’m sure many bands had a start at the Ruskin Arms. Sad to see this old venue closed, perhaps it never recovered from the general downturn in the hospitality sector after the pandemic?
@jindre7547 Spot on, The Ruskin had a proud history of heavy metal, punk and mods bands as far back as I remember. Very sad to see such a beautiful venue closed. I got the feeling the Ruskin lost its appeal before the pandemic, but can't be sure. Many thanks for the comment.
I lived in manor park but east ham was my second home as my grandmother lived off barking rd i remember the old coop and those pubs i went to school in manor park salisbury rd then onto plashet wow so sad to see its run down the high streets i remember argos chains jewellery shop wh smith the old LEB fishers the old market seahorse fish and chip and my favorite indian restaurant was on the barking rd along from the town hall barclays bank used it for years the pub in manor park was the earl of essex the paddy pub as it was then thanks for sharing cant belive the army and navy has gone
@julieruthven1318 Yep definitely surprised about the Army & Navy. Thanks for the comment
Ken’s western store opposite 😊 and Dennis drew dance studio on Romford rd 😊
@iconicetiquette4546 i don't remember Ken's but I do remember the dance studio. It's funny how u remember the small stuff
This is where I used to live from birth 1977 to 1983. Byron Avenue was where I lived. All the roads of High Street North are named after the poets. Byron, Shelley, Rosebery, Coldridge, Ruskin etc. I do visit here too as I like Kebabish Original. Sherrad Road was where my nanny and nanny ji lived. Loved visiting them on weekend too. Days when we still 7:38 only had 3 tv channels
@rajnirvan3336 I still have friends living down Byron and Kensington. We use play football everyday at Plashet Park. God I miss those days, simple and carefree days 😪
@@Roamingree I know what you mean. Kensington Road was where my Primary School. Was there for 1 year and really enjoyed it
@rajnirvan3336 my mates who went to Kensington still live down Kensington 😂
East Ham and Manor Park used to be one of east London's 'desirable' middle class areas before WW2 with an amazing High Street with shops of all kinds and an equally amazing cultural life with its own theatre, numerous cinemas and thriving churches of all denominations. It stayed that way as a pleasant ,clean, relatively crime-free suburb until around the 1970's although the theatre had been demolished in the late 1950's and the cinemas were being converted into bingo halls, etc. by that time. Then the 'enrichment' set in.
Thanks for the comment. Exactly spot on, I'm a late 60's baby, I remember Barking, East Ham and Manor Park and seeing the change especially late 80's and 90's. It was tough at times but way worse now.
looks like a ghost town THANKS
@MalcolmJames-sg3zg Was abit surprised how quiet it was for a Saturday afternoon.
The pub on the Romford Road was called Earl of Essex, I think. Guess what it’s gonna be, FLATS
@rizmahd You're right, Earl of Essex. Unfortunately flats and ppl r the only things growing not just in the UK but worldwide
@@rizmahd yes earl. Remember picking up the drinks from there. But never a problem. The biggest problem place was Parr road tenants club ,near footy ground . No mini cab firm would pick up from there ..
@colinstickland3130 was rough round the back there, plus there was no through road. I use to hate walking round there 😂
I think the downstairs is reopening as a restaurant and/or bar. It's a listed building. I'm pretty sure I read that it's due to reopen soon.
@PST101 Yep, listed building. Hope you're right. Really hope someone makes a success of it. Remember the Ruskin in its heyday.
Wow totally different from what I remember. I think the Mosque on the corner of Kensington Ave use to be a theatre, with Kensington Youth Centre across the road.
@rizmahd yes I remember the youth centre, we use to go Saturday mornings. Use to keep us off the streets.
@barryryan5187 it's not religion mate. The demographic of the area changes due to the ppl. If ppl live in crap the area will be crap.
Driving car's like that in Newham must be dealer's. If i saw it in Chigwell its makes sense
Sir Ree, love your content especially walk-by around London, never been. Watching from Scotland. if you can make video of old Asian take-aways or restaurant back in the day and if they still exist or all the best food places in London for hot curries. or since you have moved abroad is the food nice there.....brrrrrr Take care Naz
@naz0508 Thank you for the kind words. I've got afew more areas to cover and will focus on more takeaways. There r too many food places 🤣
where did you move to from east london?
@user-kf8kw9cg3f Dad settled in Newham, near Greengate, then bought in East Ham, 1960'ish. I moved out mid 90's, for better schooling for the kids. Really broke my heart coz everything and everyone I knew was in East Ham. But things have worked out.
Sadly still inside the M25 but looking at a move out of London now.
@@RoamingreeSpain
Knew a girl in Ruskin avenue
@colinstickland3130 Lucky you. Love Spain was really close moving there. Most of my mates have retired to Spain. If Turkiye doesn't work out, Definitely be Spain 😂
War graves in woodgrange cementary . German airman. When i visited mothers grave i was asked about these war graves as the new muslim owners wanted to clear the ground. I was asked if i knew where they were. Grandma lil always said they were by the railway line .
Bro Newham and Redbridge to many chicken shops and betting shops. Where you live now bro at roomingtree
@T.Channel Far too many chicken shops, that why everyone's so unhealthy 😂. Currently in Gants Hill, top end of Longwood.
@@Roamingree was in Gant hill today, got to stop going spice hut especially..
@T.Channel Gants Hill has changed. So many good food places and betting shops now. Still quite leafy towards clayhall.
@@Roamingree Clayhall, Woodford nice mixture of diverse cultures of British, Asian, African, Carribbean. The Epping, Essex borders, Buckhurst hill, loughton, Chigwell
@@T.Channel couldn't agree with you more, great areas to live. That's the furthest I could move. I'm a city boy at heart 😂
All ex pubs
bars and derelicts gonna convert into flats and houses one of khan's
Do one on Jewish synagogues 😂
@cedricemmanuel2082 I tried at the Gants Hill synagogue but they didn't like the area to b filmed, so I had to respect their wishes. It's the only religious building that had security walking the perimeter.
Used to go that cinema. With a asian girl. Loved her . Didnt turn up one day. Knocked on door got chased by uncle tom cobley and all with knives and choppers . Evidently she was sold to be a wife of someone from Pakistan. Laws changed since then on this marrage lark.
Ahahahaha yes I remember those dark days. Hiding to see girls, trouble with fathers and brothers. I don't think those days have changed much, we just got older and not much wiser 😂😂😂
@@Roamingree agreed. Big time. But I thought the world of that girl
Sorry meant roomingree. Thats why Newham has the highest crime rate in London police only wanba patrol in wealthy white areas like Havering and Bromley
@T.Channel Newham is a very busy borough and since policing divisions have changed in2 areas, it's made less police officers for much larger size areas. No walking patrols anymore.
ok
@@AngelaVlahos Thank you
Jewish cemetery still there
Yes Jewish cemetery still there. Two really small sites now for the war graves. Looks like they r trying to preserve em.
