    I'm unemployed. Use my links to buy or Buy me a cup of coffee here: Paypal.me/beach... And: Don't do this, you'll kill yourself! ***I take no responsibility for what you do. This video is for informational purposes only.***. Mainly, be careful not to short a pack. I burned my fingers once when I shorted one by accident and it took 1-2 weeks to heal. Plus index and middle fingers get used a lot so a sore on the end sucks.
    Have to buy a new battery? Amazon has third party ones cheap: amzn.to/3uxa9qu

    Ebay Security Torx Set under $7 (This is my exact set I think) ebay.us/apAiCS
    The holes that you need to jumper say 'RST' (for reset) next to them, I believe.
    There are other videos that show you how to 'boost' or charge the battery manually with another pack or charger. This is NOT that, but BOTH may be required if the pack is at 0 volts AND the BMS (Battery Management System) has placed the pack into Safe Mode or Test Mode or whatever they call it.

    UPDATE: 1. I'm considering taking this video down and just doing the repair myself and selling the batteries I fix for more $$. No one hardly donates, despite saving $100 every time they save a battery. 2. *RUclips* is making money off these ads. NOT ME. Until I get to 1,000 subscribers, they keep it ALL. It's really unfair but you can help by using my links, making tiny donations, and at least clicking that "Subscribe" method. Your fix workd like a charm. I was on my 2nd Ryobi 40V battery, the first one died about 2 years ago. When the 2nd one died I was determined not to have to pay another $100 for a third battery. Your fix was simple and easily repeatable if I ever have the same problem. Ryobi should have a reset button on the exterior of the battery because this issue seems to be pretty common.

      I've considered soldering wires to the charge level button so that when you check the charge it also does a reset. Consider a donation of coffee money and maybe I'll make that video. :) paypal.me/beachfitrob and don't forget to subscribe because I might just do that. Thank you so much!! This is the ONLY video I have found on this model. I have the 5Ah 40v battery (OP40501). All of the other videos on RUclips are on a completely different model and they want me to do all kinds of mods. All that stuff on websites about using another battery to charge this bad one, or spending 30 minutes plugging it into the charger and then taking it back out just before the charger light starts to flash red/green...USELESS! When I found this and performed this simple reset, it worked perfectly and the pack is charging as I type. I sent you a little more than a cup of coffee bro, you just saved me $160.00 if I had bought a new one at Home Depot!

    • @Beachfitrob

      Thanks! I will say this: not ALL packs work properly again. One I had worked but then I had to reset it again to make it work....I may solder in an external contact set for that one. One worked fine thru one cycle so far. One I haven't tested again. Some reset but then still wont work. So, YMMV. But be sure to try it as so far, some work fine as far as I can tell. Pretty sure one of mine was just a thermal issue....too hot outside, heavy use...and went into safe mode. Texas in the summer. Tall weeds. Weedeater.

      So it sounds like the 5Ah is the same as the 4Ah basically.

    • @Beachfitrob
      @Beachfitrob 3 года назад

      Also, don't know if I mentioned it but I don't think the jump works here. If you jump it, and then hold a voltmeter on it, the voltage bleeds down rapidly. I think it's charging a small capacitor maybe? I think the other contacts control the pack. It's not a dumb pack by any means.

      @@Beachfitrob Yup, that's what it did! It would hold the 40 volts right after I tried to boost off a good pack, but when I put it in the charger, it would flash red/green. Then when I took it out and tested it again, it was at 3 volts. Ryobi did everything that could to get people to buy a new battery, when it's just a simple reset.

  • @SteveTraylor

    Reset worked!
    I left my trimmer out in the rain, causing all four lights to flash and the battery not work. But the.RST reset trick worked! I used a piece of solder wire bent in a U shape to reset it. Hardest part was getting the four screws out. I had to drill out the little center tip sticking up out of the middle of the hex head screws. I used a T15 bit. I just peeled the end label back instead of cutting it, and it stuck back down good as new. Thank you for the video. It saved me about $95 at HD.

    This is one of the best DYI videos I've ever watched. After looking a videos that used micro chargers and soldering and ramming the battery in and out of the charger, this took me about 5 minutes and worked perfectly. I suggest using INSULATED wire for this, so you don't have to worry about grounding, rather than solder wire! Probably only works on Rev Q batteries, but I believe that's the latest Ryobi is producing. BTW the plastic cap on the one screw is probably best removed with a precision flathead screwdriver.

    So only one comment. My battery was dead, dead, dead. The reset technique you described worked to wake the battery up, but there was no juice in the battery so as soon as I plugged in the charger, the 4 blinking lights popped back on. I remembered some other video that said to put a charge on the battery, use a fully charged battery and connect + on good battery to + on dead battery, and same with negatives. So I shorted RST pads again to wake the dead battery up, then I put + to + and - to -. Caution - if you do this, BE CAREFUL! My wires started getting really hot so I pulled them off until they cooled down and repeated about 4 more times. Now when I click the test button, I got a single LED to light up, telling me there was a small charge on the dead battery now. Reassembled dead battery, put it on the charger and there you go! So if Robert's technique doesn't work right away, maybe your battery is dead like mine was.

    • @RobertBullock
      @RobertBullock  2 года назад

      Disclaimer: this can be dangerous and cause burns or explosions etc. if you're not careful. Yes, it's basically unmetered power. In theory, infinite current. Small wires will get hot quick so a few seconds at a time just to bring the votlage up so the charger will 'see' it. That's why 0 volts never will work. Charger doesn't see it. Too low and it will refuse to charge as that can also be dangerous.

    My battery had the 4 flashing lights, so I threw it on a shelf where it sat for almost 2 years. I watched this video today and I can't believe it worked! Battery is charged and ready to go. I had to run to Lowes for a security bit set and then used a paperclip to reset. It only took a second for my lights to all come on and work again. Thanks for posting this video! This is helpful. I would like t add that I am stuck at a remote cabin, but have a set f small tor bits. I modified the approach by using a drill bit that is just jess than the shoulders of the Torx, and bit down into the reverse dome of the screw head. This allowed my ordinary Torx bit to sink deep enough to allow me to unscrew the Torx screw. It takes a lot of torque to do this. Also, the same drill but can make mince meat out of the plastic plug, giving me joy. So, if you are stuck without that specialty bit, try the drill technique.

    @dmc31405 2 года назад +1

    Hi Robert, Thanks for the tip. It worked, but I had to reset again after about 5 minutes of charging. I hope this won't keep being part of the process.
    The most difficult part was digging that dang plug out that was blocking the one Torx Head. I don't know why Ryobi doesn't have a reset button for this option, they are hemorrhaging millions of dollars over a stupid little detail. My 10 year old Rigid Cordless Drill Combo set has never done this before. I challenge everyone to send Robert $10.00. That seems like the least we can do for this useful tip.
    I may have jumped the gun on thinking that this fix solved my problem. Battery wont reach a full charge, I have reset it at least 10 times, voltage is at 35.5-36.5 . I did run the hedge trimmer for about 8-9 minutes, and came back in and put it on the charger. It started charging and repeated the same scenario again. Going to let the battery rest for a while, as it now charges for just a couple minutes and then back to green/red, green/red. I will update this post when I figure out more about what is going on.
    Robert have you got any suggestions?
    Ryobi is sending me another battery. So I haven't lost anything but some sweat equity at this point.

    • @RobertBullock
      @RobertBullock  2 года назад

      Yes I got a new battery too as mentioned elsewhere but mine was an overheat condition due to working outside.
      I’d consider soldering wires from RST to the battery gauge so it resets every time you check voltage maybe. Don’t blame me if this defeats an important safety feature but it should just fault out again is what I’d think.
      Def. Thanks so much for the donation!
      If the pack doesn’t work very long after a few cycles it’s still worth keeping for emergency power out USB device charging.
      If you have the charger with the USB port. I have with and without.

    • @dmc31405
      @dmc31405 2 года назад

      @@RobertBullock Thanks for the Reply. Good idea about soldering a jumper from the RST, to the check battery switch. I'm going to use/cycle the battery a few times and see what happens. It might recondition the battery if I use it. CS at Ryobi said that the replacement battery would be here in 10 days. I assume by then, I'll decide what to do with the old battery.

    I've got a different version of board here in Oz. But there is still a position marked as RST or reset. I think you need to put that pin to gnd. Best use a 1k resistor. Also I'm finding the MOSFETs used develop a high drain to source resistance in on state. Should be .004 ohm by data sheet but can raise to kilo ohms. Causing no go. Or very inefficient operation. I recommend checking and probably replacing MOSFETs anyway.

    • @RobertBullock
      @RobertBullock  2 года назад

      Beyond the scope of this video but interesting. Inefficiency probably doesn’t matter so much given a relatively short runtime.

    • @Swenser
      @Swenser 2 года назад

      @@RobertBullock by inefficiency here really means more than mild stuff but getting half the runtime of your lawnmower which can be frustrating .half the power going into feeding the Resistance across drain and source of the MOSFET switch. Because of the heat at mosfet the problem gets worse and puts strain on batteries and charger more and more until MOSFETs fail to allow operation and or batteries cid pops. The online ratings on Ryobi 36v batteries is quite poor and I'm wondering if bad choice of MOSFET is the general reason why .

    Note: one thing I am careful of is not to run the battery til it stops due to low voltage. I check and if it’s on the last bar I stop. I have a sense about when it’s due.

    Made the call to Ryobi on my OP40501 with the blinking red/green on the charger and 4 blinking green on the battery resulting in no charge. Ryobi took my info (easy) and told me that my battery (OP40501 - 5Ah battery) was currently on backorder, which they ordered for me, but they would be sending me a battery in stock right away. So I followed Robert's instructions and now have a battery that will take a charge with two replacement batteries on the way.

      Glad it worked! Send me a cup of coffee here (or more, maybe 1 cup per battery?) Paypal.me/beachfitrob and please Subscribe as I'm not even getting ad revenue. Yup. You read that right. $0. Read the pinned comment on this video. Need 1000 subs at min. But they still show you ads. I just don't get paid for it. Yay for us little creators. :STEAMY EARS EMOJI:

    This so cool man. I had noooo problem liking and subscribing! Fixed my battery instantly. Buuut I do have another 5ah battery that has a different board that you have. Can you tell us what you are actually jumping? Are they labeled to where I can find corresponding ones? The issue with mine is meter reads fully charged, and the charger doesn't charge it because it's "fully charged" but yet it's only putting out 17volts. Happened out of nowhere. :( Thanks!

    • @RobertBullock
      @RobertBullock  2 года назад

      Thanks man! As for that board, sounds like half of it died. The board is split into two sections, each putting out around 20 V. Follow the big traces and measure the two sides but BE CAREFUL. The curent will vaporize metal instantly, so it's very dangerous and can lead to 2nd degree burns, eye damage, etc.

      @@RobertBullock Well darn. It only would charge up to 2 bars. After mowing the yard till the battery died, it's back to the 4 flashing lights and won't charge. I guess I need a new battery.

    Sorry you are having RUclips troubles, I have tried the reset but after going from four blinking lights to one blinking light and right back to the red green flash. I am going to try charging to 30 V + and seeing if that helps. Power supply and voltage booster inbound. Just wanted you and others to know it may not end with the reset pad short method.

    Worked for me. Mine was out of warranty and Ryobi just told me to buy a new one. It wouldn't take much to add a small reset switch into the housing. Seems a little scammy on their part.

    • @RobertBullock
      @RobertBullock  3 года назад +1

      True, but not too hard to add your own. Could maybe just use some small screws soldered to a couple of wires that pass through the case. Maybe I should build a kit. :) Don't forget to Like and Subscribe and if you send me a cup of coffee at Paypal.me/beachfitrob then you're in about the 10% of people who do.

    Thanks for this! Was gifted a non-working Ryobi mower. Found issue to be battery defective at charger. Tried the 'jumpstart' method with new battery first - no dice. Found out that battery needed reset from this vid, but would only work for me with RST pins shorted as battery was being jumped. Probably due to extremely low voltage level battery was at. $230 mower for free!
    Also, if you don't want to cut through the sticker, it's easily pried-off with a razor blade and glue will still hold when put back together

    • @RobertBullock
      @RobertBullock  3 года назад
