  • Exploring an abandoned asylum in Ireland
The hospital, which was designed by William Murray. The plan was influenced by the "panoptic" prison concept, the principle behind the layout was to allow the governor and his turnkeys to occupy the central structure with radiating wings which they could monitor and administrate life within the institute, the arrangement allowed the wings to be veiwed from the centre, while access was only possible from one wing to the other by passing through the centre.
Opened in 1833. New wings were completed in 1871 and 1882.As it expanded conditions became very overcrowded with nearly 1,200 patients by the early 1900s and it accommodated some 2,000 patients by the 1950s. After the introduction of deinstitutionalisation in the late 1980s the hospital went into a period of decline and closed in 2013.

The layout of that building would be enough to drive a person insane. Great video.

Why does the HSE /government allow such buildings to deteriorate in such a manner. They just walk away and almost not bother to close the doors. This is typical of numerous public buildings around Ireland. Old schools, army barracks, old asylums, garda barracks, period houses and property acquired by and in the care of OPW. There seems to be nobody in charge

Mind you don't step on any needles going around buildings like that, wear a shoe that's got metal in the sole
