Aneka, the instruction in your videos is very good. I like the fact that you teach the slow, "classical" construction techniques. Like many sewists, I have developed my own construction sequences, such as sewing the sleeves into the armscyes before sewing the bodice side seams and underarm sleeve seams all in one go. But it is very helpful to review these classic techniques, because some more "fiddley" garments do come together better with the classic techniques.
A few years ago, I gave away a sewing book which was all about sewing garments faster (pinless sewing, etc.). While someone else might benefit from these "fast" techniques (I understand that these are the techniques used in mass-market ready-to-wear), for me the book might as well have been titled "How to Waste Your Fabric and Time."

I also insert sleeves into a garment flat and will always do this in knit garment, shirts, or garments where the sleeve doesn't have a very high sleeve cap. Just enjoyed this video. I am bilingual, the word interlining is exactly what we say in Spanish lol, in USA they called it underlining. Loved hearing you say interlining. Your advise to use silk thread and needles was appreciated here. I have a silk fabric which has sat scaring me for over a year.

Great tutorial, but if you do not mind I would like to add an alternative, in regards to securing the facing to any seams (in this case it was the shoulder seams). Instead of hand sewing it or tacking it, you can stitch in the ditch of the shoulder seams, thus the stitch would not be seen. So, the facing remain flat, secure and safely intact. This is how I was taught. Just a suggestion.

I think I didn't do it here because the sleeves were already attached which makes it harder to grab enough of the seam allowance at the shoulders. However I really appreciate that you mentioned this. Hi! I've been watching all of your facing tutorials, and they're all amazing. You don't leave any detail unexplained. I was just wondering how to insert a facing to a dress that has a keyhole detail in the back, which closes with a hook and eye. Great job!
Hi Merel, the facing would probably go around the keyhole? Or you can finish the keyhole with binding instead? I can try and do a class on this. Aneka x

Best sewing tutorials! So thorough. I wonder if I can put the zip in after an all in one facing for a sleeveless dress or top? I am trying to avoid the contortionist sewing tricks involved (sewing shoulder seam after facing) that putting in the zip first would require. If I don't finish the back seam I can sew the all in one facing and pull the back sections through the shoulders to the front. Hope you understand my question.
Hi Emma, thank you for your lovely message. Yes you can complete the facing and then add the zip into the garment. I have a new tutorial coming next week that will show a neat way and professional finishing for sewing the top of the zipper, this might help too. Aneka x

just a question: what if we are sewing collars? won't it be very bulky with the facing?
Hi Janelle, you are too kind! Thank you for your lovely words. If you are attaching a collar to the neckline of a garment then you probably won't need to have a facing too. The collar will probably finish the seam allowances (inside the collar). But this does all depend on the design of the collar and garment. But most of the time you won't have a facing with a collar. Impressed by your tutorials!!! 🙌🙌Question, I'm about to sew a dress with lining. I wondering if I can do the same thing for the dress with lining!? I was thinking to (1) sew together main fabric on shoulders and sides (2) sew the lining on shoulders and sides (3) connect the lining with main on neck section (4) add zipper (5) attach sleeves Thank you! And question #2 do I need to add an interfacing to neck line on lining? I'm working with thin gentle fabrics(similar to chiffon, but thicker than chiffon) thank you!!!! 😊
Hi Maria, thank you for your lovely message and sorry for the delay in getting back to you. There are a couple of options when you have a dress with a lining, is the lining going to start at the edge of the neckline, or will there be a facing and then lining (attached to the bottom of the facing).
Depending on the garment and the fabric the construction can change. But I would say that generally you want to stitch the main fabric at the shoulders and sides. Insert the zipper. Attach the sleeves. The lining would also be sew completely with the sleeves introduced and then you would attach them both together at the neckline. You would stitch the lining to the garment zipper on the machine or by hand. Then complete the hems attaching the lining to the garment (this does depend on the garment). I hope this helps?
The method you have suggested would work, but the seam allowance of the sleeves wouldn't be hidden by the lining and the zip wouldn't be finished quite as neatly.

This is really useful, thanks! The first time I did this I really cocked it up, wish I'd looked up how to actually do it properly instead of guessing! Just a question - is it OK to leave the seam allowances in between the facing/top as they are? Do they fray? Or would you iron interfacing onto them?
Marsha .K so pleased I could help! Thank you for a lovely message. The seam allowances shouldn’t fray, or they might do a bit but once the facing is down and hiding the seam allowances they won’t have any movement or cause fraying. You can iron them, but it’s more important to press the facing in position from the facing side with a small amount of the front fabric visible on the top edge. I hope this helps? Aneka

Hi Aneka, thank you again for this very helpful tutorial ! I have a question re the finishing of the facing. Would top stitching the edge of the facing work ? I have a linen top where the facing bottom edge is top stitched (from the outside) and this give a nice band-like finishing. Unless this is another technique that is used but I very much like it and would want to try out. Thank you!

Do you know how to make patterns? I have found a dress I want to make, but I cannot find a pattern that resembles the top of the dress. You just do such a wonderful job at explaining and doing everything step by step for us beginner sewers.

Wow ie learnt so much watching this. I’ve literally only sewn two garments with a proper pattern and now can’t wait to start a new one with your help. Just a wee question can you recommend a pen/chalk for drawing on fabric, I’ve been on Amazon and so many and lots with bad reviews? Thank you once again 😀
Oh I am so pleased. Amazing news. I personally like the Chalk Pens (Clover Chaco) they last really well and you can purchase refills for the chalk. I use white most of the time as it comes off beautifully. I also use Black and sometimes Yellow, however the yellow nor black come off as well as the white. In terms of pens I generally stick with Clover as well, they are more expensive but most of their products are better. I like these because they have a very fine line when marking. But make sure you replace the lid, they seem to last ok as long as you replace the lid (which I have learned for forgetting to put it back on when filming). Thanks for this video! I was planning to use facing in my next sewing project so it came perfectly on time.
I particularly loved the close-ups of positioning the material before sewing (20:30). I've watched quite a few videos on how to sew a facing and yours was the most thorough.
There were just two things that would improve my reception of this video:
- I think that those video transitions with white screen are quite old school and unnecessary - a simple cut would be less distracting
- I felt that the speech pace was a bit too slow - even though I'm not a native speaker I watched you video on 1.25 speed
But still, it really was great :)

You have a very clear pronouciation and a lovely british accent which makes it quite easy to understand.
Speaking from experience, what helps way more than just slow speech pace is subtitles. Especially when you're still learning - it makes it easier to google the words you don't know.
But I do realize that preparing them takes a lot of extra work :)
