Farrah Walker lol thank you. I think this was my very first video I had ever done. So I was nervous and didn’t know what I needed to talk about. Plus it was just easier to show than to talk about it. ☺️ glad you enjoyed it!!
That is very cool. Beautiful wood grain. Have been watching videos of painting nylon synthetic gunstocks. Your paint technique is very simple and realistic.
This is literally the first cup I’ve seen that would suit a mans taste. Thank you so much for sharing. I think I know what my NEXT craft projects will be. 👍🏼
Beautiful Amber, enjoyed watching this tutorial, it just amazes me how everyone has a unique talent and that you do. Thank you for sharing your talents with us... looking for ward to watching more of your videos
Cheryl McCuistion thank you so much! I love to see how everyone goes about doing it their own way. 😊 I will be posting more videos soon! Happy crafting!!
I HAVE TO LAUGH BECAUSE YOUR CAT IS IN ALL YOUR VIDEOS. I HAVE THE SAME ISSUES TRYING TO WORK. I LOVE YOUR TUTORIAL VIDEOS... JUST STARTING OUT MYSELF..
Gee, just use a bottle of shoe polish. It's way faster and you get a great effect. Sand it first. For darker woods put a coat of black (let it dry) then more coats of brown. ;^)
Desiree Erickson I have never tried on the already painted cups. I would still spray with a matte spray, the ink sticks to the paint better. I feel that the ink on the other paint would run and not dry right. But give it a try and if it doesn’t work you can always start over. ☺️ Hope it works out for you! Happy crafting!!
Haven't read through the comments, my question is if you have a white cup do you still need to spray paint it white? Are better yet for this method should you spray paint all cups white as a primer first when creating? Thanks
Barbara Oliver it the cup is already white then you may not have to spray paint them again. But some cups come with a silky finish and the inks do not stick to the cup. If you do a matte spray paint the inks do better, so I would spray mine over the already white cup. Hope that helps
Thanks so much for your tutorial. I made my first cup and followed your colour etc to a T ... but when I put epoxy on top of the inks it turned olive green and no longer looks brown? Any suggestions why this happened?
No I didnt but then found out I should have, so have re done another one with a spray. The cup did turn back to better brown after hours of drying. Thanks for the advice :)
love this, can what is the name of the brand and color for the wood effect and the name of the sealer you use before epoxy please and thank you =) ive never done this gonna try it. what store as well lol
Felicia Whitney I say the colors for the inks I use in the video. I got them at Michaels craft store. The sealer you can get at Lowe’s or Walmart. Any clear spray paint sealer works.
I love the video! Thanks for sharing! I hope you can help with my question- what is a good alternative for epoxy? I've researched in my country and none offers an epoxy that is safe to use for tumblers, odorless, and heat resistant. I can't start with my project without a coating to use, or can I proceed without it? Appreciate your help.
Taylor Blaire Causey you can put the inks right on the cup or add alcohol. It just depends on what look you are wanting. I would rub a little alcohol on the brush and then add the ink to the cup. When you brush the ink it moves it a lot better.
Hello! Thank you for creating this video. Very helpful to a tumbler rookie. Question...can you skip the white spray paint step and buy a white tumbler? Or is it best to have the spray paint base for the alcohol ink to adhere?
Erika Synnestvedt I find that the spray paint helps the ink betters. The cups that are already painted white have a silky coat and the ink doesn’t stick well to it.
Hey! I am sure this is all in the comments but you have a lot! Lol so just a quick go over after you do the wood grain look. You seal it. How long do you normally wait before you seal it? then put a coat of epoxy on then if your wanting a decal and then epoxy one last time? Thank you. This looks so easy or I should say you make it look easy. I enjoy this video!!!
Lita Sterling hey! So I wait about 30 mins after I seal the ink. Just to make sure it is sealed and dry. And then epoxy, decal, epoxy and done. Of course depending on how thick you epoxy you may have to add more or less coats. Hope that helps
When making your glitter tumblers or mugs in this case with Mod Podge and epoxy, about how long does the entire process take from start to finish in real time before you package them up and ship them off? I keep hearing different answers and I just want to be sure that I’ve let my Mod Podge and epoxy cure long enough so that it doesn’t crack or run or anything like that.
Maya West it really all depends on what design you are doing with glitter or mod podge. If it’s just one glitter it may take about two hours to do two layers of glitter and mod podge. Then you epoxy which can take up to 6-12 hours to dry. All in all I would say a day for it to be dry, but 3 days for the epoxy to fully cure.
How long did you let it dry before you put the epoxy on? Do you use a clear spray paint in between the alcohol ink and epoxy? I tried this today and my epoxy bubbled and ruined the alcohol ink. Maybe I didn’t let it dry long enough
Smash DePlanty I let the ink dry for a good 15mins. Then spray with a clear spray. Let that set for about 30min to an hour. That should be good enough time, then add epoxy. If the epoxy is bubbling then you don’t have it at the right temp. Make sure it’s about 72° or so in the room. That helps.
Amber this is so so sooooooo cool, I’m actually doing this on my next video. Thank you sooooo much for the inspiration, is it ok to link this video in my description box, so I can show all my subscribers where I got the idea, Ps. I just subscribed to your channel & I can’t wait to watching more of your videos
Ann Millwood I have not tried it that way. I’m not sure how the ink would do since the white tumblers have a clear smooth coat on them already. The ink may not stick to the cup.
Hi can u mod podge a material piece over the paint like wood that u did and if u can do I mod podge the material first before I cut out the design so the thread don’t show or come out since I saw that when u mod podge material it keeps it intact
Amber Johnson I would like to do the wood look tumbler but put a little piece of material cutout on it over the wood not the whole cup just a small design
alohagirl70 oh ok! Then I would cut the shape or design out first. Once you have sealed your ink on your cup then you can mod podge the image onto the cup.
Just wanted to say your knots are probably the best that I have seen so far! I’m getting ready to do my first wood grain tumbler and what do you think about using a plastic straw to blow thru to make a knot? I would think you can make the knot longer or round just by pushing the ink with air. I would also think that the edges won’t be smooth,it would look like a knot. Thanks for your video
jarka1361 well thank you so much! I have seen many use a straw. I don’t like using a straw, I feel like I can control what I do with the brush. Give it a try and see how it works for you!! Happy crafting!!
Shonda Johnson no I do not dip my brush in alcohol before I paint. I spray my cup white, then just drip alcohol ink and brush! After I am done with the look I’m going for I spray the ink with a clear sealer. Then I epoxy the cup and it’s done. Happy crafting!
Amber Johnson thank you so much. The cup is beautiful and I can not wait to start mine. What temp should it be when spraying the up white. I will have to do this outdoors
Shonda Johnson I have spray painted a cup in 25 degree weather 😆!! Just be careful to make sure it doesn’t run. If you spray too much in one spot it will run down and have to start over.
Chauna Casteel you can sand the cup for more grip on the paint. All items can be found on amazon, or you can find them at any craft store like hobby lobby or Michaels.
I have the Rustoleum clear coat spray. I waited maybe 10-15 mins before spraying it. If you get to close to the ink with the clear coat, it will change the color of the ink.
Thanks for the tutorial. I have a couple of questions. Could you do this over powder coated tumblers or does it have to be spray painted from a can. Second question is could you use the clear coating from powder coating instead of epoxy? Lol as you can tell currently all I am doing to color my tumblers is powder coating them. Thank you in advance for any help you can give me.
Jim Phalen oh these are great questions! Ok first one... I haven’t tried the powder coating my tumblers. So I’m not sure how that would work. I have seen that acrylic paint works just as good as the spray paint. So my thinking is that powder coating should work too! It’s always a trial and error type of thing 😆 Second question... I have only used epoxy to seal my cups. I know some that use the triple thick instead. You could try that and see if that works for you. Again I would take a day or two and play with these ideas and see what works and what doesn’t. I hope that helps a little! Happy crafting.
Mercedes Smith if you have not epoxied the cup yet, the 90% alcohol will remove the ink. If you have epoxied the cup then yes acetone will remove the ink and epoxy from the cup.
Mike Glass hi there! I sprayed painted the cup with a white stain color first. Then added the alcohol inks and then spray the inks with a clear sealer spray. Happy crafting.
Amber Johnson I waited a day to spray my purple ink cup with a clear coat and now I see spots that look pink. Has any of your ever changed colors after the coat?
I have had a few of my wood grain cups change color, but once it dried for a couple hours it went back to the normal color. Also I had one change color and once I epoxy it, it went back to its normal color.
Hello! your video it´s awesome... I tried to do it and everything was perfect until I applied the crystal clear, the paint began to wrinkle and get up ... it was ruined.
Shekiart Designs hi there! I’m not sure what clear spray sealer you are using. It should not do that. Sorry that happen. You should not spray too close to the cup also. You should try the Rust-Oleum clear spray sealer. That is what I used on this cup.
Randi Nicely that has happen to me also. Not sure why it does that. I waited a while before I epoxied mine, and it went back to the brown color. It might be that you (and me) sprayed too much of the clear spray. It’s hard to say. I know some say they never seal the alcohol paints before epoxy. I have not tried that either. It’s always a trial and error type thing. Sorry I wasn’t much help.
when you say " I waited a while before I epoxied mine, and it went back to the brown color" do you mean that it returned to the brown color before you epoxied it or that it went back to a brown color after you epoxied it. Ive waited about 5 hours and mine is still green so I'm wondering how long to wait before I epoxy it
Amanda Shoubaki sometimes it’s the spray that turns it green and sometimes it’s the ink. It’s just one of those things you just don’t know which it is. Mine turned back brown before I epoxied it.
Chassity Hudgins I don’t trust just the spray paint. Maybe use triple thick if you don’t want to use epoxy. I like the epoxy because the seal is thick.
Amber Johnson I epoxy. I meant the initial white paint. I want to start it tonight so I wanted to see what your opinion would be on acrylic paint instead of spray paint. Sorry if I wasn't clear! I apologize
Chassity Hudgins oh I’m so sorry, I misunderstood. I have tried acrylic paint on another cup and I could not get the paint to dry without streaks in it. If you can get the paint to stay without brush marks than yes you can do it that way. Let me know if that works for you.
Amber Johnson Trying it tonight, MAYBE tomorrow if I can find some patience! Haha! I used a gorgeous cobalt blue paint the other day & it worked beautifully but I am new to ink dyes so I didn't know
Andrea Pitre no stainless steal cup is dishwasher safe. No matter if you epoxy them or not. The dishwasher will break the seal. If you do epoxy the cup it is definitely NOT dishwasher safe. Hand wash only!!
LiveLaugh MakeLove I seal the ink with a clear coat spray. I don’t think plastic bottles are good to epoxy. I have never tried. Also yes the more alcohol you use the less the color of ink.
Thank you so much.. my husband been wanting me to make him one … loved it …

@@cindywashington6200 Yes, the liquid kind. Try brown. If you want dark brown try one coat of black (tip it off) then the rest in brown.
I love your shirt! Put that on a cup!
Rayne Chantel yes it needs to be on a cup for sure! It’s one of my favorite shirts! ☺️
Do you seal it before you epoxy your wood grain
Leonor Vasquez yes I seal it with a clear coat of spray paint
thanks for sharing, have you tried using other paints? did alcohol come out the best?
No I have never used paints. I have only used the alcohol inks.
@@southernwondernc I was thinking of trying wood stain since I have it around the house already. will see how it goes.
@@patrickrenschler let me know how that does!!
@@southernwondernc just did some tests - the color is too thinned out, gonna have to get some alcohol ink!

I see more people making cup with sublimation printing. That may be something you could do. It’s just paper, ink and an oven!

Melissa Rodd it all matters on the materials you use, the size of the cup and your time. I would check around and see what others are pricing them as.

Ann Millwood I have not tried it that way. I’m not sure how the ink would do since the white tumblers have a clear smooth coat on them already. The ink may not stick to the cup.

stardomind yes I spray a clear coat over the ink. You can find it at either Walmart or Lowe’s hardware.

I have the Rustoleum clear coat spray. I waited maybe 10-15 mins before spraying it. If you get to close to the ink with the clear coat, it will change the color of the ink.

I guess I should of asked what brand of stain did you color first. acrylic or enamel? THanks. :)
It’s enamel white spray paint from rust-oleum.
flat or semi flat. Thank you, I love this.
Mike Glass I use semi-flat mostly. I feel that it spreads the inks better. You can use flat also. I think that’s what most people use.

stardomind as soon as the white paint is dry to the touch you can start painting on it.

Haha! I used a gorgeous cobalt blue paint the other day & it worked beautifully but I am new to ink dyes so I didn't know
Chassity Hudgins oh I bet it’s so pretty! Hope everything turns out great for you! Happy crafting!!
After you do the epoxy step, will it be dishwasher safe?
Andrea Pitre no stainless steal cup is dishwasher safe. No matter if you epoxy them or not. The dishwasher will break the seal. If you do epoxy the cup it is definitely NOT dishwasher safe. Hand wash only!!
Where i can find that paint and whats of it
How much are your cups
I don’t make them anymore sorry.
Will it work good in pvc pipe?
So u only have to do one coat of the wood grain/seal it and then epoxy
Joseph Corvers yep! ☺️
@@southernwonderncCan you buy plastic bottles and mix the alcohol ink you bought with more alcohol to give a lighter and thinner look?
LiveLaugh MakeLove I seal the ink with a clear coat spray. I don’t think plastic bottles are good to epoxy. I have never tried. Also yes the more alcohol you use the less the color of ink.
You said this is “alcohol paint”?
patriotsriot yes you can get them at any craft store or online
You need to fix that knot
My husband uses these plans from Woodprix and is very happy with them. However. I love yours!
My husband used these plans from Stodoys and he is very pleased.
Do you seal your cup before you epoxy it ?
Yes I seal with a clear spray.
