@@robertbraun7155 Yes, both can be true! They are very similar: one is on the macro level and one on the micro level. Our founding fathers were cognizant of the need for both and went to great lengths to preserve those through the Constitution and our current government is working to erode those protections. Our Fourth Amendment rights to be secure in our property and particularly in our homes is one of the very most basic and necessary rights. When the castle doctrine is not an option on the water and the government can come into your home at any time, for any reason, you have no privacy or protection in what should be your most protected space. That is why the laws about RVs are different than for cars, for instance. Without that protection of their home space, a citizen is entirely exposed to governmental intrusion. Likewise, the border situation renders us entirely exposed in our home country. Both the “borders” of our individual homes and the borders of our collective home should be maintained by law and respected by the government.
I stopped in a port in Northern California once to fuel up on my way to Canada. Got boarded & inspected. My flares had expired while I was in transit from Mexico. The CG said they would cite me if I didn’t replace them before I left. So, I had to hitch a ride into a small town 5 miles away to buy new flares. Fortunately, one of the locals gave me a ride & back.🙄 I have some flares that are 30 years old that still work. I use them for starting beach fires.
Yeah, nice scam making you buy new sealed tubes of non-expiring solid chemicals. Here it's every 18 months for any vessel that does more than put around a lake.
I've done a lot of sailing on Yaquina bay in Oregon and if you have on a life jacket they generally leave you alone if you don't it's a guaranteed pull over.

the CG is there to protect folks. They generally do just try to make sure you are safe enough. If you have problems, and need rescuing, they are there for you. If you were on a highway, you don't usually need rescuing. On the water, you do. Their questions really weren't that offensive. You have a homemade boat. They are going to just try to make sure you are safe enough. They really just wanted to make sure he knew what he needed to get his boat up to snuff.
@@paulkramer4176 That used to be true. On the great lakes there use to be a time you could go to them for safety inspection and receive a Coast Guard Sticker showing you had your inspection. Where I got my "water wings" on the Chesapeake over 30 yrs. ago, the USCG are always present and checking. Yeah, a lot of time they are just breaking in new recruits,, but I was always happy to oblige. They are just doing their job. If you boat on potentially dangerous waters, and do not understand your responsibilities as a captain, then you need to go back to your rowboat on the duck pond. Also, when you have an outgoing tide, and 7 1/2 footers at your bow and are taking on water, remember that the "kid" that may have dinged you for outdated flares could be answering your mayday call for help. And, he will not give up until you are safe. Just my $.02
it is what it is, you may understand better as your travels take you to the Chesapeake Bay. So far your trip has not presented any "real" water for you to deal with. I enjoy your videos, and best of luck to you and the pup!
Love that you were clear that you had priorities and their timing was dubious. Nice job handling all things with aplomb, Brenton! Not the most professional moment of the USCG's history! Onwards!
And suppose you came upon someone else in trouble in the water? It might be nice to be able to throw them something other than an anchor, don’t you think? 😊
I’ve been stopped by Sheriffs before, but only one time by Coast Guard. Its was on the border of Michigan & Canada on St Mary river system. I will say they were very courteous and I did have two problems they could given me tickets for but just gave me a warning. But I will also say I know rules and regulations for what has to be on board, safety, etc etc. I asked them about a couple items and they said I didn’t need them, bull, because I have my boat safety checked and I have a friend in Coast Guard Auxiliary he will stand behind my thoughts and what is needed. So they don’t know everything!!
Buy a brand new life ring, or two, stencil your name on it with port of registry underneath, hang it in full visibility on the back and/or front of the house and you will not only have a necessary piece of emergency equipment, it may even keep the Coasties from boarding you. But generally, the boarding party is not the ones who ordered it.
Im glad it wasn't a terrible experience as much as i want to be against them bothering good citizens however ive seen enough of people on the bad side and thats why they have to do what they do unfortunately.
I know hudson. Spent years down there. In the sixties , i helped a guy put a boat together and he took it down to the gulf of Mexico. Glen gerson was his name. He was from California. I believe he was a congress man later in life . He was featured in a national geographic magazine.
The risky boats get passed by, they like to stop casual boaters because they don't shoot at them. Also you are likely to pay any fines. They are like traffic cops, citations are departmental revenue.
USCG are required to board a certain percentage of registered vessels in a designated area. They aren't doing it to pick on you and would MUCH rather pull over a boat full of chicks.
Looks like the NOTNILC got you. Oh BIG BROTHER. That should be so illegal. And this just on the heels of learning from several newly ticketed neighbors who have been victims of our new SPEED cameras on our main drag in Salem. Cited for 5mph over. What would we do without all of these agencies watching our every move? You did great Brenton and Wavey.
Make sure you train Wavey to throw you your new flotation device in case you fall overboard. (You should have told them that guests and passengers are not allowed on the boat, so the throwable would be useless).
That was hard to watch, but good job keeping your cool under the circumstances. I’m betting it happens again before you get out of the Chesapeake Bay. I live here and they are all over Norfolk, Hampton and Baltimore.

I'm glad they found you SAFE. That is their job. Especially when making a transit.
I agree. They even made recommendations on how to be safer and provided you with a card so that you wouldn't be inconvenienced again.
Your job is to pilot safely.
Their job is to collect a wage.
Fortunately, one of the locals gave me a ride & back.🙄
I have some flares that are 30 years old that still work. I use them for starting beach fires.
Yeah, nice scam making you buy new sealed tubes of non-expiring solid chemicals. Here it's every 18 months for any vessel that does more than put around a lake.
I’m surprised you got that far without being checked
They have a right to board any vessel that has a contract with them. License permit registration all those are contracts
Their "rights" are imposed on you without consent by the state.
I've done a lot of sailing on Yaquina bay in Oregon and if you have on a life jacket they generally leave you alone if you don't it's a guaranteed pull over.
If that is his home, they can perform the safety check, however they still need a warrant to board him
They did a body cavity search of Wavy for contraband and found Wavy Treats instead.
Recycled treats ;)
Big brother letting you know.
She was a real treat
I was a boat dealer & broker in the 90s used to get stopped quite often. Never had them board. They always just asked me to show them the equipment. Looks like times have changed.
I honestly feel that anybody that would see this vessel would question its sea worthiness
@@glenngray1201Our friend at the Lake of the Ozarks did ask them that...and they did. He was completely Coast Guard approved so all was well with him.
Brainerd? Reminds me of the movie Fargo :) You betcha
Tyrants 💯
I've been a commercial fisherman in Florida for 40 years the Coasties board me at least once a year check my paperwork my safety equipment and make sure all of my fish are legal in the box its never been an issue because i keep up with everything it may seem annoying but if your vessel is going down theyre the ones who are going to come and save you its a small price to pay and they may be curt but they are professional and to the point personally im glad they're out there roaming around keeping an eye on things
Another great episode!
Props to you for keeping such professional composure during that tyrannical situation. Excellent job sir.
Spoken like someone who's never witnessed tyranny.
@@SandDownSouth I know right.
@@SandDownSouth Spoken like someone who thinks rights are granted by governments

some puddle pirates with nothing to do but mess with good folks
F the coast guard. I hate that they don’t need a warrant.
I get boarded by CG about twice a year in Lake Michigan. It's annoying even when they're cool, and sometimes they're not cool. But they've also helped me out a couple times over the years, so I'm glad they're there.
Dude..I really want to read the book you put out on the internet..the one I think when you had the story time Brenton’s adventure in Alaska..you know the one I mean bet is amazing
I don't like it when law enforcement goes fishing.
Absolutely 💯!! Fishing expedition. I'm sure they kept a hand on their sidearms
Maybe they think they are on the Mekong in 68'
Our heroes 😂😂😂😂
the CG is there to protect folks.
A proactive approach compared to what they do today - what can we catch him with is usually the attitude in place. To hell with the woke assholes today.
I told them to leave in middle of heavy chop and need to be focused on driving . Now that’s unsafe and dangerous to the captain and his ship
When your treading water with a 70 ft long sea creature and they jump in with you. Thank you coast guard
I feel violated every time that happens
That’s because it is indeed a violation.
Good ole Brainerd folk. Not much there anymore but beautiful places and sad faces. I can understand why you left. What an adventure
Brainerd a nice little city ;)
They patrol the waterways and I'm glad they do. I've been boarded before showed them what they asked for and they politely left.
Man you even said I’m dropping her down to idle… you know all the verbiage and you kept her calm so freaking well man I don’t know how you did it but cool man
Hey man..did you ever watch Dr. Who as a kid.. the original one..lol
That wasn’t too bad. I thought you handled that well!
Always mind what they want to do, it usually involves violating your rights.
Making sure you play by the rules.
Just my
$.02
Yes yes. We've heard the "they're just doing their job for your safety" argument
it is what it is, you may understand better as your travels take you to the Chesapeake Bay. So far your trip has not presented any "real" water for you to deal with. I enjoy your videos, and best of luck to you and the pup!
As a South African it’s mind blowing how they blow up everything and actually they know nothing??
Love that you were clear that you had priorities and their timing was dubious. Nice job handling all things with aplomb, Brenton! Not the most professional moment of the USCG's history! Onwards!
What is your definition of professional then?
@@robertbraun7155 why do you ask? Are you asserting this was the most professional moment in the USCG history?
you need a floating cushion to throw to somebody to save them even though you’re traveling alone?!?!?
And suppose you came upon someone else in trouble in the water? It might be nice to be able to throw them something other than an anchor, don’t you think? 😊
@@tommegan6500 😝👍😎
What if I didn’t ?
I would hail the coast guard and let them take the person home.
Just kidding. Would back my stern up to them so they can climb the swim ladder. The floater would still be in its original packaging with the tags.
The Shanty's fire extinguisher is older than the dill weed inspecting.
There's busy body Karen's (male ans female) behind every tree...would not surprise me
Im glad it wasn't a terrible experience as much as i want to be against them bothering good citizens however ive seen enough of people on the bad side and thats why they have to do what they do unfortunately.
do you have flares or electronic beacon sos kit?.. you think having another boat and motor on board would account for extra safety in emergence
There's loads more of them here in Cape Fear, NC
Coast Guard fishing expedition , and they are determined to catch something. Looks like with all of the searching be done, a warrant is necessary.
I always wondered about those type 4 throwables on solo voyages. If you fall over, who's gonna throw it to you?
All good 👍
So what would the law be if you wanted to have a firearm aboard your vessel? Does it vary by state or is it different being on the water?
Land of the free!
USCG are required to board a certain percentage of registered vessels in a designated area. They aren't doing it to pick on you and would MUCH rather pull over a boat full of chicks.
I'm sure she would have preferred that
U.S. Coastguard, pirates you get in to trouble for avoiding.
They do this to citizens and let terrorists and a lot of garbage freely sail through the border.
Make sure you train Wavey to throw you your new flotation device in case you fall overboard. (You should have told them that guests and passengers are not allowed on the boat, so the throwable would be useless).
All about that $$$$
That's mental, glad we don't get bothered like that in Ireland 😬
the coast guard will always stop you in rough water...lol...never fails...
they are trying to think of anything they can violate you for, what a drag
That was hard to watch, but good job keeping your cool under the circumstances. I’m betting it happens again before you get out of the Chesapeake Bay. I live here and they are all over Norfolk, Hampton and Baltimore.
Oh boy. Something to look forward to then...:(
