my mom died of breast cancer almost 2 months ago. She never really told me about the mammogram experience, so thank you for this video. You helped a daughter who doesn’t have a mom to teach her these things anymore 💕
I think this is the best video i have ever seen. This is fantastic. Your humor and relatability absolutely shines. Beautiful. I also love how you advocated for yourself. This would be a great PSA for women.
My mother and grandmother both died from breast cancer, so I've been getting mammograms since I was 35. I'm almost 50 now and no signs of cancer. I know they are uncomfortable, but they are vital and necessary. Thank you, Mayim, for being so honest about your fears and anxieties. It's a scary thing, being confronted with the possibility of cancer.
I just had my first mammogram today. 🎉Wish I had seen this before I went. Would have saved a lot of anxiety. This is something women just do not discuss enough and thank you for sharing your experience because it really is strange but in the end it was very easy to do. ❤️
Mazel tov! I too, have dense breast tissue, and both fibroid and fluid-filled cysts. Had to have a mammogram and sonogram every 6 months for the past couple of years. Two months ago I was finally was cleared to have the one annual exam. Yay! The things women have to endure!
Greetings! Breast cancer survivor here! One thing I had a mammo tech tell me was that sometimes it helps to slightly bend your knees. It can alleviate some of that pulling sensation you may experience in the upper chest. It worked for me! Also, I'm here to let everyone know, breast cancer is super scary, but it's not always a death sentence. I had a lumpectomy, 20 sessions of radiation, and now I take a hormone blocker. I have a less than 10% recurrence probability. GO GET YOUR PILLOWS PANINI'D!
So I'm only 27 and I've had to have one of these already because cancer runs so much in my family and I had a lump they were concerned about... It is a crazy weird feeling and you are awesome for talking about it because I was terrified beforehand and something like this might have helped me to feel less scared.
Just wanted to hop on here to say this is from 4 years ago now, but is still so relevant and I appreciate this video even though I've already gone through this now twice in my 45 years of life. I too share in the dense breast club! Woo hoo! All of your descriptions are 100% spot on. I will never be able to look at another organization container without busting up now...thanks. Cheers to healthy ta ta's!!!!
I am so grateful for this video and your vulnerability and honesty. I'm 26 and mammograms are on my brain because of past history of breast cancer in my family and in friends around me. Thank you for making me a little less fearful for my future.
I had a breast reduction when I was 31 and had to start getting mammograms at 35. I'm 46 now so I've had quite a few. cute story Mayim! Welcome to the mammogram club! I was supposed to go at 40 but waited until I was 43 and after my Primary Care Dr. hounded me.. I was so scared and yes it was not very comfortable but went smoothly! WAY TO GO LADY!
Great video 💖 I admire you so much! You never shy away from the tough videos but you make them fun to watch and experience with you. Thank you for that 💖
@J. C. Obviously. In Ireland though, it doesn't matter what's in your bank account the day of your appointment. I'm sure that fact alone has saved lives...
Are there 350 million+ people in Ireland? That’s something that people in other countries need to think about. The US is also the military for a lot of countries, so they save money that way as well. Healthcare isn’t free because someone is paying for it somewhere.

A woman of many talents and an inspiration to girls trying to get along in the academic world and honestly just girls trying to get along in this world.
Thanks for sharing this! It’s an important message. I had my first and only mammogram 9 years ago. A double mastectomy later, I’m so thankful I went. So happy your test results were good.
Thanks so much for posting this video, it's a service to all women and I'm so glad you did it for yourself. Now you know it's not sooo bad and you'll get it done every year from here on in. I'm getting my MD referral next month for my annual. :-)
Speaking as a fellow dense breasted individual, the technique has improved over the years. It used to be an ice cold opaque substance (think garage door closing on concrete floor in winter) they used to squeeze your melons flat as a pancake. Now it's ice cold acrylic. Hats off to progress!
Routine... But dang, it hurts to have them smashed for those few moments. Also, I'm short... Could I please have a box to stand on. I feel like this machine is hanging me up by the breast.
One of your best videos! Thank you. I've been putting this off for years now, but my best friend convinced me that I need to do it. So your video came at the right time. I'm going to call tomorrow and make the appointment!!
Thank you so much for this video. I just had MY first mammogram, and seeing your video last week helped put me at ease. I have white coat syndrome, so anything to do with medical care triggers me. I felt so much better, and that, coupled with having a wonderful technician who laughed with me about wrangling boobs, made the experience bearable. So grateful! 🙏🏼❤️
Thank you so much for being so open! Your description of the process was spot on. I had my first mammogram at 22 when my dr. found a lump at my annual checkup. I was still breastfeeding my 1yo so when the arm on the machine smooshed my breast, breastmilk literally shot across the room. 😒 Luckily it was just a blocked milk duct and not anything serious. Hopefully you get great news.
I'm so glad you did this. It's uncomfortable af, but It's just a few minutes of your life and so important to do. You're right that no one should have to go without basic preventative care.
Holy cow!!! I literally just got home from my mammogram today too! I agree, it was fast and awkward, but for me, IT HURT!!! I'm in Canada, so like most developed countries, it's paid for by our government, which I am deeply grateful for...even if it does hurt.
Thanks Maree! I'm relieved to hear that, but now I'm also confused. The impression I got based on the very last part of this video is that it's not free. @mayimbialik mentions that she had to pay for it and will be submitting it to her health insurance provider and she is in her 40s, and has breast cancer in her family history.
Gen Smiley I’m not sure why a millionaire and yes she is one google how much she makes per episode of her TV show and the others she has done. Why wouldn’t she have private health insurance I don’t know. Maybe her doctor didn’t think she needed one, IDK. I’m just tired of rich people Hollywood stars and the media who aren’t middle class telling people from different countries we don’t or never had free insurance for the poor and elderly we do and we did before Obama Care. . Most large company’s offer insurance but some people don’t feel it’s necessary to have until they get sick and really see they need it. Yes some families with one income can’t afford it but they can cash pay and it’s affordable. “My woman’s center” only charges $100.00 for the mammogram and exam and blood test. A little pricey but not bad. But we have free clinics that do your one year exam for a small fee, it goes by your income. Don’t believe everything you hear from these people. It’s all about money. She gets paid to do these UTube video’s. Plus lots of free stuff from companies.
I don't see anything wrong with people get money and free stuff for their YT channel. Especially if it's reaching a lot of people and helping them in some way. Regardless of how much or how little money you make elsewhere, maintaining a RUclips channel is a lot of work. So just like any other job, I think you should get compensation for your work.
Gen Smiley That’s not really what I’m saying I’m talking about insurance. Nothing to do with her channel. Just that insurance is free to low income people in the U.S. always has been it covers everything, Including her mammogram why she said she would submitting it to her insurance company makes zero sense. She’s rich, she can afford to pay for it out of her pocket. Plus the cash price for a mammogram is cheap. She must be taking about people in third world countries who can’t afford to get on.
Such an important video thank you for making this Mayim! Who knows, someone who doesn't want to get a mammogram can see this video and decide that it's better safe than sorry!
I started doing the mammogram at 31 years old when my dad died from cancer. I stopped doing it for 5 years because everyone said that I was too young and I probably should wait till 40. Now I'm 36, currently in chemo, waiting for my surgery. Seriously don't skip this exam, it's very important
So true! They treat them like dough. I'm 31 years old with a long history of breast cancer in my family, so I've already had like 3 mammograms done and they're not fun. But this is so important to help catch and treat cancer and more women should have access to this test. I'm lucky because in Chile, even though it's not the best health care system, we do have access to free mammograms if we can't afford them and that's very helpful. Thank you for doing this, awareness is key
Hi Mayim, thanks for sharing. Lots of women are afraid to have a mammogram. I live in the United Kingdom. We have a wonderful heath care. Here in the UK, our health taken care of through our taxation systems. I feel really sorry for people who don't have the means to afford propped health care.
Thank you SO much Mayim!💯 I've got my first mammogram in three days and am very nervous😬 You really helped calm some of my anxiety🙌 You're an amazing, wonderful human being and I very much appreciate your openness and honesty. Please never change, we love ya!🌻🌺🌷💜
Wow you are the best! Thank you for sharing. I am only 32 but my mom had a recent breast cancer that has been successfully treated with just radiation. At the end when you talk of people who don’t have insurance, I think about all the women who don’t have insurance and who do not get it addressed, who eventually have a rotting breast that falls off. They eventually end up in the hospital dying of cancer that has spread to all of their parts… Which costs a lot more than what it would have cost if somehow she could’ve gotten some kind of care before it turned into this metastasized horror. I’m so grateful my mom had everything done when she did before things get worse in healthcare. Thank you again for sharing!
I love your descriptions....and your cats! Thank you for sharing a part of you with us. :-) BTW, your house looks so cozy and comfy. Not something I'd expect from an Emmy Award winning actor---chrome and clean lines. I love that you're so down-to-earth.
They save lives. If you do have Cancer they can hopefully catch it earlier. So ladies take the advice of an old lady. Get your mammograms done and be grateful when they come back negative!! My Mom has breast Cancer twice. She lived to be 97 years old! Proud that you made this video. It does not take much time but you will feel really good about yourself for doing it. Love Nancy
Because my mom had breast cancer, my mammograms started when I was 34 and now at 38 I've had at least 7 of them thanks to things showing up as "questionable" that all turned out to be fine. I'm planning a preventative double mastectomy when I turn 40. Ladies, it's nerve wracking, but mammograms are not nearly as dramatic or painful as you think. Go get one. Get one.
Hi Mayim. I live in the uk were we have free medical care. We start getting Mammogram’a from the age of 50 as routine and then every two/three years. It’s scary the first time. And we have smear tests every five years. I’m 53 my mums hod breast cancer twice fully recovered she’s 80 in November. I try and remind people they they should go for these test as they do save lives Thank you for sharing your first time experience.
I've had several mammograms since before I was 40 since breast cancer runs in my mom's family. You were great at describing the experience. I just had one last week. It does feel like the tech is handling risen dough. LOL! I don't look forward to them, but I do it and think about my Aunt Christine who passed away almost 9 years ago from a rare and deadly form of breast cancer called inflammatory breast cancer.
I really resonate with what you said about it being awkward and scary, but still being thankful to have access to such an important screening. Many places around the world do not have such screening and early detection is rare. My first mammogram, like so many first timers also went to ultrasound and showed masses requiring follow up screening. That can be such a shock, but it is really common when young to have dense breast tissue and harmless masses essentially of fat which need checking out, but turn out to be nothing. I am so glad for the journey because now know the kinds of things that go through people's minds when they are waiting and how to pray for them. You are all woman, lovely Mayim! Thanks for taking us on your journey.
Mayim, sweetie, maybe just say "I'm a mom" when they ask "what do you do" because that preserves some privacy, it doesn't potentially lead to questions about Big Bang Theory, and it's true. You are a mom. And it IS work. :) The rest isn't their business unless you choose to make it so.
Mayim I just love you. Thank you for making this video (and your Brake Down show). I'm going in today for my first screening and your words are giving me courage.
Im glad everything was ok for you. Ive got to go for a cat scan for my upper chest to check my heart. So on the day i will watch your video again and may be do my own just to keep my mind busy. Lots of love Shalom xx
I'm so glad you made this video, at 44 I had my first mammogram and was diagnosed with breast cancer, had a skin sparing mastectomy with diep .. 10 hours in theatre, best treatment and surgery I have ever seen, no one would ever know unless I told them, and because I live in the UK it was all free because I pay national insurance based on my income. I am now on oral meds for 5 years and all my medication is free too. I feel for those in countries who either don't have the standard of treatment we have or the money to pay for it.
Once you have your first mammogram your fine. Breast cancer runs in my family. I was diagnosed at 35 years of age. A mammogram saved my life. After radiation and part removal of your breast nothing phases you. Thank you for getting the message out. 🙏
I would love to know your thoughts on Dr. McDougall's thoughts on routine mammograms. Specifically routine ones, not ones where there is a legitimate likelihood that you might get breast cancer because of family history. Here in the UK they actually send out literature about the pros and cons when they invite women for their first mammogram when they hit 50. So that women can make an informed decision on if it's a risk they want to take. I understand that isn't always the case now that I've seen his lecture on routine mammograms.
They don't start until 50 in the UK? Interesting... They start at 40 here in the US. I suppose it's helpful to start earlier just in case, but it's probably just because of profit here unfortunately😒
@@oliviagreen7423 I fear you may be correct. Dr. McDougall's analysis of the statistics in the U.S versus the rest of the world would indeed back up your theory. 🙈 have you watched What The Health on Netflix? There's one particular exchange between the film makers and hospital staff that is *staggering*. A confession if ever I heard one.
I will have to watch that, thank you for the recommendation. Kind of dreading finding out more about our healthcare system, it's so broken and awful😕 but ignorance is definitely not bliss, it's necessary to know
Thank you so much for sharing things like this Miss Mayim. It's important for us all to remember that most people have found themselves in the position of thinking, "If I don't get this checked it's not real" or similar. It's much better to know, and to act if necessary, than to not know, and pay the consequences. Avoidance of anything (health-related or not) also causes more stress and anxiety, not less. The "what if's" can be brutal to carry around with you every day.
@@phoebebuffet9541 It was agonizing because of the way they have to angle you in there and, like Miss Mayim, I also have dense breast tissue. I hurt for like 2 weeks afterwards, not breast pain necessarily but pain around the breasts like ribs and around armpits, etc. I felt like I got hit by a car!
My mistake, it is every one to two years, here is the info directly from the Healthcare.gov site: Breast cancer mammography screenings every 1 to 2 years for women over 40
Hello, my name is Eleonora and I am 50 years old, when my mom was 47 she was diagnosed with breast cancer and today she is 70, when my sister was 41 she was diagnosed with mana cancer and today she is 45 ... I get mammograms every years since I was 35 years old ... women do not stop doing it every year!!!💪💪💪💪
Thank you so much for this video!! I will be having one tomorrow, my first time. I am a cancer survivor but have not had to have a mammogram until now. I will probably giggle at least a few times thinking of this video tomorrow!!
@@jmsl_910 It went well, a little squishy but not painful. I was sent to the ultrasound room afterwards for possible tiny cysts, but they couldn't find anything. I'll have a follow up scan in 6 months.
Ultrasound is an imaging test that sends high-frequency sound waves through the breast and converts them into images on a viewing screen. There is no radiation involved. ... Ultrasounds are sometimes recommended for women with dense breasts because it can be harder for mammograms to detect cancer in dense breasts.
I’m so very grateful mammograms are routinely given for free where I live. My mum had breast cancer that was picked up very early via a mammogram which meant it was treated in the really early.
Thanks so much for this video Mayim, I haven't had to have a mammogram yet, but I will have to soon and I'm dreading it. When that day comes, I'm certain that my dog will urge me to cancel the appointment too. Pets just know things. Mammograms are so important; my Mom's diligence in getting annual mammograms may have saved her life. They found a lump and it was cancerous but because they caught it so early, she only needed a lumpectomy, not a mastectomy and she endured a shortened round of radiation but didn't have to do chemotherapy. Most importantly, her cancer never had the chance to spread to other parts of her body. Added bonus: she never lost her hair! She has been cancer free for years now (YAY!) and continues to go to her annual boob-squishing appointment.
This video made me unexpectedly very emotional. First I would like to say I’m proud of you for not putting this off as so many women do because it is emotionally and physically terrifying. Second THANK YOU for sharing your journey to show many women that it’s not just pain followed by bad news. Third congratulations for surviving your first mammogram!! 💕
First, more videos with your cat's please. Particularly enjoyed the background cat at 1:52 Second, I would have never posted a vid like this on the internet but I'm glad you did because it was interesting to hear about
I’m terrified every year when I have my mammogram and MRI (high risk). It’s not a club that I want a membership too but I’m very grateful that I have access to these services. Thank you for sharing the process and your emotions.
Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us! You reaction as far as all awkwardness and anxiety and feeling very exposed is how I felt about my first well woman exam. I had a female Dr the first time and it was wayyy worse. I go to a male Dr now. He's much nicer and gentler.
So proud of you. As a short round woman I can honestly say for me it feels like in swinging from the machine by my breast. They gave me short stool to stand on the first time. I have had 3 scans at different points in the last 10 years. Every time I get a tiny bruise close to my armpit. I wish this was considered essential heath care. In Ontario if you have it done before 50 it is not covered under our healthcare. After 50 once every other year is covered.
Carol Kane Hospitals are kept at that temp because it helps hard surfaces to stay at a temperature low enough to help slow or inhibit bacterial growth. It’s super uncomfortable but it’s a step in trying to limit nosocomial ( hospital acquired ) infections. The only wards in a hospital that are not kept chilly are burn wards.
Mayim, I know that you make your videos light and filled with humor for the sake of entertainment and also making things a little bit easier to handle, but I can't tell you how much I appreciate your efforts. My first mammogram is impending. It has been a terrifying idea for me. I certainly don't even like having someone hug me, let alone handle my breasts like dough. That being said, I appreciate how informative your video was. Thank you for your candid vulnerability. It is much appreciated.
my mom died of breast cancer almost 2 months ago. She never really told me about the mammogram experience, so thank you for this video. You helped a daughter who doesn’t have a mom to teach her these things anymore 💕

So incredibly sorry. I lost my mama some years ago as well so I feel your sorrow. Much love to u.

Glad you stuck up for what you needed. I am now 63 so I do this every year. Pretty routine after a few times. Xo
Routine... But dang, it hurts to have them smashed for those few moments. Also, I'm short... Could I please have a box to stand on. I feel like this machine is hanging me up by the breast.
You are adorable and I freaking love how humble you are. So proud of you! 👏🏼
"Braless with my pom pom earrings"....too funny! 😂
Wish I was there.
One of your best videos! Thank you. I've been putting this off for years now, but my best friend convinced me that I need to do it.
So your video came at the right time. I'm going to call tomorrow and make the appointment!!
Very clear and concise video, while making it a little funny and not at all boring! Keep it going, Mayim!
Breast cancer warrior over here 💪 I got my diagnosis at 32, so start early ladies 😊💕
I'm making an appt at 38. Thank you
I agree get early. I was diagnoised at 38. Keep spreading the word.
27 over and a fellow battler... just that its testicular cancer with me. Stay strong and pull through.
Im 21 with a painful lump & my doctor said I should get one
Your compassion is immense and admirable!
Glad you're well Mayim. You're right; all women should get them.
Much love to you.
Addressing a significant issue w candor and some humor. Love these " real life" vlogs!
Gen Smiley All mammograms are free in the U.S. at age 40 to 45,sooner if it runs in your family.
I feel really sorry for people who don't have the means to afford propped health care.
dawn j so how do you know to which hospital you should go? I mean can you just go randomly to any hospital requesting for a service? For real?
It must have been a relief to know your screening was clear! Also I’m happy mammograms are free in Canada 🇨🇦
Newfiegal 78 nor really free, our taxes pay for it.🇨🇦👍
Welcome to the Club Mayim. it is a valuable test. I was diagnosed Jan 2016. It's not fun. Take it Easy.
Please do your research on mammograms. they are a SCAM and here is why

Thank you for sharing with great description. It is nice to feel I am not alone with all these emotions.
A mammogram is like bear-hugging a Xerox machine naked ....
wait,
is their a photocopy?
ohhhh😳😳😳
im out.
Tammy Tenison best description EVER!!!! FTW!!
@@egoy34 oh yes. You get a lovely souvenir black and white suitable for framing LOL
Tammy Tenison Yes, but with even more squishing! 😂
This may be the clearest most concise and easily u ceratopsian explanation ever! It’s shorter than my compliment!
Just came to say your cats are adorable!!! ❤ Also, good on you for getting your regular screenings!!
BTW, your house looks so cozy and comfy.
Go get one. Get one.
The only reason you get a Mastectomy is because you have DCIS cells that need removing. Talk to your doctor first.
Hi Mayim. I live in the uk were we have free medical care. We start getting Mammogram’a from the age of 50 as routine and then every two/three years. It’s scary the first time. And we have smear tests every five years.
I’m 53 my mums hod breast cancer twice fully recovered she’s 80 in November. I try and remind people they they should go for these test as they do save lives
Thank you for sharing your first time experience.
The rest isn't their business unless you choose to make it so.
Mayim I just love you. Thank you for making this video (and your Brake Down show). I'm going in today for my first screening and your words are giving me courage.
Congrats Glad all is well. Thank You for all those years of the TBBT.
So glad we can all continue to see you. You should be nominated for best actress on the finale! I really mean it.
Move to Canada. We smoosh all sorts of things with the compliments of the Gov.
Mammentous! Good health and long life to you Mayim.
I love how you made a video diary about this. It was very entertaining and will surely be helpful to many people. Love you❤️
A yearly mammogram is free with any regular insurance plan. Doesn't make the pain any less, it's the absolute worst.
Tiny Pine Farm
i was waiting for her to describe the pain/feeling but didn’t.
how bad is the pain and for how long? thanks
@@phoebebuffet9541 not bad at all. Just a very brief squishing of the breasts. Totally fine.
I get mammograms every years since I was 35 years old ... women do not stop doing it every year!!!💪💪💪💪
Milk makers - I can’t 😂
Thank you so much for this video!! I will be having one tomorrow, my first time. I am a cancer survivor but have not had to have a mammogram until now. I will probably giggle at least a few times thinking of this video tomorrow!!
hope it went as easy as possible
I refer to them as squishograms.
Crushograms
Mammograms are super important mammogram caught my cancer in the early stages

Lisa Ciancanelli excellent
Lisa Ciancanelli mine too
Me too, had surgery this month! Congrats!
Did you have any sort of symptoms or signs beforehand?
Thank you so much for this, I am also getting my first mammogram, an this eased my nerves.
Particularly enjoyed the background cat at 1:52
Second, I would have never posted a vid like this on the internet but I'm glad you did because it was interesting to hear about
I had my first mammogram a couple days ago and I found your video SO helpful to watch beforehand. It wasn't bad at all!
35, had my first last year and a biopsy. Both were worse in my mind. Neither hurt.
I’m terrified every year when I have my mammogram and MRI (high risk). It’s not a club that I want a membership too but I’m very grateful that I have access to these services. Thank you for sharing the process and your emotions.
That was HILARIOUS...thanks for sharing...and WELCOME TO THE CLUB LOL! :)
Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us! You reaction as far as all awkwardness and anxiety and feeling very exposed is how I felt about my first well woman exam. I had a female Dr the first time and it was wayyy worse. I go to a male Dr now. He's much nicer and gentler.
Hey mayim. Miss you and the other tbbt cast members as well
So proud of you.
Had my first one at 35 and at 65 I still wonder why it has to be so cold. 😬😬😬
