    Solid video. Being in an OD response situation sucks. Being unsure of what to do in an OD situation really sucks.

    This is so important. I and two friends saved my partner's life when a miscalculated opiate prescription caused an overdose. Because of her high prescribed dosages, we have Narcan in the house, and we used it within a minute of when she slumped over and stopped breathing. She started breathing again almost immediately, and began groggily responding to "Can you hear me??" and shoulder shaking soon after. I've never heard a more beautiful sound.
    By the time the EMTs arrived, she was coherent enough to claim it was no big deal. We, the EMTs, and the ER staff all disagreed with her. 🙂
    Keep Narcan around if you can. Know exactly where it is and how to use it. Mentally rehearse making the quick decision to use it in an emergency. You can save a life by being prepared.

    I know some people who use the good ol’ sternal rub. Seems a little harsh to me but I guess in an emergency it works.

      That's what we were taught. I've done it to myself a few times so I know exactly how unpleasant it is. I've also heard from more experienced responders that yelling "Ok, I am about to administer Narcan!!" has gotten a response if they were just ignoring you because they were trying to enjoy their high. It's good to warn them so you aren't administering Narcan non-consensually to someone who is using opioids but not ODing.

    Curious- what are the hazards of overdoing naloxone accidentally? Like CPR you can break ribs, most life saving techniques have some risk- usually smaller than the hazard they save you from.

    • @basilspaghetti
      @basilspaghetti 12 дней назад

      You can't overdo it, it works by just blocking your opioid receptors. And if you give it to someone who isn't on opioids, it will also be fine - won't do anything. The only downside is that withdrawal symptoms from opioids are themselves unpleasant, but like you said, better than the hazard itself.
      One of the reasons you check if someone is actually ODing or just sleeping / drowsy is because if someone is doped up and having a little nap and you hit them with Narcan when they weren't in danger, they're just going to be sober, in withdrawal, and pissed off and it makes them distrust first responders and be more secretive about their use.

    Given that, according to my brother who runs a liquor store in Colorado, “The heroin is fentanyl, the cocaine is fentanyl, the meth is fentanyl, and the pot is probably NOT fentanyl!”, everyone needs to know how to save the life of someone who may well have just thought they were destroying their nasal septum! 😬

  •  21 день назад +1

    Wait, he is unresponsive but there is pulse and breathing. Why are we administering anything?

    • @sarah.s.flanagan
      @sarah.s.flanagan 20 дней назад +5

      Opioids slow a person's breathing so much that they die. The lack of response and slow breathing indicates an opioid overdose, and the nasal spray used here interferes with the opioids in the brain and can help restore breathing while help is on the way

      You are under no legal obligation to save lives if you don’t want to. However, in this glorious, free country in which we live, others have the absolute right to think poorly of you! 😒
