I was a 10 year old Islanders fan watching this series and remember how difficult it was for a good Islanders team to win in Toronto. That Toronto crowd was loud and fired up. Mike Palmateer had a very good series against the Islanders. The Islanders could not win in Toronto. They were manhandled by a physical Leafs team. When Lanny Mcdonald scored the overtime goal to beat the Islanders it really stung. It was almost painful loss for the franchise. A lot of Islanders fans though they had a good chance to win the Cup that year. It was even more painful losing to the rival Rangers the following year in the semi finals. But these losses built character in the Islanders franchise and they ultimately won a Stanley Cup in 1980. Great memories.
Toronto Maple Leafs were a tough team that year. I was a kid delivering the NY Daily news at the time of this series. I believe the sports headlines were "Islanders choke" after they lost G7., but then again the Daily news was a Rangers paper. Great job IslandersPride. More old Islanders games please. I love them.
@@leafyutube it was a tough time with the Powerful Habs, Flyers, Bruins, Isles...Leafs came close to beating the Flyers in the 76 qtrs and had to face the Dynasty Habs in 78 semi finals and 79 qtrs.
@@leafyutube The Leafs got those few players the next year with names like Lorne Stamler,Gary Monahan,Dave Hutchison and Dave Burrows all Roger Neilson plumbers. The Leafs finished one game above .500 and were knocked out 4-0 by Montreal in the quarter-finals,Neilson got his butt fired and the rest was Maple Leaf history (misery).
@@RickyMoszczynski Lorne Stamler, Gary Monahan, Dave Hutchison and Dave Burrows are totally not what I mean when I said a few players away. Those types of players are a dime a dozen.
I had a strong sense after the hard fought 1977 Stanley Cup Playoff series against the Canadiens that the Islanders were going to win the Stanley Cup in the next few years and they did that exactly 3 years later in 1980. There was something different about this Islanders team from what I saw from other NHL teams with the exception of the Bruins. The one other NHL team besides the Bruins in the late 1970's that frightened me the most facing in the Stanley Cup Playoffs were the Islanders.
This series was the best thing that ever happened…to the Islanders.

The Leafs were only a few players away, but then the idiots led by Harold Ballard blew it all up.

A bit of trivia. The person sitting with the Canadian Prime Minister was the Very Rev Bruce McLeod, former Moderator of the United Church of Canada.
The Omen child's father @1:30.
