BikeSocial's seven month test of motorcycle corrosion protectants, pitting the leading products against each other in a controlled salt-spray analysis. Muc-Off has asked us to point out that: "Muc-Off Motorcycle Protectant is not intended as a stand-alone dedicated corrosion protectant, it is formulated to protect your motorcycle by dispersing any remaining moisture after a thorough clean and removal of other corrosive substrates, the product therefore is not designed for the type of use seen in this test which intends to replicate a motorcycle being ridden through winter. A Muc-Off product far better suited to this application is our Corrosion Defence treatment, which will be launching in August 2018.
"Ultimately no protectant will ever be a replacement for the appropriate level of care and it is only this combined with the correct products that will help you enjoy your motorcycle all year round."
Products on test:
ACF-50
XCP Rust Blocker
Scottoiler FS-365
S-Doc100 Corrosion protectant
TechCote ACS TC200
WD-40
GT85
Muc-Off Motorcycle Protectant
Motorex MotoPrep
Valvoline Multispray

Thank you so much for the time and effort to put this whole test together. Seems like quite a mammoth task! Thanks again!
Great test and thank you for such a detailed approach. Like many others I’ve been a fan of ACF50 for years but I’ll now get some XCP.
Wow, that’s a tremendous amount of work. Thank you very much!
Great test, thanks for taking the time to conduct it so thoroughly.
Tried them all, ACF50 for me applied with a compressor, buy it in bottles too as a little goes a long way. The cans can be used but leave them in a bucket of warm water for 20 minutes before using...
Thanks for an excellent video review. I live in Southeast Indiana and I've been looking at some options for my snow plowing equipment.
Excellent test. Of all the non-laboratory tests on RUclips, this is the most comprehensive motorcycle rust product test, and closest to the scientific method that I have seen!
Good use of control, reducing artefacts. I do not think blinding the test would make a difference, so excellent test! I continue to use ACF50, but I will give XCP a try should I come across it in the future.
Great research. This is very interesting as I just bought a new bike today and want the best for my new toy. Thanks for all the time you've spent on this must of been a right choir
Cheers Dave! Let us know how you get one and what you go for. John
This extremely thorough and comprehensive test was very useful in choosing a rust protection product. In addition to testing for rust protection it was useful to know that certain products are safe on electrics, wiring and rubber O Rings etc. Will be looking forward to more comprehensive product tests in the future. The time taken and attention to detail during the testing period were second to none. Very impressed. Keep up the good work 👏 👍
Thanks very much! I'm working on a follow-up to this at the moment. Cheers, John
Superb test, well conceived and executed. Just would love to have seen WaxOyl included. Many thanks for all the hard work!
That was a very comprehensive test and taught us a few things regarding the products, and how we should maintain them after the initial treatment. You need the products to be sticky or they will just get blasted off when you ride through muddy puddles and salty grit. A product that you can clean off very easily will wash off during riding and be no use whatsoever. Just use a bit of elbow grease and your new bike will still look like new again after the winter commute. ACF 50 and FS365 are my favourites, but give a couple of extra coats each time you wash off the mud and salt.
Have you seen the update? Though there's another in the works... ruclips.net/video/wBgF07I7TQM/видео.html
@@bennettsbikesocial I have a brand new bike coming in the next few days and will be riding it in all the filth, so I'll do an ACF50 before and after comparison to see if it still looks like a brand new bike after I clean it off.
A very well planned and executed test, thanks for sharing!!
Thank you very much! John
Great test. Respect your dedication to it.
Great video, thank you for your hard work. I'm not a fan of ACF50 & favoured GT85, got to have a rethink.
Great information 😜 appreciate your work and information you shared!! Thank you for the time and work you gave my friend peace ✌️
Thank you so much for this test. I am looking to use xcp on a 1973 mercedes annually and will now go for 6 monthly intervals thanks to your testing. I can also recommend aquasteel for rust conversion on parts that have surface rust that need arresting. I have used frosts and fertan rust converters and aquasteel is superior. cheers
For anybody interested in purchasing XCP, Halford are selling the 400ml spray tins for £10 !!, I have just bought 2 tins using click/collect so no postage either.
Exceptional work, great study , univercitys give degrees for that kind of dedication. Great project.
Thanks very much! Sadly I was useless at uni! Cheers, John
I would be interested to see what Marvel Mystery Oil would do.
I use it myself and not just for rust protection. I also add it to my oil and gas.
Thanks for taking the time to make this review. It's only a shame there are currently no delivery of XCP Rust Blocker to Australia. :(
Sam I am, Transair.co.uk maybe able to ship XCP products to you in Aus!
ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC REVIEW, THE ONLY extra bit i would like to have seen but probably quite difficult to accurately record is how quickly these items burn off. xcp a clear winner but what about when it comes to the heat from an engine cooking it off.
Also interested I this. I use xcp but the second the engines running it mists off so I think its probably great for the undercarridge and frame and bits but I'm not sure about the hot bits.
@@dandev9239 heard anything about it? Have the same question
heard anything about it? Have the same question
@@antonio7334 I've seen no updates, ACF 50 is easy to use and XCP is mucky as sin.
@@TheCryptKeeper8 well yes, but XCP offers better protection, and with the new clear coat version of XCP might be less sticky
What model of Clarke's spray gun was in the vlog please, & did you have no adjust the air coming out of the compressor 👍👍😎
Thanks for this!
An old mechanic friend of ours did a test like this in the ‘70’s, he used muffler clamps hung on a chain link fence…he never touched them, never re-applied…
He used WD-40, fresh grease(bearing), regular clean motor oil, drain oil from an oil change, and one or two other products I don’t remember anymore…anyways, the winner?
Used drain oil by a long shot…
His theory was the acids and other compounds in it helped it penetrate the metal better…I’ve used this on many things since, and it really seems to work!(mower decks, and suspension components come to mind)…
Maybe include this if you do this again?
Best of all, it’s free!☺️
I would go for the Techcote as I think it applies easier and less messy so you can use it every month.
Thanks, very well thought out test.
Limited availability in the UK, but would be interesting to see how "BoeShield T9" fairs in your test(s)..?
Much appreciated. It verify my choice of rust blocker and justify the cost. Grit does stick to it though.
Cheers David! Have a read through the full reviews and you can see how it compares to the others for stickiness: bit.ly/rustproofers John
Wow . What a legend ! Thanks for the hard work
Excellent. As comprehensive as can be I reckon. I will be swapping from ACF50 to the XCP when I've used up what I have left. (Unless the article, which I've not read yet, throws up any surprises!)
Cheers! Have a read through, as you can decide for sure then: bit.ly/rustproofers John
Actually, if you read the reviews here, you'll see how sticky each one is: www.bennetts.co.uk/bikesocial/reviews/products/the-best-motorcycle-corrosion-protectants
A cracking great test, thanks! From CT, U.S.A.
I used Tetroseal wax oil last winter. Did a good job, easy to wipe off with white spirit at the end of the winter. Downside is that it’s a devil to apply as the aerosol nozzle gets blocked with the product. Will try XCP. 👍
Hi
What about a lubricant with rust protection? Would XCP also lubricate parts in addition to rust protection?.
Very useful, thanks. Great dedication
Cheers! John
Can you use XCP Rust blocker on your chain? Not sure if it’s effect on O/X rings
Very comprehensive test thanks. Sits patiently waiting for the trolls and their 'just keep applying' or 'you don't just leave it' comments'
Cheers! John
Oh ye of little faith...You'll next be suggesting that social media has given the morons a voice.
Thanx for that. Good video. What about WD 40 specialist silicone spray, it does repel water. Just a thought.
Brilliant test - thanks!
Thanks very much! John
Has anyone tried Lanoguard? if so how does it compare to xcp rust blocker please?, im looking for a soft/fluid type of protection for the underside of my car
Do you have any experience of Corrosion Block as it's supposed to Bea thicker than the original ACF? Wondering how it compares to XCP.
I have Honda CB300R motorcycle and its silencer has a coppery colour. What is the product I need to use for the silencer to protect it from corrosion. I believe cannot use the regular chrome metal polish as it might remove the colour ?
Also can I use WD40 or Silicone spray on silencer ?
Very good test!!! Thanks
My friend from across the pond🇺🇸
Thanks for watching! Cheers, John
Great test. Thanks
Thank you, great test. I have one question. I have been watching a very good set of videos showing how to do all the required maintenance on an R1250GS. In the video the author says that he hopes you are not using ACF-50 because it makes working on the bike a pain. Have you seen this? Any negatives to these products?
I'd say it depends how thick you put anything on. I do my own servicing and haven't had any issues. Cheers, John
A BIG THANK YOU FROM ME. THANK YOU!
corrosion X works great on sea planes and aircraft in general; I use that as well as Dinitrol
Great review. Tks
great test well done.
Brilliant review, and some serious dedication! Tried ACF-50 and made a right old oily mess of everything. Will be reverting back to FS 365. Thanks!
SteveR76 FS 365...? Have you seen the test?
Rita Amorim Yes....
SteveR76 Why would you not buy one of the best products?
Rita Amorim FS 365, when used as per the instructions, WAS one of the best products. Honestly didn't think it was this complicated... And honestly can't understand why you're so interested in my bike cleaning habits. Thanks for stopping by though.
Warm ACF50 first and it’s not messy, better still atomise using a compressor, good enough for military aircraft, good enough for my bike...
Thanks for the video, I was looking early today some other product (which I bought) but look like you suggest others so the question is: can you 2 different product for example Acf 5 0 which is not doing great job and then in a couple of day use xcp spray which is the right one to use? I mean can you use 2 different product for the same motorbike? thanks
I don't think it'd cause you a problem, but I guess that a product like ACF-50, which stays more liquid (and is still a good product), might prevent another one from adhering as well, so ideally you'll clean the bike thoroughly first. If you bought ACF-50, don't worry! Just keep using it until you run out, then see what you fancy doing. I'd just use it more frequently than some of the others. Pleas do check out the updated version of this video though. Cheers, John ruclips.net/video/wBgF07I7TQM/видео.html
Can xcp be used on plastics I have a Honda forza
Just come across this. Nicely done. Thanks
Make sure you check out part 2! Cheers, John
You should try Corrosion-X, too. I'm certain it will beat the crap out of the other products.
Puzzled by the FS365. If it's water based won't it just wash off as soon as I go out in the rain. Then when I get home I wash off the bike and put on some more FS365. Next morning it gets washed off in the rain. I reckon it's going to cost me about £12 a week 😮
WHAT is the best for the exhaust
How compared with Lear Chemicals - Corrosion Block?
What about white lithium grease (can version exists too)
Very comprehensive testing - John I'd be interested to know what you use personally both before and after the testing?
It depends what I'm doing... ACF-50 smells better and looks better as it's not as sticky as XCP, but that's also because it stays liquid so disappears more quickly. I use XCP inside frame tubes, swingarms etc, and all over any winter bikes. But if I want something to look good straight away, I do still use ACF. ACS TC200 is very good too, but because I use a compressor, it's not suitable for me. Cheers, John
John with the xcp spray do you spray engine ect let it sink in and wipe then with microfibre cloth, cheers mate your reviews are brilliant, will look at bennets this year for insurance as they are looking after bikers by putting on these helpful vids
Thanks very much! If I'm putting it on with a compressor, I don't need to wipe much off, but either way yes - I keep a microfibre in a sealed bag for wiping off some excess, but I don't worry about letting it soak more than the five minutes or so it's on there. I can then use the rag for wiping plastics. I do the same with ACF (which leaves black plastics looking great). Most of the bits I'm wiping tend to be painted, so damage not withstanding, they don't need much. I really spray it thick down frame tubes and into the swingarm (where I can), then just leave it.
Hope that helps!
I'm in the middle of doing this test again, to include some other products, as well as a new XCP 'Clear Cote', which is a lighter version... so far it's looking very impressive. Cheers, John
Will acf50 work on black exhaust? Matte black?
What about jenolite waxoil spray its amazing. Acf 50 best for electronics
Great test but FS365, apply after every ride? You could apply chip oil after every ride and it would do a better job.
The test uses each product as per its instructions, and also compares overall protection. You do need to read the articles though to see it explained more... bit.ly/rustproofers
Impressive dedication. Could you do a test on already rusted pieces to see which (ACF or XCP) slows down future corrosion more after applying?
ACF-50 Is marketed as penetrating under the rust layer and blocking it better, whereas XCP seems to be thicker and stickier so it might not penetrate as deep into an already rusted surface.
I had brand new OEM exhaust pipes and cat converter for my R1 that had gone rusty from several years of storage. I sprayed them all head to toe in ACF50 and left them wrapped up in bubble wrap for a few months. When I came to sell them most of the rust just fell off. Looked brand new. Amazing stuff, however lesson learned: spray before storage.
hi have u tested StrikeHold?
Thanks
Which is best one tin of acf50 or five litres of wd40
I have used ACF50 with good results but I want to try XCP, will apply it to my bike next time .. how long will it last between washes ?
That will depend on what you use to clean it and how hard you clean it - the plates were rinsed between washes, but cleaning products will vary massively. Cheers, John
Excellent thank you!
Fluid Film is a very good product but hard to source in the UK
Next test, you could include Rocol Z30. Rocol make good stuff.
exellent review.
Great video
Can I ask what compressor and gun you use please? Thinking of getting myself these items to apply my ACF50/XCP and don’t know where to start...........I hate using the spray can because it just goes on so thick. Great video
Many thanks
Hi Nick... it's a Clarke Panther Compressor from Machine Mart, and the paint gun from their air tool set, which appears to be discontinued. However, it looks like it's the PSC spray gun.
Nick D you can buy the ACF-50 in quart bottles and if you keep inside and apply at room temp you will find it goes on nicely.
Is there a link to the XCP product and what is the best way of applying?
You can get more info in the full reviews here: bit.ly/rustproofers.
I wonder how better the others would have faired if like the fs365 they were reapplied regularly too.
Have a read of the full articles in the link: bit.ly/rustproofers Obviously they'd have done even better, but that's why I've tried to make it as clear as possible, and used each product as the manufacturer intends
Great video 👍
Thanks - hope it helped! John
What an amazing comprehensive test. Do you think a coasting of the best protection and fs365 on top would give the best combo? I currently have acf50 and put fs365 on top after a wash
It couldn't hurt, though keep in mind that ACF stays more liquid than something like XCP
Bennetts Bike yeah that’s something I don’t particularly like about acf50 as I mainly ride off road so crud sticks to it. I’m likely to change to something like xcp the next chance I get to give to a good clean and start from scratch. Thanks for the reply
Dont mix the products, there could be something in one product that cleans off the product underneath, leaving you with less protection.
Each product was tested for stickiness - you can see the results here: www.bennetts.co.uk/bikesocial/reviews/products/the-best-motorcycle-corrosion-protectants
The ACF50 is meant to stay liquid .. so it can creep on a nano scale to get into those tight spots and microscopic fracture in the paint surface ... it's always spreading until it's physically removed . That's why it's used so much in the aerospace industry ... it gets where you can't see or reach .
Excellent video
Thank you very much!
Great stuff.
Probably should have used one of the WD-40 variants for anti rust/corrosion instead of WD-40
Good job.
Should have added Bilt hamber dynax UC as an odd ball.
Thanks! I'm sure there'll be a few extras to do - at least with the way this is set up, I can run the same test again (though I'll keep the top two or three from this test in any future tests to verify the results). Cheers, John

Sound interesting...
I have 5L of acf50 left but I've ordered some XCP now, Looks better for me as I use my motorcycle daily.
Hi J0rzeh. Have you found that it burns off faster than acf50 or is it about the same if you're now using it? Cheers.
@@TheCryptKeeper8 Seems to burn off the same as ACF50 only it's still protecting the metal, I just reapply it every 6 to 8 weeks to be safe :)
@@j0rzeh Perfect. Cheers mate
How is xcp doing long term on the bike?
WD-40 also have a product Specialist Rust Prevention Lanolin Lubricant
Excellent review!
However no one ever mentions Owatrol or Lanoguard - they are definitely worth a look.
I'd not heard of them, though Owatrol appears to be a paint-on product, which would be very hard to get into all the nooks and crannies of a bike.
@@bennettsbikesocial Can you do a test with (ACF 50 and corrosion block) they made by the same company and no videos on the comparison!
@@REPORODGE As far as I know they're the same, but I'm afraid it'll have to wait until a later test as I'm halfway through another one now; XCP has launched some new products. Cheers, John
I'd the xcp safe to use on fork stanchions? How quickly does it burn off the exhaust?
It should be fine on the stanchions (though it'll wipe off the swept area of course). Like anything, it'll burn off the exhaust pretty sharpish.
@@bennettsbikesocial Thank you.
You ever consider or do an anti corrosion test with all vehicle waxes, polishes, etc..? I would think they would make a barrier, but some might hold gunk.
A polish wouldn't add any protection, but a wax might. Problem is it'd be really hard to apply in all the nooks and crannies of the engine. Cheers, John
@@bennettsbikesocial Makes sense. The wax probably wouldnt fair well on the hot stuff I guess. Thanks for the response.
Top effort! Thank you! To me fs365 is totally pointless as no one has the time to spray their bike after every single ride. I appreciate that that's what they recommend but in my view that recommendation is a bit of a cheat.
The whole point of these corrosion protectors should be that they protect one's pride and joy from the elements for a reasonable period of time. 1 ride is not a reasonable period of time in my view.
funny that because when i used to ride in salty winters i rinsed the bike down and prayed after every ride and it took no more than ten to twenty minutes. if you love your bike you'll do it i guess
Ducati owners do 😉
I commute and use it. Wait for the bike to cool and spray it
09:39 & 09:51did the timer survive after plunging into the pool of salt water? Thanks for the mammoth effort! Top man.
Can i use any of the mentioned top performing products on fishing reels with it dissolving plastic parts and or fishing line?
Probably. Maybe. But as there's no fishing line on bikes, I didn't test that! Best bet is to narrow down the options, then contact the manufacturers. XCP, ACF and Scottoiler will be easy to speak to, and will have data sheets that should make it easy to check material compatibility. Cheers, John

Most of them should be available for shipping.
though XCF did better in your shed test, going with acf50 because it isn't sticky and tends to drip to other areas and protect them as well!
It's not as sticky if you put XCP on a bit too thick, but ACF is easier to get a nicer appearance. Though make sure you subscribe so you get a notification of the second round of this test that I'm running at the moment... Cheers, John
@@bennettsbikesocial will do, loving these tests, definitely great for consumers. Ideally this will force manufacturers to make better stuff
That's one amazing test you did there. I do wish you had given your personal opinion on which product you would use on your own bike taking into consideration the various factors such as stickiness, ease of use etc
Sorry - I thought I had! I use XCP and ACF; XCP for more heavy duty protection, and ACF when I just want the bike to look good quickly.
