    This is NOT a promotional video. I pay for all of my flights and hotels (and I always tell you how much!) so I can be as honest and impartial as possible. I do not receive any special treatment that wouldn’t otherwise be publicly accessible, in fact, the hotels and airlines have no idea about my visit and that's the way I like it!

    This video is excellent, thank you for your honest review. Austrian Airlines is my home carrier and I'm really proud of the airlines performence because they are simply one of the best carriers for long haul flights to the US or back to Europe. Sadly covid-costcutting destroyed a lot. Normally there is a chef on board who prepares meals, the cafe menue was much bigger and the catering was better before covid. Austrian provides amenity kits that include the most important things that you need for the flight. The packaging can be reused and the design is constantly changing but I do share your opinion that it might feel a little bit cheap. Privacy wasn't a big thing back in times when the 767 and 777 got these new seats and unfortunately they won't introduce new seats as all of the long haul aircrafts will be phased out and replaced by 787-9 pretty soon.

    • @tfft
      @tfft  Год назад +2

      That amenity kit strategy has “let’s keep looking for a cheaper alternative” written all over it. One of those times where nothing at all probably would have feel more “premium” than getting a muslin sachet lol

    Well, European airlines seem to be only slightly better than American ones so that implied message of "we're doing you a favor and how dare you not like it" is almost being adopted by them also. I still think Delta outcompetes so many European options including Air France and Lufthansa. Best European airline for me is Swiss

    • @tfft
      @tfft  Год назад +1

      Delta is likely the best of the big three in the US but for all of the US carriers there’s just such a distinct lack of refinement about them that is a big turn off for me.
      I understand “flight attendants are there for your safety” and all of that, but in the US I think this is simply used as an excuse for crappy and ‘casual’ service. I want a business class flight to feel just a little bit special. Like a bit of an occasion. This is how I think Air France beats the pants off of American and other Euro carriers. (Though admittedly they need to work on consistency).

    Flew recently on the same flight. The seats are very small, I couldn't sleep, and the large passenger across the aisle couldn't fit laying flat in the seat so he also didn't sleep either. The crew were great and transparent about our delay. They did also serve dinner in the dark... and it was a bit too slow for the short transatlantic hop.

    Absolutely fantastic video, starting from the great camera work to the educative narrative and your amazing editing skills. Also, a video very relevant to myself as i started recently to look at Austrian to spend my MM miles, as i continue to refuse to fly LH in the current seat configuration. But what a disappointing experience. As to the luggage, my original idea would have been the other way around: the ones next to the counter did not make it, hehe. Despite the shortcomings of the seat, i would still prefer it to LH and their 2-2-2 configuration. It is sad to see how much they are cost cutting. The 6 Euro Bin 50 is something that you would get in eco of EK or QR - and it is reat that you always show the market value, . And the most expensive Grüner Veltliner i found for 13,87€ on a search in german for the austrian and german market. The stripped down coffee menue is very disappointing again. And the combination of the chicken with those beans is indeed very strange..certainly not austrian. So what alternative should i look for now to spend my MM miles?. Swiss might be the best option, as i am not a big fan of Turkish..which seems to have some commonalities with Austrian: great food but the rest so so. Yet, i just read yesterday that Austrian too is planning a big overhaul of its product in all classes, with the Chef returning as well..so lets hope for the best! Kind regards!

    • @tfft
      @tfft  Год назад

      Yes I think Swiss is the easy choice of the bunch, unless you’re flying on an LH 787 route (or an LH ex PR A350 Route, but that’s a gamble).
      The reason I guess the way I did about the bags is because relatively speaking there weren’t many bags there, 50 perhaps- split between the VIE and MUC flights. Plus, mine didn’t go there… and did get lost haha. Thanks as always for watching 🙏🏻

      Grüner Veltliner can be one of the finest white vines in the word if from the right region which is Wachau in Austria alongside the river danube. These Vines can be way more expansive than 13,87.

    Hi! I do the ground handling for LHG at JFK T1 (i also saw myself at the check in counter there, haha.) i just want to explain and answer your queries regarding the bags…
    Unfortunately T1 is very run-down and doesn’t work properly at times. That day, the bag belt went down, so we all had to manually sort the bags out by the counters and send them by priority of flight departure. That explains the line of bags.
    As for the bags not being loaded….the majority of the baggage handlers-contracted by dnata-called out that day, so many bags weren’t loaded and lots of our flights were delayed as a result. It was terrible. I do apologize for the inconvenience that you’ve experienced from this, but I always strive to provide the best service to passengers, especially as an avgeek and traveller myself!

    Had a similar experience at the checkin in JFK some years ago. US airports occasionally rely on manpower instead of robust smart solutions, which makes them sometimes a POS.
    Still bags get "lost" everywhere all the time. Happened to me in Europe 4 times in the last 1.5 years. If you just pack unessential stuff you won't really mind if it gets delivered to your front door a day later.

    Every time I've flown in and out of Vienna, mostly on A320s and E170 or 190s whatever they had, I've always had nice experiences, including staff and everybody.
    I lived in Vienna and yeah, the staff itself in the airport is quite a mess.
    Never flew with any wide body aircraft, however, in their small aircrafts everything was fine.
    Out of 30 flights, I've also got my bag lost. Getting in contact to them was a BIG mess. Finally, I got someone to contact me about the lost bag. I could either get money for my stuff or start an investigation.
    I had in my lost bag my almost top speced MacBook. They told me the bag got lost at Bucharest. When I showed them the location of my Mac (even tho it was turned off, I somehow still managed to track it) being somewhere in the Vienna-Airport, they SOMEHOW found my bag the same day and it got delivered to my apartment in Vienna the following day.

    Your review looks a bit over critical... But I might be biased as Austrian is my home carrier 😉 I understand your disappointment with the ground ops but there is nothing Austrian could really do as this is done by PANYNJ. I last flew them in C to LA last summer and the coffee menu is reduced since Covid but if you ask they try to serve you individually, on top the Flying Chefs will return soon so there is hope 😁 that this also marks the return of the extensive coffee menu... Just flew Swiss in C to DXB and their A330 is much younger but I prefer the Austrian seat and the much bigger screen. I assume you continue on EVA to TPE... I will ride them in early May and I am looking vety much forward... Still liked your video 👍

To my knowledge JFK T1 is the only terminal in the US currently owned and operated (or at least long term leased and operated) by foreign airlines- in this case LH, AF & JL I believe. While it's true that often the ground staff do not work directly for the airlines, they do work for a company that LH CHOOSES and are ultimately responsible for- especially considering how large LH's operation is at JFK, there's simply no excuse.

    Hi Kevin, I have been following you for some time as you build your channel. I am a huge fan of your eloquent narration, focus on anonymity and consistency. I also like your video and production quality. All great. I also understand your desire for very structured reviews so that your viewers know what they will get in every review. Some other travel reviews are like this, others have a bit more fluidity while still keeping the content consistent. In a situation like this where there was a huge fail by the airline, a bit of a post flight recap on the luggage situation might have been helpful. To knowingly push with so much luggage left behind without warning the passengers is close to criminal. How was it handled on arrival? What compensation was or was not given? What was the further explanation of the Austrian staff in Vienna? I think your viewers would like to know. If structure hurts content you might consider a bit more flexibility. Thank you for what you do! You really are amazing!

      Has nothing to do with the airport. JFK T1 is operated by TOGA which is jointly owned by LH, AF, KE & JL. Even if pieces of the operation are contracted out, it’s still ultimately LH’s fault/responsibility.

    Weird. that Air France is a 777. I have flown A380 between JFK and CDG

      AF retired all of their A380s in 2020.

    That seat looks so narrow. The decor looks really plain and uninspiring. But efficient I guess......ya ya ya. The menu looks good. Austrians do plain well.

      I wouldn’t characterize leaving all of the passengers baggage at the point of origin as efficient lol.

    Shameful ground handling! That’s what you get when Airlines sub it out. Regrettably quite common issue, as airlines lower their operating cost.
    Interesting QR/EK, demands on their ground Ops contract, extra staffing and a stringent timing for baggage delivery as well penalties for deficiencies.

      In this case the contracting is different though and puts the burden clearly on LH’s shoulders. T1 at JFK is operated by TOGA, which is jointly owned by LH, AF, KE & JL. Unlike a typical out station, in this case much more within their control. Thanks as always for the support 🙏🏻

      I worked for unifi a ground contractor for Delta, and the company treated us poorly which in turn led to delayed bags, and delayed arriving and departure times. I told my ground crew that because we get treated like crap then we are going to make sure they get poor quality service. Of course we didn't damage or rough up the bags
