I agree, I don't think artists can ever feel as good at their art as they think they could be. If you think you're not good enough, it's because you think you can do better, so just forget the 'not good enough' bit and focus on 'you can do better' and aim to always be evolving and improving your skills. :)

I'm not an illustrator, I paint in watercolor but girl I love your honesty, I love the fact that you are you and not some fake person who try to get subscribers. You are spontaneous, funny, awesome ... I'm so subscribing to your channel :) Good luck with the book.

Feeling "not good enough" is something that follows artists throughout their entire lives. it's the biggest blessing and a curse, as it can be extremely difficult, but it's also the thing that motivates us to improve. That's literally the main factor in art advancement, because from feeling like you're not good enough, you make the decision to be better. It is continual, never ending, and a constant companion throughout, but the results are often worth it.

My gosh, I really admire you for making this kind of video to help people even though you have a full schedule :) It's strangely comforting to hear that even you feel like you're not good enough sometimes, since I as a fan of your illustrations wouldn't think that about your work! I really agree that it's so important to keep going even if you get the feeling of giving up because you're not good enough, because sometimes improving is such a slow process that it isn't something you notice immediately.

i always try to approach drawing and writing like a challenge in ~creative problem solving~, like solving a riddle or something. makes it more fun to not be able to portray things like i would want them to be portrayed/like i saw them in my head :)

It is so validating to hear you say that you feel that you 'suck' at certain subjects. I have a project that I am REALLY passionate about and would love to see it completed, but I avoid it terribly. It is like I am paralyzed to go forward because I don't feel 'good enough' to tackle it. I procrastinate because I don't feel qualified enough. But I will take your advice to heart, and attempt to draw the subjects I suck at. I'll start my list of things I need to practice. Thank you. Love back at you.

thank you a lot for posting this. I'm dealing with this a lot all the time. I'm a true perfectionist and I get so frustrated all of the time because I never really like what I am doing but I think it is really about "just doing it" and then seeing if it is better of what you have done before :) what you said was really inspirinf and helped me a lot to know I'm not alone. btw you are good enough! xxx Anna

Walking out of your comfort zone is just about the best piece of advice any artist can give. As Marco Antonio De La Parra once said: “style is another name for unpolished flaws” (spanish: “el defecto sin pulir es lo que llamarán tu estilo“). In order to improve we have to draw what we don’t know and we don’t like. In the long run it pays off.

  • @samreenart
    @samreenart 7 лет назад +2

That's so true! We all go through the same feeling/phase. And that feeling of us not being good enough sucks so bad. But we all have to try to let it not affect us and keep doing our best, keep practicing. Cuz that's the only way we'll improve. And as we improve we'll set bigger targets and raise the bars even higher for ourselves. The cycle goes on and on. It's a never ending cycle. And that's growth! So guys, if any of you are going through this phase, just know that you're going the right way and that you're not alone. And it's just a sign of growth! Each one of us is competing with ourselves. And if at all you get caught in that feeling in a negative way, just go through your old artworks, you'll realize how far you've come! And I'm sure it'll instantly make you feel better. 💙

I have to constantly remind my teen daughters that beauty begins in the heart, goes to the mind for processing, and is released to the world in our personality. And that kind of beauty shines so much brighter and stronger than the beauty created by applying products to the skin. Stay beautiful and remember that drawing is only putting shapes together. When confronted with a new figure, it's important to practice putting those shapes together, over and over and over, until it feels natural. I've been at this over 30 years, and I still question my work, every day. If I didn't, it would show. Cheers and thank you for such a wonderful, expressive, and personal presentation. :)

About our opinion on our own illustrations I think we´re very critic on a regular basis and that´s good, it´s always nice to ask someone else (than isn´t too partial :D) to bring you to reality.

Thank you so much for this video. I work in a completely different field to arts, I do science (or I try). I have that same feeling that I am just not good enough. The thing is, after making the list of what I need to know/learn to become better, I have realised that nothing is granted, we need to work hard to achieve our goals and hearing it from you (that even high skilled professionals go through this) has given me the urge to take action and become as good as I want to be.
    Thank you once again

I am right there with you! I am at the end of illustrating a 35 page full-color children's book full of characters and scenes. It has really rocked my confidence as well. Even to the point of feeling an identity crisis as an illustrator. It hurts so deeply to want your art to look a certain way and not be able to execute it. Even though the pain is great, I am actually grateful because it has been a wake up call for me to see the areas I need to improve and to become a student again. In some ways I am starting over the journey... just when I thought I had come to a mountain top, now all I see are taller mountains. But I can't not draw. I am compelled to do this thing called art and it is my life. I was meant to do it. And so were you. You will improve. You will look back and see this is where your work became better and more polished. Growing hurts but it produces some awesome results. I cannot wait to see your friendship book. I know it will be amazing even if you never have the ability to not see your mistakes. We will love it for you! ;) P.S. Your zits are ok with me!

When you said "Not posting until I get better" is SO RELATABLE! This happened to me...When I was a teen I would scan, edit and post sketches within seconds of finishing it because I had this strange need to share everything. Once I hit my 20s I decided to delete so much old work and just post a few times a year....eep...
but just to add...thank you for being real about your struggle currently. I hope things all end up working out and I get to someday read your book!!! I'm sure your style will grow so much with all the constant practice haha

Thanks for the video! It's very liberating to actually -know- you aren't good enough, because you just are not getting work. I was in the position of being able to take on freelance work full-time for a bit last year and shopped my stuff around. Nothing. No bites. It sucked, and we were really tight on money for a while. Then, out of the blue, I got a full-time job doing graphic design (what I studied in college) with benefits and a new apartment and a new city. Now I can take those outside and self critiques and check out books and watch videos and practice the things I'm not good at. One day I hope I can go full-time with illustration, but not today. It's liberating. Some advice I got that's stuck with me: "You don't have to do it all today"

i'm drawing a comic and i was trying to avoid doing everything i was bad at, but after finishing a few sketched pages i felt really bad about continuing ... so I started again with everything i actually wanted to show even though i was pretty bad. it is really challenging and nerve wrecking but it made me improve so much !! and now i'm way less ashamed and stressed when i post and show my pages.
So if there's anyone here thinking "im still not good enough to start my comic" well that's actually a good opportunity to be better faster !
I was only good at backgrounds and sceneries and now i clearly improved in facial expressions, faces, inking, colors, movements and anatomy (in one year of drawing my webcomic) i still have many many flaws but i'm still practicing !
Let's practice more guys ! Also thanks Fran for motivating me so much ! 😘
(and sorry for that weird long comment xD)

My personal art goal for this year would be to establish my own shop and start doing commissions. I'm going to really embrace your advice and just work on improving my flaws, and push myself to be better so I can generate more interest in my work so I can open a shop! Good luck with meeting your deadline, Fran. I know you're going to succeed :)

I relate so much on what you're saying. I had no courage to post drawings on my Instagram because I feel like I'm not good enough. But you made me realize something. Thank you so much. more power to you Fran

I'm working on a book right now and I agree, I feel like it's testing me every time I sit down to work on it! It has everything that I'm uncomfortable drawing, so it makes it so hard to feel motivated to work on it. I'm almost afraid to work on it, so I'll distract myself by doing mundane tasks like folding laundry instead.
Then, when I'm working on it and it's not going well, it takes me into a downward spiral that makes me lose all motivation to do anything for the rest of the day. Woo, what a rush! :D
p.s. I never could imagine how daunting a graphic novel must be. One day at a time, hang in there!

Dear Fran, I loved this video and your vulnerability. Man, are you courageous!
I absolutely get how you feel: I'm working on a graphic novel about mental health, my own personal story. And man, it's rough. Not only technically because I too feel not good enough as an illustrator/artist, but also the story is tearing me apart again.
Thank you for your wonderful tips! I'm making my 'legit'-list right now. Thanks so much for being you! x

oh man i know it wasn't the main point of the video but that bit about makeup at the beginning...i really felt that. my relationship with makeup is so up and down, sometimes i feel like it's fun and cool and other times i feel like it makes me less of myself and when i go through the process of putting on makeup in those moods i feel so...weird?? and not in a good way. anyways, i know that was a major tangent, but just wanna say again how much i love your videos. hope you're having a good day fran!

Ohh..Being not good enough implies not only to my art, but to life in general. If somebody telling me they don't ever care about others opinion or they completely accepted themselves as they are - this make me laugh. Because no way! We all compare ourselves in what we do. Sometimes I think that I was better two years ago! which is insane :) And you know! You know it! that there is always exeptions. Like something that you did or create that you do love. it is yours. And that is why it is good enough. The way out for me is to go along with this feeling, remebering that there's no white without black)) . Cause the only thing that matters is that you keep going, keep creating. Keep living.
Thank u for making videos. Probably u sametimes struggle with what u put up here, but I'm so glad that u keep doing it anyway.

Fran!

First of all, amen to hormonal, stressy zits on chins! I've been covering up mine with makeup to a point where I was like, "What am I doing? This is not helping AT ALL and people can see it anyways."
Now, to the video, I can relate - again - so much! I've been there so often where I kept telling myself I was not good enough to draw for example stories/situations. And that the only thing I was good enough at was drawing animals. It's such a relief to hear somebody say "I keep drawing the same things." and "I'm really bad at doing that." I mean, it feels good to hear that somebody either goes through the same and/or has gone through the same. Which turned out to be my remedy. Knowing I'm not alone.
When you started doing your daily animal challenge, I was so hesitant at first join in. I'm so behind though, but I'm really glad I started it. To be honest, it feels as if I'm going through such a struggle. I'm not used to drawing an animal in a position that's not a "typical animal position". At the same time I'm learning so, so much and I have to push through.
Thank you so much for making this video and sharing your experience!
