Best version I have heard....the brass is insane, 1st horn is a goat lol also I think the sound engineer deserves a medal for this recording, the balance is perfect highlighting the melodies and supporting instruments

There is a great deal superior Strauss to the Alpensinfonie, but this recording more than does it justice. Bravo to SF and Blomstedt.
Wonderful play of Eine Alpensinfonie! Grew up w the Weiner Plil recording, but Blomstedt and S.F. is even better. His tempos are fast when need to be and slow when lyrical. More so than Wein. Thanks Godbluffer! Good call! Peace and love brother.
This symphony has always been a sort of obsession to me. I have 4 or 5 recordings of it, don't like much any of them, heard many others, but the harmonies always seem a little muddied, had to buy the score to understand what was happening, specially in the very beginning. I know this is a very complex piece of music with many voices, many instruments fighting for preeminence and not all conductors can manage to put each one on its place and let all of them be heard. Well, Mr. Blomstedt does the miracle in this recording-The balance and the tightness of the sound is like nothing I have heard before and I can hear all the instruments.Thank you very much Mr. Godbluffer and every time I want to hear this magnificent masterpiece I'll came here, no doubt,

accidentally came upon this when looking for alpine horn music, oml how lucky of a stumble this was, strings had me the entire time, each and every single instrument is used into its full potential with sound and everything masterfully worked, I love this. horn and strings were done so amazingly, Thank you for uploading this Godbluffer

I'm listening to this recording over and over. I've only just discovered the power of RS and this seems to be a very fine recording.

Everything Blomstedt did with the SF Symphony was awesome - every single recording. For my money, they were the best orchestra in the US during his tenure.

Agreed, and I think they still are! Listen to Rite of Spring (in SF or Proms), Mahler 7, their recent Schumann cycle, Tchaikovsky 4-6 (and compare recent MTT and Blomstedt in Tchaikovsky 5!) Short Ride in a Fast Machine, etc.
But yes, so many amazing recordings with Blomstedt: Beethoven Eroica, Sibelius 1 and 2/Valse Triste, Schubert 9/Overture In the Italian Style, Bartok Concerto for Orchestra, (2nd mvmt especially!), Bruckner 6, Mahler 2, Brahms German Requiem, Peer Gynt, Carmina Burana, Til Eulenspiegel...
The Spokane Symphony performed this as the finale in our conductor’s final concert, couldn’t have asked for a more memorable experience
I was introduced to this piece with Von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic... it was a video presentation with the conductor keeping his eyes closed the whole time. such intensity! However, The Blomstedt in many ways is far superior... the lushness of the strings and the tempi won me over. The San Francisco Symphony is superb here. BRAVO orchestra and Maestro!
Going to see the SFS play this in a few months under Bychkov! Love anything Strauss! It's all soooo amazing.
calihornplayer Bychkov is great with the SFS too! I saw him do an amazing Shostakovich 10 in SF maybe around 5-10 years ago. (Luis Baez was fantastic on clarinet, as they hadn’t hired Carey Bell yet.)

the video's volume is a bit too low but otherwise a brilliant record.
I know what you mean with the volume being on the low side, but it's an exact copy of the CD. It's an inescapable byproduct of the recording's wide dynamic range, and it would have caused distortion if I had tried to make it louder.

John Williams clearly “borrowed” those violin flourishes at 7:30 for a bunch of movies. Oh well - nothing new under the sun.
I could nor believe that on 3:27 nearly no drum was heard, sounds boring in comparison to kempe, karajan, harding or luisi. For sure the rest of the performance was great played, Blomstedt said often that the San Francisco orchestra was at this time at the same level like the Staatskapelle Dresden (his former Orchestra).
It’s just that you have poor ears.
