I just love how you don't try to hide anything I mean just showing us a complete process video of making a planner....I don't think there are many illustrators out there willing to show us that and walk us through the steps .. And yet here you are...just casually being an angel and teaching us everything! I can't even being to explain how much I love you and appreciate your videos.

YESSSS!!!! Exactly my thoughts!💖 Fran is the best!! 😍 Most artists and illustrators are so secretive about such things, they even say not to ask where they get things printed or how the have things made. 😓 It's so weird like they are afraid new artists would steal their buisness?? At least that's the only reason I can think of that they are being so stuck-up. 😅

And I know that feeling when you observe someone and you're just like omg they're the most awesomest looking people in the planet and take stalker pictures of them and then draw them hahaha. Thank you for making me feel not alone in this weirdness!!! hahaha Saludos a hamburguesa, cereal y Ed! cheeers!

Gosh, this might be my favourite video of yours. Mostly because i know that feeling of HAVING to draw someone on the street because of their awesome looks and aura, and seeing you do this was so exciting and lovely. and you sharing the stuff you're not as proud of, or even embarassed by, is so encouraging and supportive. youtube is full of 'perfect' drawings and the pressure of doing ANYTHNG perfect at the first try is so immense and dammaging. I appreciate your honesty and transparence so much! and the mix of little beautiful shots of your sorroundings and you casually talking is so charming. Oh! and ! I always, always love just watching you draw, you don't have to apologize for letting us sit with you and watch you do that ! it's the best.
    love xx

I don't usually comment but I just had to this time! I love all your videos but this one was especially important because seeing you challenge yourself and showing us the result (which you think is not perfect but I think is stunning) despite being embarrassed gives me hope and motivation to do this in my own life. I'm not an artist but I'm a PhD student and its really hard to move projects forward sometimes because even though you are passionate, you get too self conscious to get feedback on drafts or practice writing. I really admire that you are modeling behaviors that encourage people to take risks and keep going even when you're not perfect at whatever it is you are trying to do!

    Hi Fran!
Your approaches for those character designs were fantastic! Just as you mentioned, you caught the essence of all of them. Obviously translated to your own style, but they look pretty cool, though. I also agree with the idea of sketching different aspects of a character in order to come with various results, and picking what you like the most then. A good tip for those creativity mind blocks we the artists tend to have from time to time is: life is the most amazing and accurate tool we could've expected ever, because it gives us tons of good stuff to work with (people, for example! :D ). So, yup! I know exactly what you're talking about, LOL! XD
Well, thanks so much for another interesting journey of your life! And we'll be waiting for more.
    Have an excellent week!
    Blessings!!

Yay! I am SO buying that planner! And seriously, those people need their own movie. I'd so watch a Ghibli movie with that character design :D Also really liked seeing the "evolution" of sketching the old man. I have a tendency to give up after the second sketch if it doesn't turn out how I want it to, which is really frustrating sometimes, so it's so nice that you show that everyone struggles with it sometimes :)

I think using strangers as making characters is great
However I'm bit effy about posting their picture directly on the video. I know it is not illega and not mean any harm, you did not actually ask for permission to post it.
If I see that someone posted my picture online which I did not realize it was taken, I would feel very weird and violated and I am worried they might feel the same.

You're so freaking talented! You really captured their essence (at least what I could feel from the photos, I bet their aura was way more palpable in real life!) Just wanted to say thanks for all the tips you provide, you're one of the main reasons I took a short illustration course and am now considering going into 2D animation, but I am very rusty (took a long hiatus from art due to lack of confidence and motivation) so I have lots of practice and catching up to do!

"Turn off the phone and draw what you remember." Right after you finished saying that you didn't have anything to teach us. Even when you don't say anything and you just let us watch you draw, I learn from you. It doesn't have to be an explicit teaching moment. As a teacher though, I do appreciate that teaching takes energy and works better when you are explicit about it, but I learn from you whether you're trying or not.

Such a wonderful video! It's so great that you were struck with so much inspiration by the eccentric table next to you, and the drawings are beautiful. I especially like the differing weight/thickness of the outlines and it was so pretty watching how you layered the colors. I am constantly struck by how great of a video maker you are too, because you have so much talent already with illustration and also in presenting yourself on camera, but from a purely cinematic stand point you also have such a great style and make such casual but also visually interesting choices in your videos. I was so glad when I found your content, am so happy to be a patron, and am always excited to see what you do next!

Fran, I adore your illustrations so much! Your depictions of the old man are incredible. They're so cute and quirky and his mustache is the very best part!
I'm so excited to see you're making a planner, too! Will it be an open-dated planner?? I've always loved planners but I am so scared to buy them because there are certain weeks and months I don't use them and I feel like I waste the beautiful planners I own. I like the idea of open-dated planners because I can use all the pages up when I have a busy schedule and lots of notes.
From what I could see, your planner looks perfect and adorable, I can't wait to see the final product!

i would love to see a video about how you render facial features to fit your style. i tend to really admire more simplified, cartoon-type styles, but i have a hard time editing down all the details i see and am tempted to draw. and when i do simplify my drawings, i cant seem to capture a likeness and they all look the same. but your characters are all so simple yet unique, and also look like the subject. you do it so well! i'd love to see how you do this, maybe using yourself as an example (since you are the character we get to see most in your illustrations). thank you for all the amazing videos and artwork!

This was such a fun and inspiring video!! 💕Thank you for not hiding the process. It's weird but when I see someone's process and it includes parts they are embarrassed about, I never really judge the sketches they don't like. Like I can see the difference between the first and final sketches, obviously. But I dunno, I just never have a judgmental reaction. Plus, it makes your final pieces more impressive, and when put side by side, you can tell what was most important to you when trying to capture these strangers on paper. It's great to know that for everyone, there's still always trial and error, and everyone feels a little embarrassed sometimes. Cos I feel that way all the time, heh. Also it totally makes me want to go out and draw strangers 😍💕💕

I totally recommend painting a light wash in watercolour and then playing with colour pencils on top of that. It creates such cool effects ^_^ Awesome character studies, great job!
