He's talking about someone that used to be part of his community. A friend, a mate, part of his crowd, basically, but who felt above it, and took off as soon as they could and never looked back, never wrote, and forgot about his people. And he misses him, but he resents him. It's about abandonment.

You've made my night. I love New Model Army and have been part of The Family from the mid 80's.
I would love you to check out more of their 40 year back catalogue.

The tribute is a reference to people who have been lost. In particular, Justin (the singer and co-writer), is referencing the late Rob Heaton who wrote the music for this song.

" Green And Grey by New Model Army is a melancholic song about reflection and nostalgia. The narrator is on a bus ride through the lush valleys, reminiscing about their past in the area and the people they left behind. The singer longs for them still and is reminded of the “call” to a “land of gold and poison”, a place of beauty and danger they all face in life. The song reflects on the idea that one can never truly escape the place they come from and the bounds of family and obligation. Though the narrator’s old friend has sought out a new, more prosperous life away from the traditional upbringing, the singer laments their absence with a sense of admiration and envy. The bittersweet beauty of the landscape is a reminder of all the wasted potential and roads not taken.”
It’s NMA’s ballad. Written by original drummer Robert Heaton who is sadly no longer with us. Hence the dedication. NMA have been going since 1980 and remain relevant. They have crossed many genres along the way - punk/folk rock/hard rock/metal and have one of the most fiercely loyal fan bases out there. “The family”. A band with 3 generations of fans going to their concerts. One of my personal faves so thank you for giving this a spin and I hope you venture down this rabbit hole a little more. You might find it rewarding. 🤘
If you have a spare hour I highly recommend this recent documentary on them.

Yeah same. I remember when a friend handed me ghost of cain. It had just been released. First time I saw them was in 1989. Best was probably the 30year anniversary shows in Brooklyn. Went over to the UK in 2018 to see them 3 times back to back. I grew up with this band. Justin sounds as good now as he ever did

The song is about living in a small town/village where most of the young people move away for work or to follow fame. It is a beautiful song about a person he misses. ❤

@mjoefrith it warms my heart to know others out there know the significance of NMA. A life changing and heart expanding band. Justin saved my life so many times. I got to meet him in Seattle years ago. I poured my heart out to him and thanked him for what he does.

Brad like several NMA songs of that era leaving home is a recurrent theme. Which Justin of course did himself to make a new life elsewhere.

    Oh dude.
You have no idea, you just opened the floodgates.
No one just "likes" this band.
You either don't care, or this fanbase is about to become your extended family.
    There's no in between.

If you want to dig really deep into NMA you should react to Vengence the song which made them them. And to see how appreciated they are in GB you should listen to New Model Army - Vagabonds & Fate. 14 april 2018 Londres NOATV. That will shake you to your core.
