Thank you so much for sharing this information. I called Mazda after I found out what the problem is. The fact that it’s as common as it is and affects as many of their vehicles, not just the cx5, it should have been a recall. Mazda should have stepped up to the plate and taken care of this. They have an internal memo related to this issue. At first Customer Service would not acknowledge it. He told me I’d have to take it in for a diagnostic. We are going to try and do it ourselves. My car is a 2013 cx5 GT. It only had 82K miles. This has been such an awesome car, up until this. Thank you and Isabella for all your help.🥰 She’s a cutie!
I literally just did this in 23 minutes hungover from a long night of drinking after being out on the water all day. It took me more time to watch this video and gather my tools up in preparation to do it than to actually take out the old one and put in the new one. The entire center console does not need to be removed, the spring didn't pop out, and you don't need to move the shifter from park the entire time. I'm not a mechanic but have always worked on little things like this on my own car. There's a 4 minute video on this same topic that shows the easy way to do it as I described above. Either way if you watch this one or that one you'll be able to do this quick repair if you have any type of mechanical ability. Thanks for the quick tutorial and clear video.
@@philosop.HER_ it’s super easy. Saved a bunch of money by just buying the part and replacing it myself. We bought this car new and it now has 80K miles and this is the first “problem” we had with it. These Mazda’s are rock solid.
Thank you very much. I got the part this week but the other videos didn’t show me details like disconnecting the connections in center console. This helps me a lot when I attempt.
Thank you so much! I just replaced it myself in about 20 minutes. Your details helped tremendously! And you're right, as Americans we step up.to the plate! Many blessings!
Just one thing to add would be to show the tab to get out the actual switch out. Took me a little bit to figure out why it wasn't coming out at first but eventually found it. Overall awesome video! I didn't take the whole console off, just slid it back, but I assume it's more roomie if you remove it. Thank you so much! Didn't take long and saved me hundreds.
Thank you @gasman. It’s done ✅. The dealer was asking for $700. I’m not super handy, just be patient and watch the instructions carefully. Thanks again 🙏🏼!
Very good video. Thanks! Can't believe Mazda doesn't choose to fix this. I'd hardly describe myself as a car person, so a few additional tips for others in a similar situation: (a) Sounds obvious but work with a lot of light if you can (I worked in a garage since it was cold but it was hard to see); (b) I found it easier to navigate by completely removing the piece shown at 5:38 (so loosen both sides); (c) You can test the installation and the shifter before you put things totally back together since the car can still start. I found this helpful when fixing mistakes I inadvertently made.
Thanks for the video! Great step-by-step details! Saved me a bunch of money! I didn't even need a third hand. :-) This problem was getting worse and worse as time went by and seemed to be worse when it was hot. I have a 2013 CX-5 w/ 103K miles.
Probably be a good idea to put a towel under you when you pull the little spring out on the off chance it drops and falls so you dont lose it. Good video I likely will have to at some point change this out or modify it to work better.
Thank you kind sir !!! You save me and countess others $$$ - thank you , thank you Ps thanks for being to the point and not wasting time talking like other videos do
I fabricated a harder piece of plastic to go over that rubber switch. Spent maybe 15 minutes making it. Saved me 70 bucks and works great no issues after 2 years
Just replaced the same switch and never needed to remove the entire center console. Just remove the 2 screws by the rear seats and all you need to do is jiggle it a little to the back to make enough room. More than enough clearance to remove the screws that hold the switch in place. Only took 15 minutes to install and reassemble.
Meanwhile... Before you turn off the car, with the shift knob in the park position: push it to the left, hold it, and then press the start button... You're welcome 😉
My 2017 cx5 is doing the same thing took it in a few weeks ago they told me it was the battery so I got the battery replaced n just lastnight it did the same thing have to take it in tomorrow see what they say. But since I watched this video ill tell them what the damn issue is.
Okay, I tried this and it didn't work. The problem is now much worse in that nothing shuts off even when i put in park etc. I think the problem is the piece with the metal spring. I don't think I put it in correctly, and I have now reassembled it all. Ugh! Any more detailed tips on where the metal spring piece should go? I've watched and rewatched to no avail. The flap moved up and down like you showed in the vid.
Then change the etire part, the new items comes with better material to fix and avoid this thing, for a mazda cx-2013 this is the part, Automatic Shifter Switch KDY046040, you can buy it on Ebay.
Has anyone had this same problem as well as battery drain? I've had this same issue for 3 years now and now, I'm having issues with the battery staying charged.

What is the type of switch called here
Thanks for the help! Definitely nicer to see how it actually comes apart vs the factory diagram!

Thank you for the very informative video. Were you able to see if anything changed with the newer part? Mazda says that the material was upgraded.
a successful fix
A lot more details I added a link to your video to mine.
This was overly complicated and demonstrated poor use of the wrong tools. There is no reason to remove the entire center console.
Why took the whole thing , I just moved backwards. Thanks!
thanks for sharing .
i will never buy a mazda again so many people had this problem and no recall
never again will i own another mazda
Its not the biggest issue in the world its really the only problem this car has and it can be fixed for $50
@@markg999 youre right but for a 50$ piece why not do a recall

What is common name of the switch?
Nice video. I lost the little spring from the lockout lever. where did you get a new one and does it really need to be replaced?
Thanks!
ebay I reccomend replacing it
