i have a saying and it is ... if you do anything long enough (in this case 25 years) you're going to be good at it
      and yet ... he's not
the only logical explanation for it is .. he didn't actually DO anything .
so i guess we need to clarify this.
I've been playing guitar for over 30 years, generally i play every day , every second day without fail, when i was younger i used to play several times a day , but i still play at least every second day , now.. if he rarely plays then he can't really call that 25 years of playing
it'd be like if i bought a guitar today and was new to guitar and then played the guitar
then put it in a shed for 25 years then played it again
from one point of view i can tell people i've been playing for 25 years , from a more real point of view, i've only played for 2 days
Owning a guitar and playing and practicing are not the same thing,
it's ok to put the guitar down from time to time or to play once or twice a week BUT DO IT CONSISTENTLY , it's also ok to play full on then put it down for a month, that's fine, but pick it back up again, in summary , it's ok to take a rest but THERE IS A TIME LIMIT ON HOW LONG YOU CAN REST FOR, putting the guitar down for 5 years doesn't constitute as a rest it constitutes quitting
that's the only explanation if have for what he did , but you can't play solid for 25 years and be on the same level as a beginner.....NO FUCKING WAY !!!

I started around the same age. Played for about a year and a half and stopped do to having to move for medical school then being too busy and making excuses to start again. Just started again after 8 years and man do I wish I stuck with it. I was doing really well before, sticking with my practice very consistently. Forgot how much fun it is. In a way, it’s kind of nice being able to relearn the guitar, but this time more intelligently. Some of my muscle memory is still present which helps. Don’t do what I did, stick to it. Also, focus more on being able to play correctly and well. Don’t worry about speed, getting your hand used to the proper position to play clear crisp sounds is what’s most important. If you learn how to play chords and notes sloppily from the start, you will always be sloppy. Don’t trade early speed for precision and clarity. Really focus on learning chords, the fretboard, and scales. Learning rift is fun, but you will plateau if your main focus is learning songs/rifts. Learning the instrument itself is the most important thing, everything else will come later. Just my 2 cents since now I’m in the same boat as you.

These two things make all the difference- structured focused practice at least 5 days a week but only for an hour or 90 minutes. Then let your sleeping brain commit the RAM to your Long term internal storage. You literally learn while you sleep if you keep the information short, specific and manageable. You get much better with LESS time put in a day.
Then also play with at least one other person that is better than you 1x a week every other week and 1 person who is less advanced than you 1x a week, so you end up teaching them bits of what you know which makes you grasp it much deeper by explaining it to someone else.

I always watched these videos before I just started playing guitar to give me motivation and it worked. I got my own guitar and started playing. 3 months in and I can play songs like Sweet Child O mine, November Rain, Sunshine of your Love, Heartbreaker Led Zeppelin, Whole Lotta Love, Crazy Train, Come as you are and Heart Shaped Box. If you are thinking about getting a guitar, do it. It starts off really slow, the first 3 weeks are the hardest, everything just sounds terrible, but then your brain just figures it out passively and you get better. Do it!
