- Isaac Porter, MD explains conjunctivitis (pink eye) in this episode of A State of Sight. The conjunctiva is the thin layer of tissue that covers the eye. When this layer becomes infected or inflamed, it can become very red and irritated with a conjunctivitis.
Conjunctivitis can be caused by a virus or by bacteria. Viral conjunctivitis is the most common type, and is usually caused by the same type of virus that can cause a common cold, adenovirus. This usually causes the eye to be red, tearing, and itchy. Unfortunately, there is no direct treatment for viral conjunctivitis with medications or eye drops, and the body must clear the infection itself, usually over a week. Bacterial conjunctivitis can have even more redness and irritation, with a thicker discharge from the eye. If the infection is caused by bacteria, antibiotic drops can be used to clear the conjunctivitis more quickly.
Conjunctivitis is very contagious, so it is important to be careful not to spread the infection from one eye to the other, or to others. If you have conjunctivitis, avoid touching or rubbing your eyes or face, wash your hands frequently, avoid contact with others, and throw away tissues as soon as you use them.

That, you can't do lol. I had conjunctivitis 21 years ago, I was 17 at the time & it was difficult just waking up to crusty shit on my eyelids. What works is a warm wash rag, wait til you can open your eyes. I hated it! The antibiotic drops work. Good luck!

I went to the eye doctor and he prescribed me zaditor, these eye drops had to be prescribed to you by a doctor couple years ago but now they sell them on the counter and work well, ps I use the ones with 0.035% ketotifen fumarate ophthalmic solution

Hi Dr. Porter, I've had an eye infection for about 40 days now. It's not itchy or painful, but my eyes are extremely red and tearing constantly. They're crusty and gross when I wake up. I've gone through 2 bottles of drops that I got from a doctor, but it hasn't helped one bit. I got this a few days before coming down with a cold at Christmas time so I must have touched something infected like the buttons when paying for items at the store. My question is can this cause me long term eye/vision problems? I'm kind of worried about it. The conjunctiva on both eyes is wrinkly and saggy. Thanks for any insights you may have.

@@brahimchab It went away. I went to an opthamologist and he diagnosed me with Scleritis. He gave me anti inflamatory + antibiotic all in one eyedrops and it went away in a week. My eye was feeling better and better each day that passed. Scleritis is vision threatening condition. Glad i'm over it.

I think i have the bateria infection. But i have no dicharge or much watery eye. What i do have is pain in my eye. I have just a specific part where it's red and it hurt. Is this normal?

+TurtleGamer1357 Not sure where it could have come from, but one of the common types of conjunctivitis is caused by the same type of virus that can cause a common cold. We believe that instead of causing a cold, if the virus gets into the eye, it can cause conjunctivitis.

I;ve gotten my infection which is the conjunctivitis viral caused by a virus. My redness is going away but as u said, my vision will still blur. this is my 11-12th day of going through this. How long will i get my full vision back?
+Daniel Christopher Usually, vision returns to normal after conjunctivitis in 1-2 weeks. However, at times there can be inflammation in the cornea from severe viral conjunctivitis that can last 1-2 months or sometimes longer. This can cause the vision to be blurred when it is present. Just had my explanation at 0:55. Started to have running nose about two days ago and inadvertently found out that the pink eyes came along, thought that there might be some connection there, now I've found the answer.
i have it in my left eye only. its not red but its inflamed and watery and it itchs could you tell me which type i have? i read something that said it can be caused by gonorrhea and Chlamydia and that scares me

Hello again, I had pink eye in my left eye before it has passed without spreading I was very happy about that. But this morning (keep in mind about a month later) my other eye was shut closed and I have pink eye. Is this from the same infection or is it a totally different one? What are good preventions? And also I do wrestling don't know if that my have something to do with it.
+Jacob Opela Usually, conjunctivitis is only contagious for about a week or less when the redness is present. An infection about a month later would probably be a new episode. The best methods to avoid conjunctivitis are avoiding contact with others who have it, washing your hands frequently, and avoiding touching your face or eyes. We believe that close contact sports like wrestling can spread conjunctivitis at times. Thanks for the questions, hope you have been doing better!
Cyntia Tapia Severe infections from bacteria, viruses, or parasites can cause scarring, cloudiness, or severe damage to the eye. These are uncommon but can end up with blindness in the worst cases. Thanks for the question!
In my left eye 👁... since a month I feel like there is something ... but when I look into mirror ... Hello Dr. Porter, My doctor prescribed Polymixin Sulf/TMP SOL. For the bacterial infection, pink eye. 72 hours ago. The tenderness is almost gone, redness is now improving and sensitivity to light is gone. Never had any discharge only light tear production increase. Now it seamed when I started taking the medication three days ago I developed light blurriness. Not clear if this is another stage of the pink eye and it all has to run its' course or a reaction to the above med.

I have a little bump on my waterline. It is very itchy... I had pink eye 9 months ago. I changed all my makeup. Can a Viral Pink Eye be healed with antibiotics? Because my friend who I got the Pink Eye from was diagnosed by her doctor that it was bacterial, but my doctor is saying that my pink eye is viral. +Jacob Opela I always advise my patients to try to avoid spreading conjunctivitis to the other eye by washing their hands frequently, avoiding touching their eyes or face, and to throw away tissues as soon as they use them. This can help lower the risk of it spreading, but sometimes it happens anyway. Thanks for the question.

My right eye is pretty red, but it doesn't itch at all. When I've woken up the past two days my eyelashes were almost glued shut with a crusty discharge.

+theredlionheart1 I don't know of any natural cures for conjunctivitis, but our patients often feel that cool compresses can make the eyes feel more comfortable when they are bothered by conjunctivitis. Most of the time, it just takes time for it to clear. Thanks for the question!

Jyotika Verma With a severe viral conjunctivitis, there can be inflammation in the cornea that persists after the infection is cleared. Steroid eye drops can help improve this inflammation, or at times we wait for it to clear on its own. With the steroids, it usually improves in a week or less, but then it can return after the steroids are stopped. This inflammation can cause decreased vision as well. Hope it improves for you!

I had the 'pink eye' for 4 days. I went to A&E on the 5th day and they gave me antibiotics (choramphenicol). It's not been 9 days. It got better after 2 days, then got worse on the 9th day (today). I have some left over inflammation over the cornea after viral conjunctivitis and it's giving me a slightly blurry vision on my right eye.
I consulted someone and they told me that there is no cure for this and it shall be something which will remain for the rest of my life.

Hello doctor. I had viral conjuctivitus for 18-20 days. My lymph nodes were swollen near the ears. But now my eyes are not red and not at all watery. But now my right eye has blurriness. I need help my eye doctor prescribed me drops for this and it didn't go away then he prescribed me moxifloxacin and on both I got really bad headaches but moxifloxacin worked better however I still have the problem even after the treatment. +Alyza Espino When the conjunctiva is significantly inflamed, there can be swelling that looks like nodules inside the eyelid. Medically, we call these follicles or papillae and they are usually a sign of infection, inflammation, or irritation.
My right eye is kind of red and antibiotic drops don’t work and I have a rash that has gotten worse over the month my eye has been slightly pink. I have no idea what it is. There’s no discharge from my eye and it doesn’t burn or itch it’s just slightly red/pink.

I also started taking zyrtec because i was having horrible allergies weeks before this infection in my eye and didn't know if that was the cause it has helped but i still wake up with the swelling crusted over eyes. Ive tried all home remedies ( honey milk, water and apple cider vinegar soon breast milk) it helps and soothe improves but still same symptoms.... i feel defeated and I don't have health insurance, so its becoming expensive

I just went to the doctor yesterday and he said I had viral conjuncitivitis. I've had bacterial before but never viral. He said to wait 10 days and use Clear Eyes 4x a day for comfort. It is unusual to have pain after viral conjunctivitis for more than a week or so. Most patients notice improvement even sooner than this.

My wife's both eyes are red for 5 days now. So we went to the doctor, she said it's a viral conjunctivitis. But my wife doesn't have discharges. Every after reading, or watching television her eyes gets really red. We are uncertain if the doctor was really sure.
