  • How to grow Plum Trees from seed!
Another video in a new series about growing plum trees - or at least my second attempt at it! The first one failed because I transplanted the germinated plum seeds before the roots were large enough to adapt from the ziploc bag into soil. I've learned my lesson and I've restarted the series.
🔴This update is at the trees' 19 month mark. In the last video, he was 16 months old and I had just planted him into the ground. Looks like the acclimation process (transplant shock) is over and done with and he is really starting to take off now - reaching up to more than 7 feet tall!
The winter freeze made me worried about this young plum sapling but he did just fine! In fact, he broke his buds early this spring right along with all of my peach trees. I'll also be updating his companion tree (the one that looks like a peach tree oddly enough).
    Thanks for watching!

    Other thoughts:
    1) One of the Saplings appears to have Peach tree leaves? Is it going to be a peach tree or do the leaves just look like a peach tree's leaves but likely a plum hybrid?
The plum seeds that I am using in this series were purchased from an organic grocery store but I think these may have been hybrids now that I see the two types of plums (one may be a peach tree) growing. I left the plums in the fridge for more than 3 extra months - a form of stratification, if you will.
After several months in the cold fridge (when they were near rotting) I removed the seeds. Then I used a small hammer to crack the seed shell and remove the actual seeds.
Next, I tested the seeds for viability by soaking them in water for about an hour to ensure the seeds sank (this usually means that they are viable seeds).
I then used the wet paper towel/ziploc bag method to create a mini greenhouse for them and placed them in a warm dark place.
Finally, after 3 weeks, 2 of them sprouted. I waited another week to ensure the roots were healthy enough and there was some green seed leaves emerging before I transplanted them.
It's been 3 months now and both are doing well.
One I topped for a test to see how it grows compared to a non-topped one.
I am excited to see how these plum trees grow over the next several months.
    Thanks again for watching!

Even if that tree is part peach, the resulting fruit will probably still taste more like a plum. Plum flavor is pretty dominant in hybrids, which is why Pluots, Apriums, and Cherry Plums taste much more like plums than their other parents.

Got my Peach tree in the ground this summer... Looks fantastic! REALLY REALLY put on a lot of growth! (Of course when I planted it I half-filled the hole with some top notch fertilizer and bunny manure)...
It's almost 3 years old, but it got beaten up by Spider Mites and Mealies over the winters that I had it indoors... Last winter it was wintered outdoors under a dome and in a pot (sunk into the ground).. Survived the winter wonderfully and should now be ready to take on a full Canadian Winter...
I have an Apricot tree, but it seems to have died... The Jade Crab Apple I had also died, which was beside it.. NO idea why.. It just died :(
Not happy about the Apricot tree dying, will definitely have to try again ... Going to have to call the Nursery where I got it to find out why...
I can't get over your Plum tree, though. Just beautiful! You really do a have a way with plants, definitely!
Keep up the great content Rob! Waiting patiently for your next updates..

Your trees look great but, I have a crazy question about your peaches and is this: how you get so pretty nice peaches without any Sickness on them? Like glue drops, worms or holes into. Thank for your time and help in this situation.

The plum that looks like a peach is actually the more interesting of the two in my view. Since the seed came out of a plum, it might be a hybrid between a plum and a peach, but it won't be a peach. I've only recently learned that plums and peach will hybridize under special circumstances. I've also heard that the hybrids can sometimes make very good and very different fruit. But I would be willing to bet that plum and peach are far enough apart for a fair number of them to be sterile.

I am far more interested in the plum that might have been crossed with a peach. I did not even know that was possible. Or did you just mix up a peach with your plum?

  • @RCCRAYZ
    @RCCRAYZ 3 года назад

Is not a peach tree. If you got it from the original 4 seeds then it's a plumb. Not to mention wherever it came from it was probably on a orchard probly got cross pollinated with another variety of plum or maybe a cherry, so the leaf characteristics resemble the other parent more then the plum. But you will probly get plums from it.

He will fatten up and strengthen more of you trim him shorter. Than the tree will put more energy into rooting and thickening instead of growing taller

The little one is definitely a female plum tree, you can tell by the leaves. It will never do well away from other plum trees. To test the theory on its gender put it close to another plum tree, you will see its leaves turn up. Leave it in the pot but eventually you will notice that the leaves will reach out to touch the other plum tree sorta like a caress. I have talked to Druids in England that say fruit trees walk at night. Crazy stuff. But you have to remember that plants are living things. I've also seen experiments where they give off an aura, makes you wonder if they don't have a soul of some kind. Do they scream when you pull off their leaves or prune them :-)
