  • Jean Sibelius (8 December 1865 - 20 September 1957), was a Finnish composer and violinist of the late Romantic and early-modern periods. He is widely recognized as his country's greatest composer and, through his music, is often credited with having helped Finland to develop a national identity during its struggle for independence from Russia.
The core of his oeuvre is his set of seven symphonies, which, like his other major works, are regularly performed and recorded in his home country and internationally. His other best-known compositions are Finlandia, the Karelia Suite, Valse triste, the Violin Concerto, the choral symphony Kullervo, and The Swan of Tuonela (from the Lemminkäinen Suite). Other works include pieces inspired by nature, Nordic mythology, and the Finnish national epic, the Kalevala, over a hundred songs for voice and piano, incidental music for numerous plays, the opera Jungfrun i tornet (The Maiden in the Tower), chamber music, piano music, Masonic ritual music, and 21 publications of choral music.
Sibelius composed prolifically until the mid-1920s, but after completing his Seventh Symphony (1924), the incidental music for The Tempest (1926) and the tone poem Tapiola (1926), he stopped producing major works in his last thirty years, a stunning and perplexing decline commonly referred to as "The Silence of Järvenpää", the location of his home. Although he is reputed to have stopped composing, he attempted to continue writing, including abortive efforts on an eighth symphony. In later life, he wrote Masonic music and re-edited some earlier works while retaining an active but not always favourable interest in new developments in music.
The Finnish 100 mark note featured his image until 2002, when the euro was adopted. Since 2011, Finland has celebrated a Flag Day on 8 December, the composer's birthday, also known as the "Day of Finnish Music". In 2015, the 150th anniversary of the composer's birth, a number of special concerts and events were held, especially in the city of Helsinki.

Is that St. Pete Fla.? We could be neighbors. Who knows? I don't know what these other guys who replied must be thinking. Tchaikovsky?! He composed "pretty" but not much else. I think he suffers from being too popular and too sweet. Prokofiev and Rachmaninoff, they had intellect and soul! But I also love Sibelius though I discovered him relatively late in my life.

Sibelius was inspired of Tchaikovsky, and .. listen, you can hear this inspiration in many of Sibelius` compositions. They both are great Romantics; Sibelius was a composer and violinist of the late Romantic and early-modern periods. His music is often credited with having helped Finland to develop a national identity during its struggle for independence from Russia.

People tend to group composers together by period but also by nationality, and there are many more French/Italian/Russian/German composers than Finnish ones, so I think it's very easy for newbies to classical music overlook Sibelius. Which is disappointing, because he was brilliant.

Great to have the magnificent 2nd symphony here, but I'm not sure this is an ideal cross-section of Sibelius' best. Of course it's hard to do such a master justice in just over an hour, when symphonies and some of his longer works really need to be heard in full. And it's also a matter of taste. I would say the violin concerto, which I love, is essential, and I also really like the Karelia suite. Others have their own favourites, so you can't please us all, but thanks a lot for the upload :)

If I were drawing up a list of Sibelius' best, I would include at least the Second Symphony, the Fifth Symphony, the Violin Concerto, Finlandia, the Swan of Tuonela, and the Valse Triste. I'm also a big fan of Tapiola, but nobody I know agrees with me on that one.

Hardly his best or greatest music. Also in this selection: I've never heard At the Castle Gate played almost as a waltz. It loses some of its grandeur. I remember as a child shivering as it was the intro music to the BBC's (longest running tv programme) Sky at Night in awe of its ruggedness and the ascending ending.

Criminal! But I think that when Sibelius was born, Finland was part of Sweden. Still, he was definitely NOT ethnically Swedish. I have a feeling he would not appreciate being labeled as such!

With more thought and better presentation, it would have been much better. Most of the best of Sibelius is missing from this collection. An opportunity missed i feel. Sorry to be negative.

The famous and victoriously sounding part of this symphony starts at that moment. Sibelius was in Prague and he heard a cleaning woman whissling this melody. "Hm, perhaps I could use that", Sibelius thought and actually did just that. He told this to some of his friends later, and that is why we know this.
