I had my first oil change at 600 mi at the dealership since it was part of the complimentary 24-month maintenance program. I purchased my Honda CRV Sport Hybrid FWD in Dec of 2024 and will change my oil every 3000 mi/3months, whichever comes first. I will run Amsoil Hybrid 0W-20 with a Purolator filter and not the OEM filter which is just an entry level Fram cellulose media filter. Filters are cheap and major engine repair is super expensive. Great video, by the way....
“ so much room for activities” 😂
Also we usually take the key out of the car at our shop to avoid any slip ups
Hahah someone was paying attention :) Yeh, that's good practice. Thanks for watching!

if you shop goes under osha standards its part of the lock out tag out
Thank you for your tips
Hi Mike.
Hope you and your family had a great holiday. Happy new year too. Nice to see you in front of the camera again too.
Hey Jeremy, thanks we did. Hope you did as well! Thanks for watching!

Hi Mike,
I read through the TE Connectivity brochures on the types of hybrid connectors they’re supplying to OEMs and they are quite impressive.
Thanks for another great video!
Hey Dave, thanks for watching! A lot has gone into making these as safe as possible!
~Mike
Wow our ever new cars! Great points you went through..Thanks and keep it going.
Hey, thanks BlueJay Outpost! I love seeing the new technology in cars. Gives me something new to learn about :)

Over tight drain plug and filter: I think they tighten themselves through vibration, hot/cold cycles, etc. The other day I was lower bay, the upper bay tech put in the wrong oil. So, he came down to redrain the engine. He put the wrench on the drain plug and was surprised how loose it was! We torque drain plugs; this one was 18 pound-feet. It was a lot tighter than that when it first came in! Thank you for sharing and stay safe.
Hey Dwayne, thanks for watching! Yeh, you might be on to something there.
~Mike
Thanks for the tips. I have a 23 accord hybrid. I am planning to change the oil at 5K well before the oil minder says to. Thanks again.
Good point on how to get the engine to start. 👍
Hey Bert, thanks for watching!
~Mike
2022 Accord is not GDI or other direct injection. It is port injection like the older cars, 6700 miles on mine and I love it for now. Thanks for the video, came here via ETCG.
good job it nice to see it not that hard to do some of youe own on these cars cheers
Thanks Wackey! Yeh, these really aren't terrible to work on at all!

PERFECT STARTING REPLACEMENT OF OIL DRAIN WASHER (CRUSH WASHER), TORQUING OIL DRAIN PLUG AND REPLACING THE FACTORY OIL FILTER HAND TIGHT ; THEN 3/4 TIGHTENING OIL FILTER.
First time I've watched a video this in depth on hybrids. I've never seen one in person except for an older Toyota Highlander I picked up for a car dealer once. I think it was an '06 if I remember right - I had no idea that was even a thought back in '06! The starting battery was TINY. Barely bigger than a full dress motorcycle battery. Engine itself was tiny, too. I don't recall seeing orange wire loom, though - it was probably black from all the years of use, I figure. This thing had a good chunk of miles on it - over 250k. It was a no-crank, but I punted that one - I had no desire to get involved with that since I've never had a service info subscription. I have a hard enough time fixing normal cars, lol!
Anyway, I appreciate the heads-up! Propulsion systems may differ, but the rest of any car is still a car! 👍
Hey Smitty, thanks for watching! You're completely right, a car is a car and fixing it doesn't vary all that much. That's why I laugh when people ask if we work on Euro cars or whatever...cars are cars, sure sometimes the info is harder to get but electricity and the laws of motion don't care where it was made, or in this case, its propulsion system.
~Mike
I was wondering how you would go about warming up the oil before draining it without a ride around town. Thanks for answering that. I don't own a hybrid but I'm an old retired guy just trying to stay in the loop a little. Big thanks to guys like you, Eric O., Ivan, Ray and others for helping with that. 😁👍👍
Hey Rick, thanks for watching! Always learning, right!?

Great video. I go with 5k intervals. After the first one done at 500 miles. .. one thing I run into often is the side jack points make it difficult to put a jack stand if there is no front or rear center jack point. Wish they continued to provide the center front and rear jack points
Ahh yes, I agree. I prefer to life the front end from the front as well. I miss the the crossmembers or subframes that allowed that. Thanks for watching!
~Mike
Normally I don't fill the filter on Hondas but I have in Some cases I ran into on Hybrids if I don't It will set a "low oil pressure" message or DTC code for low oil pressure and I would have to take the time to clear the code. I now fill the filter and haven't had any issues.
Interesting for sure! I've never run into that but will keep my eyes open. Thanks for watching!

Great Mike 1St Thing I've watched on Actual maintenance, Do read BUZZ news on EV. Time to keep up on the Next generation
For sure Jimmy, gotta keep up to date! Thanks for watching.

This actually ended up being a much more rational video than I thought just by the title. Must be for all the Midwesterner's still trying to deal with trucks & sports cars being V6's now.
Hahahaha, the V8 is not dead yet.
But it is amazing how much power they can squeeze out of a 4 cylinder these days.

Hello 👋🏻 Mike !
What if they changed my oil and told me that they forgot to turn off the car . So basically Engine was on! On half hybrid half regular car model !
Mike, what so you think about sucking the oil through the dipstick rather than draining it from below, especially when the oil filter is on the top of the engine?
Hey William, some cars require it. Where service info says to do it, i'd try it. For stuff like this, i prefer to drain from the bottom. Plus this gets you under the car for a thorough inspection. Thanks for watching!
~Mike
Hey Mike,
Should the key FOB be in a Faraday cage or aluminium foil before you drain the oil? What about 'service mode'? I have shown my students that even aluminium foil wrapped around the FOB will stop transmission to the vehicle. I have heard horror stories of Hybrids self-starting on the hoist with the oil being drained. I personally have had a Toyota Prius self-start while I was nearby with the FOB in my pocket. The Hybrid/EV training I have done have highlighted the importance of isolating the FOB.
I haven't heard of needing to go to that extreme. I've also never heard of one starting with the ignition off...I wonder if it's possible? Thanks for watching!
~Mike
@@GoTechTraining Yeah, It scared the hell out of me when it happened. The training I did really highlighted the importance of making sure the FOB was isolated in some form. They gave several examples of where someone had gone to lunch only to come back to a seized engine. I always stress to my apprentices the importance of at least wrapping the FOB in aluminium foil - it works a treat - even with it sitting in your lap when you try to start the vehicle, it won't.
Thanks for the video. 😉
I’ve had one start on me before while it was on the lift, I had a spark plug out as I was getting ready to do a leak down test for a suspect head gasket. All I’ve ever had to do was place the key on my toolbox though, never anything special for isolation
That's crazy!!! Talk about a horrible day. I'll keep that in mind. This process may require a follow up video. I'm intrigued as to how the car can start with the ignition off. I'll dig and if something interesting is found, put out second vid.
~Mike
That's wild! And the ignition was off, right AutoMedic? I wonder if its related to HV state of charge? Interesting for sure. Thanks for sharing. I bet it scared the 💩 right out of you.
~Mike
Wonder If you would mention, not to leave the key fob inside the car. Ive seen Toyota's start up while the tech was working on it.
Just be safe and remove Fobs from all Hybrids.
i'm thinking it might be good to pull a fuse for the coils or injectors something like that just to be safe 5 k on normal vehicles 3k on short run cars. that 10k was just a way to keep epa off thier backs since epa wants less oil used
Hey Richard, not a bad idea. Can't start without spark! thanks for watching, as always :)
~Mike
Even asking this question makes me think the shop is in the boonies
Hey Max,
I guess it depends on your definition of the boonies LOL.
But we do live in a very cold climate and are just starting to see a large amount of hybrid vehicles.
This technology makes a lot of people nervous to work on. Which is a good thing, even though it is not that much different from a standard car, there is a protentional for danger. But our message was that 90% of the vehicle is unchanged and you can still repair almost everything with out ever touching the high voltage system.
Thanks for watching and reaching out!
~Ryan
Interesting way to get the engine started. If the car belongs to you, can you provide a review of the set up.
Thanks for watching! What are you interested in seeing? I'm not sure what you mean by "set up"
~Mike

I know they just came out but you think you can do one on a 23 Accord lol

Do you smog on hybrid
Hi Mike the gas engine on a hybrid only runs to charge the 200v battery for the electric side of the vehicle doesn't it? , i suppose that is why the oil would be so clean, SO HOW OFTEN DO YOU THINK IT WOULD TURN ON IN 5000 MILES?
Hey Carl, thanks for watching! So on this model the engine is used to charge the battery and propel the vehicle, sometimes at the same time. The engine runs more when it's cold out too. It would be interesting to track engine on mileage vs vehicle mileage...but I haven't seen any menus on the car that offer that data.
~Mike
@@GoTechTraining oh I did not know that the engine also propels the vehicle, I thought that it only charges the battery, so I just learnt something thank you Mike
It’s hard to believe that we have messing with these battery toaster cars for over twenty years now.
I would rather have a tight filter than the ones I go to remove and they are scary loose
Hahha yeh, they've been mainstream for a while for sure. They are certainly growing in popularity now though.
~Mike
I heard that the orange wire puts out 120 volts . Is that true?
Actually on this one I believe it's 290V DC.

What if they changed my oil and told me that they forgot to turn off the car . So basically Engine was on.
Put the vehicle in maintenance mode; will force the engine to start. Combination of Double tap gas pedal, transmission selection and depressing the brake pedal. Check your manual.
Sure, that works! I could see using that if needs any engine diag done. For a quick oil check, turning the heat on is way faster! 🤣 thanks for watching!

I look at the bottom of that car in fear. I can't imagine what will happen in around 10 years from now, with them up in the Salt Belt. Those kinds of shields corrode so badly they literally fall off the fasteners. I would imagine the high voltage cable with short, and uh, "It was insured...right?"
Yeh, they corrode pretty bad up here in WI. We'll see how they do on here!
~Mike
I have a feeling fire departments are going to have to all add another piece of equipment over the next 10 years! 😉
Have you seen videos of how much it takes to put out a full electric that's on fire. Those things burn so hot! Training is key for the FD's. Where to cut, where not to, that kinda thing.
~Mike
@@GoTechTraining Yeah, lithium batteries are wild when they burn! They just keep feeding the fire it seems. Even a small iPhone will make a spectacular fire - I could only imagine a full EV battery array going up! Would be something to see I'd bet!
Oh I bet it would be...as long as I don't own it and noone gets hurt, of course.
~Mike
I want to know why manufactures are pressing 5k semi synthetic oil changes and 10k full synthetic. I’m still going by 3k and 6k. All these new vehicles burn oil after the 3k mark is achieved on the oil. I have my suspicions as to why manufactures say you can go so far when really you shouldn’t and it involves the EPA.
Hey Thomas, i'm not a fan of the recommendations either. I've often wondered if it's tied to the "lower cost of ownership" award that gets handed out.
~Mike
@@GoTechTraining I theorize the big manufactures get some sort of carbon credits or break by pretending these cars are less harmful on the environment by going further between oil changes. But the reality is these cars are becoming junk too early and end up in scrap yards mostly rotting away. The customer wants more power and the government wants less environmental waste but the overall result is an over tuned delicate engine that has a major catastrophe that causes most to just junk the car or trade up.
That's a sound theory Thomas! You may just be on to something there. Thanks for sharing
~Mike
Has anyone sent oil samples to Blackstone? A friend did with his K20 EP, 10k OCI with Penn Syn and blackstone said he'd could go another 5-6k miles, also his K didn't use/burn oil that is common on them.
🚗 bloody cars haha
Cars are so much fun, right?
~Mike
@@GoTechTraining yeah fun ... or well the fun is in the result! we're in the middle of trying to work out what has gone wrong in an LS we purchased, expecting flattened roller on a lifter after pulling heads they are totally fine, scratching our heads. I put a video up the sounds as it first started till now and everyone tells me many different things, love cars but when you haven't got a clue to whats actually wrong in a taredown you certainly feel challenged.
That sounds terrible. I wonder what an in-cylinder pressure transducer would show?
~Mike
Oil changes every 6 months on VVT engines or GDI too. None VVT or GDI once a year.
You must not put on a lot of miles then? I put on about 20-25000 a year so I'm changing it roughly every 3 months.
