Aneka, thanks again and always for your simple yet detailed and clear tutorials. You really have no idea how many pieces of fabric ended up discarded or just remained unfinished because of that truing thing that I never heard from anyone except you. Thank you so much for being honest and loving to your audience xxx
This is immensely helpful! I often want to raise or lower the front or back neckline of a dress pattern to get more use out of it. Thanks again for all your very clear teaching!
Just been using this technique to copy a pattern from something I have. Used your tips and was very pleased with myself. Simple project but this video really helped.
Very appreciative of this well-explained tutorial! Many thanks!! I need to draft a facing for a self-drafted tunic made with woven fabric (the drafted tunic pattern being adapted from a knit crew neck t-shirt pattern). This is exactly the tutorial I needed to reference! 👍🏽💛
Vero clear and professional as usual. It’s almost like to attend one of your class lesson. I feel I’m learning so much from your tutorial. I can’t wait to watch the next one.
Thanks for this wonderful tutorial, this is the project I'm currently working on in school, and you've simplified for me, thanks once more I really appreciate
This is exactly what I've been looking for! I am a beginner and facing is the only way I can cope with necklines (I've tried hemming and binding, but always ends up puckered and horrible). I'm glad I found you! Thumbs up and subscribed! TFS xx
Thank you so much for this Aneka! I have made 2 Copen dresses so far with the v neck alternative. Please hurry up and release your patterns - I will certainly buy them!!!I love the Copen dress, it is very well drafted and easy to adapt too. Of course your wonderful tutorials make it so much easier to be experimental. I am really enjoying the whole series.😀
Sue, you are ever so kind. Thank you so much for your lovely words. I am so pleased you were able to follow along and make Copen with a V-Neck - fantastic. I am trying my best to get my patterns ready, I am going to take a working holiday next week so that I can ignore my emails and get on top of my new website and pattern launches. Thank you for your support. Aneka x
This video is very helpful! I would like to combine the front, back and sleeves for an all-in-one facing for a sleeveless blouse so I’m going to use these techniques. Thank you again for a very helpful video.
Hi Annika . Can you please explain why you draw the facings off the stitching lines and then add the seam allowance after please? Or anyone if you cld help please? 😊
I just want to lower the neckline on a pattern. Do you have a separate video for that? I don't know how to lower it first - just whatever amount I choose and then draft the facing? Edit: I have just watched the whole thing. As usual, beautifully explained.
@@MadetoSew I spent about three hours and gave up! I did manage the first part of drafting a new facing from your instructions, after watching someone's video about lowering the neckline . After that I couldn't do it because I didn't know what you do with the back. I read somewhere if you lower the neckline you won't necessarily need to do anything at the back. I still think I need to redraft the back facing but don't know how to make the necklines marry up .
@@dancetoday542 Hi Marilyn, that is correct, if you have just lowered the front neckline and not changed the position of the neckline at the shoulder then the back neck and facing will not change. Aneka x
Hi Aneka, your tutorials are amazing and so clear. Just a quick question with the notches that are added to the facings, you have added them to the sewing line, do I then move them onto the cutting line for when I cut out the fabric? Jayne x
You are wonderful. I feel more confident in drafting a facing for dress I'm making. If back neckline is a v neck like the front neckline will the facing pieces be similar?
Hi Wanda, it is always 'best practise' to do any changes to patterns, or pattern cutting with the seam allowances off, and then add them back on. You will see in this tutorial, that the seam allowance edge changes slightly because the neckline is favoured on the facing; it is 1/16" to 1/8" (2mm) smaller on the neck edge. Then the seam allowance is re-added. However please use your judgement here, you can by all means draw it with seam allowances added, I am just teaching the 'proper' way and then you can skip steps as required. Also when pattern drafting properly I wouldn't have seam allowances on my finished garment when I usually draft the facing. I would draft all the pieces with NO seam allowances and then add them. Does that help? Aneka x
Wanda Hopson I thought that and knew someone would have asked. I love the reply. Teach properly and then with that knowledge you can find your own way. TY
Thank you so much for this video, really interesting. I am just making a dress that is lined but I am choosing to make it without a lining with it being my first dress has I don't feel confident yet to tackle linings. There are no pattern pieces for doing a facing. So thank you for your lovely tutorial I will now be able to confidently add a facing :)
Great video! One question: How would you recommend drafting a facing for a top/dress with no sleeves? Would you create a facing that goes all the way down to the waist and included arm holes? And how does a facing look when there’s darts in the original pattern, do you have darts in facing too?
Hi Leilani, great question. I must make a video for an ‘all in one facing’; which faces the neck and the armholes. If you don’t have sleeves then the facing can face the armholes at the same time. I would take the facing about 3” (8cm) under the arms and make sure you curve back to the neck. Curved lines will make the facing less visible from the right side of the garment. I wouldn’t have any darts in a facing, I would remove them. As they will add bulk to the garment. Hope that helps? Aneka
Hi anika i don't have a pattern to work with is it possible for you to show measurements and draft a top pattern from scratch go back to basics? I'm now learning so this will help me a lot thank you very much
Hi Caroline, yes this is something I do plan to do. Otherwise if you want to follow along with these videos I am using this free pattern: www.madetosew.com/product/copen-shift-dress-top/ Thank you. Aneka
Hello. I'm making vintage Simplicity pattern 5549, View 1. I'm trying to follow the drafting facing tutorial for it but the V neck is different from the one you are using in your tutorial. The seam allowance line on the pattern goes further down past where the V neck stops. I'm not sure how to work that. Is it possible that you can give me guidance on how to draw this out? Your instructions are very clear and easy to follow. Just not sure how to do it with the pattern I'm using. Thank you!
Hi Sara, I tried to look up the pattern. Is it a wrap over V Neck? If so you would continue the facing the full length of the neckline edge, and the facing would join into the seam that attached the bodice to the skirt of the dress. Does that make sense? Feel free to email me a pic info@madetosew.com Aneka x
Not offended at all, I realise that I am not the right teacher for everyone. I am not here to gain followers but to help my students. Thank you for your feedback, I will try and do some shorter videos. 😊

Yes it can, but I would usually only use a facing like this for stable knits like ponte roma or double knit jersey. Hope this helps? Aneka
