I signed up to go on a tour with Azizi Life, and I did the home food tour. It turned out to be even better than I was expecting, and truly a glimpse into rural life and a community in Rwanda. The food, the culture, and the dancing after lunch was one of the highlights of the day!
Muhanga Town - In the morning we first drove from Kigali to Muhanga Town, about an hour outside of Kigali. The green mountain roads were spectacular. Rwanda is known as the land of 1000 hills, and I think that might be an underestimation as there are never ending hills in this part of Central Africa.
After being warmly greeted and welcomed by the community of ladies, we first went to go fetch water. This is something many of us, myself for sure, take for granted. But in the rural countryside of Africa, even in cities, there are many people who have no running water, and when they need water for anything, they must walk to the well or source of freshwater, and carry all the water they need. It’s something to always remember.
Next we got started cooking all the food. Most of the ingredients for the Rwandan feast they cooked were from right there, on the hillside, from the small family farms. We had dozens of different vegetables, and of course - beans which were one of the most important foods of this regions of Africa. It wouldn’t be Rwandan food without beans as I’ve heard! Final dish was akabenz, a famous Rwandan pork dish.
You could taste the freshness of all the ingredients. The food was honestly a little plain for my usual taste buds, but I fully appreciated the natural ingredients, the simplicity of the dishes, and the love poured into each dish.
After eating a giant Rwandan feast, all of a sudden they started breaking out into dance. It was one of the highlights of this entire experience.
Thank you to the entire community for hosting us and to Azizi Life for setting it up!

Mark should be nominated a UNICEF ambassador . His details and respect for the different places he has been makes him a good representative. The public broadcasting network should also start offering him a 30min slots.
weaslebee ...ur spot on
weaslebee wont work, mark isn’t corrupt
I think he should get a Nobel Peace Prize for promoting cultural understanding (the comment by Stiitch notwithstanding).
👍✔️
Yeh, he deserves.
5:56 see how African kids are so kindly and strong, the boy just introduced himself to Mark by asking his name.

moureen mbuu Agnes Sinja Africa atleast u save yourself from these white people and all their artificial things. They will introduce chemical cosmetics, machines for everything then slowly try to take over the basic needs ie given by God as free will be sold by them, thereby making us slaves. They will sell seeds of hybrid/GMOs ie Non-reproductive, chemical mineral water. Whites main motive is to become God to us by making us depend on them for all basic needs, like food ie seeds of Non-reproductive varieties that will make u depend on seed companies every year and what they give us is waste seeds and already because of them 500000 farmers have committed suicide in India, their chemical mineral water will damage kidneys, they will make u depend on them for giving birth and for becoming pregnant ie they will sell sperms, surrogacy, Artificial Insemination, etc., The only good thing that they do is telling about Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Again ,they use his name to spread their chemicals and worst culture lastly will mislead u and say he is not there. Be careful, Most importantly they will spread deadly diseases by mixing lab made bacteria or virus in water sources, kill many and then will Start giving chemical medicines and vaccines and there by open their pharmaceutical business. @@SVP884 they have already done that..GMOs,chemicals and all the stuff..it is too shameful how people are running crazy because of these things

Is that his son?
It's the same as child actors grow up in front of the audience's eyes.
Bianca De La Cruz Yes, Micah is their son. He can even walk now.
Foodie i know right 😍 he can walk now🤗
The food is cooked in an Indian style. I am an Indian and I really appreciate the African spirit. The love and honesty and hospitality and clean heartedness if Africans. I really appreciate your culture. Lots of love from India.
What is Indian style cooking anyway? Your comment seems discrediting to Rwandies way of cooking. Africans/Rwandies are done being discredited for what is thiers/ours.Give credit were it’s due without comparison.
indian style 😜😜😂
The food is cooked in RWANDAN style, period.

Thank you Karmini.
Karmini Parsan he is one of a kind and is lucky to have a childhood that teach him about other cultures.
Yes kudos all around, much kudos.kudo goo.gl/search/Kudo+roots+of+the+word?
Kudos | Define Kudos at Dictionary.com In the 19th century, kudos1 entered English as a singular noun, a transliteration of a Greek singular noun kŷdos meaning “praise or renown.” It was at first used largely in academic circles, but it gained wider currency in the 1920s in journalistic use, particularly in headlines: Playwright receives kudos. Then again it can be from the Indian kuddo meaning turnips - "well done !you deserve all the kudos coming your way"
Karmini Parsan this is so true ❤️
Mark is just a strong follower of Jesus Christ, that is why he is who he is..His father is a pastor and a Christian missionary..
I’m from Rwanda 🇷🇼 I really like how you respected our culture, is amazing!!!
May I ask how your family fared during the dark days of 1994? I vividly remember when the genocide started in April of that of year. I heard a report on the radio and had to look up information on your country at my university's library (this was pre-internet by a couple years). Anyway, I hope they all survived and are doing well.
Good pllz sand your mobile no

@Mark Rigsby I'm sorry for your loss friend.
@Mark Rigsby I didn't mean to refer to you. Got you confused with the original poster. I'm more than familiar with the story. Colonial rule by the Belgians, divide and conquer of Hutus and Tutsis brought long simmering ethnic tensions to the surface, post-colonial rule saw periodic pogroms of the tutsi minority population by the ruling hutu majority. Which led to a crisis in the early 90s and civil war. Breakdown of the UN brokered peace process, and the downing of a plane carrying the president of Burundi, kicks off genocide led by the hutu extremist government and their proxies in the interahamwe militia. By the end of April 2004, close to 900,00 are dead. It had nothing to do with culture my friend. Unless you want to call hate and genocidal rage culture. Again, thought you were the OP.
I'm from Rwanda our culture is really amazing.I like how Mark testing food from different countries very yummy

Kenya is amazing country loved by whole world
The leafy greens looks a lot like what we call callaloo here in 🇯🇲.. goes well with saltfish(codfish).. Also goes well with fried corned-pork 😍
Same thing I was thinking…I’m Jamaican too.
my eye were immediately filled with tears when you said the air is getting thin while carrying just one and the little boy was carrying two 5:55 me and my son are beyond blessed to live in a country where i feel like we are very spoiled. i use to live with my step mom who was a horrible human being she would not allow me and my brothers to eat "her food" and would make us starve at time and even then God had a salvation army where they use to feed the homeless and they had clean water and food. clean water and food is never a problem in america, is our souls that is a problem. unlike them who have to walk far just to go get water, very humble loving caring people. i humble my self before God when it comes to what i have, where i live and everything that not to many people have. keep making more videos like this mark ♥
This the life I have passed through for good 25years imagine, don't think you can go to Fitch water once ,you have to go back like five times,I was so surprised by mike he was tried with only one ,
you are so damn wrong. A lot of people suffer from contaminated water and not enough food or not nutritious enough food. Wake up, Americans are ducking dying from this
thats healthy fresh water directly from the mountains..most Africa and even in India.. there are many rural areas where they fetch water from long distances... I like the way Mark is so humble..
wow afirika
This was excellent! My students really enjoyed it.
Thank you for visiting beautiful Rwanda,Africa.
To say that this video is superb would be an understatement. It is beyond anything I’ve seen to date and I echo the many sentiments already mentioned here that you’ve captured the life and culture of Rwanda along with the food. Mark - you’ve set a new bar for rest of the food bloggers to follow- by embracing the culture and by capturing the everyday life of the people in the areas you visit. Thank you!
Thank you Mark for this video. I was so amazed by the little boy who was fetching not one but two receptacles of water, he is strong. He does this everyday for his family. Nowadays it's hard to get a kid to take out the trash.
I’ve been following you for years and I appreciate your love and respect for African culture , your heart is of gold ❤️🙏🏾❤️
I love the way you respect all people in their culture,I wish you all the best 🙏👍😍😀

Typical answer of the older generation, no hate on you Diana, but there are a dozen different platforms that can reach your audience before you stoop to cable television. Television kills creativity, keep the content uncontrolled by higher powers.

Which stupid person put dislike? This is an amazing video without fake people, but souls that suffer and try to survive, and a hospitality that you don’t find in our civilized world
Since it's a food channel I think ppl just like or dislike based on whether they think the food looks appetizing to them or not. I doubt anyone with a soul would dislike the video based on the merits you listed.
Some they don’t have soul

We live in a "civilized" culture where appreciation for many things are lost. This throw away society works so hard for what they have, just to throw it away for bigger and newer. It is good to see people that live with basics and are happy. The daily tasks of survival replace our gyms. Family interactions replace our technologies. Thank you for this video.
Love Africa! Kisses from Brasil

I had to share this on my Facebook. I am in tears from watching this. I wish people would understand that we are all striving for the same things in life and that we need to value and love one another like this community does. Mark, thank you times a billion for your beautiful content. I am in absolute awe at the way you so beautiful present cultures to us. Gracias ♥️ Kisses to my favorite baby boy, Micah.
