At our hourly rate at EP it would be too costly to straighten a blade so we just install new ones and the scrap weight of bent and cracked or worn blades pays off nicely at the scrap yard. Our crankshaft straightener came from Stens and may be made by the same manufacturer but they are great tools that do the job. I used a dial indicator on ours to determine each mark on the gauge is equal to 0.010" and with straightening to 2 marks there is no noticeable vibration. Originally we would smash the crankshaft with a 8 lb. sledge and use an old blade adaptor to protect the crankshaft. Well done video and a real money making tool to invest in if your in the business or flipping mowers.
Well if I would have bought a new blade. I wouldn't have a video on how to fix one. HaHa. I think the stens crankshaft straightener is the same as the mighty midget.
@@doublewide6Good point Bob but just wondering how balanced you were able to get it and was this just for a video or do you do this for customers because some have asked us to and we refused. Mainly for safety reasons on the blades we have no issues straightening crankshafts
That brake holdback at 6:30 is brilliant! Lots of us have parts mowers we can scrounge a cable off of. 🙏🔧👍
Thanks 👍
I have one but its a homemade one i picked up for $40 with briggs clutch wrench it had 2 sleeves also but lost one of them but its helped me out on mowers i repaired also 🔧nice job on the repair and the blade
DW6 is on a different level than me on lawn mower repair...but I sure learn alot...very educated mechanical engineer
Thanks man I’m humbled by your comment
I’m 81 and that’s the first time I’ve ever seen this.That’s awesome 👏
He’s opening himself up to a lawsuit at the crankshaft brakes that blade comes off Guy’s gonna have his leg chopped off
I made cable from your video a few years back. Comes in handy.
Another job well done by the Doublewide fixing a bent crankshaft and I’m surprised you straightened out a blade nicely done
Thanks Hank you’re the man keep watching
Good job on the repair Bob. That mighty Max looks like a nice tool to have!
It sure is if you can use it a couple times a year.
I also have a crankshaft straightener but I won’t do it for anybody but myself because I don’t want sued
Good video! I used to do this on my first job as a small engine mechanic! With the set up my shop had we only would do the long shafts. the short shaft crankshaft would be replaced. We never fixed a bent blade though. Good job!
Thanks for sharing
I'm always impressed with the quality of the briggs andstructed motors because they tolerate such abuse without having to replace many other parts such as the main roller bearings on the drive shaft.
Thank you!
Good work there. Usually on something like this , I part out the engine and scrap it. I have straighten 2 cranks before with a mini sledge hammer. And got it close enough but they weren’t very bent to begin with
I used to scrap them, but then I got the crank shaft bending thing and now I always just straighten them never had an issue
I had no idea bent cranks were fixable. Obviously, you need a jig like that. Nice job!
Some people do it with a hammer some people do it with a pipe, but a dedicated machines gonna get it way closer
I got mine from my father’s business
Only had to drill some new holes is all, works great
You’ve come a long way in the last 3-4 years. I already had bookmarked your video on crank straightening from 4 years ago and your technique on this one is so much better! Your shop looks very different too.
I was surprised to learn one could actually straighten a mower blade using a press instead of a smoke wrench. Now, if I only had a crank straightener. And a press. Well, one thing at a time. 😉🔧👍
That is awesome!
Awesome job bob and thank you for the video.
You are very welcome
That’s a slick jig to straighten a crank shaft.
Yes, and it works fantastically
He’s gonna be sitting in court one day when the crankshaft breaks the guy gets injured
When I first saw crank bending tool on your channel I was floored! Beats the hammer method! I use to get a lot of bent crank shafts from the local land clan. He disappeared and so did the bent cranks. This year had 3 and it has me thinking if I should just bite the bullet and get it.
Great fix as always! Lowes selling craftsman push mowers with bags for $400 plus tax
He should’ve never straighten that blade out he should’ve never straightened the crankshaft out for a customer because he will be in court will not crank chef comes off the blade lumps of the guys foot
wow!
nice fix Bob. amazing!
Glad you like it!
Great work Bob saved another.
Well, if you aren’t selling new mowers, you gotta fix the old ones
You would think the key would sheer. Good tool to have, nice work!
👍 You would think the key would sheer before that kind of damage! great tool!
Great point!
Thanks Bob, great video. Never seen the crank straightened before unless beating it with a hammer counts!!
Well, it works pretty well as you can see
cool tool ! i didn't understand what the bottom bolt was doing till i hit the link and saw the diagram . thanks .
Yeah, it’s a little hard to see, and I couldn’t back up my camera because my lift table was in the way behind me
Cool
Very cool! Didn’t know such a tool existed. I part motors that are bent cranks, not too often. I would have swapped blade, I’m sure u have a stash. Ty for sharing😃
Fixing a blade like that it’s pretty easy to do with a press. I probably have a spare to sitting around too
Have you ever tried to use heat as well when bending?
Impressive you were able to bend the shaft back to true. I am surprised it did not damage the flywheel key.
Yes, I know the timing was right because it started right up in one pole. It would’ve been a good idea to pull the fly wheel. Just a double check.
Wow i cant believe you can buy that tool today with all the liabilities. I thought you found it at an antique sale.
I wish! I had to shell out for it.
Nice video Bob and that Mighty Midget would sure come in handy in my shop. Feel free to send me one. 🤣👍
Now you’re starting to sound like Micks Mowers
🤣🤣 Oh no, shoot me now Big Dog!!!!
I’ll get one in the mail now all I need is mighty midget as a sponsor
While I’m at it, I’ll send one out to hank too.
PS tell Nick to send me a T-shirt
@@doublewide6 Mick not Nick John you see how that works just one letter and it going to be lost in the mail
I'm surprised that the flywheel key wasn't sheared
I thought I had a bent crankshaft but using a dial gage and the crankshaft is fine. The blade looked questionable and I bought a new blade which did not fix the problem. The blade is 3/4" higher on the back than front but from side to side it is perfect. Thus it has to be a bent mower deck housing. So far I have not found anything on this but feel it is very fixable by doing a little bending on the deck. Has anyone had this issue?
Must have been one helluva pipe!
Yes it was!
Where did you get your belt sander that you used on the blade?
I built it. I got the idea from a guy’s channel it’s called housemaid on RUclips 2 x 72 sander.
it's a great tool! nice work. I find it odd that the shaft key doesn't sheer, I saw my neighbor hit a pipe in the yard and it broke the frame away from the engine. something ain't quiet right 😂😂👍👍👍
I should’ve pulled the fly wheel to check the key, but the engine started right up without jerk in the cord out of my hand
What would it cost for this type of repair.
Thank you
You're definitely going to have a lot of haters on here for tweaking the shaft and that blade!😂 LOL I say let them hate
If I would’ve bought a new engine and bought a new blade, I have people that hate me for that too. I can’t win.
Thanks for the video. Saw Taryl do this too
I've looked up the Bent crankshaft straighting tool to get it fixed up those things are not cheap
Use a pipe on the end of the shaft and something pointing at the middle of the shaft to see the bend..... Not as accurate but works.
Yeah, they’re about 300 bucks so if you did to engines with the crankshaft straightener, you’ve already paid for it
It also doubles as an engine stand you can run an engine that’s bolted to it
@@doublewide6 cool beans 🫘 there double wide 6
@@doublewide6 that is so true about that
I'd scrap the blade... cheep enough to just get a new one.
That’s true, but if you scrap it, then you don’t learn how to fix it
I agree, mechanic should AllWAYS try to figure out how to fix and repair everything
The day will come when you have no choice 😊
A guy here in town was charging $60 to do this with same setup.
I thought you threw the shaft away and probably the whole thing and just bought a new mower
You can buy crankshaft that would’ve been better off because Bob gonna be sitting in court one day with the crankshaft breaks
They stopped notifying me about your videos, cutting back on your money I guess 😢😢😢
😮
Does your wife know you took her measuring cup?
Why would anyone waste so much time on a $20 blade that’s so worn out?
I agree with you dude he never got that blade perfectly straight and he put it back on with a partly bent crankshaft he’s opening himself up to a lawsuit with the crankshaft brakes already weekend
