I have been mostly plant based since the early 80s. Going back to dairy now and then. Finally, for several years, I am 100% plant based, no oil, and avoid salt, and sugar. In spite of all this, i have osteoporosis, and have broken some bones. Most recently, in early July, a leg/hip bone, and am not back to walking on my own yet. I believe that the over consumption of protein is at fault. I couldn't shake the notion that it would help with weight loss, and help build muscle. I worked out regularly. I respect Chelsea very much, but have finally learned that our bodies need just so much protein. Beyond that, the bones give up calcium to neutralize the acid environment we have created, and we pee it out creating kidney disease. For me, it pretty late to correct this damage, except having returned to a normal protein intake, and lots of exercise, mostly weight bearing, i have lost abt 100 lbs, and am getting in great shape. For an old gal, I say, "Better late than never." Thanks for letting me talk about this very important issue, and ultimately it's to each his/her own.
Why do you think that overconsumption of protein is at fault? Actually recent research found that vegan/plantbased diets are associated with lower bone mineral density. So it is probably due to you being mostly plantbased. In your age you should definitely focus on increasing instead of decreasing your protein intake. I was a huge proponent of plantbased diets, but when i look at the actual research and at the research on the longest living populations i came to the conclusion that a plant heavy diet, but that does include low amounts of animal protein (fish, egg, dairy) is best for overall health and nutrition status. The research presented from the vegan camp is very often biased (as is the research presented from any other group that excludes entire food groups). For example eating lot of raw greens can lead to mineral deficiencies and kidney stones. It is really important to look at the actual data and draw your own conclusions. Eating a lot of plants and grains is definitely important for overall health, but including small amounts of animal protein is even better that excluding it completely - this was for example shown for the adventist study in loma linda, where the group including fish living longer and healthier than the strictly plantbased group.
You done Fantastic with plantbased for your age. The astronauts also got bone loss and they say to eat 6-8 prunes daily are good for your bones Raw calcium tablets,VitK2 and VitD also good but I thinkTofu, temped and soymilk are good. I got Osteoporosis/arthritis and fall quite a few times but really only thin hairline fractures but more bruises, yes every body says eat animal products, but there protein comes from the grass they eat?. I am 70 and feels very well, but goodluck😊
Thank you so much, Chelsea! Have done your program for the last six weeks and IT WORKS! Would recommend this way of eating to anyone. Love to see the what I eat in a day videos from you! So encouraging! So glad to have found you and your wonderful program! ❤
Congratulations on your journey 🎉What is your Pre-workout powder called and how does it help you?🎉 You are such an inspiration to SO many women! Luv Ya!🎉❤
I was watching one of your videos yesterday, can't remember which one, in which you did a very short impression of Dr, Michael Greger, who is one of my favorite people in the world. It was brilliant! You need to do an entire video using his voice! I predict that he would love it. 😂❤
I love the what I eat and do in a day video. Gonna have to seek out smoked hummus. Sounds delicious. I used to get on the internet every single night b4 bed. It actually made me tired. Slept great😴
I’ve started mixing my morning coffee with ice and a plant based protein shake. It has helped me get more protein into my diet. Now that I’m officially a senior citizen my doctor recommends more protein to maintain muscle mass.
Is it ok to eat this way and still have a little extra virgin olive oil? I love a big salad and I make my own dressing with 1 tbs of oil. Otherwise I don’t use any oil unless a tiny bit to sauté onion in a soup. I just feel like it brings out the flavor. One thing I won’t do is add avocado if I use the oil in salad dressing.
I don’t workout (I should but I haven’t really made the time for it in years). I’m 48 year old female and I do put protein powder in my smoothies but not everyday, just when I want something more filling/substantial. I only do a half scoop though per smoothie. I’ve not gained any weight and its been about 7 years of this. I’m about 105lbs so no, I don’t believe you’ll gain weight just from protein powder. Everything else combined makes the difference.

Not subscribing to another’s constraints is such an important point in all areas of life. Thanks for articulating it so well.

@@Laura-je2uw 😂😂😂😂 oh ok 🤣
I bet you if you did the opposite. A animal based diet like the carnivore diet you would see improvement.
What acid environment have you created? With what diet?

Love this series! Training for a 100 mile ultra so I am really enjoying a healthy plant based diet with performance in mind. Exactly what I need!
Put chickpeas or white beans into your smoothies, it bulks it out with protein and is a meal!

@@taniaallan5702 yes, as long as you don't take in a lot of calories I guess it's fine.
Wouldn't I loose muscle again if I then someday I would stop taking the extra protein and only eat "normal amounts" from my regular diet?
If you’re still strength training, and eating enough calories, no.
