Handlebar wearer for 3 years. My advice is: never trim wet. Or with wax. Just comb it and trim the ends dry. If you do it wet or waxed. You’ll find that you’ll cut too much. But find out for yourself if you’ll like
I think this just varies based on your beard. I have a lot of density by my stache and if I don't wax it first it's near impossible to know how I'm trimming it. Styling first helps me a lot and I never feel like I'm trimming too much off
Thank you so much for all the content you make about beard styling tips. I've been super nervous to trim my beard/stache, but having watched videos you've made over and over has definitely given me the confidence to style and cut my own beard. Again, thank you! You guys at Live Bearded are awesome
I have been wanting to have a handlebar for a long time, My barbers I have went to since growing my beard have all failed in getting this right. Well guess what I'm doing tonight. Yup following this advice! Thanks Spence you rock man. and LOVE your products!!!! 1880 FTW!

Man I’m glad I found your channel.. I’ve finally been committed to a full beard with a handlebar mustache.. I’m a guy that usually likes to pull off the stubble look but sometime I would get lazy an not trim/shave for like 2 or even 3 months an my beard would start to grow long an eventually look like crap bc I didn’t know how to maintain an ect.. I’m pushing 5 months now since I last shaved my face an my mustache I would always trim my lip line but this time I haven’t but now I need to go an do some Maintenance bc my mustache is getting so long that when I drink or eat it gets in the way an I constantly comb it an carry a comb with me bc I didn’t know about the wax.. also in different video I seen your morning routine so may I ask where you get all your stuff for that an trimmers an scissors because I’m dedicated to growing this beard out.. this is the longest I’ve had it since 09 but back in 09 I kept my mustache trimmed an not long to where it will grow into a handlebar style so I’m excited.. also I have very long hair but keep it pulled back 👍🏻 thank you for your time on these videos bc I was never taught how to shave or anything lol I just did it on my own an why I would usually do stubble bc it was easy but at the same time hate having a clean shaven face
Man I appreciate this video. My handlebar has been good so far until the beard hairs underneath have blended in and got really annoying. Glad I found this trim video. Gonna try and do some trimming tomorrow.
Yeah bro! We have a ton of mustache maintenance videos. Be sure to watch Spencer talk about separating the stash! It makes all the difference. Let us know if there is any other way we can support you!
I just wanna say THANK YOU for the profile shot and side shot comparison. Its like you're 3D modeling in Maya/Blender/Zbrush and switching perspectives and it really gives off exactly what your trying to do. U earned my sub for that
Such good advice. My moustache looks great sitting on top of my beard following these steps. Just bought my first batch of Live bearded products yesterday and am impressed with the all round experience. Keep up the good work lads, from Australia
2 years is solid bro, Happy to help you out on that journey! Feel free to let us know if you have any questions regarding beard care and we'll be more than happy to help a brother out! ✌️
That looks like a good wax. What kind is it? I can't seem to find a good one, the ones I buy just look like glue in the stache. Unless I'm doing it wrong.
Excellent advice for my mustache, thank you. Styling before hand and tools for it helped a lot. Patience and focus is a lost art, so adding it to the self grooming process is an excellent reminder.
You’ve got one of the best beard/handlebar mustaches I’ve ever seen…definitely in the top 5. I just started my beard 11 weeks ago and, I’m going to give the handlebar a try in the next couple of weeks.
I did the whole width of the nose thing and saw how asymmetrical my mustache was. Now I'm using wax instead of Pomade and my mustache has never looked better. This sounds like a paid ad when I read it back but it's not. I am having trouble with general symmetry and rogue hairs along the perimeter. Any help with that other than just plucking them?
Spencer !! Firstly you have a great beard and a perfect handlebar stache !! I'm In the process of growing the similar beard and and a handlebar just like you...I have seen many videos but your videos are simply best brother !! Let's live bearded !! Veer here from India.
I took his advice to trim the center but that was a mistake just let them grow out so eventually they will all be the same length, then trim, not before! Another reason for this is you’ll never coral the trimmed hairs and they will wreck your stash like young hairs with the old. This is hard to do and will take months but once they’re all even with no more short hairs, perfect!
Oh man, that is the best when you get compliments on the handlebar mustache! Truly shows that the time it takes is worth it! We appreciate your support!
This is the first time in my 56 yrs I've tried growing handlebars. Received a lot of advice from friends and they were all wrong. I was told to NEVER trim!!! Because I haven't, the growth in the middle is driving me nuts because it doesn't want to bend to my will/wax, I have considered giving up, until this video. Thanks!!! Will attempt to trim.
Retired now (finally) and living bearded! I received my first living bearded Christmas gift from my family! AWESOME, what a great assortment of goodies! Merry Christmas brother and I will be living bearded! Semper Fidelis, God bless America!
Live Bearded, thank you my bearded brother! I have seen several videos on beard and stach grooming. But yours are the best, I am modeling mine after yours! God bless and love bearded forever! Semper Fidelis
Great tips, thank you! I had a good handlebar going then I made the mistake of trimming too wide above the lip and my handlebars are thin now. Would you recommend trimming those back, equal with the rest, so all the hairs can grow out again together?
Great advice on the mustache! I've been growing my mustache out for several times, but I always seem to be trimming it down too far to the outside of the lip. I've decide to not do that anymore and keep it short and neat. Though, your advice could help me reach the actual handlebar level. I've seen my mustache ends grow into my beard every single time as well, so I will surely try to shorten the hairs around the tips to see how that turns out. Next to that I have decided to grow out my beard to double the length, currently it's about the 4 month length. I'm growing out all of it, and a short and neat mustache just doesn't go with that to balance it out.
Do you trim the hairs high up on your cheeks to fade it a little and then let the lower (to your jaw) hairs make the length? Nobody ever talks about this (here or the beard trimming videos)
Great video. TX for the tips. I've always wanted a handlebar mustache and I finally got some gray in the mustache to match the beard, so I'm going for it!
You are fortunate that your mustache is a different shade than your beard. It really helps set it apart from the beard. My beard and stache are both rather salt and peppery so everything blends together. I trim my cheek line so that it comes down to the corners of my mouth rather than letting the beard grow up my cheeks and that helps a bit but not much. The separation trimming might help but that makes me nervous!
@@rancherhicks I've tried Just For Men before but unfortunately, it caused weeping sores on my chin. I'm at the stage now where I really like the white/ silver coming in and don't want to alter that, at least not permanently. I did try some trimming and it helped quite a bit. I also need to grow more of the stache out to make the handlebars thicker.
Nice video. But I am trying to grow a handlebar mustache.I already have a nice beard going. You were showing in this video how to maintain it?How do you actually grow it ,how do you trim it so it grows long?
The best way is with scissors and go in at an angle. But make sure you have it styled before trimming it back. We have bunch of how-to videos on our blog, livebearded.com/blogs/do-better
I gave up. I fear the Barbour. Every time I go they butcher me. I say hey I want to grow the fullest beard possible just simply shape and clean the edges. I want to grow it out long and full. Boom! I get a buzz cut to my beard. I say easy on the buzzers they say it's cool I'm just doing what you asked. I've even got a freaking strap beard. I want handlebars boom freaking buzz cut. These are old barbers. Even some newer barbers they say the same thing you don't want to be no hipster. I know one thing for sure, I'm not a millennial and I'm not a hipster. Just a fat guy looking to hide his 3 chins and look good. Can you please do a video on proper Barber lingo?
I am the same way , Brother! I trust myself and maybe one other to touch my mane! Just research and be aware of your needs and just trim slow!! YOU GOT THIS!!-JP
MrMoon_ start working on your beard yourself brother... it’s not that hard... there is enough tutorials out there for you to start taking your beard in your own hand!
I just came back from the barber. Asked him to shape the sides and level the bottom, before I knew he had trimmed half my mustache off. Never again.. I'm done.
You see. I've had legitimate barbours ask if I want my beard styled or trimed over the years. When I say yeah the only one that actually got it was this run down place in Rhoad Island. Great lad, but not a lot of business. Just learned to do it myself. Ironically it just grows in like a handlebar now and the most I have to do is do a lil curl at the tip with organic gel if need be. Trust yourself and you're golden. (I do fresh shave every few months just to get a fuller stache, but only becacuse I know how my facial hair grows.) Study your face and you'll find your groove
Well, since you already have the separation there, you can try forming that handlebar and it will really make the entire setup pop a lot more! Making it look like 1 solid entity.
Thanks for making this video. One question... I have curly hair and the right side of my moustache always droops downwards instead of upwards after I shape it upwards with the wax. It looks fine at first but quickly ends up looking like a bird in flight with one drooping broken leg. How should I fix this problem?
This happens to me ALL the time, you just have to train it. Over time it'll get better. Have you used a blow dryer on it? I would sit your blow dryer directly below the point of your stach facing upwards and you comb it out. You can email us at support@livebearded.com for more tips and tricks.
@@livebearded Thanks! I hadn't tried to curl it upwards in over a year, but followed your trimming instructions and it holds up on both sides:D Even used the blow drying tip... Works brilliantly! Thanks, man!
it seems you let the hair under the nose grow more downward and trim to the lip and let the more outside hair be the longer hair; am i getting that right?
Yes sir, absolutely! Then, you can pull those outer longer hairs in the desired direction while keeping the center hairs shorter and out of your mouth. It also gives the illusion that it's all one length!
Your stache is killer man! I actually like the natural look better myself, or somewhere halfway in between! Your beard is wonderful! Thanks for the tips.
Thanks for the feedback man! I definitely play around with mine personally and let it grow out a bit longer to fully cover the lip or trim it back to shape it up a bit more. That's what's so great about it, it'll grow back! Live Bearded, brother!
I assume once you start trimming any of it, even the small hairs in centre you will always be, so would it be better to grow it all out from the start long So the small hairs don't exist and they all are long enough to style out?
Not necessarily. You can definitely just let it grow naturally, but I'd advice to trim the centre ones. It's a lot easier to distinguish left from right and makes the styling faster and reliable.
What tools do you recommend to use to trim the mustache once it gets long and thick? I use the Brio Beardscape for the beard but not sure how to incorporate the mustache once it gets long. Thanks.
What's up bro? Great question, and one that we have addressed in other videos you can find on our channel. The short answer, though, is you can still use your Brio, and get yourself a good pair of shears to keep the ends clean!
It's much easier for you to just search mustache or trimming within our channel. There are so many videos it would take a long time to compile them all and drop them in one chat 🤙🏻💪🏻
@@livebearded trimmed the moustache just as you said,to create the handlebar effect, trimmed the sides and applied the wax with the pinch style you showed, and it looks really good, also trimmed my beard length, never been so nervous in my life !! Nice bro! Glad you're pumped with the results! Everyone here at LB gets nervous when trimming too 😆 Now that the hard part is over, just maintaining it every few weeks should give you an incredible look!
First off thank y ot u for your service! We here at LB are AVID supporters of our men and women who fight for our freedoms. Secondly, yessir! Grow it all for about 3-4 months before touching it. Only line up your cheek line and neck line so it doesn't get too wild and crazy. At the end of that time, you'll be able to see your real growth patterns and be able to go for the look you desire. Also, be sure to use good all natural products to avoid damage to your skin and beard! Check out our line of products below! www.livebearded.com

if i can just get it trimmed up nice i have a huge handlebar mustache. been growing it for 3 years. really need to find a barbor who can do this for me right. very afraid to mess it up.
Dude, could you make a video with tips on how to let your mustache grow as to have the handlebar one day? I'm letting it grow, i do not have a thick mustache, and it looks so weird, I don't know what to do to let it grow, but keeping a decent look. Any tips? Thanks
Hey brother, thanks for stopping in. Actually, Spencer has a whole series of grooming, and most are geared towards the handlebar. You can find these here in our channel or in our blog section of our website www.livebearded.com. There are tons of tips and tricks to help you in your journey brother. First step, however, is separating the mustache from the beard, which Spencer shows in one of his tutorials! Hopefully this helps point you in the right direction for mustache domination!!!
Really great advice! Im still struggling with my handlebar. I have grown it out for four months now and i cant get it to hold the shape. One day it sits perfectly, the next day its just not cooperating. My beardhair is very curly, took me some time to get the hang of it and keep a nice full and shaped beard. I got that part for over a year now, but the stache 😅 its my second time trying it now and i really dig the overall look with my full beard, but its so frustrating that it doesnt hold the shape day per day as yours. Any further advice? I really wanna keep it, so great to be one of the few brothers rocking a full beard and handlebar!

You are fortunate that your mustache is a different shade than your beard. It really helps set it apart from the beard. Thankyou! I have been letting my stash grow wild and untamed for about 4 months and now thanks to this video I can trim it properly.
Wooooo! Glad we could help bro!
2 years wild stache here. I curled it into a circle before I worked up the balls to trim up.
Live Bearded, brother!
thanks , excellent
trimming the handlebar is an art!
this is perfect thank you!
Glad you enjoyed our content! 💪❤️
Such a quality stache!
How to.grow stylish moustache?
My question, where do I get your moustache stick.I come from germany and this stick is not available here.
We currently don't ship internationally but I would check out our store on Amazon.
@@livebeardedthere is no stick, unfortunately
I assume once you start trimming any of it, even the small hairs in centre you will always be, so would it be better to grow it all out from the start long So the small hairs don't exist and they all are long enough to style out?
Not necessarily. You can definitely just let it grow naturally, but I'd advice to trim the centre ones. It's a lot easier to distinguish left from right and makes the styling faster and reliable.
I really don't like the blunt cut look. I like to feather the tip but it's really hard to do.
Nice vid. Nice tache bro. I will apply your tips. Thanks
Live Bearded thank you,. Can you send me the links to these videos?
It's much easier for you to just search mustache or trimming within our channel. There are so many videos it would take a long time to compile them all and drop them in one chat 🤙🏻💪🏻
Some awesome tips bro, gonna try them out now
Woooooo! Keep us updated
@@livebearded already looks so much better,Big thanks again bro
💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
Good video picked up a couple of tips thanks
Getting their growing my handlebars out again. My advice to the newbies is heavy wax at night when you sleep it will help to train.
Great advice brother! Thanks!!
damn, that is sick. what wax do you use?
Thanks!
Спасибо огромное за видео!
Grow the stache same time as the beard? Just shape and style as you go? Just finished up 22 years in the Navy, so I'm starting my post service beard.
Check out our line of products below!

going full walrus in quarantine as is my wont. never sure how much to trim vs how much to side sweep. but I def don't look as good as you XD
Im so close to having the same look for the stashe, love it!! Im just nervous about trimming it at the moment!! 🤣🤣
We have some great tips and tricks on our blog at www.livebearded.com, or if you have any questions feel free to reach out to us at support@livebearde.com
Can you use balm?
Balms, butter, wax… we encourage beardsmen to use whatever they want and to rock whatever kind of beard/mustache they want!! 💪
Great tutorial, very helpful Spence! Really like that trick on trimming the beard hair behind the stache.
Thanks brother!
Straight forward - AMAZING
💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
Epic stash!
Do you have to trim the middle? Will it not grow out to the side if you leave it?
Trimming is really based on your face shape and how you want your beard to look. It is pretty personal all around!
Great beard !!
Hell yeah brother I appreciate the advice.
Anytime bro!
if i can just get it trimmed up nice i have a huge handlebar mustache. been growing it for 3 years. really need to find a barbor who can do this for me right. very afraid to mess it up.
BTW great beard and moustache.
Excellent video!
First step, however, is separating the mustache
from the beard, which Spencer shows in one of his tutorials!
Keep at it and train , train, train!!!
@@livebearded What does "train" even mean? Some actual advice would be nice for us with curly facial hair, yours is straight so you dont have to do much.
Love the channel mate! From Australia.
You should add some new vids bro...
I'm have a decent beard already I feel but want to change it up with handlebars, so do i need to let it grow long before I do it?
just start your training and let get it going! The best way is to hit it and train it while you grow it!
@@livebearded thank you ill do that and keep you updated on my progress
