DESCRIPTION:
Do you know the difference between Moustache and Mustache? Is there one?
This conversation came up at the Live Bearded office so we thought we'd share it with you guys.
Technically speaking, moustache and mustache are two different spellings of the same word to describe the hair on your upper lip.
Moustache comes from the UK where British English is a bit more proper and they put an "o" in it.
In the US the term mustache is much more common.
Ultimately they both are the same so feel free to toss out moustache from time to time as you'll feel like mixing it up throw it out there and see how it feels!
In the UK they also like to refer to a mustache as mustachio, which instantly makes you feel a little more suave.
AND, if your mustache is really impressive, they refer to it in the plural form, Mustachios!!! I personally appreciate it.
Now when it comes to having a mustache, you really need to know how to style and trim it to keep it looking good, and to make eating and drinking manageable.
The first thing you'll realize is that you need mustache wax at all times. There is nothing worse than having a glorious mustache and not having mustache wax nearby.
If you are going for a handlebar mustache, apply from the middle and work your way to the ends. As you do, roll your finger and your thumb as if you're snapping to train the hairs to grow out and up.
After you style, there are 3 areas you need to trim to really style your mustache nicely.
The area at your upper lip: this area is what makes it extremely difficult to eat and drink so I personally trim it down a bit to get some clearance.
Take your beard trimmers or scissors and trim a straight line across your mouth to the length you desire. I recommend keeping this trim to the width of your nose or so as you don't want to go too wide. The hairs towards the outside of your mustache will need to be longer to give you a nice shape.
The ends: The ends need to be even, so take your scissors and do your best to even them out. Don't go back and forth too many times or you'll end up with a very short stache.
The separation: This may be the most important trim area. You want to trim the beard hairs under your mustache shorter so your mustache is separated from your beard and really stands out! You can do this with a beard trimmer or scissors.

Been growing the stache for about a year and these tips have come in clutch during that process. Keep growing brothers 🧔🏻
We're always here for ya bro! Thanks for the kind words, keep at it!
Great informational video. Stache is on point as always! I may need to grow mine back out.
Thanks brother! We'll never turn down another great stache in the world.
Great video, just running into this problem with my first beard now.
I don't know where your getting your info but they do not say moo-stache, moustachio or moustachios in the UK😅
Great video. Thank you for the information. You have such an amazing look.
We're always here to help bro! Thanks for stopping by.
Im not English I'm Irish but I know a lot of English, I have been to England a lot, I am related to a lot of English and I have NEVER heard anyone say Mous-tashe
Great ideas, sir. Thank you.
absolutely my man, we're always here to support you however we can!
Great tutorial, and your mustache is looking on point, as always
🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 thanks for the kind words bro!
Once again great info just when I needed it to separate my “Stache” from my beard. Thanks Brother!!!!
You bet! We're always here to help. Thanks for stopping by bro!
The video quality is perfect, very easy to see what you’re talking about
🤜🏻💥🤛🏻
Thanks for the vid, it answered some questions for me. I haven't trimmed my stache in over five months as I want to be moustachioed and it's currently over one inch past my lower lip. I have learned to take smaller bites and I don't eat the stache too often. The under the stache at the corners of my mouth trim is something I'm definitely going to do.
Hey bro! Be sure to check out the rest of Spencer's mustache trim videos and they may help you get your mustachioed look that you're going for! Thanks for stopping by!
Great video Spencer, one of these days when I grow up. I will have a stach just like yours! Living bearded forever! Oohrah
#LiveBearded4Life
I like the camera angle you used. Easy to see. I am about four weeks into the handlebar after keeping a short beard for a while. The separation of beard to stache is what I have been looking for along with trimming. I actually get stache hair stuck in my teeth while eating! ouch! thanks!
We have been there brother! It doesnt tickle haha But we are glad this helped you. Thanks for watching!
Great to be back guys. I shaved everything off cause my skin was red and flaky. Proud to have the beard and Mustache again and know how to take take of it. Second issue I had was the Mustache and finally know how to take care of it. You guys ever in Dallas, give me a call and I would love to meet you. Take care and keep it up. Go Army.
Hey brother, great to have you back in the beard ranks! We don't have any plans of coming to the big D anytime soon, but we are hosting a Live Bearded meet up here in Phoenix scheduled for March. You can see the event page on our Facebook for more info!
Great! Appreciated. (I need to get this to my barber.)
I'm trying to grow the handlebar mustache, videos help out alot
Keep at it bro!
Specially in french (Moustache).
Can confirm we both pronounce it the same. It’s just a different spelling. Like colour/color.
Thanks for the confirmation brother🤘
Congratulations from Brazil.💈🇧🇷👏👏👏
🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Olla live bearded.. i also like a shorter moustache.. above the lip. But the sides i like blended into the beard.. how do i fade or trim the moustache shorter with out messing it up & still lookin good ? .. ty

kiss from Greece!!!!
I'm also going for the longhorn type of handlebar but have skitzo hairs that are difficult to keep in the bundle and even though that mostly cooperate tend to want to jet out different directions toward the end. Any tips for dealing with this?
Hey brother, if there are a lot of those, you can tame them with a product that has lots of hold, otherwise we recommend styling the beard and mustache and then trimming the stragglers. Hope this helps!
Great vid.
I'm also a brit and as a Londoner definitely say 'tache (rather than stache) and pronounce it Ma-starsh :)
Love it bro! Isn't it awesome how beards and mustaches can bring us all together?!
@@livebearded sure is my friend. Who'd have thought having facial hair would be such a bonding thing? I've had a beard of some sorts for over 20 years and it's a who;e different world thanks to online communities and social media. A genuinely good thing about social media!
That's awesome bro! In a world full of negativity, it's really cool to be able to come together!
Being a Brit I’ve always called it a Moustache - pronounced “Mus-tosh”
WillMac yeah man I definitely think I butchered it a bit! My bad brother!
Also from uk(Manchester), maybe a regional thing but around here it's pronounced mush-stash.
Same here, but I am as common as muck.
I've always had a fairly neat circular beard and mustache. I'm now growing a full beard and I want to try to grow a handlebar having never had one before. Is there a particular point along the moustache where you let the hair grow longer to achieve the handlebars? I can see that you seem to have the hair brushed down and shorter above a portion of your lip but I'm not sure where you start to grow the longer ones. Thanks!
Hey brother, great question! You can actually find on our channel tips and advice on all of the above in a variety of videos that Spencer has shared. From trimming, separating the beard from your stache (which gives it the look of sitting on top of your beard) to curling the ends and maintenance. Give our channel a look or check out our blog on www.livebearded.com and you'll find everything you're looking for!
Thanks, I've subscribed and will check out your website!
Does anyone know of a way to get a sample of this Moustache wax? Anyone...? I am VERY interested!! (VERY) chris

Great beard man....and those arms..beautiful
💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
Is there anything wrong with keeping the moustache part short and trimmed above the lip? It really annoys me when the stache gets a little longer and the hairs want to go into my mouth.
Nothing wrong at all brother. It's all preference in how you want to wear it, because it's your beard and you should rock it with pride!
As a CANADIAN we also call it MOUSTACHE ,and in Greek
"MOUSTAKI" . I think it sounds cute in Greek
And moussaka is delish, too, hahahaha!
Another great video, but what about us guys who are trying/growing a moustache into what you have? There are plenty of "now you're moustache is established, how to maintain it", but what about, "you have a caterpillar crawling into your mouth and want to start to tame/shape it proper"?
Hey bro, rules of thumb is to let it go. Spence has ample amounts of stache videos in our channel and the blog on our website for this. Starts with letting it go for a few months, only trimming the lip area. Then you have to seperate the mustache from the beard (tutorials on our channel also) and then you start to train the handle bar. Give the channel a look bro! Let us know if there's any other way we can help.
I don't know if it's my facial hair type, or the wax that I'm using, or something wrong with my technique, but I can never wax my stache without pulling out a few hairs. Every. Damn. Time. Is this a common problem or should I be doing something differently?
This is pretty common bro. Just be sure you aren't putting too much wax on there and you aren't pulling too hard and you should be A-Ok 💪🏻
It's normal to lose hairs occasionally. If you're using a comb you might want to check the teeth aren't too close together for the thickness of your hair. I can't use a Kent comb because it just takes all the wax straight off.
Hey! What product did you use for your hair for this video?! 😃
I think he actually used a little bit of beard butter for that look!
@@livebearded his hair looks really amazing!
How frequently do you trim? Mine grows into my mouth and food after around 1.5 - 2 weeks, but I originally wanted to wait longer
Initially for the beard from stubble we suggest 4 months with no trimming at all, only cleaning up your neck and cheek lines. Every 2-3 weeks is a good trimming point for the mustache, depending on the look you're going for. You can check out Spencer's mustache tips and tricks on our channel. He has a few really good videos on hiw he maintains his look!
@@livebearded I'm already close to handlebar style, so I got the pain period behind me. I will see if 2 weeks is okay for me.
Did you seperate your stache from the beard?
@@livebearded I am still unsure if should run a handlebar or "normal". Will probably try the former soon and then I will do the separation.
Let us know how it goes bro!
Moustashe is a french word... i am growing out a moustache myself, i like one, like yours...
💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻 Thanks for stopping by brother!
Hello Live Bearded, I have have had a short tidy beard for more than 40 years. However, after growing my moustache these past 3 months no matter what approved products are on it, will not stay in place. Any tips to ensure that it does not move and fall back down ???
Have you tried our mustache wax? That is what Spencer here uses and as you can see, it works nicely!
Live Bearded Yes I have, hence my question...
Try hitting it with a blow dryer after you apply it. Also, using our butter as a base helps as well.
Putting a trimmer up to this mustacheö must is Stressful. Full concentration
It becomes like muscle memory after awhile, but yeah it's still a little unnerving 😆
How about "hair on my lip"???
What is your beard lenght brother ??
Spencer's beard is about 6 inches from the bottom lip to the bottom of the beard.
thanks brother
Mostacho or bigote in Spanish
It's a tash!
💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
You are wolverine and chuck Norris at the same time
Being a Brit we spell it moustache but it’s pronounced mustache. The difference is only in the spelling same as USA call an aeroplane an airplane
Killer feedback brother! Thanks for the knowledge!
In Pakistan we call it mooch
Im American and I always Spell it moustache but pronounce it “mustache”
Hey Spence - a Brit here - you're probably gonna get this comment a lot - we spell the word "moustache" but we pronounce the word roughly the same as you guys - maybe more like a really short 'u' sound. We definitely don't say "moostache"!
Awesome video, great tips anyway.
Saved me saying it.
Yes, stop butchering our language! Bloody yanks.......😆😉
Hahaha by bad guys! I swear I tried to pronounce it properly 🙈
@@livebearded you're forgiven 😉
@@beardedsparks2825 You are far too kind!!!
As an Englishman I can tell you moustache is pronounced the same as mustache just spelt different. Like gaol is pronounced the same as jail....
I just realized I snap the wrong way around.
The more you know 💪🏻💪🏻
From the Greek, “mystax; gen. mystakos; acc. mystaka.
Thanks for the knowledge bomb bro!
- No worries; great channel - just subscribed!
This is incorrect. the big difference in UK (and Australia and NZ) is that, if the pronunciation is different, the emphasis is on the second syllable.
Muh-STAHSH
Thanks for your input brother!
I'm french, the Moustache is typical French, it's MOUstache.
Actually us Brits don't pronounce the word the same as you. The difference is in the second syllable, not the first i.e. 'stache'. Most Brits pronounce that as "starche", so we would say 'muh-starche'. Some folks here actually say 'muh-stosh',. We have a lot of different accents/dialects in the UK, so I'm sure others will give their versions.
I am not worthy, I am not worthy! I swear I tried Lol. My bad for butchering it my man!!
@@livebearded No worries, just trying to edumacate 😆
I work in a hospital, and currently during this pandemic crap I've just been rocking a killer stache since it doesn't interfere with mask requirements as my normal beard does. However I can't do the whole handlebar thing as that wouldn't fit the requirements, so it's more of a Tom Sellick look.
Yeeeeah, Brit here. Just no.
If you come over here and say MOOstache you'll look like an idiot.
If you were told any of this seriously, it was a troll. Apparently we spell it a little different, that's essentially the only difference.
Nobody fkn pronounces Moustache as mooooostash wtf
