I’m surprised you didn’t include nursing. Nursing is a very flexible career. There are many different paths a nurse can do. My mom is a nurse and she has worked medical surgical, rehab, nursing home, same day eye surgery, and she now works from home as a telenurse. Nursing also allows people to work as legal nurses, travel nurses, nurse practitioners, research nurses, and the possibilities are endless.
Agreed! Flexibility and stability are probably the best aspects of working as a nurse. One thing my instructors mentioned all of the time was: nursing is flexible, you don’t HAVE to work in a hospital if you don’t want to.
Thank you Shane! Тhe logical continuation for this video could be "The MOST Flexible College Degrees". It would be nice to see something like this in your performance.
This is LITERALLY the video I have been looking for. Looking to make a change that doesn’t tie me down to a specific area; hits the nail on the head. Thank you. Shane.
Im on my junior year of my Marketing Bachelors Degree and im currently working as a Social Media Marketing Manager for my university part time while doing school, just landed an internship with a B2B SaaS tech company local to my area. Absolutely love what I do. Highly recommend getting into Marketing if you are a creative and sociable person.
I know marketing and communications are similar, so what do you think about studying social media communications. I believe marketing is more sales/business and communications is studying the way people buy and think. Please any advice will be helpful?
@@theeemnm I'm doing a BS in Digital Audiences. It's essentially digital marketing, but they don't call it marketing because it's from the mass communication department in the university. They focus more on the people, growing audience, and the way they think instead of the business department. I think it is more important because you don't really need to take classes like finance, statistics, and general marketing to do digital marketing.
Could you make a video about college degrees that are not so common? I feel like you talk a lot about common majors like finance, biology, psychology, computer science and so on, but I would love to hear what you have to say about less common degrees like linguistics and graphic design. 🙂
If you can't logically reason out and research careers yourself - you're going to have a very bad time in life. GOOGLE is your friend. Why do you need some person who you don't know to tell you about those degrees when you have access to the most powerful research tool the world has ever known.....the internet. MY GOD - STOP being lazy and do your own research! Holy shit....what is wrong with you idiots today?! Are you so used to being spoon fed every piece of information that you seriously can't even think for yourself and form your own opinions based on research YOU DID? IF that's a YES then you should study logic and critical thinking FIRST - ThEN do your own research.
can you divide your videos with those chapter thingies? as a person with crippling adhd i find it hard to focus on the whole video. seeing the bullet points in the description would help a lot of people
Can confirm the data analyst flexibility! Graduating w/ my degree in an unrelated field in two days, but that Data Analyst certification I got during the summer got me a remote job at my university that started at 10 hrs/week. A month in I got offered double my hours and now a full time offer from the team starting next year! Adding those skills and having that small chunk of 6 months of experience has allowed me to start being picky about my offers. 15/10 worth it, these skills combined with whatever knowledge you already have is a great way to stand out. Take it from a chronically ill person with ADHD, it's doable!
Can you tell me more about a data analyst? Where can you get training for a certificate if you've been out of college for a long time? I need a job where I can make my own hours to manage my medical condition, it sucks to not be healthy.
Hey, is PLC - programmable logic control good to study? Or is DevOps engineering or software development better? Which one of them is more flexible and stable for future?
I need a little help because I’m coming to different country.I have evaluated my degree here in Finance, now for earning a better job is required to finish a degree here ,but who’s the best field is better than the other as well?
Thanks so much Shane great video. I'm currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science and Engineering with Specialization in Data Science but I am confused what to do which field to go data analyst or data scientist or machine learning or any other fields under data science after completing which is better and more flexible please help.
Become a data engineer, that opens ways for you to transition into Data scientists or a Data Analyst, or even an ML engineer. That's the best career if you wish to have some flexibility in the roles.
It is good that you realize that these conditions can affect you. Many people pretend that they will not, but if you are a tech worker, you will probably be affected by conditions affecting other tech workers, especially when conditions affect a large proportion, such as the conditions we are seeing now. I would suggest that those interested in tech get broad technical training. For example, if you get a computer science or software engineering degree accredited by ABET, you will be able to not only get a job as a software developer or web developer, but you will find that banks, engineering firms, financial firms, military, science/research labs, etc will be hiring as well. They all need people who are well-trained in mathematics, know how to think logically, and can build programs and software to do all sorts of things. If you get a tech degree that is more lightweight (less math, professors make the assignments too easy, etc), you will have good jobs during your life but will be affected by layoffs and things more easily and your options will not be as broad.
@@prestonbell7314 thanks a lot for your comment! someone also suggested me to maybe mix tech major with a business one so that I'd have more flexibility. what do you think of that?
@@shahanaparveen2413 It depends on your goals. If for example you get a minor in business, you might be a little better at communicating with managers about the technology or understanding what their goals are in order to do your job better. If you want to do this, go ahead. Experience is king and you will pick up that business stuff anyway. If you find that the business courses are getting in the way of your tech classes, it may not be worth it. If you can manage both effectively, it might become an asset at some point. Specializing in a skill is a good thing because you can get very good at something and become reliable in that area. Specialization is also a curse since it limits your understanding of how things fit together. Try to find the balance.
DO NOT do biomedical. My bestie did it and it kinda ties you down a certain career path. I did chemical, don't be fooled it's like 80% physics, 15% maths, and only 5% chemistry XD. It's alright I guess, and you have more options. Mechanical is by far the most flexible choice in my opinion....they can go anywhere
Hey man, I’m currently a freshman in college about to enter my second semester and I still have no idea what I want to do. I was thinking communications or political science because it would allow me some flexibility in my career. Any advice?
Shane has a few videos talking about different majors and political science and communications tend to score low on the totem pole. The main issue with communications major especially is that it helps with many soft skills, but doesn't add many hard skills. If you are in college, but find a intern or a job somewhere that you can sit in a position that will bring about some hard skills, then either one of the majors would work, but most majors will work if you find the right job and right experience.
@@alexnewsome5111 To me the major isn’t as important as some people think. If you have the connections you can really work in whatever you want and I feel like an easy major like communications would allow me to be as versatile as possible in any career of my choosing.
@@keithftw1175 you can't work everywhere with just connections. There are industries that require a degree minimum like tons of engineering, medical and other type of fields. But there are of course jobs where u would be able to get in with just connections but at that point why pick a shittier degree with less chance of getting a good job then getting a degree that isn't hard that has more work opportunities like something in business. Unless ur passionate about those degrees I guess but if u just do it "because it's easy" than it's kinda a waste.
Also with a respectable major you have more chance to work in a lot of different fields where u can be more versatile than someone who did an easy degree that isn't well respected.
I started thinking about this in the beginning of my senior year in college. The path I was on wasn't flexible at all and I changed course two quarters before graduating. Immediately went back to school for more two years for a career that was flexible. 8 years later, I'm very happy with that decision
