Margaret this is so informative. Please keep us up to date on these studies. I have started the vibration therapy I discovered through your presentations. I am 75 with osteoporosis but no fractures.
I would love to purchase a LIV platform, but sadly at $3000, Marodyne is out of the question. It seems like SOMEONE could make a more affordable device that meets the LIV requirements. Even Marodyne could make a "home" model ($200-500) and have the current one be a "pro" model for gyms, PT clinics, etc. I will continue to search for a comparable LIV platform that's affordable for the average person. :(
That price is rediculous. Please check into different rebounders. Most come with handles to hold onto and you can buy a tape to follow. Mine for a top of the line was about 600§. They are amazing for building strength.
I know how is anyone but someone pretty well off able to afford this device, I have oestepenia and have been on alendronic for 20 plus years, would help me but cant afford it
The Zaaz is a little less expensive. There are much cheaper ones, but likely they don't oscillate. Insurance companies often reimburse (get doctor's scrip first) if you buy a Zaaz at Costco.
I won’t take pharmaceuticals for this. My understanding is drugs don’t build quality bone. I wanted to hear more about LIV. His support for drug useage was disappointing.
I really appreciate this discussion. I have a very low intensity platform that I was going to give to my parents who are in their 80s. I purchased the platform for myself but is too gentle for me. My plan was to see if my parents could use it because they have settled into a very sedentary lifestyle. This is not the aggressive ones you see in the stores nowadays but you can definitely feel it. I think I will give it to them and monitor them daily. My Hope Is that this will stimulate something in them not only physically but mentally. They literally just sit on the couch and watch TV all day and night. This thing is the only device is the only thing I can think of that they can do while watching television.
My husband & I (healthy 60s) use the Marodyne LiV and Greg's parents (healthy 85 and 90) do, too. Shipped a couple months ago; built in Germany. I use it 10 minutes 2-3 times a day spaced 3.5- 4 hours apart. The amount of vibration is specifically designed for effectiveness and safety. It is not done with vibration alone , remember people have all kinds of illnesses , so it would be a good start just to recommend a diet also for the purpose of connecting the dots !
Thank you so much for such a great interview! I am interested in the vibration plate specifications. Would a plate that has a Frequency of 4-15Hz, a 1 G force and an Amplitude of 0-10 mm work for bone growth? Or do you need something that is at 30 -50 HZ with a lower G force? Does the machine need to pulse or can oscillation work as well? Thanks
I had high hopes for the platform, for easing my torn rotator discomfort and TMJ. My machine can move side to side, up and down, or just vibrate. While in some respects it feels good to use, I am noticing problems with my ears during and after use which might keep me away from using it. It also seems to make my TMJ worse. Vibration plates me be a godsend for plenty of folks, but perhaps for some they can be more harmful than beneficial, increasing ringing in ears and vertigo for those who are reporting such side effects as well as other negative results.
Hi Mason. You should be cautious with the high intensity vibration platforms and their side effects. Explained in these two posts: melioguide.com/osteoporosis-exercise-equipment/whole-body-vibration-therapy/ melioguide.com/physical-therapy-continuing-education/whole-body-vibration-therapy-contraindications/
I use the low Intensity platform at the Shiley Fitness Center in Torrey Pines. It is good for improving balance and promoting lymphatic flow in the legs. Low frequency vibration likely stimulates the bones to promote increased bone strength and density. I didn't understand this machine 15 years ago. After my Dexa scan, I did a lot of research. I wish that I had used the platform 15 years ago. Stimulating fast-twitch muscles in the legs improves balance and circulation. Just those two benefits are worth it at age 75. I also take Forteo and supplements. Older men break their hips and get pneumonia and Covid-19. Your chance of dying from that exceeds that of women's mortality from a fractured hip. Older men need a Dexa and FRAX calculation to assess risk. More is NOT better as far as vibration is concerned. I also get early morning sunlight while shadows are long. Near infrared light stimulates mitrochondria and even bone stem cells and osteoblasts.
This is a great & insightful interview. I really enjoy Dr Rubin's detailed scientific explanations. As a woman in my 50's I have developed osteoporosis as a result of being unable to exercise due to my having acquired Myalgic-encephalomyelitis w/dysautonomia 7 years ago. I was formerly very athletic & am health conscious. I'm seeking therapeutic support beyond pharma & Marodyne LIV may be a solution.
So you’re saying power plate isn’t safe at all? Even at low settings with proper posture. Not standing up straight on it so it doesn’t hit the spine/head? I mean there way not to throw out a 5k machine and actually get some safe workout out of it.

My other one has a handle but with this one it’s not required the platform is wide enough and the length to be able to do more exercises with and without the handle I can do leg lifts. I use it not only for pain relief but also to help me with Diabetes circulation issues. This was a great present to myself!! It is heavy so be aware of that it’s roughly close to 40-50 lbs but still easy to move when needed. Revision 3/1/21 ; it does weigh exactly how their website mentions and really enjoy this machine and they way it shows on the platform areas to put your feet and what type of exercises it is. I have recommended their machine to my co-workers as well as my MT students. Love their customer Service for any questions or concerns very helpful and courteous!
I have been using the Marodyne 1-2 times daily for 6 months to treat severe osteoporosis. Question for you and Dr. Rubin: If I now reintroduce a Bisphosphonate drug into my regimen, will that negatively impact the quality of new bone formation? Thank you so very much for furthering my understanding of ways to support healthy bone and muscle retention in my aging body! I am very appreciative of your direct thoughtful communication with Dr Rubin! Also, I love your other videos!
I would avoid the medication if at all possible. Too many side effects and dangerous possibilities not to mention that as soon as you stop taking the medication, you loose the bone mass that you might have gained from the bisphosphonate. By the way, you don't necessarily gain bone mass from bisphosphonates but it will slow down osteoclastic activity and I believe strengthen the bones. I would look into nutrition, exercise plan from a trainer, supplements and the vibration plate.
Great video! I used a vibration plate prior to my knee replacement. Can I continue using at some time after my total knee replacement? Is this a question I need to ask my surgeon?
I encourage you to speak to your surgeon. You should be cautious about the type and brand of plate you are using. And you should read this post: melioguide.com/osteoporosis-treatment/can-you-use-vibration-plate/

Thank you for the very informative interview. I live in Australia and purchased a vibration platform today, made in Canada with curved edges for higher intensity. I would just like to clarify what numbers constitutes low intensity so I can get the therapeutic exercise for my osteoporosis and osteoarthritis please. I take prolia 6 monthly but only was prescribed it after my diagnosis which I was unaware that it could have slowed the procession to osteoporosis. I fell from an office chair with wheels on before I was diagnosed with OP and put my hand down on a hard floor to instinctively try to stop injury and fractured my radius in 7 places requiring surgery. I am now told I have a 1 in 3 chance of a fracture if I fall. Any helpful information you can give me regarding use of my platform would be gratefully appreciated. Thank you.
I can’t afford $3000 for Dr. Rubins platform. Can you recommend a more affordable option? My gym has a low vibration platform but I have no idea how to tell if it’s 30mhz. Is there a way to check?
Barbara, this product (from what I see of his knock-off competition at Amazon) has been out for awhile & I don't see the inventor, this Dr. Rubin interested in helping any of us that suffer from Osteoporosis/penia by now that can't afford it. No signs of that whatsoever. Did you know that Industrialist and car manufacturer, Henry Ford at first made his vehicles so that only the rich could afford them but then realized he would be better off personally if more ppl could afford his invention. So, Ford priced his new invention where even his own struggling employees could all afford his cars. It changed our world!!! Some ppl are just in this for profit. This doctor could reach out to major manufacturers and have it reproduced so that those who don't have the money--like you & me, could more easily afford it. Coming to YT as a 67yo Osteopenia sufferer, I have been soaking in all these comments from desperate women & some men looking for affordable ways to save themselves from suffering. Absolute suffering that we are damned if we don't take the poison big pharma medicines and we REALLY damned if we take them!! I see a couple of doctors that do nothing but try to promote their own sites for $$$$ they get from subscribers on YT. They have nothing new to share but more confusion. I see by now, this Dr. Rubin is no different. I don't see any signs he has any concerns to help a desperate growing group of humanity here. Rubin is more concerned with profit. I would love to see PROOF I was wrong.
Is a frequency of 30 Hertz the same as saying it is 1g intensity? I found an affordable LIV which has a low 30 Hertz frequency but doesn't mention intensity.
Is pharmacology along with LIV indicated for severe osteoporosis of spine (T score -4.1)? I hesitate to take Evenity but am willing to try it in conjunction with exercise, diet and consider LIV as well. Not using pharmacology may not be an option with a very low bone density score. I am 75 years old and have not been on medication in the past except for 6 months of Actonel (many years ago) which I could not tolerate because of throat irritation.
Margaret, Dr. Rubin says that the knees must be straight for the vibration to go through to the hips and spine. In your weight-bearing aerobics videos, you instruct to bend the knees. Dr. Rubin says that this send the vibration to the knees and the feet. In light of this should I be doing the jumps and the hops, the fast feet and the heel bounces in the athletic level with straight knees rather than soft knees? I am 68 and have exercised moderately most of my life - including lifting. thank you.
Margaret this is the test of my comment from below. I also have spinal stenosis, bulging disc, degenerative disc. I have broken my wrist 2 years ago and have fell about 4 times. I did go to pain management but stopped in June of 20031 because the opiate medicine got o where it just didn't help.. I am so limited with this pain. Would this Vibration Platform be recommended for me with what I have told you? I'm trying to rebuild my muscles with walking and exercise from pt. Hoping some thing like the low intensity Vibratiion Therapy would work for me! Please advise. I also have lost 4 inches in height. Thank you Barbara
Hello Margaret, thanks for your helpful videos..Ive looked and listened but seem to have missed something vital..do you stand straight and feel it to your head, or bend knees and only feel so far up your spine? thanks so much in advance for this...
Hi Robyn. You stand straight. bending your knees weakens the signal. The low intensity vibration platform is safe in this stance, whereas this is not the case with high intensity platforms such as the Power Plate.
You might want to reconsider using a high intensity vibration platform such as the Life Pro: melioguide.com/physical-therapy-continuing-education/whole-body-vibration-therapy-contraindications/
I appreciate your work Margaret, but I don’t understand your dismissal of this question. I have a Sleep Number bed that came with a vibration setting. (No, it is not coin operated like the ones they used to have in cheap motels.). I believe the sales gimmick was that it is supposed to help with circulation and to help you relax before going to sleep. If memory serves, it has two settings (low vs. high). I have only used it once in the 4 years I have had the mattress, but after watching this interview about Low Intensity Vibration Therapy I too am curious if this Sleep Number feature would have the same (or similar) effect as the vibration platform. I have used the platform at a chiropractor’s office in the past, but since COVID I have stopped going to their office. Since I already have the bed, it sure would be a more cost effective option if this feature has similar benefits for bone health compared to investing in a platform for home use. Thanks so much.
Is this good for someone that has had a spinal fusion and has adjacent degenerative disk disease and bursitis? I was just diagnosed with osteoporosis, but am leary about the vibration machines.
I have a sleep apnea device implanted in my chest and can't get an MRI, does the vibration platform affect the device. I have severe osteoporosis and want to try this platform?
Hi Dawn. ANY implant (including total joints) have the same 'answer' to those individuals wondering about low intensity vibration... that the 0.4g acceleration (and deceleration) is far less than the acceleration of walking (and deceleration of heel strike while walking)... which are about 1.2g (and -1.2g)... while running (w/ an aerial phase) can slightly exceed 2g. If you are not so worried about exercise, there is no reason to be too overtly concerned about the Marodyne LIV. All that said, put it into context of a HIGH magnitude vibration (low setting at around 8g)... that would shake fillings out of your teeth and not recommended.
I would like to experience low intensity vibration therapy. I have interocular lens implants from cataract surgery. I understand the danger posed by the higher intensity vibration plates and interocular lens dislocation. Is low intensity vibration safe for people who have had interocular lens surgery?
This is the Hz and Amplitude of the vibration plate I use. Is it considered "low" or "high" vibration? 4hz-40hz & Oscillation 1-12mm Pulsation 1.5mm Linear 8mm
I encourage you to read the article on my site where we discuss the results of LIV in detail. Thank you. melioguide.com/osteoporosis-exercise-equipment/whole-body-vibration-therapy/
So this machine vibratrim 202+1 is not low intensity enough right? It’s higher than 1G Maximum power: 1.5 HP Input voltage: 110 Volt 60Hz Input power: 200W Speed setting: 20 Amplitude of oscillation: 0-10mm. Amplitude (spiral): There is no amplitude for the spiral. It only moves horizontally 2mm. There is no dual vibration on this unit. G Force: 1.5 - 7.5 Gs
You have recommended Juvent vibration machine in the past. Now you are saying there is NO other machine available like Marodyne. Is Juvent not made anymore or not good anymore?
New research is indicating the optimal configuration (clock rate, displacement, etc) to be different than that of Juvent. Marodyne meets the specifications.
In the section where the two of you are discussion why older bodies respond differently to exercise than younger ones, he mentions osteoclasts, which trigger the breakdown of bone. I'm wondering what the function of osteoclasts are, as I assume they have some function that has benefits. Am I wrong about this?
They work in concert with osteoblasts in the maintenance of bone. I encourage you to read this article. melioguide.com/osteoporosis-prevention/bone-quality-osteoporosis/
According to Clinton Rubin, the Mesenchymal stem cells in the bone marrow can grow to tendon cells, bone cells or whatever cells the body is in need of. If this is the case, I wonder if Marodyne LIV can heal knee inflammation and knee osteoarthritis.

How does this compare to jumping on a trampoline use for osteoporosis? How much to the machine cost?
There's a belt coming out some time in 2023 based on the same technology. Osteoboost. The company has a wait list for the product, so this tech is more innovations. ❤
We haven't seen the belt yet. I'll take a look at it then and get back to you with my thoughts.
@@margaretmartinpt - thanks! I'm not sure if I should get the scale or wait for the belt. I was just dxd with osteo (-T3.0) and want to turn this around as much as I can. Always have been athletic, but cycling and not the right weight training, and it is impossible to find a therapist/trainer at my gym or elsewhere that deals with osteo, like the Bone Clinic in AU does, so the plate might help suppliment that. Thanks!
As of 10/2023 have you looked into the Osteoboost Belt? Thank you
Do you know a Physical Therapist /clinic that cares for pt. with osteoporosis in Washington D.C area? Thank you.
Margaret, is the foot massager (in sitting position) and your vibration machine ( standing) has similiar response?
very informative and indeed a deep dive
My plate has a Frequency of 4-12Hz... I am in my 60's .. Is this of any benefit to me at all, or do I need to purchase a stronger one?? Any guidance would be most helpful... Thanks
Great info. Thank you 😊
Glad it was helpful!
Margaret, do you feel like this Low Intensity Vibration Therapy works? Do you plan to get a unit for your patients?
Yes, they have their role in improving bone health. Read my post on the topic. melioguide.com/osteoporosis-exercise-equipment/whole-body-vibration-therapy/
Can you give the details of the platform.
The plate is soooooooo expensive! What is the best low cost alternative.
Is exercising on a rebounder (mini trampoline) good for people with osteoporosis?
There is no evidence that the rebounder improves bone density. ruclips.net/video/xaLIekdLSzo/видео.html

Yes .....it does help. All exercise done safely helps
what does it mean/causes for someone to faint from the vibration plate usage?
well i have a machine(euro body shaper) that goes from 1 to 60 on high and 1 to 60 on lower movement vibration... i am 63 and workout with weights 4-5 times per week pretty intense and also do planking and some jogging plus various calisthenics ... i just got this machine 4-5 days ago and used it a few times on high med and maybe 20...and it seemed to work great, but i may have over done it... i think to much on higher settings for me is not good.i will use it on lower settings maybe 10 mins twice per day...
Hi Micki. I do not know of another vibration platform that conforms with the specifications stated in Dr. Rubin's reserach.
So a power plate move is dangerous?
Are there ever any sale prices or discount codes?
Can this help reverse severe osteoporosis The lowest T-score is a -4.4 at
lumbar 3. The lowest at the hip is a -3.0 at the femur neck. Age 66.
Margaret, can you recommend any Osteoporosis Physical Therapist in the Dallas Texas area?
No, I cannot.
Can you provide a discount code to purchase this vibration machine. It’s so expensive, but it appears to be safe.

Not sure if you can answer this. But I had a stroke 2 years ago can I use a vibration plate?
Hello Margaret, thanks for your helpful videos..Ive looked and listened but seem to have missed something vital..do you stand straight and feel it to your head, or bend knees and only feel so far up your spine? thanks so much in advance for this...
Hi Robyn. You stand straight. bending your knees weakens the signal. The low intensity vibration platform is safe in this stance, whereas this is not the case with high intensity platforms such as the Power Plate.
@@margaretmartinpt Bit straight ending your knees isn’t a great idea. Not to lock them. I have one and most days I on it 15 minutes. Sometimes longer.
Is there a more cost effective device than the Marodyne?
Hi Sandra. Marodyne is the only device I have found that meets the low intensity vibration specifications associated with improved bone health.
Is there data show the LIV plates work? How can I see it? Thanks
Where do I buy a "low intensity" machine . I can't find one. Had to send back because it was wrong one.
You can contact Marodyne here: my-marodyne-liv.btt-health.com/
@@margaretmartinpt thank you. I have notified them.
If I use localized vibration therapy, let's say using a massager gun with same intensity, does it give the same result as whole body vibration plate?
It will not.
Better to rid of all chairs sofas and use floor with low tables.
I have a life pro vibration plate, how can I make sure I have it at the right settings for what you’re talking about?
You might want to reconsider using a high intensity vibration platform such as the Life Pro: melioguide.com/physical-therapy-continuing-education/whole-body-vibration-therapy-contraindications/
2 questions
Is this device safe with L5-Si fusion?
Recently I herniated l3l4 . Safe to use device?
THANK You Margaret !!! 😊💚. (85)
Hi Barbara. You are welcome.
We have a bed frame that vibrates. Does that do the same thing. It is low intensity.
I think you are on the wrong channel, dear.
@@judyamorello2722 I am not familiar with the bed you mention but I think it highly improbable that it will help with bone health.
My goodness - can't he just say yes or no? Does it help/prevent osteoporosis or not????
My question is do I keep my knees bent or straight?
You keep them straight so the signal propagates through your body.
Is there a transcript of this interview with Professor Rubin?
Yes. All of the videos are transcribed on my post: melioguide.com/osteoporosis-exercise-equipment/whole-body-vibration-therapy/
Is LIV contraindicated for health valve insufficiency?
What machine do you recommend?
The Marodyne LiV. Please read my review here: melioguide.com/osteoporosis-exercise-equipment/marodyne-liv-review/
Does vibration helps increase or stimulates the productions of Growth Hormone?
Good question. Exercise does stimulate the production of growth hormone and the vibration platform likely does as well.
Can people with afib use this device?
I would like to experience low intensity vibration therapy. I have interocular lens implants from cataract surgery.
I understand the danger posed by the higher intensity vibration plates and interocular lens dislocation. Is low intensity vibration safe for people who have had interocular lens surgery?
It’s a shame you did not get a reply from Margaret. That is a concern for me too
Interesting.
would this be ok with someone with recurrent stress fractures in feet?
Where can this be purchased?
Please contact Marodyne in your country. Thank you.
This is the Hz and Amplitude of the vibration plate I use. Is it considered "low" or "high" vibration?
4hz-40hz & Oscillation 1-12mm Pulsation 1.5mm Linear 8mm
High
Which one do you use?
Can you use LIVT recovering from a femur fracture ?
I encourage you to read the article on my site where we discuss the results of LIV in detail. Thank you. melioguide.com/osteoporosis-exercise-equipment/whole-body-vibration-therapy/
Hi, witch vibration platform is better ? Hi intensity or low intensity. I have a hi intensity one.
Low intensity vibration is safer….high intensity vibration can cause injury!….😌
So this machine vibratrim 202+1 is not low intensity enough right? It’s higher than 1G
Maximum power: 1.5 HP
Input voltage: 110 Volt 60Hz
Input power: 200W
Speed setting: 20
Amplitude of oscillation: 0-10mm.
How do I know if my light switch turned up or not? Do I feel it?
Please contact Marodyne support with this question.
Why not listen to him?
In the section where the two of you are discussion why older bodies respond differently to exercise than younger ones, he mentions osteoclasts, which trigger the breakdown of bone. I'm wondering what the function of osteoclasts are, as I assume they have some function that has benefits. Am I wrong about this?
They work in concert with osteoblasts in the maintenance of bone. I encourage you to read this article. melioguide.com/osteoporosis-prevention/bone-quality-osteoporosis/

Go to the little symbol for settings and turn the speed up. 1.25 is a good start.
According to Clinton Rubin, the Mesenchymal stem cells in the bone marrow can grow to tendon cells, bone cells or whatever cells the body is in need of. If this is the case, I wonder if Marodyne LIV can heal knee inflammation and knee osteoarthritis.
