Growing a Plum Tree From Seed - 27 Months Old

  • How to grow Plum Trees from seed series!
This update is at the tree's 27 month mark. In the last video, he was 19 months old and I had just planted him into the ground 3 months prior, from a pot. Looks like the acclimation process (transplant shock) is over and done with and he is really starting to take off now - reaching up to more than 8 feet tall!
The winter freeze made me worried about this young plum sapling but he did just fine! In fact, he broke his buds early this spring right along with all of my peach trees. I'll also be updating you on what happened to his companion tree (the one that looked like a peach tree oddly enough).
    Notes:
The plum seeds that I am using in this series were purchased from an organic grocery store but I think these may have been hybrids now that I see the two types of plums (one may be a peach tree) growing. I left the plums in the fridge for more than 3 extra months - a form of stratification, if you will.
After several months in the cold fridge (when they were near rotting) I removed the seeds. Then I used a small hammer to crack the seed shell and remove the actual seeds.
Next, I tested the seeds for viability by soaking them in water for about an hour to ensure the seeds sank (this usually means that they are viable seeds).
I then used the wet paper towel/ziploc bag method to create a mini greenhouse for them and placed them in a warm dark place.
Finally, after 3 weeks, 2 of them sprouted. I waited another week to ensure the roots were healthy enough and there was some green seed leaves emerging before I transplanted them.
It's been 3 months now and both are doing well.
One I topped for a test to see how it grows compared to a non-topped one.
I am excited to see how these plum trees grow over the next several months.
    Thanks again for watching!

In glad I found this video. I just bought a piece of land and saw some budding trees this spring that I didn't recognize. As soon as I saw your plum tree, I thought, "that sure looks an awful lot like my little trees." I hope I'm right. Cool video.

I know the pain of losing plants. I lost several in one of my greenhouses during an extra cold night. All we can do is replant/reseed. At least I made a video about it.

@@RobBackyardGardenerr it happens. It's possible that there may have been nothing you could do. Similar to my Jade Crabapple and Apricot tree. Both got some disease, not sure what... The branches shriveled and were weeping sap.. I've never been able to find out what the disease was either 😕

I planted plum trees from seed , currently have two that are just short of 2 years old . The bigger of the 2 started flowering in November and was full of flowers in December. Unfortunately although I saw small fruits all dropped off. The smaller tree had just one flower. I am excited because where I live we have summer all year round. From what I read , it was not possible for the tree to flower without going through chilling hours. I also have nectarine trees that are flowering as well .

Hi Rob. I’m a new sub & have watched a few of your videos, particularly the seed transplanting ones.
Could you make a series for newbies like me with small garden spaces? I’d love to see a how-to from beginning to end for popular edibles like tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers & herbs. (Maybe lettuce too)
Cause I need a lot of help!! Help!!! 😊
I’m curious to see your technique for starting seeds, watering, lighting, temperature, fertilizing, compost, planning, planting outside, spacing, harvesting, end of season clean up, etc. I’d like to see exactly how you make your potting soil for germinating seedlings and for transplanting & how you prepare outdoor soil.
Thank you for sharing. Love your videos!

Bill Higgins I’ve got tons of tomatoes and peppers in the ground - we get early springs here and late winters but the summers are very hot and many plants stop their flowers in the mid year months.

I love these grown from seeds series! That's too bad that the mystery plum tree died. Do you think it was a plum hybridized with a Chickasaw plum? Chickasaw plums are widespread in the southern U.S. and they have narrow long leaves, in fact, their scientific name is Prunus angustifolia, angusti=narrow, folia=leaf.

Hey I know this is an old video maybe you could help? I’ve been growing a plum tree from seed since 2016. I’ve went to college from then and it’s been in my parents backyard. Nothing special about the soil. I must say your plum tree at 27 months is far more bigger than mine is! Mines putting out branches and leads and I’ve been training it since. It’s about 5 foot tall now but still juvenile. I’m thinking it’s a nutrient imbalance that’s not encouraging growth. Could you give me some wisdom?

When do you move him away from the house, to prevent brick burn. Houses are very bad for trees, as well as the roots destroying the foundation.

    • @RobBackyardGardenerr
      @RobBackyardGardenerr  4 года назад

William findspennies I have limited space William so it’s either use what I have or don’t plant trees. I plan on keeping the trees by the house shorter and am keeping the soil moist furthest from the foundation as best as possible. Luckily, fruit tree roots are not as concerning as other types of trees.

I'm tired of taking a lot of them from single pot everyday . Tried

Meena meenu as much as I hate to say it, is try snail poison. I don’t have snail problems where I’m at but I know it works. Or you can try the buried beer cans with water method - makes little drowning pools around the base of your plants.
