Great video Ken! I wasn't sold on the roads until you did the alcohol and India ink. That's how I always did my plaster roads. I think I'll be trying this out. Thanks again,

Cool vid Ken! I use joint compound for my cement modeling. It cracks a bunch but just come back and add a bit more and it looks great. Cheers, Dan

Ken, it was a great idea to reprise this video. I was interested to learn about the concrete patch product, as I would never had expected it to be as flexible when cured as it is. Looks like the time involved is well invested.

Really great tutorial, but one thing I noticed, on a two lane bi-directional road system the skips should be yellow, not white. only time the skips are white is if the direction of traffic are the same. everything else was very useful information and I thank you for some really good ideas. I'm also in the process of placing some roads in my layout and will try the concrete patch instead of the joint compound. That works too but when dry is very brittle and tends to crack. Thank You

I like to just do them on the foam base of the layout. Don't need any patch or anything like that, just acrylic paint, a xacto knife, and some chalks.

Ok, this is the second episode of what’s neat I’ve watched. The first was the episode the visit the Colorado Model Railroad museum. Although I found the computer controlled stuff interesting I found the host to be, well, annoying. I had almost wrote of this channel because of that, but I gave it a second try with this video. Glad I did, this production was much better and the same guy that was annoying before was completely different in this episode. The how to segment was worth the price of admission and I’ll look to see what’s next. Good job on the video, keep up the solid work.

I wonder if the Concrete Patch method would work for 1950s city streets? I think in the 50s most city streets were concrete. I did make a master for sidewalks and curbs so I can cast those in resin or Hydrocal.

Here's the thing - you don't over-do it. When you start getting super realistic (expialidocioucs) then the eye comes to expect the whole thing to be super realistic, which it can't be therefore your eye "kind of" catches that something isn't right. You have a good balance here, which is something to keep in mind.

That's a great technique for making roads. I've used the same one before on my layout. But let me ask you: Why did you seal the cracks? I left them on my layout and even accentuated some of them as they made it look a bit more realistic (roads around here are not that smooth).

Sharpie paint markers' quality have seemingly declined over the last few years, often releasing puddles of paint all at once. However, Michaels sells a brand of paint markers called Posca that work really well, and they are available in an array of colors with various sized tips. The large size has a tip between 1.8 - 2.5 mm, the medium has a tip 0.9 - 1.3 mm, and the small has a tip of 0.7 mm. If you want paint markers to paint road markings, or any other finely detailed images, or to use with small templates, give Posca paint markers a try . . . just make sure you grab the right color for some of them are not color-coded that well.

So it sounds like you like this better than something like drywall compound because this stuff isn't as brittle, is that right? Thanks! (I have used drywall mud before, and like everything about it except how easily it cracks and the dust it creates if you end up needing to sand it)

i think im gonna choose this concrete for my next crossing project instead of using woodland scenics "smooth it"?????... the smooth it is a little "gummy" and doesn't smooth out as well as the concrete in the vid appears to.. also the smooth it doesn't nave the natural "concrete road" color... nice vid
