- Not many companies make solid body nylon string guitars. Fortunately for us, Harley Benton makes one that is incredibly affordable! Joining me on this review is classical guitarist Dr. Hugo Nogueira. He's lending me his masterful command of nylon strings so we can demo this fascinating guitar.

Off the guitar for a second. Dr Hugo's got some amazing skill!
I'm insanely cool to see someone so proficient in his field get a go at affordable gear. Then you can really show how good the stuff is. Hugo is insane.
I could listen to this guy play all day. Off the charts
One of the only channels that actually got a classical player to show this guitars colours. Thank you
I love that guitar it looks small enough to be considered a travel guit. I'm not a strong nylon fingerstyle guitarist but sometimes noodling around on an instrument not suited to your style can be inspirational.
No better way to demo that guitar! Great hearing him play and his thoughts on this guitar
Thank u for sharing this gentleman's talents with us. Amazing control.
My guitar collection has grown EXPONENTIALLY thanks to you.
That's what I like about you MAX. Find something outside your style.. don't matter. Bring in someone who can demo it properly, no ego!! Have a great week!!
Gonna order this guitar. This is the 3rd guitar i'm buying based on your recommendation (the 1st was WOLF 750 cherry burst and the 2nd AIO ASG WHITE , both of which i'm crazy about). Also, its nice of you to ivite other guitar players to your channel. Cheers.
Do you still recommend?
I want to get one of these for my brother. It's such a pretty guitar and for the price sounds so good.
what a beautiful instrument.....and the demo from the Dr really shines. Those are works of art right......those instruments.....?
I just bought it thanks to your review: thank you!
I use a Yamaha THR5 amplifier at home and they are perfect together
On account of your review, my new HB Nashville nylon is on the way, Thanks Max!
Where did you buy it? Hook me up
@@saulcantu347 thomann, obvio
Hugo is jawdropping amazing. The guitar is one more great statement from HB
Thanks for the review Max. This guitar has been on my short list for a couple of years. I'm no doctor, but, I know sweet when I see it! Thomann has had an acoustic version as well for a while now. I salivate every time I see them!
Great intro! Can't deny the sulties and warmth of nylon! I first started on a nylon, Ok it was from Kmart!
Thanks Hugo and Max!
Be Well Brother!
Steven mGyori a lot better than mine, I literally got my nylon at the dump. I went to throw some trash away with my uncle and I just saw it there with a minor break. $5 glue later it was working like new.
Well done @Max and Dr. Nogueria. Good review and demo. This guitar sounds best when the low frequencies below 80Hz are severely rolled off.
I have not done enough nylon string playing to warrant buying an expensive nylon string guitar but for the price point of this guitar and the quality it's worth a few hundred beans just to have it available in the home studio to spice up a track on a song or just to have to play something different. Your review and the demo by Dr. Hugo has convinced me to purchase one. I look forward to receiving and playing it. Thanks again !
Dr Hugo is a great player. Thanks for having him on the channel. The guitar looks and sounds very good. Maybe it'll be Willie Nelson's next guitar when Trigger self destructs.
Nope. Told me he would stop playing. Bet he keeps singing. Willie is one of a kind. Dr. Hugo Congrats! Best wishes.
I've been considering a Taylor T5, this is intriguing.
Thanks, Max.
Get both. Play T5 sober. HB when impaired. Cheers! Cheap insurance.
Yes no doubt . SOLD .Amazing playing, thank you for the video . .
Max - Great to see a demo of an affordable electric Classical Guitar! Can you PLEASE measure the distance from the bottom of the 6th string to the top/face of the guitar? I play with a plastic thumb pick, and if there is not enough clearance, the pick will be hitting the guitar top, particularly since there is not sound hole. FYI - 10mm is not enough clearance.
Also, can you try tapping on the guitar top will your nails, flamenco style? How does it sound? Is there a Golpeador (tap/scratch plate)?
I added a Piezo pickup under the bridge of my Classical Guitar - not easy to find a perfect spot. It sounds great, if you know what a good Classical sounds like and are not afraid to apply a lot of high frequency EQ to get rid picking noises, etc.
Here are some EQ tips.
I run my guitar though a Boss GT-6 effects processor using the following settings on it:
Modeled Amp: Jazz Combo
Preamp: Gain 50, Bass 50, Middle 50, Treble 39, Level 90
EQ Settings: Lo-EQ +3dB, Lo-Mid f 200 Hz, Lo-Mid Q 1, Lo-Mid EQ +2dB, Hi-Mid f 4.00 kHz, Hi-Mid Q 0.5, Hi-Mid EQ -2dB, Hi-EQ -2, Level 4
With these settings, my Classical Guitar (good, custom made) sounds even better than it does acoustically. It is easier to play through headphones due to the higher volume, and records exactly as it sounds. Virtually all the little picking, nail, shifting noises, etc. are gone, as they generally occur in the very high frequencies. It makes me sound better than I actually am. Adding some Lo-EQ boost as described above is necessary to get the proper fullness of a Classical guitar.
No doubt, your mileage will vary, as the way Classical guitars sound varies widely. But, I think you'll find those settings or something similar will get any electric Piezo pickup Classical guitar sounding surprisingly "natural" and it will be much more fun to play.
Thanks Max. I absolutely love your channel!
Not my style, but damn...it's pretty. And the Doctor is a beast on it
I started with nylon and want to go back to a nylon guitar. Dr. Nogueira just stirs up those feels again and why I wanted to play classical. I'm going to take a hard look at this guitar.
I am waiting for this guitar for you to review for years, thank youuuuuuuu !!!!!!!!!!!
You're welcome Rishan!
I just bought an Epiphone PRO1 Classical Nylon String Guitar in Antique Natural at Sweetwater over the Labor Day weekend for only $99. PRO1 Stands for Proprietary Bracing on this guitar. It has a Cedar top, Mahogany back, sides and, neck. Rosewood fingerboard and bridge. Graphtech NuBone nut and saddle. The Nut Width is only 1 3/4". Unlike most Classical guitars that are 2+"s usually. The only thing that lets it down are the Strings and Tuners. But, those are easy and cheap to replace. Your guitar is nice too.
As an electric player - this looks like a good solution for a highly affordable price! Didn't hear much noise from the pickups either.
ah the Folias variation at the beginning, exactly what I needed to hear to determine whether this is something I want to buy since that's always my first move when I pick up a nylon guitar. thank you
Awesome player and a perfect demo. I better leave that style of playing to the experts! Nicely done all the way around. Thanks!
Super handy him being a doc if he gets repetetive strain injury!!Nice playing and guitar.
Thanks for the amazing video, so well made , clean sound and amazing performance 👏👏 That guitar sounds way above the tag price I’m really impressed with Harley Benton waoooo
I bought this guitar because of this video. I was very happy with the fit and finish. However, on first strum... bzzzz! The G and B strings buzz from open to the 4th fret. Even with some truss adjustment (up to full turn) the buzz was still there. The buzz only disappeared after the action required a balance bar and safety net. I contacted Thomman, and after a little back and forth (reasonably so), we resolved the issue.
I've bought other HB items, guitars and speaker cabs alike, and this has been the only issue, which they took care of. Tuning machines, nut and bridge will be upgraded. Nice buy.
Hi Max! That's a realy nice little guitar. I know nothing about classical guitar. I think the over all style and shape of that guitar is much nicer than traditional instruments. reminds me of a less paul. Well you take care Max from your pal Helcat in Australia.
What the fuck. I just spent 800 on a nylon acoustic and this one looks better and almost sounds as good
What are you talking about about.... it sounds like a dog farting.
I’m sure you did good. Enjoy.
This sounds like a nylon acoustic played through a piezo pickup. Not the same. If you've spent that much on a proper acoustic I would expect it to be a solid wood with great resonance and in my opinion a much more beautiful sound than anything like this.
I'm sure that guitar is more of an investment that this harley cheapo. They make good guitars for the price range, lets see how long they last
@@cyanidejunkie A dog farting!!
That's dumb!! Plus there are many factors that account to the sound of a guitar!!
@@cyanidejunkie LOL, haters. So pathetic.
That is beautiful! If I ever wanted a nylon guitar this would be it!
Fantastic!!! Harley Benton is way ahead of the pack in price and performance!!! Keep these cool videos rolling Max!!!😎😁👍🎸
Hey, thanks for that! After watching your vids, I have tried a couple of Harley Benton guitars and they are brilliant! I think you're absolutely fantastic at the guitar,
Nice guitar. Incredible technique from Hugo! Thank you Max for another high quality video.
The thing I hate is those piezo pickups that have SO UNNATURAL sound, even in a good guitar like this.
Fantastic guitar, amazing musician! Thanks for sharing that!
How cool was that opening piece? Gorgeous stuff, thanks Sir Maxalot!
Thanks for another great vid!! Question: I know its meant to be plugged in, but how much does this guitar project unplugged?
I got one. It had issues. The most notable being buzzing from the 5th fret down one all but one string. Truss adjustments didn't work. I suspect poor fret installation and quality control. However, Thomman customer service was great! I ended up getting my money back. Note: I also have an HB 335 copy that is fantastic.
Definitely gonna follow him too. Studying classical guitar and music so another assistant 😌
What is the beautiful piece at 5mins? Mindblowing ❤
Amazing guitar playing.
But also, did you turn down the mids and treble on purpose? It sounds kinda muddy.
Looks like a great option. Wonder how it compares to the Harley Benton Hybrid Nylon NT, which is a semi-hollow body
Amazing! I've been meaning to ask where were the HB Nylon string models. Not only that, it is precisely that style that I was searching for and not regular classic ones. This is awesome and I will definitely get one! My 4th HB hahaha Thank you Max!!
enjoyed the review. Interesting guitar, I too have bought Wolf guitars after your reviews and have a Harley Benton ST-20HSS CA Standard on the way. Looking forward to your next review.
I got turned onto HB through this channel as well. I Bough an SC custom with p90s and now have one of the Nashville Nylons on the way. The best thing about HB that i've noticed is the quality of the gear it comes with. It's almost like they come out of the box with aftermarket upgrades.
Excellent, GM. Just now saw your post. Merry Christmas, man. Christopher Parkening is my favorite guitarist. If you haven't heard his artistry, check him out, bro! He'll bring some light your way and inspiration too.
48mm nut on an acoustic guitar, which this model has, is my favourite width. I have a steel string parlour with a 48mm width which for me is ideal for playing a bit of blues, folk and ragtime.
Oh man that was impressive on Mr.Nogueira's part. With some reverb it would've been sublime.
Sold. Just ordered mine. I know their value for money. Thanks Hugo and Max
It sounds pretty solid just going direct. I'm shopping around for something to use for musical theater, and I feel like with a little EQ and reverb, maybe an impulse response loaded up, in the context of a mix it would sound absolutely amazing.
Hugo's finger picking is other worldly! 😵
Nice I like it. It does have a 48mm nut width like a flamenco style nylon string acoustic.
The guitar seems nice, and if they had a steel string, I'd buy it through your link, because it's so thin, but seriously, thanks for dragging the Dr. onboard! Real flamenco players aren't that common, even where you are.
Jatoba is a really nice, and hard fretboard wood. I can even be heard to say on occasion that it's better than rosewood, if you like a hard board with out too much open grain. I have to wonder if HB might dye theirs, though, not that it's bad.... the stuff gets dark over time anyways, just not that dark from what I've seen.
Man, I hope you were able to grab some lesson time from that guy before or after you made the vid. There aren't even flamenco players where I live,
Dr. Noguiera is an awesome finger stylist! If only I had taken classical guitar lessons back when I was younger... Oh well! It's always nice to see someone proficient in this style.
That's really cool of you to realize your limitations and be honest with your audience. I appreciate that. Great video!
Thanks for this review; have been looking at this for a long while. One question not answered would be how it sounds unplugged - just to gauge its use as a silent practice guitar.
Awesome....thank you!
I like this guitar.. the deal breaker for me is the bridge. While it doesn't seem to have and impact here. Classical guitars generally have a square bridge that keeps the looped strings uniform. I'd probably opt for the Ibanez option
thx again, don't know it exists, wanna buy one. one thing missed: why not playing any cord and sounded oud ? i know its the style he played, but whith a chord played its easier to find if these Instrument are something for me. Most guitarist just rhythmn-G. like me. Solos are hard to earn.
Great review and this guy and this guitar, both awesome👍 I've a question concerning his only complaint, about the plug input, never heard of right angle plug? Otherwise it was s good review, I loved it👍🙏 thnx, Richard.
Hi i was review the guitar,,i do have one, love it it took some time to break my figers in,cause of the nylon strings and wide neck, but gmax, did u check the med,and treb volumes, the swichlike a stop half way i notice it,so i keep on playing with it to get my self the right settings perfect guitar, stil love to owm the tele acousticsonic from fender, but price to high
Nice video! This guitar looks like "gift" for that price actualy.
Is it me or this things sounds muddled. It would be nice if it was a semi hollow. In case you missed it this thing can only played plugged in.
The main reason im getting one is for studio recording. I love the idea of having a nylon, wired right in, that i can add my own reverb and signal chain to. It's a very unique sounds with a ton of uses.
I’m wondering if putting nylon strings on the steel version of this guitar could be a good option.
Exactly what I was looking for ... Thanks!
For some reason Harley Benton follows me on ig. Don't know why, but I won't complain !
Beautiful guitar. I'm not interested in finger style classical but it looks gorgeous.
I would be interested in knowing the amp settings for this performance. It had a beautiful tone. For comparison, the Chet Atkins Gibson version, if you can find it, is about 10X the price.
Amazing player. I love the look of the guitar. Sounds good too.
can you tell me what the top left guitar is at 3:50? looks kinda like the ritz MAB used for speed kills
Great review on another nice instrument !
Rory Gallagher once said that you are only half playing guitar if you only play with pick.
The only problem is the shipping and handling. I never played a nylon string until a year ago and I love it. I bought a Washburn similar but nicer. The shipping money I Sayed from the shipping cost toward a new guitar. I'm happy😎
Sounds excellent!!!!......great vid today - really enjoyed it!!!
I think its a great guitar for its price. You can amplify it, probably without feedback, that’s a thing. However, be carefull with the amplification. Generally people want more high and brightness on a guitar, but with acoustic and classical guitars this tends to sound unnatural and “plastic”. So turn down the brightness and and don’t turn up the treble to much. There is allready enough in there. This way the guitar should sound great with amplification, allmost like real.
Darn nice guitar it has a very solid look and style.. the sound was as expected, but would like to hear a few more trials on that model for its range of sound options.
It sounds ok amped but I'd have liked to have heard it unamped next to a regular classic acoustic.
Can't seem to find this guitar to possibly purchase it. ??? Any clues???
With 3xl hands, the nut with of 48 mm is interesting! The steel string version is....43 ... Great sound, low price, yes!
The one spec I would like to know where it is made
I hate intros, but LOVE this one.
What kind of a case do you keep it in? I can't find a hard-shell that fits it right.
You have a fantastic deep voice.
Hugo Nogueira is a great guitar player.
Great find, glad I didn't blow 2k on an acoustasonic, 👍😎
Ps the black version according to it's description has an equalizer
This guitar is nothing like an acoustisonic.
@@bgilley8199 well no it hasn't the features, however this guitar is not as bulky as a standard acoustic, and it actually looks and sounds good and at that price point well it's a bargain and a good alternative, to each his own
@@WarlockCore it's a nice guitar, I'm just saying it's nothing like the acoustisonic. It's a nylon string solid body classical guitar.
agreed nothing like the very overpriced acoustasonic
@@WarlockCore how is the Acoustisonic overpriced? It's not made to be a budget priced instrument. If you can design and produce a made in the US instrument that does what the acoustisonic does, and is built as well, go to it. It just sounds like you're mad because you can't afford it.
The Doc has a sick right hand. Invite him over and interview him, man!
"Fast right hand" "interview". *pornhub intro*
@@nightdragon1528 XD
Beautiful intro!
have you tried playing it as you would a steel string and with some dist. on it? saw a few vids of a guy doing that and it was very good.
I have to tell you....! Between your phenomenal Guitar skill and Dr. Hugo’s.... ,
You sir by far have one of the most musically talented channels on RUclips......! 🎶🎸🎸🎸🎵
Professor Jeff Galey, ( The Jeff Galey Channel ) 🎓
Hey Max... I see you are playing a lot of HB guitars... have you had the chance to try their attenuator?
Wow Phenomenal Classical Player! Reminds Me of the Tone I get with My Epiphone "Chet Atkins" Classical Electric. Great Video as Usual Max.....
ok but i was thinking that it has an ebony fretboard. you didn't answer that on this video.
Great review. I love the way it looks and of course, the price is very tempting, but what really struck me is how good the piezo sounds. It's much warmer and less compressed-sounding than most others I've heard, even on much more expensive instruments.
Me too! The first thing I noticed is that it sounds almost exactly as a standard-bodied nylon acoustic captured by a mic and that says a lot about the pickup.
Good sound. How it would sound with steel or brass strings?
Why do I see a real close resemblance to the Gianinni Nashlyn? Which I owned and loved.
