One way to make Honda carbs easier to work on is to use six mm threaded rods to slide all those gaskets back together. Cut a screwdriver slot in the end of the rods. Now with it assembled, pull one rod and replace bolt and then the other one.. Easy peasy, or at least bearable. My found mower even had a flag style limiter on the idle circuit that I had to grind off to remove the screw to clean the idle circuit. So at least with the threaded rods you don't have the airbox on there to adjust the carb screws. I am pretty sure that they use threaded rods that might work on predator horizontal engines that are possibly the right diameter and hopefully length. On edit , carb mounting studs are 6 mm threads 4.5 inches long for the 6.5 horsepower and if you need longer ones, they are 133 mm long for the 11 and 13 horsepower horizontal engines. These are readily available aftermarket parts
I have a HRX217 we use in my commercial company and love it. I agree about taking the carb on and off its a pain. The HRX217HXA was around 800.00 new. The material the deck is called Nexite its the same material used to make football helmets. Honda now gives a lifetime warranty on the deck for residential use only 90 days for commercial use. They are great mowers!!
Thanks for the info. I did not know that they made football helmets out of the same material. If I got a scrap one I will make a video on trying to break the deck.
@@doublewide6 run it over with a truck. See how much force it takes to break it
What a way to Bring it back to life! Always learning something knew over here, the fuel shut off hack was awesome you have the ultimate blade sharpener. Another one saved!💯💪🏽
Thanks Man! I built the blade sharpener myself. It is used everytime I am in the shop.
Have that for 12 years, without blade clutch been good for me.
deck is made of NeXite®. This high impact resistant material does not dent, rust, or corrode over time. So durable it comes with a lifetime warranty!
On these Carbs u can pull the spacers out of the air box base then slide them over the carb bolts. This allows you to bolt the carb back down without the air box on so you can adjust it while on the machine running.
I just bought a brand new HRX217HYA and it cost me over 900 bucks with tax. I wish I could have bought yours used. It’s my first Honda. Hope it lives up to the hype. I have a big yard, all hill.
Excellent work keeping these machines going. Love the channel
Thanks, will do!
Helpful video about lawn mower diagnosis and repair.
Nice job: I use a couple of chop stick cut off to align all the carb gaskets, plates, etc. works pretty good. Then pull one out and insert the bolt that belongs in it. Thanks.
Great tip! Thanks I may do the same if I can't find threaded bolts.
Same here , two short dowels.
@@doublewide6 make some studs out of bolts.
Just bought one of these for $930 cash lol
I just got one out of the trash down the street the other day. Someone had rigged the recoil starter back on the top and had too much tension on it causing it to seem like the motor was seized up. Loosened it up and the cord/motor came loose. Started right up. Ordered some parts to make it whole again and will probably use it as my main mower now 😂
Thanks, I learn a lot from your videos.
Bought mine brand new about 6 years ago (HRX217HYA) . Echo the carb comments, and the maintenance needed to keep the rear axle happy is a little un-called for, but for aging guys like me with a complicated lawn to mow, the hydrostatic trans is worth the nuisances. No other mower would be. Nice find!
I have seen a few hydo trans Hondas that lost the fluid and worked great as soon as the seals and fluid was replaced. The seals on the transmissions are not sold separately, so I had to measure and order something really close.
nice video as always. The chop stickes trick is a good tip. Last one i did i superglued all the pieces to each other. Worked but still a pain in the ass.
good tips.
Hondas are a pain I agree, what I do is this, the black part of the airfilter box that covers the carb itself, I very neatly just cut it off makes life so much easier, lining up the gaskets, and plates, and I also take the whole red cover off the top of the engine, to aid in cleaning, and inspect the ignition coil, and flywheel stop mechanism, also so the whole carb is exposed, and cutting off that part of the airfilter box doesn't effect the carb or running at all, and I have never had a complaint either only people who work on them would notice it anyway.
Very nice job.
If you do try the M6 X 1 bolt trick to hold everything together DO use the 100MM length and NOT the 80MM. Some on other videos have suggested the 80MM, which is the actual size of those two long bolts, and you don't get enough sticking out of the air filter box to make the trick work. I did not have to put any ends on the 100MM length bolts that i got... I could simply turn them out of the block with my fingers. Take one out while holding the air filter tight, then run the factory bolt in snug. That will hold everything in place while you put the other bolt in. I am trying to fix a throw away now and I got it running but it is surging. An amazon carb was about $10.00 and I may try that next. BEST OF LUCK and thanks for your video!!!
The easiest way to work on one of those carbs is to let someone else do it. I never had a plastic mower deck but did have an aluminum deck years ago. Unfortunately it cracked and was to expensive to get welded at that time. Thanks for saving a good mower so someone can purchase a nice one at less than new. Great job as usual.
Right on
A bit late now but yes the rope is to thick i found a HRX they had used a thick rope like that and i fixed it fast with a thinner rope . i have some dog walking rolls with thin rope . strong and thin, the lawnmower stills run great
Nice find Bob
I have the same mower, hrx217 hya. The pull rope assembly (housing and all is $15 on amazon. Other than that pull rope assembly, I've had zero problems. That model new goes for $900.
Nice work
Nice save on that not so old mower. Those HRX mowers with the blade clutch are/were crazy expensive. You should be able to get plenty more $$ for your time and trouble if you are willing to wait for the right buyer. For those carbs, I use a pair of M6 threaded rod, 100mm in length (just shy of 4 inches). I cut a slot on one end with a dremel and use a screwdriver to replace the bolts one at a time. Holds that mess of gaskets in order.
Thanks for the tips! I know what you mean then pull the rods out one at a time.
@@doublewide6 Yep. I think one of my recent honda vids show them in action. Honda sells the same "tool' for a crazy amount of money. Mercifully the newest consumer models have the studs now, like the commercial mowers have always had.
Great tip.
Nice job Bob. Those Honda carbs are kind of a pain to work on and they all seem to surge so i always drill that jet out regardless. I use two studs to reassemble the gaskets ,heat shield, plastic spacer, etc, and then i change out the studs one at a time with the bolts. Works pretty good for me. Here in Iowa i would get $185-$200 for that mower with a bagger and shined up. A trash find worked out well for you Bob! 👍💲🇺🇸 Roger
My bad Roger, I guess we were both typing our comments out at the same time. Good info though brother. 👍
@@Big_Johns No problem John. Did we have the same ideas? Thats a good thing . Always enjoy your comments. 👍
And likewise brother but yes had the same solution, I just shared LML’s video that helped me with the problem. 🙂👍🏼
Thanks Roger I am happy I asked for the solution because I am finding plenty of people on here that know about using dowels. I am going to list that mower for $200 and see what happens.
I was working on the exact same unit yesterday with the same surging. Which jet is the the low speed? There is no black plastic one up top like some honda clones. Thanks!
Trying again starting lawnmower
Thanks for the video... it was great
Glad you liked it!
No easy way to install and take off the carburetor on these Honda's , I've worked on so many of these . I saved one video too put it back together with all the gaskets in line . Because sometimes I wait so long too work on them I forget that everything has got too go back in a certain order . But LOL after taking them apart so many times you will save a how to video too use when it comes time too work on one . But I'm not afraid now too work on one , have an old Honda - its so old it has a manual choke carburetor on it . My personal Honda trim mower thats over 20 years old . Enjoy your video's .......
Thanks for all the good info.
Great job well done 👍👍👍
Thank you! Cheers!
The last price on that mower, new, in Kansas City was $750 plus tax before they discontinued it. Technically, that deck is nylon, which is why it's so tough.
I’ve always heard the carb is near impossible to work on. I’ve always just used good fuel and run TruFuel for the first & last use every year. The solution I’d like to see someone come up with is a way to add grease zerks to the rear wheels where the axles go through the bushings in the adjusters.
Love my HRX!
Good stuff Mike. I will be listing that mower for more money.
Great work on the mower. Question> I replaced the carb on mine and it still won't run on low speed...any tips?
I'd be glad to pay 200 for all that. It must run like new.
Nice fix Bob . Take it you drilled the idle jet .
Yes drilled with .016 bit worked well. Just a pain to take on and off the carb 2 times in the drilling process.
Thanks for the vid !
No problem!
Love my Milwaukee M12 gear. I see you do too
I do like it, mostly because it has made me a ton of cash. Going from air to battery has really helped my production speed.
Bob, the older plastic deck Hondas that still pull started from the side would crack at the left front wheel from where people place their foot when starting it.
Yes I remember them, also have seen the aluminum ones like that cracked.
Great video! Those Honda carbs can be a bit cantankerous. Question, is the belt sander you use to sharpen blades homemade?
In my experience those BBC model mowers don't idle smoothly with the blades disengaged but run fine when they are. So I basically wouldn't adjust anything if it ran that way. Maybe the govenor is set to be smooth under load only.
I think they are just leaned out for emission standards. I drilled out the low speed jet it really helped. Before drilling, it revved up fine and cut fine but idle was missing.
There are two main issues with engine surging at low speed and not under load. First, pride of getting it right. The just enough guy says "that is good enough", but the mechanic who cares gets it right. Second, when you go to sell it, it is surging. People notice these issues and then start trying to haggle down on price. Nice trash pick and will sell easily in Spring.
I hate those carbs…they’re even worse on a Chinese knock off. Jets are too sensitive. Thanks for making these videos!
Good to see another video DW.
Is that the correct size rope? It looks like a 5 or a 6. Maybe it oughta be a #4?
wrong rope it needs to be a 4 but I let it go because it looks like it was just put on. Good eye.
Easiest thing to do with a honda mower that surges is replace the carb. But like you said Bob , they suck to install.
Yes this carb is a bear to work on.
I had one that was cracked and had a hole just about blown throw I guess from a rock. It had a large dimple
Ok I have seen rocks break the aluminum decks but not a plastic one yet. Interesting.
i just found one to it started
Need's a thinner weight/gauge pull rope? it looks a little bit thick.
Its 800 bucks now!!!!!!!!!!!
I know this is an old video. My first ti.e seeing it. Did u not notice the broken governor spring laying below the the fuel shut off. Probably had alot to do with ur surging.
Mine dies when I release the stop lever?
Man she was rough apart from the tire and the way the carb is setup I haven't found a way myself I know bruce had those dowels or bolt studs he made to set carbs on those Hondas but I don't like how you can't find tune it without removing the carb .
I agree I got some dowels for next time too.
Also, Do you spray your mower decks with fluid film when you service them?
No spray, but sometimes on my own equipment.
Very interesting…I learned a few things. Thanks so much
The only thing I do different is I pull off the metal plate instead of bending it.
Usually I pull the metal plate too.
Why is only one drive wheel worn out? Is it not possible that the drive pawl/key in the left wheel is stuck and allowing the left side to free wheel?
Actually the black rubber cover fell off the wheel.
Take wheel from your mower and put new one on yours DW6.
I have a Honda engine for sale Dan the man
As some others have said, use dowels to easily re-insert the carb and its gaskets, etc. Below is your pal Bruce P. with a video (about the 4 min. mark) On the HRX, it's easier if you unbolt the metal control bracket (17:20 in your video) first:
ruclips.net/video/huKe7-qzwak/видео.html
That deck, Nexite, shines up pretty good with a coat of tranny fluid as does the recoil housing, etc. I believe Honda compares Nexite's strength to that of motorcycle crash helmets; very tough.
Why not try what you did on a previous video where you retreaded a Honda wheel? Hard to tell on the video, but the hub appears to be Honda.
I'd try to get a around $200 (or even more; Walmart sells a cheapo entry level "push" mower for $200) for that great mower at first. It retailed (with tax) at over $900 when new where I live. It has a blade clutch, larger GCV190, and a hydro tranny. For much of the pandemic, the HRX was not even been available at Home Depot; starting to show up lately though.
Thanks for the tip. I watched the video and it will help me out tremendously. Thank you.
Hey Bob check your "held for review" and see if that comment I left helps you out brother. 👍
I will check it out
Honda isxa lifetime warranty
Honda carbs suck to install.
That Rope Is Too Thick, I would have Let it Go Back 1 Rotation Then Lubed it More.
I have several of those honda starter at my house. You want one? i live in bethlehem. lmk.
Thanks but I'm good.
Bob I feel your pain with this Honda carb set-up, I always hated when one of these would come to my shop needing carb work.
The Lawn Mower Lady has a video out about this issue and the way she avoids all of the hassle. If its ok I'll stick the link here
ruclips.net/video/JJ2AW0OlMYs/видео.html and at the 2 minute mark she explains her solution. I now use her method and it's so much easier. 👍
Thanks for the link she did not mention that she had a video on it. I will be using this method in the future. Still it is a pain to adjust the carb because it can't be done on the machine.
Anytime, yeah the adjustments would be a problem.
Do not like the honda- wouldn't own one ---- I tell people , never buy a mower with more than 2 cables on it
I find the engines reliable and the mulch second to none. Never paid more than $75 for one, but they were used or broken.
honda rewinds are very cheap made
Agree all plastic, but I don't get too many that the plastic breaks on.
GG. YOU DESTROYED THE SHlT OUT OF IT
