  • The harvest season is in full swing! More and more veggies and fruits are ready to be picked, so we have our hands (and bellies) full. We're not complaining, this is a very exciting part of gardening, and we're ready for the fruits of our labour. But we have to be always on the watch for pests to make sure we have something left to harvest.

      You don't eat peas raw, Liliana? That's so common here. They are green, soft and juicy, of course only when they are young 😊 As someone said they are also parts of Chinese food, with the pods too 😁 Yeah, I always forget to film the recipe when I make something, because I usually make it for the first time and I don't know by that time if it won't be a disaster. Then it looks nice and I have to show at least the final product 😊 Thank you, and hopefully it's not too cold in Argentina 😉

    Also I don't know if you can have crickets or frogs in your area but we use those to control smaller insects without chemicles. Plus they are very musical if you get the right ones.

    • @tommyandpeter
      @tommyandpeter  Месяц назад +2

      We do have them here, but not in huge amounts. Nature always finds its way, and when there are small insects that are prey, the predators will naturally come. But with pests it is not so easy. The Colorado potato beetle is invasive and doesn't have natural predators here in Central Europe. Also they often come in huge amounts and can multiply exponentially in a few weeks. Same with the brown spanish slugs. That's why it is kinda cute when people advise us about using eggshells or ashes and stuff like that. It wouldn't stop the disaster. If only it were so easy. It can work for small numbers but not on these invasive things that specialize in one plant and all of a sudden there are billions of them, and they destroy everything in a couple of days.

    • @WalkiTalki
      @WalkiTalki Месяц назад

      @@tommyandpeter You are exactly right. If the beetle is not local you do NOT have any preditors. One year my roses had aphids really bad. I ordered a large bag of ladybugs online. By the end of summer there were no aphids to be found. People think of ladybugs a slow and passive. But when introduced to an area full of lavea they get ravenous. Also the sparrows that I have seen in your videos love ladybugs. If you get a large quantity you will attract more sparrows and they will also eat the leaf worms. You just have the wrong frogs or not enough of them. Tree Frogs will also eat snails. And forget that egg shell nonsense. It doesn't work for anything.

    I just looked up the place on Ebay and they have 3000 ladybugs for 35dollars. Cut a side out of a cardboard box next to the potatoes then turn the box upside down on top of the ladybugs after dumping them out of the packaging. That is all that is required. You may need to remove the adult potato bugs yourself but the ladybugs will strip the eggs. Plus there is nothing more beautiful than laying in the sun and having ladybugs flying around you.

    • @tommyandpeter
      @tommyandpeter  Месяц назад

      Thanks. We have a lot of ladybugs in the garden and we love them. They eat mainly aphids. But even so, aphids or the potatoe beetles (their eggs and larvae) come all at once in big numbers and ladybugs are not able to eat them all at the beginning. Of course later they can manage and they also reproduce more when they have a lot to eat. But the pests can destroy everything in a few days, so it isn't enough. So when there are no pests and no catastrophe, the ladybugs won't just wait hungry in the garden and they will spread to the surroundings. Once the pests come, it takes longer for the ladybugs to come back and multiply, and by then everything could be already destroyed. Hope it's understandable. It's the same with other animals in the natural cycle - for example field mice (voles) and birds of prey. When there are too many of mice, the numbers of birds of prey will also rise, but it always takes time...

    White currants are supposed to be sweeter than their red cousin. I had a white currant bush some years ago, but couldn't taste any major difference, so not sure how true that is.
    This year I had a Jostaberrybush for the first time, but can't say I like the berries - the initial taste is like black currants, but then they just taste bitter. Ironically my black currants are less "harsh" this year (I find black currants to have a too strong flavour for my taste, but this year they seem better to me)

    • @tommyandpeter
      @tommyandpeter  Месяц назад

      That is so interesting about josta berries. They are not supposed to be bitter at all, just sour. A bit less sour than black currants (because they are hybrids between black currants which are sour and gooseberries which are sweet). Maybe you had some weird variety 🤷
      From our experience white currants are very similar to red currants, maybe even a bit more sour. We've read that there is a variety called pink currants which are sweeter 😁
      From this 'family' of berries, gooseberries are the best because they are sweet, but in our garden they don't grow that well. But there are so many subvarieties of everything, like red currants could be bigger, smaller, sweeter, bearing fruits earlier or later, and so on. It's endless 😁

    • @saethman
      @saethman Месяц назад
