- ACF-50 is available from numerous sources including ebay and Amazon
PLEASE TAKE CARE WHEN WORKING ON YOUR VEHICLE:
RAISE IT SECURELY
AVOID SPRAYING ACF-50 ON THE TYRES AND BRAKES AND EXHAUST.
BEWARE OF IT DRIPPING ON THE FLOOR AND THE SLIP HAZARD THIS CREATES. CLEAN THE FLOOR BEFORE LOWERING THE CAR TO AVOID THE TYRES MAKING CONTACT WITH ANY DRIPS WHEN THE CAR IS LOWERED.
This is a video that I've been asked to make by many people but it won't be for everybody as not many people think about the underside of their car and what winter can do it
As I see the underside of cars frequently I am often shocked by how bad even some relatively new cars can look due to corrosion evident on the components bolted to it.
These are out of sight to most owners and while the detailing of bodywork is a big business, protecting the bits you can't see is often overlooked.
Corrosion to these parts will rarely cause any issues but for some people any rust is bad and it's so easy to prevent as this video shows.
This is most definitely NOT a paid promotion (I wish it was!). I only promote items from brands that I have used myself for many years whether it's Osram, Autoglym, ITG or ACF-50. The reason I go to all this effort for no gain is to produce content for my RUclips channel. Yes I'd do the work anyway but trust me it's many times harder and more time consuming to try and make a credible film at the same time!

I just wanted to say a massive thank you, Andrew. You convinced me to go out and buy a brand new Up! GTI (My first VW), and it is truly the best car I've ever owned. I've followed your Up! videos very closely, and they've been my trusty guide. You're a true inspiration mate. Thank you
Hey ThisIsLiamJones! Thanks for commenting. Congrats on joining the club and glad you are enjoying it. Nearly a year on since driving my first one, I am still surprised by how much I enjoy my car which I still drive daily. My new video dropping today will go into this in more detail so hope you enjoy that one too :)
I use ACF-50 on my motorcycle and find it easier using the spray bottles rather than the cans as it atomises better. As you have a workshop it might be easier spraying the ACF using a sprayer running off the compressor.
Thank you Andrew for inviting us all to be a part of this process. Its great you have the passion for cars to do it as many people now no longer bother. Keep Up! the good work.
Use to do same sort of thing to my old MK4, but used WD-40 Specialist Silicone spray Instead once a year.. Keeping it off the roads during winter months helped more too.
This stuff is much better applied with an air compressor, also you can use a flexible lance and spray the inside of the steel sections you can access.
Any high wash areas will also need treatment more often as the protection wears off.
There is another product made by ACF called Corrosion Block,it's very similar to ACF but is a slightly thicker product aimed at the marine industry and is much more resilient to been washed away in high wash areas.
I have used both ACF and Corrosion Block on my motorbikes for years and it's worth every penny, but it's by far best applied with an air gun.
Any recommendations on exactly what to buy? I've had a look at cheap compressors and attachments but do not really understand exactly what is needed.
@@Tim955w I have a 50 litre Air Master I brought from Machine Mart, don't need anything fancy for the garage, just stick with a name brand which makes getting spares easy should you need them.
Cheap HVLP mini spray gun is best, makes getting into tight areas of the bike easier. Look for a gun with a 0.8-1.2mm spray tip, this works well for me with ACF,Rust Blocker and XCP,no issues with any of these.
Get a long air hose to save moving the compressor around, you can use your compressor for all sorts of tools it's not a one trick pony so make use of it. Tyre inflators, grinders, wrenches, buzz guns etc.
Speak with your local dealer and they will make sure you have the correct connections ect
50 litre is fine for basic home use.
@@philiproberts6947 thank you for the detailed response, much appreciated.
Hi, you would need to remove the arch wheel liner, this is where the rust begins, behind them the drain runs out and there is foam behind that will suck water and collect mud, then there is behind the fuel filler cap that needs a good rust proofing as well, and then again in between where the plastic front and rear bumper lines up to the metal body.
I just did the underside of my Ford Puma with the grease variant of ACF-50. MOT guy wasn’t impressed lol but he passed it with no advisories. I used a paintbrush one of them being a behind the radiator paint brush with long handle. Amateur car guy but it certainly was satisfying afterwards.
Wish the first owner of my Mini Cooper s has done this 14 years ago whilst living in Aberdeen 😩🙈
Sorely tempted to do the same to my up! GTI, especially as I hope it is a keeper for many years to come. I’ll be using my Audi A2 during Winter, so I might make this a Spring (no pun)/Summer job. Cheers for the inspiration and demonstration of how easy it is to apply Andrew.
It's a pleasure Darren, glad it's of some use.
Great product. If I’d have known about this when I collected my R I’d have used this instead of trying to ceramic coat it all. Although I imagine this would have been just a painstaking! I’d have brushed it all on as it looks messy with it running and dripping everywhere.
Just done this in my 11 year old Eos. Front end was perfect and rust free! Back end and the support braces were a little rusty bit not too bad. Hopefully this stuff protects it for the future. Thanks for the useful video!
2 years on, how did the acf hold up on the underside?? Did it wash off?
Looks like Bob Ross with the brush 😂
A little bit there yeah nice 😂😂
Have checked out Bob Ross - not offended by the comparison :)
Andrew, job well done mate. What's your lead time for doing the treatment . Are you up to 6months yet for the Up GTi.
Maybe not my current one but the new one arriving March 1st , might nip up to your place for a spring afternoon appointment.
ACF is a great corrosion protection on bikes and cars👍
I cannot believe you don't get rear discs on a GTI 😯
It is a tiny car, but then again my friends Kia Picanto has rear discs so no excuse really.
It's a cheap car and developing discs just for this one model would have been a massive cost to VW what with R&D, testing and ESC calibration and would have affected the price. Plus it really does not need them! It's so light the rear brakes wouldn't be allowed to do much work anyway as they would just lock up. Think of all that weight shifting forward under braking - less weight on back, the more likely they are to skid. It would look better admittedly but no car is perfect :)
I drove a 2010 Fiesta Zetec S with a 1600 engine and that only had drums too.
I drove a 2010 Fiesta Zetec S with a 1600 engine and that only had drums too.
Good video - Though I put a black bin bag over the disks/hubs while cleaning under the wheel arches and spraying stuff in that area...
Works much better if you use the trigger pump and warm it up.
Subscribed! Any chance of a follow up video?
I would also think it'd a good idea to apply to the sills and any cavities.
I do my motorbikes with this and it works so much if you attomise it through a cheap spray gun connected to a compressor
think i will be doing this to my up gti now Andrew as they are not making anymore and i intended to keep it for some years, will have to trolley jack mine up though, no usefull lifts like yourself
I'm back on the trolley jacks too now - it's not that bad. Will have to do my Clubsport S before it's too late.
There another kind of bottle thats better for this purpose, u just keep the bottle in hot water then when u spray that spray bottle gives out fine mist that goes everywhere in all directions, it coats better.
Pleasure to watch you go meticulously about protecting your car from rust.
Do you also spray under the hood, inside the exhaust, door joints perhaps? I'm thinking about how / where to ACF the used car I'm getting (Saab 9000 :))
This might sound really silly. But I am also very OCD with keeping my cars in immaculate condition like yourself haha. But I also want to keep my warranty intact. Would you reckon my dealer would do it for me?
A main dealer might not but an independent garage might. In the UK there are firms who specialise in applying anti corrosion products to the underside of vehicles.
Andrew I think you need to do a demonstration on how to do this on a golf R 😉🤣
Is that a hint ;) I've got to say it's not a job I'd want to do on anyone else's car as it's messy and a bit tedious but it's nice to do it on your own car (once!)
Great video. Never heard of this product till now. Was going to use tetrosyl waxoil clear or black, but think will give this ago. Would I be able to use this in the holes within the car like waxoyl would? Great vid thanks will do this when golf is back from bodyshop
I bought Acf 50 to use on the metal bits in the engine bay but haven't got round to it yet. I've had undersealing done professionally using 3M. Do you intend to do the engine bay aswell? Would love a demonstration of this if possible. Cheers
You have both my dream cars!
Up! GTI and Golf GTI Edition 30? :)
Another good video, have you still got the edition 30,if so more videos would b great
great video. i have a clubsport which use as a daily, wondering where i can find someone to do this for me.
Hi Lew, I'd try any workshop really especially old school or classic car type places. Good luck:)
Great video.
Good job Andrew 👍🏻
Thanks John!
Not looking forward to doing this without a lift, but it's good practice indeed.
True, no lift will make it harder but at least using a lift I've been able to show you clearly what do which should make it easier if you are on the ground trying to do it as you know what to expect :)
@@volkswizard upside is my head will be weather resistant as well :)
@@bardenegri21 Thanks a good idea, wanna make a before and after video ;)
I’ve just done mine without a lift and it wasn’t too bad. I sprayed where I wasn’t I did t get dripped on quite as much.
If you get it on your underseal, won't it peel /melt it off - or is it not a solvent based produce?
Great video 👍🏻 is this safe on paintwork? Have a small rust area around my boot badge that needs treating
Very interesting video for my ocd 😂Will you be doing the same with the R8 by any chance and also detailing it?
Please keep up those amazing videos !!
Thanks Felix, that is V E R Y kind of you to say that so the least I can do is oblige :)
Good work Andrew 👍
Thanks Alan :)
Great Video - I love videos with things we can do ourselves to preserve our cars. What happens if you get it on the suspension bushes? I used to WD40 them but been told WD40 rots them? But personally only ever seen +ve effects such as softening the rubber to stop them splitting? What do you suggest?
I wouldn't worry too much but apply with a brush to avoid getting it where you don't want it.
volkswizard Thank you, I’m going to do my Polo this weekend :)
Won’t the heat melt the wax on the brake drums? 🏴
If you apply it lightly it's just a film so there wont be any drips and any heat will possibly seal it even better. It's a good point hence the careful minimal application with a brush.
so 5 years down the track. How long dif ACF-50 last and is it worthwhile for a daily driver?
Sold the car after a year as I moved to the countryside from Birmingham and it didn’t suit commute as it’s not a motorway car. I use Bilt Hamber Dynax UC now as it’s pretty permanent like factory cavity wax and dries clear.
Brand new car and the rust is starting already nice one vw. Get the car rotten as soon as possible so it won't even last 10 years not just sloppy work but an business plan
I think most cars are like this. You want to see the underside of a 911 after a few years! This corrosion will have no effect on the car's ability to stay road worthy generally. It's just unsightly and easily prevented!
Hows the underside of the VW up looking now after over a year???
Great video. Would love to see more content like this. Keep up the good work
Thanks Andy 👍
Great video, I've just sprayed my BMW M135i as it was rusty as hell, does the spray have to be wiped off? Also, some accidentally dripped on the exhaust but I just rubbed it off with a cloth. Will it need a full clean? Cheers. M
No, leave it on as it will set, any excess will drop off. Exhaust will be fine but best to get excess off. Don't slip on any on the ground (cos I have!)
@@volkswizard Ah great. Wiped most of it off and just started the car for a little bit before and was all ok. Cheers for getting back to me, really appreciate it. Must of hurt haha!
Is is safe on car paintwork?
Great video👍
Thanks JayP Sull!
I'm sure the number plate is off centre
Probably is, still the same rush job from when I collected the car - my fault as dealer didn't know I was collecting until a few mins before! I think I fitted the plates, just glad to be able to drive away.
@@volkswizard great channel anyway mate.
Thanks Tom!
i think you sprayed on your front off side disc!
Doesn't really matter as it will burn off
Will this acf50 damage my matte black exhaust finish?
I'd avoid getting it on your exhaust
How long does this treatment last.
It all depends on how it's used but my Clubsport S which had done 4k miles in 2 years including in the wet was still perfect. Once it's dry it's quite hard to get off so should last a long time but I will report back with my car in due course :)
Is this the same as waxoil?
ACF 50 is much lighter that Waxoyl, between the two of them is a Normfest Cavity wax from Euro Car Parts which I've used in later videos and it's more durable - video would have been on my Mk8 GTI in late 2021.
I was always told not to spray the underside of cars in case you blocked drain holes.
Well that's a possibility but we aren't touching the body (as I said early on) so there are no drain holes to block :)
How many cars do you actually have
I'm a dealer in cars but as my own, 3 right now. Officially the Up! is for sale but I can't see that happening as I love it so much.
What are your 3 cars?
I have a Mk5 GTI
Would this be OK on the engine bay?
