For the people who don't understand, it's metaphor. The virtual reality goggles stand for the fact that we as humans always want what someone else has/does or lives. Pete Wentz wasn't a stripper, I imagine he wants to be a kid again in that small band, just having fun. Jaden smith was there as a symbol to break our views of wanting to be someone else, or wanting what someone else has, and being his own champion. Showing us that we need to love ourselves. Hope that helps :)
Yalin Krupitsky I am so shook by the depth of this metaphor and there's so much that can be interpreted as something bigger and I really wanna discuss it but more people aren't really interested in he message and more about "where are the llamas" "where's Brendon" which is all right and all but I wish more people wanted to discuss the symbolism !!!
Yalin Krupitsky I honestly don't understand how people don't get the video or simply take it as a joke. This video represents so much. Wow people amaze me.
One mans dreams is another mans reality. A business man who wishes he was fit, a stripper who wishes she was rich, a man who wipes lipstick off, wishing he was a woman (or craves sexual attention?) a famous lady who wishes she had a family, a cop who wishes he was famous maybe, a kid who gets bullied and wants to be the bully or serve justice, Pete wanting to go back to being a kid in a band, then Jaden either realizing he can create his own dream and achieve it, or crashing his own dream. Credit to those in the comments who helped me figure this out!
The vocal message in this song is intense. "If I could live through this I can do anything." As hard as life gets sometimes, it's the moments that cause this thought to surface that make life worth living. The culmination of surviving these moments is so damn powerful. I admit this is my Repeat One song right now. It resounds a lot of courage, at least for me.
So basically, Jaden Smith is playing as Pete, who is playing as a nerd in a band, who is playing as a cop, who is playing as a model, who is playing as an old man, who is playing as a stripper, who is playing as a corporate CEO, who is playing as a boxer. Yeah, I think my brain melted. Good thing that Jaden destroyed the VR headset.
Tomas Kacani Its more metaphorical. Each person looks at the life of another person, probably to forget theirs, out of envy. They are all different person, looking at another life. The business man looks at the combatant, he wishes he could be strong and powerful. The dancer looks at the businessman, she wish to be rich and not have to sell her body. The grand father wish he was a woman. The star would like to have a family that likes her. The policeman would like to be famous. The young boy would like to beat up is aggressors. Pete wish to still be young. It shows that we all wish to have the lifes of others because we are not in their place and can not see the bad part of others peoples life's. And that also says that even if you do not love your life, there is surely someone who would like to be you.
I love how the people representing the champions are actually portraying everyday, underappreciated champions out there. Business men, grandparents, police officers, and especially the kids who dared to express themselves through music. I just love this video and song so much.
You only listed the roles of the male characters featured... which is what bothers me most about this video. The only women who have featured roles are a stripper and a celebrity.
I listened to this everyday when I was working out. I got bullied for being fat all these years, but this song motivated me to not give up and forget about bullies. I feel like a champion everyday.
This played in a Home Depot one day that I was there and I was so shocked and happy that I literally turned my head to the ceiling and yelled, "WHAT THE HELL!?!?!? YEEEES!" Then I danced a little circle and almost fell down.

This video was so freaking cool and so awesome. *Obnoxious Interpretation Below* I kinda feel like the meaning of the video was about how people live through others, and the side effects of seeing someone else through distorted lens. All of the people using the vr set had their reasons for wanting to escape. The business man wanted the courage of a MMA and the stripper wanted the business man's financial stability. The old man is a bit vague. He could be after the allure of being a stripper, or perhaps is a closeted transwoman given the lipstick they have on after taking off the vr. The starlet wants to be surrounded by family, she's going through a divorce and the old man was celebrating his birthday. The officer wants the recognition of the starlet, or perhaps awards like the one she was holding. The boy's the easiest one. When you're young, cops seem like real life superheroes and likely don't have bullies. Pete's repeatedly said we inspire him as much as he inspires us, he's living through the boy for inspiration, or perhaps he misses the early days of FOB. The boy at the very end wanted to be a rockstar. However, he's likely realized something that the other people haven't. Idolizing someone else and their life distorts your perception of their life. People don't live perfect lives. The business man was stealing from his company, strippers have a stigma around them, families can break apart, the starlet was in the middle of a divorce scandal, there's corruption in the police force, children are bullied, and let's not even get started on Pete's life. So, resolving to see the world through his own eyes, the last boy breaks the vr set and walks away.
Interestingly, with the context of the video, the line "if I can live through this" can refer to living vicariously through the VR headset, and not through a hard event
It could means living your own life. You are a champion to live your life and the difficulty that come with it. The song start by "I'm kind of new from the future to let you know we made a mistake". It maybe refer of people watching other people life. And the person say he's a champion because he can live through this instead of dreaming about it like others peoples does

really cool concept to this video. i love FOB so much for these kinda videos/messages. here's my take on the concept: everyone wants "another life" so they use the VR sunglasses, even tho everyone is low key unsatisfied with their life, the person who's using the VR only seeings the good. - the businessman loves power/authority so he becomes the fighter - the dancer sees all the money in the businessman's life but doesn't see how aggressive he is - the old person low-key wants be me a female or loves makeup/"feminine" things (*edit*: this character is transgender and she feels that she must hide her true feelings for the sake of her family, unlike the dancer who gets to "show off" her body). - the actress just wants to be surrounded by family like the old person but the old person feels just as lonely w their "secret" - the cop wants recognition from a job well done (like the actress getting the oscar), he get feels accomplished after the arrest - the kid on the street gets bullied and wants to feel like a "champion"/beating the bad guys like the cop - finally, pete reminisces about childhood jamming out with friends in garages. but then when jaden gets the glasses he realizes pete's reality of being in FOB is just as satisfying than pete being nostalgic. LOVE LOVE LOVE this video. can't wait for MANIA and the tour
I was thinking the old person was a transwoman hiding from her family, wanting to be perceived as a woman by others to the point that she's desired. If you talk about someone who's trans, keep in mind that they already were the gender they identify as (born with XY chromosomes, but neurologically they're female? They're a transwoman) and so if you describe them as trans it'd be more accurate to say they're a transwoman who wants gender confirmation therapy.
Moral of the story Jaden Smith wants to be Pete Wentz, who wants to be a kid, who wants to be a police officer, who wants to be a famous female movie star, who wants to be a grandpa, who wants to be a female stripper, who wants to be a rich CEO, who want to be a fighter. Great song tho
So this song is about wanting to live like others and not realising that other people would kill to have a life like you. Meanwhile, I would kill for that VR headset that Jaden DESTROYED at the end...
I have a similar view, although slightly different - I interpret it as "everyone wants to be something they're not, without realising that somebody else wants something they have." The business man dreams of being able to express his pent up rage physically, without appreciating the power and privilege he holds. The dancer dreams of being a powerful businessman who doesn't have to sell their body for money, without realising that the beauty and desire she provokes is a power in itself. The grandpa dreams of being young and desirable, without realising how lucky he is to have close, real connections with people who love him. The Celebrity dreams of a normal life with people who love her for her and not her status, without realising how many people would kill to have the spotlight. The policeman dreams of being famous and respected, but doesn't realise how lucky he is to live an exciting lifestyle where he can "beat up the bad guys" The young boy dreams of being in a position of authority and physical enough to take on his bully's, get a sense of justice, without realising how lucky he is to be able to play music with his friends just for fun, without stress. Pete dreams of going back to the days when he could do just that, before all the drama of fame got in the way. The moment of the switch seems to show what the next person wants from the others life, just before the transition. The businessman wants the fighters victory (moment of triumph). The dancer wants the businessman's money (briefcase full of money). The grandpa wants the dancers desire from others (rejecting someones advance). The Celebrity wants the "gift" of love (the I Love grandpa mug) The policeman wants the celebrity's award moment (the award on a podium). The young boy wants the policeman's pride (the moment of relief after doing justice). Pete wants to be in the moment of playing for fun (singing along with friends). The thing is none of them want the real struggles those people go through day to day to get to those points, just the highlights. Jaden's part seems to be that after walking a mile in each of these peoples shoes, he's realised that he wouldn't want any of their benefits or challenges, he'd prefer to live his own life without spending his time dreaming about the lives of others.
I finally get it, they all want different versions of reality but the reason Jayden breaks the VR is because he knows that is a fake reality, and in Young and Menace, they said woke up on the wrong side of reality which means that Jayden found out the truth to the VR, but I could be completely wrong
I love how the lyrics come full circle... It was referenced in the beginning that he came from the future, but kept asking "If I can live thru this." Then the key change came in with a triumphant melody, and they lyrics started sounding like "I f*ckin lived thru this." Which gives him the confidence that "I can do anything !"
Theory: this is about people who always wish they could live as someone else, but truly, there's plenty of people who wish they had their life. Jaden destroying the VR at the end is him saying for us to stop wishing to be something we are not and live in reality.
I love the original and remixed version of this. This is a terribly underrated and underplayed song. The lyrics, the production, the harmonization. Beautiful!
I hate to be another guy posting what they think the video is about, but after looking at what others have said I do want to say what I think each person represents. Obviously the video is about the fact that everyone wants what someone else has, regardless of the things they already have instead. The Businessman wants the simple but exciting life of the Fighter. Instead, he has a hard, stressful job that earns him plenty of money. The Stripper wants the wealthy life of the Businessman. Instead, she works for every dollar she can get, surrounded by men that adore her for her youth and beauty. The Grandfather wants to be young and beautiful like the stripper (This I think is where a lot of people are reading into it way too much. He doesn't want to be a girl, or been withholding transgender feelings his entire life. The lipstick merely connects the two lives from scene to scene and is more of a joke that an old men wants the life of a stripper. Think about it, when you're old, wrinkled, and sick, aren't you going to miss the happiness of youth and want it back.) The Celebrity wants the feelings of true, unconditional love that comes from living the family life of the Grandfather, instead of the two-faced adoration fans and the media give her, insulting her one moment and showering her in cheers the next. The Cop wants the recognition the Celebrity receives from people. Instead, he is ignored, or even put down, for standing up for whats right and bringing justice. The Child wants to be able to bring justice to the bullies like the Cop would. Instead, he finds solace in playing music in the garage with his friends. Pete wants to go back to his youth when music was fun and done out of passion and joy like the Child. Instead, it has become his job and lost the joy music once gave him. And Jaden Smith, who sadly is the butt of the joke for most people, wants the fame, success, and popularity Pete and FOB have gained over the years. But, when he takes the headset off, he realizes that even when he got what he wanted most in the world, there would be something he would then want instead. By smashing the headset, he iterates the moral of the song: that whoever you are, whatever you do, you are already a champion in your own right and it is already enough just to be alive
When Pete was in front of the mirror, all I could think of was "Makeup is fucking great for a guy. It makes a guy look beautiful, which, a lot of times, a guy is not beautiful. And I wanna change that"
I know Fall Out Boy has helped so many people with their music, but I'm especially thankful for this song. The line "If I can live through this, I can do anything" is just so impactful to me. Because it helps me see that even despite the many panic attacks I've had in my life, or all the low points I've hit, I can still do anything 💜 ((Sorry for the long ass comment))
thatonehispanicgirl what's better is the double meaning; Pete, the songwriter, is Bipolar, like me. A common feeling during manic episodes is a feeling of invincibility, like you can do anything. this resonates with me on such a deep level
Marie_the bee I'm so sorry you've had to deal with that so many times. As cheesy as this sounds, I'm really proud of you for being strong despite how hard it is to have asthma 💛
I can see why RM chose to collab with Fall Out Boy on this song... the message transcends languages, countries, and is just so goddamn beautiful. It doesn't matter if you're a k-pop idol or rapper or a rock artist... we're all saying the same thing and music connects us all together.
Video concept: everyone was unhappy in their life and want to live a different one, but some lives are worse then they appear Did that make sense? It made sense in my head
So Pete is a boxer business man stripper old man award winner police man little kid bass player in a massive punk rock band? Wow! This just makes me love him even more
Everyone says they hate FOB because they "sold out" and that the new music is "terrible", but honestly, I don't care. They're still together (rip mcr.) with the original members (Brendon! At the Disco) and still doing what they love. We can't say that we hate them just because they tried a new sound. If you do, then that's fine, just shut up about how they're "terrible", because that's your rude opinion.
They have been rocking out since their early teens and are still rocking out in their mid 30s. They didn't "sell out" they are making money doing what they love. Which is what a lot of people's dream.
Champion saved my life. I got out of the worst abusive relationship with a sociopath. Hardest year of my life after that. So many times I thought about giving up on life and ending it all. But Champion got me through it. I have listened to Fall Out Boy since "From Under the Cork Tree" back when I was 12 and I was 25 when Champion saved my life. I can't express how much gratitude I feel for that.
I love the concept for this video, the VR elements, the variety of lifestyles challenges and people. I think this video gives power to a lot of lifestyles that are put down in todays society, the commonly discriminated elderly, adult entertainers, students, and celebrities... This video spoke a lot to me as an artistic choice and as a social portrayal.
wait I just also noticed, the elderly man was wiping off lipstick? like as a form of transgender identity or drag identity that he's hiding from his family in order to be that "Father figure" to his family? If that was another layer, that would be awesome, because Transgender identity doesn't just come in the form of young white tumblr kids, but in all walks of life
Lucy Catcher just gotta remember that this video was probably written and directed by Pete Wentz himself so you already know there's gonna be some very like sensitive and untouched topics talked about in it because he is a big big preacher of equality
It's not just that +Lucy Catcher, although that's a part of it. We then see him being happy with is family, and the next thing is a woman who just got a divorce. Then it goes to the cop, who wishes he was rich like her. Then it goes to the kid who wished he could stop bullies like the cop can. Then it goes to Pete, who misses being a young musician. Then it goes to Jaden, who wants to be a professional musician (and sorta is I guess) like Pete is.
the song Namjoon did a remix with is about dreaming, regardless of age, gender, social background, status and basically any sources of identity which creates a boundary. Thank you so much, FOB, for creating this song. I'm sad I'm discovering this just now. Namjoon gave a touch to this great song, making it a masterpiece.
I think it's the fact that he likes playing music with his friends for fun, then when things get too big they go out of hand, and somtimes it's not fun anymore. idk, I'm just ranting :P
Patrick: Let's teach something in this! Pete: Ok, let's teach kids how to be a stripper and a fraud. Joe: Let kids follow therir dreams! Let's do a scene with a cop! Patrick: Oh! And And a Oscar award! Pete: Kids should have a garage band! Andy: They can be a old man! Joe: They can become us! A great band! Pete: Let's teach them how to be an American Psycho! Fall Out Boy: PERFECT!!!!
Fall Out Boy used to be my life, and I guess BTS are now, but I never forgot about the former, and now they're coming together in an incredible way. #RMxFallOutBoy

This song, its lyrics, the message is literal fire! Can‘t believe I just discovered it. It is so damn good! Seems like I will be here for a long time.
They suddenly changed their minds and decided that skateboarding llamas didn't really worked with this deep message.
In the brackets of the video with the llamas was just a visualiser, meaning a clip for people to listen to the audio with. Not an actual music video
probably the skater llamas represent the lyric "I can do anything" you know
LOL true
Derek ikr
really cool concept to this video. i love FOB so much for these kinda videos/messages.
here's my take on the concept: everyone wants "another life" so they use the VR sunglasses, even tho everyone is low key unsatisfied with their life, the person who's using the VR only seeings the good.
- the businessman loves power/authority so he becomes the fighter
- the dancer sees all the money in the businessman's life but doesn't see how aggressive he is
- the old person low-key wants be me a female or loves makeup/"feminine" things (*edit*: this character is transgender and she feels that she must hide her true feelings for the sake of her family, unlike the dancer who gets to "show off" her body).
- the actress just wants to be surrounded by family like the old person but the old person feels just as lonely w their "secret"
- the cop wants recognition from a job well done (like the actress getting the oscar), he get feels accomplished after the arrest
- the kid on the street gets bullied and wants to feel like a "champion"/beating the bad guys like the cop
- finally, pete reminisces about childhood jamming out with friends in garages. but then when jaden gets the glasses he realizes pete's reality of being in FOB is just as satisfying than pete being nostalgic.
LOVE LOVE LOVE this video. can't wait for MANIA and the tour
Danica Del Rey so in addition of being amazingly beautifull you are also amazingly smart...
Danica Del Rey the video was so confusing until i read your explanation, so thank you :)
Danica Del Rey thank you so much! Makes much more sense now!
Yes, I thought the same thing
Moral of the story
Jaden Smith wants to be Pete Wentz, who wants to be a kid, who wants to be a police officer, who wants to be a famous female movie star, who wants to be a grandpa, who wants to be a female stripper, who wants to be a rich CEO, who want to be a fighter.
Great song tho

I just find out this song! I just listened to the remix with RM from BTS and is... Insane!!! Master piece! Greetings from Costa Rica! Music links us!
So this song is about wanting to live like others and not realising that other people would kill to have a life like you.
Meanwhile, I would kill for that VR headset that Jaden DESTROYED at the end...
I think the video and song means another man's dream is another man's reality, what do you guys think?
I have a similar view, although slightly different - I interpret it as "everyone wants to be something they're not, without realising that somebody else wants something they have."
The business man dreams of being able to express his pent up rage physically, without appreciating the power and privilege he holds.
The policeman dreams of being famous and respected, but doesn't realise how lucky he is to live an exciting lifestyle where he can "beat up the bad guys"
The young boy dreams of being in a position of authority and physical enough to take on his bully's, get a sense of justice, without realising how lucky he is to be able to play music with his friends just for fun, without stress.
Willis Hall nice
Willis Hall Man,what a great conclusion! You and I,are REAL Fall Out Boy fans;D
James Maxson May I ask you why we are apparently "Retarded"Do you have a better conclusion, look,we all love Fall Out Boy,ND that's what matters :D
I finally get it, they all want different versions of reality but the reason Jayden breaks the VR is because he knows that is a fake reality, and in Young and Menace, they said woke up on the wrong side of reality which means that Jayden found out the truth to the VR, but I could be completely wrong
I think he was too shook by Pete Wentz's life. He's like " fuck I'm outta here"
Person Second this album may kinds be like how they did save rock and roll but differnt
Person Second Jaden Smith's name is spelled J A D E N
+Silexer it doesn't matter cause no one likes him
Silexer sorry, auto correct and I was too lazy to recheck it
I love how the lyrics come full circle...
It was referenced in the beginning that he came from the future, but kept asking
"If I can live thru this."
Then the key change came in with a triumphant melody, and they lyrics started sounding like
"I f*ckin lived thru this."
Which gives him the confidence that
"I can do anything !"
I saw the fall out boy RUclips notification and I dropped my phone out of excitement this is too much
my friend sent it to me on skype and I screeched and threw my computer, I feel you
I got the notification and also screamed. This why my family hates me
Theory: this is about people who always wish they could live as someone else, but truly, there's plenty of people who wish they had their life. Jaden destroying the VR at the end is him saying for us to stop wishing to be something we are not and live in reality.
I love TØP
+Little Mysteries imagine dragons is where its at
The kid singing along to "I can do anything" at 2:38 is literally me tbh.
I love the original and remixed version of this. This is a terribly underrated and underplayed song. The lyrics, the production, the harmonization. Beautiful!

Grandfather gets fkn mug as a gift and lyrics goes "I got rage everyday on the inside."
Haha Spot On
1:27
Rishabh Mitra lol he's like oh great another mug.
Think about it, when you're old, wrinkled, and sick, aren't you going to miss the happiness of youth and want it back.)
The Celebrity wants the feelings of true, unconditional love that comes from living the family life of the Grandfather, instead of the two-faced adoration fans and the media give her, insulting her one moment and showering her in cheers the next.
Dylan Wyatt 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

This is actually a very good song to help with depression
When Pete was in front of the mirror, all I could think of was "Makeup is fucking great for a guy. It makes a guy look beautiful, which, a lot of times, a guy is not beautiful. And I wanna change that"
*Promptly spits into bin before continuing.*
Ironic Jellyfish ME

I know Fall Out Boy has helped so many people with their music, but I'm especially thankful for this song. The line "If I can live through this, I can do anything" is just so impactful to me. Because it helps me see that even despite the many panic attacks I've had in my life, or all the low points I've hit, I can still do anything 💜
((Sorry for the long ass comment))
thatonehispanicgirl what's better is the double meaning; Pete, the songwriter, is Bipolar, like me. A common feeling during manic episodes is a feeling of invincibility, like you can do anything. this resonates with me on such a deep level
thatonehispanicgirl same except for I have asthma attacks, I've had so many everyone at the ER knows me
lovelly jhermea Haha I know right? 😂
Marie_the bee I'm so sorry you've had to deal with that so many times. As cheesy as this sounds, I'm really proud of you for being strong despite how hard it is to have asthma 💛

This is why we can't have nice things, Jaden.
I can see why RM chose to collab with Fall Out Boy on this song... the message transcends languages, countries, and is just so goddamn beautiful. It doesn't matter if you're a k-pop idol or rapper or a rock artist... we're all saying the same thing and music connects us all together.
OMG beautifully said love you
Video concept: everyone was unhappy in their life and want to live a different one, but some lives are worse then they appear
Did that make sense? It made sense in my head
When you put that way it definitely does
Holly shit! One of my fav band and boy RM will collab! I cannot believe my eyes. OMFG.

actually, he's jaden smith.
I like new and old (and yes Rip MCR ) :(
KittySparkles how are they terrible? Like what??¿? I genuinely donr understand
Aww I liked Brendon in his llama suit on a skateboard drinking beer.... but I still like this one.
WHEN WAS THIS?
Trashy Urie Champion (visualizer)
Champion saved my life. I got out of the worst abusive relationship with a sociopath. Hardest year of my life after that. So many times I thought about giving up on life and ending it all. But Champion got me through it. I have listened to Fall Out Boy since "From Under the Cork Tree" back when I was 12 and I was 25 when Champion saved my life. I can't express how much gratitude I feel for that.

Vaitallity Jpeg you guys are so creative trying to think of the meaning of their videos and songs. Like I can barely solve a riddle

Lucy Catcher I thought the people after wanted to be the people before them
wait I just also noticed, the elderly man was wiping off lipstick? like as a form of transgender identity or drag identity that he's hiding from his family in order to be that "Father figure" to his family? If that was another layer, that would be awesome, because Transgender identity doesn't just come in the form of young white tumblr kids, but in all walks of life
I've Lost My Ninjas Oh, thats SUCH a cool way of thinking about it. Ahh I'm digging this video oh god!

Gave me goose bumps. I love the message this video brings. We all want what we dont have.
Also shows that you cant achieve your dreams by watching and pretending. You have to act
what does 'the teen bassist kid to Pete' part means, then? that part got me confused
I think it's the fact that he likes playing music with his friends for fun, then when things get too big they go out of hand, and somtimes it's not fun anymore. idk, I'm just ranting :P
Gloriette Rose or maybe Pete wants his youth back
This song has such an awesome sense of energy, and pulse. I keep coming back to it. One of my favourite FOB tracks! 🙌
