i recently just lost a friend because one of my old friends who i found out was a narcissist the hard way is still going on a schizophrenic rampage about how im evil. the first time he went on a rampage, he made everyone close to me hate my guts. i theorize this was because i was getting the most attention at the time, and for someone who was as popular as him, he perceived that as a threat to his own popularity... in middle school. worst part was, i was only popular among my friends, not in school. but long story short, he would use anything and everything he could find about me, stretch the truth to the point where its just a complete and utter lie, and tell that lie he convinced himself of to everyone close to me and eventually, they hated me. i eventually got them back after telling them what was true and what wasn't, which was really just what wasn't, and they felt pretty neutral towards him, except after he caught wind of that conversation, which he decided was even more evidence against me, and proceeded to make ME apologize to HIM. its been almost a year and i see him every day, but ive never said a word. but since then, while my relationship with my friends was damaged, they still somewhat liked me, i just never talked to him again. until around a week ago, when one my friends said that we shouldnt be friends, even though he says he likes me and thinks im chill. i honestly expect him to come back after he realizes how much of a genuinely terrible person, beyond saving, the narcissist is.
I like your insight and the weight you put upon understanding. I think it's incredibly important to have a mindset such as this. There is a quote from Dune that I really like that I use as a system to understand people and where their morality lies. It goes: "respect for the truth comes close to being the basis for all morality... This becomes profound thinking when you realize how unstable 'the truth' can be". Family will send some flowery texts misleading their intentions and the truth and urge you to do things for them "because that's what family does" while twisting their knife in it simultaneously and it disgusts me. There is no rationality or reasoning to be had with some of these ppl either simply because they don't have the capacity for it. Ignorance is fucking bliss and hell's favorite contributors are those who think like this. I'm sorry you had to deal with such a nasty case. It's especially unfortunate if it is someone you have to interact with frequently, as the obvious solution is just distancing yourself ofc. I'm glad I can distance myself mostly from this family manipulator of mine but I hope you can do the same for your case.
