ah, so i wasn't the only one wishing that. good to know. i was having a hard time following some of what was happening because it seemed to be flying by too fast.
Man, 2016 was a rough year for baseball. We lost Jose Fernandez to a boating accident, and David Ortiz, Prince Fielder, and Vin Scully retired. At least the Cubs broke their curse.
In order: -David Ortiz was one of the most feared sluggers in the league. I can't think of too many players loved by a team as much as Ortiz was by the Red Sox. That's his final game. -Jose Fernandez was a terrific young pitcher in his fourth season, whose life was cut short in a boating accident. The first man shown walking back and hugging everyone was his friend Dee Gordon, not a power guy, but who hit a home run the first game after the death in his first at bat of the game. -The man hugging his dad is Trevor Williams. This was his MLB debut, and he got the win. A very sweet moment with him and his father. -Prince Fielder, in the neck brace, was a really good slugger for many years. Two neck surgeries ended his career early, and that was the press conference announcing his retirement (it's worth noting he finished his career with the same number of home runs as his father, Cecil, with 319.) -Albert Almora accidentally hit a young girl in the stands with a foul ball. Obviously a very emotional time, and I believe he left the game. Sadly, the girl suffered a permanent brain injury. -Derek Jeter was a God in New York, where I'm from. Growing up, there were two options for favorite players in NY, David Wright and Derek Jeter. If you were a couple years older than me, it was Mike Piazza or Derek Jeter. This was Jeter's last at bat in Yankee Stadium, where he drove in the winning run. -Wilmer Flores was a fan favorite on the Mets who had spent the last 10 or so years of his life in the Mets system, ever since he was a teenager. Rumors floated around that he might be traded, and he learned during the game, in this age of social media, along with everyone else int he stands, who cheered for the player they loved. He turned out to not be traded that year, but some time later. -Ramon Ortiz blew out his arm early in a game, and was crying because he feared it may end his long career. -Mariano Rivera is the greatest closing pitcher of all time, no doubt. In his last game ever, he was taken out by Derek Jeter and Andy Pettitte, two of his closest teammates who had played with him since 1995 (this game was in 2013.) -Armando Galarraga was one out away from a perfect game, and the 27th out should have been called, as the runner was out by a full step, but first base umpire Jim Joyce called him safe. After the game, he saw he got the call wrong and became incredibly emotional, since he had robbed a kid of history. This was at the game the next day where Galarraga presented Joyce with the lineup card, Joyce with tears in his eyes. -Tony Womack's father had died three weeks earlier. Tony Womack almost never hit home runs. But on his first father's day without his dad, he hit the father of all home runs - a grand slam. -David Ortiz is crying at a pregame tribute to the aforementioned Jose Fernandez. -Joe Mauer was an excellent catcher for the Minnesota Twins who later moved to first base. There had been rumors that he would retire, which were all but made official when moved to catcher for one pitch and was then taken out of the game. It was his final game. -Yordano Ventura was a pitcher for the Kansas City Royals. In the offseason before the 2017 season, he was killed in a car crash. The ACE 30 honors him, and the players wore a patch that said that for the 2017 season. -A girl crying because she met her favorite player, Carlos Gomez. -Mike Trout, the best player in the game, being the cool dude he is and singing for some kids, one of whom becomes very emotional. -Michael Lorenzen had lost his father, and changed the song for when he's warming up to his dad's favorite. -Pat Neshek's newborn son died 23 hours after birth. He looked at the sky and pointed to the patch the team wore in his memory. -That is Salvador Perez, catcher for the KC Royals, hugging Yordano Ventura's mom after she threw out the first pitch early in the 2017 season. -A postseason home run by the St. Louis Cardinals' Oscar Taveras, who would die in a car crash just two weeks after the game. -Legendary Dodgers announcer Vin Scully ending his final broadcast at the end of the 2016 season. He had been the voice of the Dodgers since 1950. -Michael Lorenzen hitting a home run in what I believe is the same game as mentioned earlier. -Bryce Harper's last game for the Washington Nationals before his trade to the Philadelphia Phillies. Kind of a tool, but a very talented player whose legacy in Washington borders on admiration and infamy. -George Brett, one of the all-time great third basemen, hitting his 3,154th and final hit. He would be a first ballot hall of famer with 98.2% of the vote. -David Wright, one of the most beloved Mets of all time, finishing his career after not having played for most of the previous two seasons due to spinal stenosis. -Nelson Cruz, I believe exiting his final game for the Mariners, where he had become a fan favorite. -I believe that is Colorado Rockies great Todd Helton taking his final at bat in a marvelous career, all spent with the Rockies. -Cal Ripken Jr., a man synonymous with the term "beloved" at his final game. -Adam Jones leaving the Orioles after 11 years as one of their top players. -Victor Martinez retiring for the Detroit Tigers, where he had spent seven years and experienced a career resurgence. -Jose Reyes, a wife beater who masquerades as a speedy infielder, leaving the Mets. -Hunter Pence in his last game for the San Francisco Giants, where he had become a fan favorite.
Vladimir Lopez coke head or not, he showed passion and good attitude on the field which made him so loved by everyone and to hear that he was gone hurt all of baseball
It always hit close to home when a player from your favorite team dies unexpectedly. As a Yankee fan, the death of Thurman Munson was huge to me. Even bigger than that, and one that rocked all baseball fans, was the death of Roberto Clemente. Most of us have seen video of Lou Gehrig's farewell speech but weren't there to have appreciated his greatness and how much of a loss his retirement was considering the circumstances.
6:30 RIP VIN!!! I hope you’re chatting it up with Red, Jackie, and everyone. From a Red Sox fan of today, thank you for all of the baseball from yesterday and know that all of the baseball tomorrow will be in your honor. ❤️
I grew up watching almost every Derek Jeter game , i was 4 years when I first saw him play. Seeing him retire made me feel like I lost so much. Wouldn’t trade the memories for anything
If you could find video of Geoff Jenkins last game as a Brewer it was a tear jerker for the fans. He was given a standing ovation every at bat. The coach pulled him early to give the fans a last chance to show their appreciation for a class player that was one of the only highlights in years of bad teams. Not a dry eye in the house. The guy was so humble the players had to push him out of the dugout for a curtain call.
Todd Hilton’s last game was so powerful, the three second clip y’all put in was pointless. He was given a horse, had his number retired, and was given a standing ovation by everyone, including the opposing team.
Good idea, terrible execution. With so little context given in the cuts, I can't even tell what's happening most of the time. I have a vague understanding of most of them, since I follow baseball pretty hard, but this was honestly edited pretty poorly.
What about when Ichiro Suzuki broke the world record for the most hits in one season? My family and I watched that game from home, and I tell ya, there was not a silent household in my entire neighborhood when he made that 250th hit at Safeco Field. I mean, people were shooting off fireworks!! 😂 Whoo! That was fun!!
I live in the Kansas City area and still remember my friend telling me about Yordano Ventura’s death. Dude was a key part of our World Series runs (including the year we won it all); it was a horribly sad day for KC sports fans.
I’m a HUGE Red Sox fan and obviously don’t like the Yankees(lol) but I have nothing but respect and admiration for Derek Jeter, he was and is a class act.
Agreed Kyle and for those that don’t know what happened there should be some description or explanation to what happened, not everyone knows the full stories
Wait, that's the part of the Michael Lorenzen clip that we went with? I mean, it's good, but Lorenzen hit a bomb that game and couldn't hold back the tears as he made it to the dugout.
I can’t believe you left out Dee Gordon hitting that homerun after taking a pitch from the right side. That was the greatest moment to ever happen in sports and you left it out.
Great Thanks to Timothy C. for describing all the events shown in the video (see comments). Please post this info in the description of the video. He’s already done the work of describing things. Thanks!
